What are some weird quirks about your handwriting?
Posted by picklesupreme@reddit | AskAnAmerican | View on Reddit | 132 comments
Probably not the case, but I wonder if there are any specific handwriting habits that are more common to one area than others.
Personally, I’ve noticed my “S”es and my “5”s often look too similar.
Also, whenever I write lowercase “f” I don’t write the cross all the way, if that makes sense, so it looks more like the uppercase “F”.
ChairmanLaParka@reddit
I have this habit, ever since I learned cursive in elementary/middle school, I never use a Q at the beginning of words. Always the cursive version, the number 2, but with the bottom line of the two drawn into a smoothly drawn, tiny cock and balls. It always makes me laugh, 30+ years later.
flootytootybri@reddit
My lowercase k and uppercase K look the same.
presidintfluffy@reddit
My T’s have a loop so there one single line. Some confused them with F’s some times.
seatownquilt-N-plant@reddit
I started crossing my letter Z in 9th grade to be like my German teacher. We didn't write a lot of numbers in class so her number writing didn't really influence me. German words have a lot of the letter Z in them.
Then in physics class my friend and I got different answers to the same problem. When comparing our work we could not tell if my numbers either 2s or 7s so on that day I started crossing my 7s.
I like putting a little serif on capitol Bs.
cheesymoonshadow@reddit
My quirk is actually that I cross my 7 but only sometimes. Other times, I do the version with 3 lines like:
LongHaulinTruckwit@reddit
I'm left handed, so I do things like cross my Ts and Js backwards. And my writing tends to slant because I try not to smear it with my palm.
RandomUnicorn929@reddit
I started curving the bottom of my lower case t’s when I was in high school because it got too confusing with the plus sign during physics.
lkvwfurry@reddit
I do a mix of cursive and printing sometimes in the same word. I cross t's and dot i's as i go rather than at the end of a word so a word like 'story' the o is off of the cross in the t UNLESS a word has punctuation like 'isn't' then for some reason I write the word then go back and dot the i, add the ' and then cross the t.
I just wrote nonsense for like 3 minutes to answer this post. :)
PatientFM@reddit
I use all print letters, but if I wrote the word story the s would be separate and the tory would all be connected because I don't pick up my pen if I don't have to. Write the vertical line in t then the cross connects to the upper left of the o, the upper right of the o to the left of the r, and so on.
I mimed writing out story with an imaginary pen to be able to describe this haha.
Rourensu@reddit
Same, but s wouldn’t be separate since I don’t have a reason to pick up my pen. It comes out looking like a lowercase 8.
Rourensu@reddit
Technically my handwriting is cursive because the letters largely connect, but I use regular print shapes and not the specific cursive ones.
The “t”s in my “th”s (or any “t” before a tall stroke) look like 8s that slipped on ice and are reaching up to grab something.
My lowercase “r”s, “n”s, and “m”s tend to run together, and at the extreme just become indistinct wavy lines like ~~.
cilexip@reddit
I dot my i’s with round circles instead of just making a small mark- I had a friend that used to say it was cute all the time
RemonterLeTemps@reddit
'Girl-writing' in the 1970s would generally entail using a heart instead of a circle to 'dot the i'. Also, a Paper Mate 'Flair' pen in pink or purple
w84primo@reddit
I do the same thing. My last name has an I in it and I used to just use a dot, but realized that it just looked weird up there on its own. My signature at least for my last name is almost a straight line with a loop in it. So the circle at least made it look more like an actual word written out.
Frankjc3rd@reddit
My handwriting was declared Chicken scratch in the fourth grade and really hasn't gotten any better over time.
For some reason I would get my cursive lowercase A's and o's mixed up, but not recently.
RemonterLeTemps@reddit
I've always written in a very tiny 'hand', ever since I learned cursive 60 years ago. Other quirks include forming many letters like printing, something I attribute both to having learned to write via the Zaner-Bloser Method, taught in most American public schools from about 1950-1978, and using 'block-printing' in my high school drafting classes (to label drawings).
My parents and paternal grandparents had distinctive handwriting also. My grandparents were born in 1886, and thus learned to form their letters in the 'Spencerian' style, a rather ornate 'hand' taught in American schools from the mid-19th century to about 1925, recognizable by its oval-shaped letters, and 'flourishes'. This highly popular Victorian script can still be seen in the classic Ford and Coca-Cola logos.
My parents learned to write via the much simpler Palmer Method, a type of writing you've probably seen if you have any family correspondence from the 1920s-1950s, esp. letters written by servicemen and women during WWII. It was not only easier to teach/learn than the Spencer Method, it was easier to read!
LineRex@reddit
My L's are super curly. I just thought it was fun to write them that way and unfortunately, it stuck. I recently started writing my F's and capital R's the same way. So my handwriting moves between super legible block writing that was drilled into me during drafting class, and these pretty flourished letters.
FastAndForgetful@reddit
I write in all caps but sometimes letters that should be capital letters are a little bigger. I cross my Zs and cross my Gs with a 7.
diabolicvirgo@reddit
a lot of the times i only cross the right half of my lowercase t's
Gswizzlee@reddit
I occasionally only do the left side.. maybe with both of us combined we can make a full t
diabolicvirgo@reddit
ayyyyyy
mortomr@reddit
My lower case “a” I do the hooky bit at the top
rocklare@reddit
I started writing in all caps in 8th grade. Then I stopped in my mid 20s because I realized how ridiculous it was.
TheFalconKid@reddit
I write the number four just like it is on a keyboard.
4
Gswizzlee@reddit
Me too!
Techaissance@reddit
Not that many people write in cursive in my generation anymore.
Gswizzlee@reddit
I love writing in cursive if I have to write something down fast. My school made me learn it- I’m a teenager
flingmetothemoon@reddit
My handwriting is very round - my u’s and v’s look the same so I add a little horizontal flag to the right end of the v. Also my g’s look like 8’s look like delta’s look like s’s
Gswizzlee@reddit
My handwriting is also very round I’ve noticed, people used to call it very cartoony
musical_dragon_cat@reddit
I write my 9s as an upside down 6 rather than the reverse P that's most common. I actually changed my handwriting several times throughout my school years so each letter and number can be distinguishable, and the 9s were one of those changes.
Gswizzlee@reddit
My 9s would start to look like gs I’m afraid
EdforceONE@reddit
My handwriting looks like my mom's. And she's passed. I'm 37 and it messes with me every time I see my handwriting
Gswizzlee@reddit
Mine looks more like my dad’s. My dad has surprisingly small handwriting. My moms a nurse so hers is illegible
Sabertooth767@reddit
My "e"s often a flick from the tail of the e to the top of the next letter.
I never put the dot above a "j".
I tend to write letters on a flat plane, i.e. a "g" and an "a" (for example) are level.
Gswizzlee@reddit
I also never dot the j! Idk why
Visible-Shop-1061@reddit
Apparently I write all the letters from the bottom up or in other weird orders of strokes. If people watch me write they are like what the f are you doing.
I honestly don't really remember learned to write. I just knew what the letters looked like and it seemed pretty easy to recreate.
gliscornumber1@reddit
I cannot write a capital k
Longjumping_Bar_7457@reddit
Not sure if it’s weird but I tilt my capital t’s, and when I write the letter a I leave a gap and the can sometimes look like c’s. Also I write my four’s like this 4
SuperSpeshBaby@reddit
Mine is a weird blend of cursive and printing. I actually do a lot of writing by hand at work, and it has to be fast, so my script is whatever is most efficient for me. For example, if the previous letter ends close to the baseline and the next letter is "s", then I'll write the "s" in cursive, but if the previous letter ends near the top them the "s" will be in printing. I don't think about it, it just happens automatically. As a result, it's really hard for anyone else to read. Everything is written clearly, but it's tough for people to parse random changes between scripts.
mollyologist@reddit
I make my S'es from the bottom up.
huitztlam@reddit
My E's are written as ε and my Zs, 0s, and 7s have a line through them
HotButteredPoptart@reddit
It's very small, very pointy, with exaggerated capital letters. It's really hard to read. I wish I could change it.
Stay_Beautiful_@reddit
I "cross" my Ts with a squiggle rather than a straight line
pirawalla22@reddit
It's illegible to everyone but me. Does that count as a quirk?
sanka@reddit
I used to work for a guy doing forensic engineering stuff. His handwriting was fully unreadable unless you had been reading it for years.
He said he did it so thst his handwritten notes put into evidence could not be misinterpreted. Basically only interpreted by himself when asked about them in a deposition.
MetzgerBoys@reddit
Are you a doctor?
CynicalBonhomie@reddit
Sometimes I can't even read several items on my own grocery lists.
UnfairHoneydew6690@reddit
I’ve been told many times I should have been a doctor because no one can read my handwriting
theSPYDERDUDE@reddit
My dad still tells me this
mrmojorisin2794@reddit
Mine isn't even legible to me lol
Cacophonous_Silence@reddit
Ayyy just made the same comment
My fellow toddler suffering from parkinsons!
Cacophonous_Silence@reddit
Mine is sometimes illegible even to myself
I describe it as "like a toddler with parkinsons"
Budget-Attorney@reddit
When I was in school my teachers would call me up to read what I wrote on my tests. Otherwise they couldn’t grade it
It was always a fun game they would play, where they would determine what they thought it looked like and then I would tell them what it actually said
cilexip@reddit
I wanna see!! I’ve never not been able to read someone’s handwriting
pirawalla22@reddit
You might be able to read it with some effort. A lot of people look at a page full of my writing and laugh out loud.
Shadow_of_wwar@reddit
I can make mine legible if i write very carefully, but i have to write really slow to do that, i never took notes in school cause i either wrote too slow to keep up, or kept up and wrote so poorly it was illegible even to me.
pirawalla22@reddit
I took copious and detailed notes in school and as a result my handwriting just got looser and looser.... now my job involves a lot of note taking during meetings and it's just a scrawl. But I can still read it.
When I slow down, my handwriting is easily legible but it's still very sloppy. I basically write in a combination of cursive, print, and block letters, often in a kind of shorthand.
Legitimate-Factor-53@reddit
I write in cursive and a lot of my capital letters are separate from the rest of the word. Besides my cursive is very good and many people say it’s the most legible they’ve ever seen.
geri73@reddit
I frequently cursive write, print, uppercase, and lower case all together in my handwriting. I also use @ and &. When I write out a date format, it's 9.6.24. I spell cancel cancelled and some other weird long-winded stuff.
Feature_Agitated@reddit
My C’s have hooks on them because when I write them I go down and then trace back up to complete the C
crown-jewel@reddit
I don’t think I have any quirks but a fun fact is it looks identical to a former coworkers, to the point he thought he accidentally signed his own birthday card until he saw my name (our birthdays are a couple days apart so cards were circulating at the same time).
MetzgerBoys@reddit
I always write capital “i” with the top and bottom lines to distinguish it from a lowercase L. My 1s look like lowercase Ls except if I’m writing something like a serial number that contains letters and numbers then I’ll add a little flag thing to the 1 as seen in the font on here
Another number related thing I do is how I write 9. I don’t write it like the font here shows it (I don’t know of anyone who does tbh lol) it’s just a straight line with a circle on the top left which isn’t the weird part. Everyone else starts with the circle and ends with the stem. I start at the top of the stem, go straight down, straight back up the like I just drew, then do the circle counterclockwise
DOMSdeluise@reddit
my lower case g is identical to my s except it's lower down
CupBeEmpty@reddit
Now that is one I haven’t seen despite spending a decade reviewing handwritten documents.
AGirlNamedRoni@reddit
Weirdo #2 checking in. I do the same.
CupBeEmpty@reddit
Well dangit, now I’ll have to keep an eye out for it on written stuff. Thankfully 90% of our documents are digital type these days.
I still run across written stuff and boy howdy have I gotten good with cursive.
One_Bicycle_1776@reddit
My g, s, and 5s all look the same
AGirlNamedRoni@reddit
Me too!
Courwes@reddit
I write a combination of script and cursive but my cursive is not traditional cursive.
revengeappendage@reddit
I always print, and I use exclusively capital R. Like, it is smaller sized, but never a lower case r.
KaBar42@reddit
My uppercase and lowercase J are identical, I don't use the "j" lowercase.
Snotmyrealname@reddit
I have comically tiny handwriting.
SnapClapplePop@reddit
I connect the bottom of my T to the left end of the cross. I also loop back up from the bottom to the top when writing letters like D, P, R, and B.
_pamelab@reddit
I can write in about 6 different "fonts" if I try (including my father's left-handed handwriting, I'm a righty), but my everyday handwriting is chicken scratch.
UniqueEnigma121@reddit
It’s shit. Which is a bit embarrassing, as a literature graduate🙄
Awdayshus@reddit
My exclamation points are a triangle with a circle underneath, rather than a line with a dot.
poohfan@reddit
Mine is a mix of cursive & print, which always drove my mother crazy. She always had such beautiful penmanship, and got all over us for not writing neater.
CynicalBonhomie@reddit
Just this past week, my students called me out for using tiny capital R in the middle of words instead of r, which I had never noticed. I also invented my own letter for words ending in -ing that looks like some sort of Arabic lettet.
CODENAMEDERPY@reddit
I can’t write cursive but my e’s are all cursive.
mag_safe@reddit
I don’t have cute bubbly girl handwriting.
I sometimes write in all caps to make my handwriting legible to others. If I’m writing a grocery list for me, it’s just how it’s matured over time.
My signature is my first initial and some illegible squiggles.
VampireGremlin@reddit
When I write in cursive my K's look like they have butterfly wings.
purplepeopleeater333@reddit
I switch between a cursive lower case and a typewriter type a - even in the same word. Somehow my brain has certain letters that precede a cursive an and other letters that precede a typewriter kind of a.
I don’t know if typewriter a is the correct way to describe it. It’s an a like you see in your iPhone keyboard.
tlonreddit@reddit
I will often, out of habit, turn writing an N into an M, requiring me to erase something. I never write with a pen unless I need to.
_S1syphus@reddit
Probably due to my deficient education I've rounded out all my letters for convenience. Capital "N"s are just larger lower case "n"s. Same with my "m"s. My capital "A"s have rounded tops, my "k"s are just lowercase "h"s with a line coming out of the hump, my "w"s are rounded like my "m"s.
The only exceptions are my "z"s, "F"s, and "E"s. And of course, all my letters are sans-serif
IrianJaya@reddit
I love making cursive capital L's, G's, D', Q's, and Z's, so if you glance at my writing, you may notice I've gone out of my way to include an unusual number of those like I'm practicing calligraphy or something. But then compare them with my cursive capital F's, T's, and V's, which are usually just printed because I don't enjoy writing those.
Fireberg@reddit
This is all for normal non-cursive printing.
I cross the 7 to not confuse it with a 1. I cross both cases of Z to not confuse with 2. My lower case t has a tail to not confuse with +. When writing x as a variable, I give one line a little flourish to keep it separate from any other character that may look similar. My lower case f has a flourish with a tail going under the line because it looks cool. A double tt in a word will have a single line crossing both t's. My 4's are close not open. The top of my 8's are open.
happyburger25@reddit
Every time I write a word like the, we, she, he, be, etc., I always loop into an E
DankePrime@reddit
One big thing is I write q, p, d, h, j, and b cursive, with the rest of the letters not cursive.
I also write these weird:
g = weird 8
y = ɣ
ng = ŋ (cursive (downstroke loops))
The = a single line
w84primo@reddit
My uppercase letters are just gigantic. Think John Hancock.. If I want to be able to actually read my own handwriting I have to hold the pencil or pen differently. I have to hold it been my middle and index fingers and somehow it’s magically better.
machagogo@reddit
Generally speaking my handwriting can be described as a weird quirk. Or that of a serial killler. One or the other.
xiaomayzeee@reddit
My lowercase “Rs” and “Vs” look almost identical. And depending on how bad my writing is that day, my 4s and 6s sometimes look similar.
renS0115@reddit
I use a weird combination of upper and lower case. H, R, N, A are always capitalized e, i, b, g, l are always lower case And everything else i letter case to my hearts creative content
Atlas7993@reddit
My lower case n's and r's are indistinguishable, same with my lower case g's and y's; my lower case h's look like capital L's with a hump.
Atlas7993@reddit
My Mom calls it chicken scratch. I've tried very hard to make it look nice, but someone always has something to say about it. Should've been a doctor.
AGirlNamedRoni@reddit
As I’m reading through these, mine is a combo of all of them. AND I have tremors, so that makes it even more fun!
thecampcook@reddit
I've been told I hold my pencil wrong. My husband claims that I hold a pencil as if I were left-handed, even though I am right-handed. I looked it up, and my type of pencil grip is called "dynamic quadrupod."
stirwhip@reddit
My z looked too like a 2, so I started doing a cursive z, and now it looks like a 3.
AGirlNamedRoni@reddit
I do the line through the Z.
psychocentric@reddit
I grew up in many different communities, with different styles of writing. I was taught regular print, d'nealian, and cursive. To make matters worse, I also learned the different ways to write numbers (like 2 with a loop, or 2 without). I mix them up all the time. My handwriting is a mess because of it.
zeroentanglements@reddit
Habit from high school and majoring in engineering: I put dashes through my Zs so they are distinguished from the number 2
Jakebob70@reddit
Z's and 7's for me. (Found out the IRS doesn't like 7's with the line through them)
lannistersstark@reddit
I make elephants by accident :P
balthazar_blue@reddit
For some reason, I can write more neatly with a pencil than with a pen.
Does that count?
Doppelfrio@reddit
I don’t close off the backs of my a’s and g’s, making them occasionally look like c’s and s’s
junkmindd@reddit
i always write in capitals letters and my R and P are writen the same
qu33nof5pad35@reddit
I write in caps
dwhite21787@reddit
When I write quickly it looks like my dads handwriting
xmetalheadx666x@reddit
I've started putting a slash through my zeros because otherwise you can't tell the difference between that and an "O"
spaghettinoodle15@reddit
I used to hate it when ppl put a line through the 7 but I can’t do a 7 without it now. 😭 Also I can’t stop using a “y” as the word “and” it just takes up less space and looks cool.
seattlemh@reddit
It's inconsistent.
cagestage@reddit
I once read or had someone tell me that, according to handwriting analysis, people who cross their t's too low are motivated. And that might be the truest thing ever said about me.
CJK5Hookers@reddit
My middle school couldn’t make up their minds and kept flipping between us writing in cursive and not and now my handwriting is this horrible Frankenstein’s monster of the two
tychobrahesmoose@reddit
My signature looks like illegible scribbles, but part of it is a weird pseudo-smiley face I used to draw back in middle school - doesn't stand out until you know to look for it.
DerpyPotatos@reddit
My lowercase "t" looks like a reversed number 4.
WarrenMulaney@reddit
All caps, block printing. Capital letters are just bigger than other letters.
SteampunkRobin@reddit
I use a weird combination of cursive and print letters, even in individual words.
SixxFour@reddit
I always make capital R's in my handwriting, even in all lowercase words. My 5's and S's also look very similar, and I always put a line through my 0's.
xxxjessicann00xxx@reddit
I never dot my lowercase I
When I write a lowercase L and E together, it looks like a 6
I write in some weird cursive/print hybrid most of the time
booktrovert@reddit
Sometimes my t has a tail on the bottom (like the t's in this answer), and sometimes it's just a cross. Often in the same word. I always write lowercase L's in cursive when I print. Conversely, I never write N's, M's, or Z's in cursive, lower or uppercase. I will stop the cursive to write those letters in print. My 5's also look like S.
Dr_Watson349@reddit
If I am writing something by hand, something very bad has happened to the planet.
Crayshack@reddit
My "t" and my "9" sometimes look the same. My "D" is closer to being a "Δ" than anything else. In general, my letters tend to be a lot more angular than they are supposed to be.
namhee69@reddit
Weird quirks about my handwriting?
The fact that no one can read mine is notable.
5432198@reddit
Completely unnotable if you're a doctor.
namhee69@reddit
Which I am not one…. My doc has decent handwriting at least.
5432198@reddit
My capital E's are just backwards J's with an = sign on the right side of the top part.
RaptorRex787@reddit
I always add a loop onto lowercase g's, just and y's and on uppercase J's, I also add a line in the middle of z's kinda like the line in a 7
RDCAIA@reddit
My I, l and 1 look eerily similar.
FaberGrad@reddit
My upper case Z is always printed because I used it so rarely in cursive I never remembered how to write it.
huhwhat90@reddit
The shoulder of my lower case r curves upward instead of downward. My upper case R looks like a kindergartner wrote it.
Swimming-Book-1296@reddit
NOT TODAY FBI!
CupBeEmpty@reddit
The cursive J in my signature looks like an F.
My print u looks like an n.
My a in print looks more like a cursive a.
I also just randomly scrawl through cursive and print when I’m writing a lot of text.
Background-Passion50@reddit
My handwriting is awful. I was born dyslexic. When I was a toddler my grandmother took it upon herself to teach me how to read and write. Thanks to her efforts I was able to read and write at a far higher level than my classmates when I did finally start going to school. But, my handwriting hasn’t improved past a 3rd grade level so I write everything in thick, bold, upper case, block letters.
