Should I switch my cable from HDMI to Displayport?

Currently, 2k 144fps monitor, with 4070ti super. Should I buy a Displayport cable and swap out my current HDMI cable?
The-Master-Reaper@reddit
Hell yea and it’ll be a future investment anyway it’ll last you long and support better fps and resolution when you upgrade
Finetales@reddit
Some monitors like DisplayPort better. My main monitor gets 144hz with HDMI, 180hz with DP.
chibicascade2@reddit
HDMI allows you to use g sync and free synce, depending on your monitor. HDMI allows you to use adaptive sync. I think it's g sync > adaptive sync > free sync. G sync requires compatible monitor hardware. As far as I know at least.

I had to swap to a dp cable after my Alienware aw3225qf kept going to random black screens for a few seconds. 4k/240hz. Hasn't done it again since switching to a dp cable
PM-Your-Fuzzy-Socks@reddit
if you’re getting 144, there’s no need to swap
Megarboh@reddit (OP)
In what cases should one swap?
PM-Your-Fuzzy-Socks@reddit
when you’re not getting the setting for max hz, when things are showing up wrong, etc.
if things are working fine, there’s no need to swap

Well when ingame the screen is sometimes glitchy, where screen gets tearing(?) even though the framerate is well below 144 fps. The tearing(?) is not a cut-in-half, but a zig-zag pattern of game texture across screen for a split moment.
Killermothx@reddit
turn on g-sync/freesync. Do not turn on v-sync.
Your problem is that your monitor is refreshing before you have a new frame. It will force it without sync and you will see tearing
Megarboh@reddit (OP)
Switching to DP allows for g-sync, so that might’ve solved it!
Killermothx@reddit
did your monitor not come with DP? All the monitors I've bought have. Check the box if you missed one
SIDER250@reddit
Mine came with only HDMI. No DP.
Personal_Occasion618@reddit
Yeah, expected more from my 4k 144hz monitor but, it is what it is 🤷
Logical_Bit2694@reddit
I’m quite lucky that mine came with 2 dp cables
Megarboh@reddit (OP)
Not long enough for my setup
drake90001@reddit
Enable vsync
kwanye_west@reddit
that’s screen tearing and isn’t a cable issue. that’s because your monitor refreshes top down, hence the zig zagging. if your monitor has no free sync or g-sync, you’ll need to use v-sync. if your frame rate is high enough you might not even notice it with no screen syncing.
valorant for example i don’t even notice it because i’m constantly at 200+ fps.
PM-Your-Fuzzy-Socks@reddit
might want to look into monitor settings or game settings. it’s hard to say without a video or anything and even then, i’m not totally versed in those problems. i mean you can try a dp cable and maybe it’ll fix it but i personally have doubts. good luck though!

My monitor has HDMI 1.4 and DP 1.2. With HDMI I could only get 144 Hz, while with DP it would run at the full 165 Hz that the monitor supports
Generoh@reddit
Does hdmi even go to 144? Not trolling, I’m just a noob
ThatOnePerson@reddit
I'm running HDMI on 1440p@240hz no problem. It's mostly a bandwidth thing, and a "what does the monitor advertise it supports" thing.
2nd one is hit or miss depending on the monitor. Bandwidth is like
I've seen monitors that only support hdmi1.2 which isn't enough for 144hz. But I use HDMI 2.1 for 1440p@240hz 10-bit HDR cuz that requires 30 Gbit/s, so more than Displayport 1.4
There's Displayport 2.0 with 77 Gbit/s, but no monitor supports it. And Nvidia 4000 series don't support it.
WorldLove_Gaming@reddit
HDMI 2.1 can do 4K 144Hz
Illustrious-Party120@reddit
I did this and won't ever go back. 165hz 1440p with a 4070ti super
xstangx@reddit
Yup! DP has a lot more bandwidth, has better connectors, and is all around better. HDMI annoys me….
NoTLucasBR@reddit
I run HDMI from my GPU through HDMI to VGA adapter before going into my monitor, should I switch?
zeppzki@reddit
U mean hz?
Hrmerder@reddit
If I didn't use a 48" tv as a monitor, I would be able to do this..
dfm503@reddit
If you dip below 144 the Display port will help, and it has no downsides, so you may as well.
fuzzynyanko@reddit
Surprisingly, if your monitor supports FreeSync and you can't enable it, you should try it. Apparently Nvidia can't Freesync over HDMI
No-Actuator-6245@reddit
It depends on the monitor/TV. I have G-Sync enabled on my TV using HDMI and RTX 3080 but my 2 monitors don’t support it via HDMI
WiseMan_39@reddit
As far as my experience and previously lookimg into this, Nividia GPUs support Nividia G-Sync over both HDMI or DP, but only supports AMD Freesync and AdaptiveSync over Displayport.
With AMD GPUs they support displays with newer Gsync modules ,and any Freesync and Adaptive sync displays over both HDMI and Displayport.
My previous 1070 Ti worked fine with my freesync monitors that had displayport, but not my older one that only had HDMI. My current 6700xt and previous RX580 would do freesync over both hdmi and displayport. On all my freesync monitors, old and new.
No-Actuator-6245@reddit
With NVidia you need a gpu with HDMI 2.1 which is gpu’s from 3000 series. AMD allowed VRR via HDMI 2.0. It’s not really a Freesync vs G-Sync thing since NVidia made it possible to enable G-Sync over Freesync/VRR, this is what G-Sync Compatible monitors are just they have been certified by NVIDIA to work to a minimum standard but even non certified Freesync monitors will allow you to enable G-Sync but there is no guarantee it will work without issues.
Megarboh@reddit (OP)
It has “AdaptiveSync”
MFAD94@reddit
I find DisplayPort has a much sturdier connection, HDMI always feels loose
Intelligent-Day-6976@reddit
It it hdmi 2.0?
Liambp@reddit
I always use display port for PC gaming because historically it tends to be a generation ahead of HDMI plus it was more likely to support new features such as Gsync. However HDMI seems to have largely caught up with HDMI 2.1 so I wouldn't rush to change if HDMI is working for you.
Evening-Ad4274@reddit
For me some reason my hdmi only went up to 144 hz but my monitor was tested 165 hz and when I switched I was able to get the additional 15 hz
HeroKaetzchen@reddit
You mean 21 Hz or actually only 15 Hz?
Evening-Ad4274@reddit
🤣🤣 yea I was faded writing that ngl
ThatOnePerson@reddit
If you don't need any of the features of DisplayPort, no.
HDMI 2.1 actually has more bandwidth than DisplayPort 1.4 on your GPU. I use HDMI on my PC because DP1.4 doesn't have the bandwidth to handle 1440p240hz with HDR.
puneet724@reddit
Use hdmi ultra high speed certified 2.1 full bandwidth cables.. usually around INR 2000. Cheaper options are there but dont trust their bandwidth.

I don’t believe so, no lol
