- Context of U.K. Riots:
- The U.K. experienced riots following a stabbing incident involving three young girls.
- Misinformation spread online falsely identified the attacker as an immigrant, fueling xenophobic violence.
-
Riots included racist attacks, arson, and looting, leading to numerous injuries and arrests.
-
Implications for Canada:
- Canada is experiencing rapid demographic changes similar to those in the U.K.
- There is rising hate and polarization, exacerbated by misinformation and far-right rhetoric.
-
Canada has welcomed millions of immigrants in recent decades, with a significant portion from non-European countries, contributing to racialized immigration statistics.
-
Challenges Faced by Canada:
- Increasing anti-immigrant sentiment and xenophobia, as reflected in polls and social attitudes.
- Political and social scapegoating of immigrants for broader issues like housing crises and economic challenges.
-
The role of far-right extremist groups in promoting division and hate.
-
Need for Action:
- Promotion of Integration:
- Implement programs to foster mutual respect and understanding among diverse communities.
- Accountability for Divisive Rhetoric:
- Hold leaders accountable for promoting fear and division.
- Countering Far-Right Extremism:
- Enhance law enforcement, community outreach, and education to prevent radicalization.
- Combating Misinformation:
- Improve public education and hold social media platforms accountable for spreading false information.
-
Implement Recommendations:
- Address the recommendations from the June 2022 report on ideologically motivated violent extremism.
-
Conclusion:
- The article serves as a warning to Canada, suggesting that addressing these issues proactively is crucial to prevent potential unrest similar to the U.K. riots.

I think it comes down to "you get what you vote for"
frozencupcaked@reddit
Nobody in Canada voted for mass immigration. Their politicians just did it without asking, to keep their investments high (housing and property)
11systems11@reddit
Politicians who are voted into office.
frozencupcaked@reddit
Every mainstream politician was in favor of it. And even if they weren’t, it would’ve been allowed anyway. Boomers need their house values high and their wages they pay to workers low
11systems11@reddit
Explain to me how undocumented immigrants with few skills are keeping housing prices high?
frozencupcaked@reddit
By living 10 to an apartment they can afford the inflated rent that a single or married Canadian couple can’t.
And in the case of rich Chinese immigration, literally buying up all of the houses as investments. Locals have been priced out of houses, jobs, healthcare, everything
11systems11@reddit
Fair enough. I'm definitely against the incessant flow of illegals pouring into our countries. In the US, they're being allowed in and told that they can vote.
Able_Software6066@reddit
The article makes all Canadians sound like gullible morons susceptible to xenophobic fear mongering. Even before the post-Covid immigration explosion, our housing prices and food costs were rediculous. Now the Trudeau government has brought in more immigrants per capita than any other country and anybody questioning it is immediately accused of racism. The first step in solving this issue needs to be bringing back immigration numbers to manageable levels not a bunch of feel good BS of blaming us for the problem.
Don't worry though, Canadian youth are too hopped up on anti-depressants to get angry enough to burn stuff down and those of us with jobs are too busy working. There'll be no UK style riots here.
Raddish3030@reddit
Lol projection is classic.
Eyes-9@reddit
Any country that has been swayed by oligarchic neoliberal obsessions with importing millions of foreigners to undercut native workers rights and maintain the pyramid scheme of endless population growth is vulnerable to UK-style riots.
Maybe if our governments actually enforced the law on everyone this wouldn't be such a problem. I don't recall the Turkish immigrant workers in Germany ever getting away with raping women in public.
OutsideFlat1579@reddit
The wealthy and corporations thank you for your obedience to their desire that you blame immigration instead of policies that have created these issues, housing becoming s crisis thanks to provincial legislation on property law that has favoured investors and landlords for decades.
Eyes-9@reddit
you mean policies which... allow millions of men to enter and reside in countries with drastically different views on how to treat women?
frozencupcaked@reddit
Seriously. In a professional environment these men who had been here for years refused to shake my hand because I’m a woman. After shaking my male coworkers hand. And they weren’t shy about it. And that’s a mild example of some of the problems women face from men like that
improbablydrunknlw@reddit
Alright, so, Canadian here.
First off the author of this article is a writer for Al Jazeera, who loves to Stoke the flames on the immigration issue.
Canada "may" be on the verge of chaos but it's not because immigrants, it's because immigration. Our population has grown by levels unseen around the world, but nothing was done to support the levels of people coming in. We did not prepare the infrastructure, we don't have enough doctors or hospitals, we don't have enough houses, we don't have nearly enough houses, and mass immigration has exasperated the issues.
We're angry because we're being told there's a work force shortage so we have to bring millions of people in, yet youth unemployment is (just about as high as it's ever been)[https://tradingeconomics.com/canada/youth-unemployment-rate], We're angry because housing has become so expensive (7 in 10 Canadians have given up on ever owning a home)[https://www.ipsos.com/en-ca/eight-in-ten-believe-owning-home-in-canada-now-only-for-the-rich#:~:text=Boomers%20(78%25).-,Among%20Canadians%20who%20do%20not%20own%20a%20home%2C%20over%20seven,affordability%20of%20the%20housing%20market.] And you can't even rent as the price is (skyrocketing)[https://rentals.ca/national-rent-report], and you basically have to live with someone to not be homeless, speaking of which (roughly three of every 200 resident)[https://www.ontarioaboriginalhousing.ca/news/ontarios-unofficial-estimate-of-homeless-population-is-234000-documents#:~:text=Ontario's%20'unofficial%20estimate'%20of%20homeless%20population%20is%20234%2C000%3A%20documents,-Published%20on%20August&text=The%20government%20of%20Ontario%20estimates,in%20a%20housing%20ministry%20document.] Are homeless, more people then California.
We're mad because everything has skyrocketed in cost but (real wage growth)[https://tradingeconomics.com/canada/wage-growth] isn't keeping up.
All these things are exasperated by mass immigration, but we're not mad at immigrants, we're mad because the government made this an issue by not doing enough for us and the new immigrants to be able to absorb the population growth and than called everyone racist if they pointed it out.
NotAMeatPopsicle@reddit
This. Totally everything this. A thousand times. I don’t have the article link on my phone, but I’m being told by friends still stuck in Canada that 50% of mortgages are expected to go belly up in the next 3-5 years.
Far_City9963@reddit
A lot of these points also ring true for the US as well.
Flux_State@reddit
Such as?
Far_City9963@reddit
I would say that it definitely depends on the state one lives in the US, but here are a few as stated in the post that are also issues in the US: high housing costs+ increase in homelessness, higher taxes that don't seem to actually help/do anything, and higher cost for basic necessities without a similar increase in wages.
PuzzleheadedStop9114@reddit
Yes a lot of us who are rational are upset over the government for all this, but there certainly is growing anger towards Indian immigrants here. Even those who were once rational are talking about it more and more. I hear it just about everyday in my blue collar job where I meet and talk with many people everyday. It's not as common in a place like Toronto and its suburbs of course. But cities of 500k and smaller its becoming common.
The housing problem began before this explosion in immigrants. In 2016 when I was looking for a condo/house in Hamilton ON, with my small mortgage approval of 160K, there were many Condos for 100 to 120K. Older houses for 120 to 160K. I could have moved to St Catherine's and found cheaper. I decided to wait a year to up my down payment. Well, houses I was looking at for 140K were up to 200. By 2019 they were up to 260 or even 300K with work done. These are old brick houses that are four blocks from a giant, polluting steel mill. Houses that were nicer, in the 220K area, were now 380K. Today, a house in the shadow of a steel mill is 450K.
And yes, now this explosion in immigration has sent this real estate problem into bat shit crazy country. Basement 1 bedroom apartments for 1500/month (the shittier ones). 5 out of 10 listings for apartments on Marketplace are actually shared accommodation for.... Indians ONLY, prefer girl, vegetarian. Seriously, look at slumlordcanada sub or subs like it. A basement with a hot plate and 6 mattresses on the floor, 600/month each. For fun (or misery) look at real estate/rentals just an hour south in Buffalo. Or even other places like Cincinnati. I just want to bring this up to our American friends, there is no longer low cost areas in Canada, outside of living in the middle of nowhere and commuting an hour to Windsor for your job. Even shitty boring towns/cities are nuts now. And I would take Buffalo over Hamilton any day. A friend of mine making 100K can only get a mortgage for 350K and there is nothing available for that. A new young family may have to rent for ever.
I've always been pro immigration. I've always enjoyed the new cultures in Canada and the experiences it gives in life. You can also bring in too many people from one country that are largely not compatible with Canada. I think if we see another million or more, the pitchforks with be shifting from the government to these immigrants even in the more left leaning of us.
Flux_State@reddit
What is it about Indians you consider incompatible with zcanada?
improbablydrunknlw@reddit
This is a great take/addition. Thank you for it because you're completely right.

Hipsthrough100@reddit
It’s not though. It’s basically characterizing all the white colonists as the only doctors, nurses, construction workers, school teachers and so on.
IMMIGRANTS DISPROPORTIONATELY MAKE UP CANADAS SKILLED WORK FORCE!
The capital class completely abused TFWs and exploited the system as well as the people coming in.
improbablydrunknlw@reddit
I said or implied not one word of that.
WARCRlMES@reddit
OutsideFlat1579@reddit
It’s not. It starts with a ludicrous claim that Canada is experiencing population growth “unseen in the world,” and if you believe that for even a second it’s time to learn about the rest of the world.
We are number 125 in population growth in the last year out of all countries in the world. That’s 124 countries with higher population growth.
For the love of our democracy, can my fellow Canadians stop being so eager to believe rightwing propaganda?
How could Canada POSSIBLY have the highest population growth ever seen in the world when developing nations have much higher birth rates and many have millions of refugees from conflicts in countries they border with? There are 9 million refugees in Egypt alone.
Just stop believing the bullshit. It is killing our democracy. There is no democracy if people are voting based on lies.
https://www.cia.gov/the-world-factbook/field/population-growth-rate/country-comparison/
improbablydrunknlw@reddit
Not population growth. Immigration growth, as in a country that has increased its immigration the most.
From the BBC
https://www.bbc.com/news/world-us-canada-65047436
OutsideFlat1579@reddit
I had to stop at your insane claim that we have experienced population growth “unseen around the world.” You need to stop imbibing propaganda.
We are ranked 125th in the world in population growth in the last year by the CIA World Factbook.
https://www.cia.gov/the-world-factbook/field/population-growth-rate/country-comparison/
When you make wild claims based on rightwing memes, it’s really easy for someone to take a minute to easily prove you are wrong.
It’s not just rightwing propaganda ruining our democracy, it’s people choosing to believe it.
I mean, are Canadians so insular that so many don’t realize how ludicrous it is to claim that we have have a higher growth rate than developing nations with high birth rates AND millions of migrants from regions of conflict that they border on?
The desire for so-called citizens of this country to perceive it in the worst possible way is nuts. Party over country? What is driving this madness?
We are in an extremely difficult era globally, and Canada is faring better than most peer countries overall, and there is no comparison to developing nations.
WARCRlMES@reddit
As a fellow Canadian this is spot on and should be forwarded to our local mps in mass. Beautifully written.
putcheeseonit@reddit
It will still be taken out on immigrants.
You can say the same about the UK but last I heard, there hasn't been any violence towards government officials.
4r4nd0mninj4@reddit
Every immigrant I work with who came here legally and fought tooth and nail through the old process is just as pissed at the government as everyone else. They just feel they can't speak out about it without affecting their PR process...
putcheeseonit@reddit
Oh I'm sure they are, I would be too.
improbablydrunknlw@reddit
I don't think so, as far as I'm aware the immigration in the UK has spread out to a bunch of towns call me including very small towns. In Canada for the most part all the immigrants are going to their own enclaves, that is starting to change now because there's just no more room. But for the most part unless you are in a big city or university Town you haven't really been affected by this in the same way the UK has.
kittykatmila@reddit
Another Canadian here. Nailed it!
eveebobevee@reddit
Lies. Canada's government is all rainbows and unicorns compared to the US which is why everyone moves to Canada when a Republican is elected.

Man, that reeks of... "We don't know or how those children were raped and stabbed, but I can guarantee you it's not the immigrants."
What a gas light.
themikep87@reddit
I'll also add, the role of far-left groups stoking the flames with disruptive protests.
There is a lot going on and most of the problems stems from mass unchecked immigration. Of course, the neglect of our government, corporate greed, and coruption at all levels is also driving an uprising (slowly but its building)
