Could the classic forum format be good enough? Forums allow for their creators to further customize the user experience and embody decentralization. A return of forum sites would be amazing for 2023.

same here. I’ve been using forums since 2004 and I don’t see myself leaving them anytime soon. I love the atmosphere and community feeling of them.

Yes!
That's what I wish for since the decline of forum communities many years ago. There are a few bigger forum communites I know of that still exist, for example boards.ie.. but in the end, most forums are topic or area specific. Back in the day, when a forum community got big enough, they covered basically every topic (even though they mostly started being dedicated to a specific one, eg. gaming or IT)
What would a modern forum software and community need?

No one wants a different app and account for every community they join. However, there are platforms which allow people to use one account to view content across many servers.

I don't think that this necessarily requires either of those things though.
You don't need an app if you have a good enough mobile experience on your website.
You don't need an account on that website so long as that website supports some kind of OAuth (log in with Google/Apple/GitHub/your own website/etc.).

I used to being to a couple of forums that had different topic options, similar to Reddit. In just needed the one login.

Forums are still common, I would say the best platform right now is Discourse.

I feel like this is useful information in trying times like these:

Maybe somebody make it its own thread here to show options for the reddit Diaspora.

I'm building a centralized forum site at FanClubs.org if you want to check it out. It does allows for customized experiences in member-run Fan Clubs.
Fan clubs have their own forum, events, blog, and image galleries if the Fan Club owners choose to add them.

sure, they already exist, probably as mentioned in the megathread, more people might make use of them
