Well done for considering the future and getting ready, if the sun kicks out a big CME it will be similar to nuke war. Getting ready for the panic of people just afterwards is excellent. Lots of sound advice on here.

I think you should start by doing realistic stuff instead
KeithJamesB@reddit
Why do you think there will be a nuclear war?
incruente@reddit
Not OP, but I cannot think of any practical weapon other than nukes that has been developed and not eventually used on scale in war. I see no particular reason to imagine nukes won't eventually be used on scale too.
PrisonerV@reddit
I can.
The after effects are very long reaching. Also, conventional bombs can do the job just as effectively without making the earth poisonous for hundreds of miles around the point of detonation.
The fear of retribution. It's actually a long-standing strategy - mutually assured destruction. You nuke us. We nuke you. Nobody wins. The Earth is dead and so are we. So don't use them.
Anyway, Putin talks about using them all the time but he's just talk. For one thing, look at the sad state of his military and realize the nukes the Soviets built haven't been maintained since the 1980s. A lot of them are going to have issues even launching, let alone detonating. Even the Chinese, they found somebody filled their nukes with water instead of fuel and pocketed the money. Oops.
There are a lot more things to worry about in this world.

This is a 60's era video on building a fallout shelter in your basement, with a lot of details you don't see in videos today. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_pWtPRHbHFM

Make sure you plan to have a chick your age to spend time with and rebuild society Adam and Eve style.

Only to end up with Jamie and Cersei and finally. . . Joffrey. đŹ

Read "Nuclear War Survival Skills" by Cresson Kearny. It's free online.
TheSensiblePrepper@reddit
Which you can download for free here.
And /u/Incruente we really need to stop doing this....

Bawhaha, I was like "I'm sure I've seen this exact same interaction before. But I thought it was just because Reddit feels like that sometimes. đ

This is why I tell people to search the Sub before posting. It just saves time for everyone.

My suggestion is to plan for more plausible scenarios. Live along a tectonic plate? Plan for a quake. Live in tornado alley? Plan for that. Flood zone? Winter blizzard? Tropical storm?
Take a stop the bleed course. It's more likely that you will run into an arterial bleed than a nuclear volley.
premar16@reddit
May i ask where you get most of your news and information? You can still prep for emergencies in an apartment. I would reach out to local construction people to see if they are willing to help teach you some things. WHy do you think there is going to be nuclear war?
AZ2986@reddit
You can plant roses outside of basement windows to add security and prevent break-ins. Anything to make it more difficult for someone outside to get in.
EUCRider845@reddit
Bottled water, glass bottles. Canned and dried food. duct tape to seal the doors. After two weeks you can venture out and get away from big cities. Backpacks, matches, and other bug-out stuff.

My childhood comic book hero was Kamandi, a survivalist & my interest peaked about the same age back in the early 80âs. I went hardcore by 19 yrs old & made a career out of it. Companies prep, governments prep. When itâs your J O B, youâre on top of the game. My only regret was not getting into the high speed side sooner. I remember getting a book from FEMA in 1989 on how to convert a basement into a nuclear fallout shelter. Training & skills gives you confidence, confidence allows you to problem solve on the move. Get into using Google earth, urban planner .kmlâs and CIP/COP. You donât have to have everything, just know where things are. Print out or back up your âplansâ.
boobookitty2@reddit
Can we get some details? Region and why you are concerned.
SunLillyFairy@reddit
Iâm inclined to ask if youâve discussed prepping with mom and if sheâs ok with basement renovations? And, are you sharing your concerns with her? If you own the flat you have more options than if itâs a rental.
There are a lot of things you can do to fortify a basement and make it into a decent shelter, from storms as well as nuclear. Also, basements maintain a more consistent temperature and can be a good place to have prepared if you lose power in a heat or freezing spell. So if youâre interesting in general prepping, itâs not a bad venture.
All that said, itâs best done in steps and with momâs permission. Besides fortification/protection from things like radiation, you need to think about things like air exchange, security, comfort/sleeping, food/water, food prep, heat/cooling, toileting and more.

Does it have one entrance and exit? If so, you might want to add a second one so that if it gets blocked, you still have a way out.
That's about all I can really suggest in terms of renovation, you'd need a proper expert to go over the space. Most preppers don't recommend basement as if the house comes down, you're stuck. The ideal bunker is one that doesn't have anything but dirt on top of it, so you'd want to use your basement as an access for the real bunker. In an apartment situation that obv won't be the case.
Other things I can suggest are:
Keep some torches down there, some books, board games and family activities, a few months worth of supplies of food can be pretty easy to store if they're MREs ect, you want a bathroom, ventilation and water obviously.
You'll want beds down there and it might not be such a bad idea to have a few bug out bags down there for if the basement becomes compromised and you need to flee.
If you have women in your family, I'd definitely recommend lots of sanitary items of different kinds so that they can be dignified and comfortable in a bad situation. Tampons, pads, period cups, period underwear ect. Try to have some of everything to make sure no-one is caught out.
Some hazmat suits and gas masks ect.
Home defense weapons too.
Water purification tablets, lifestraws and any medicine you can get your hands on!
Can you install a generator down there? Can you install a waste disposal unit down there, or a water tank fed from your apartment window somehow? Clean water would be a big deal if you could replenish it.
Any items you might be able to trade in a war: food, camping tents, medicine, tampons, baby formula, ect are all gonna go for a high price.

May we ask where you are located? Like which country, and are you in a major city, please don't provide specifics. That can help us gauge what you might need to prepare for in the unlikely event of nuclear exchange, if anything.
FWIW I do take your plight seriously, nukes are less likely than most disasters but also very serious if it were to happen.
There are bound to be ways to prepare. A general sense of how close you may end up being to ground zero will help us know what the most important items to put on the checklist will be.
Hopefully and in all likelihood this is all stuff we will never have to use, but that can be useful because it gives us some peace of mind. We're here to answer questions always.

Oh man I feel you. When I was a few years younger than you, I was worried about a WW3 scenario. I wanted my parents to build a bomb shelter, thank god they never did. Now, I ponder it a bit differently, I'm older and would have a hard time surviving and I'm not sure I'd want to. I'm also pretty sure I couldn't take the day off from work and what I do for a living means I would likely have time to call my family and say good bye before being turned into star dust.
Like other people suggest, prepare for survivable events. Pick up skills and acquire knowledge you can use in your life regardless of the situation. Find a job that improves your situational awareness, keeps you in good health both mentally and physically. Take this time to go and have fun but still take some time to learn new skills.

Nuclear War Survival Skills link.
There are many things you can do to prepare for a nuclear disaster. There isn't much you can to in the unlikely event the building collapses. Chances are that it won't.
What you want to do is cover the windows, both to keep people from looking in and to keep the glass from fracturing and getting blown into the basement. If you have no windows all the better.
Figure out a way to barricade the door.
The link I shared starts with instructions on making a fallout meter that's pretty accurate.
Most important is enough water to last your entire family for a week, drinking and washing hands.
You want to put 3-7 days worth of supplies down there along with food you don't have to cook. Think energy bars and drinks, nuts, tuna, crackers or whatever your family will eat.
Take food and water for your pets.
You'll want flashlights/candles in case the electricity goes out.
You need a first aid kit and remember to take any medications your family needs when you go down to shelter there.
Arrange a gravity fed sink that empties into a waste container. You'll need a way to deal with urine and fecal matter in a safe and sanitary way that doesn't stink the place up.
Read though the material I linked you to, research individual problems on line as you and watch YouTube videos with an eye to verifying the information you see.
It's gonna get old sitting on the floor so any furniture you can scrounge would be good.
logicking your way through this will be of invaluable benefit to you as a person. It will change the way you think about potential dangers and the world around.
Don't let people here discourage you or make you feel foolish for wanting to protect your family. Someone has to step up, right? Why not you?

I had a next essential crisis like this when I was your age young man. It was the peak of the Cold War, and there was some real threat back then.
I decided there was no way to really survive a thermal nuclear war, so I move within about 15 miles of a place that wouldâve been completely obliterated if and when it happened. That was over 40 years ago and I can tell you we are farther away from anything like that happening today than we were then.
If you want some advice from an old prepper, put your efforts into learning some useful skills not that renovating someone elseâs basement wouldnât be a good idea, but itâs not.
DLIVERATOR@reddit
Did you mean existential vs. "next essential"? Sorry, I studied existentialism in college so I immediately saw that.
Achnback@reddit
I appreciate your prepper sense, that said, you are far to young to be worried about an end of earth nuclear war. Same can be said at any age. If world powers decide to start popping nukes, don't worry about it, be right with Jesus and pass to the other side. More likely practical prepping: natural disasters, pandemics, power outages and civil unrest.
