It's so weird to remember that *everywhere* had ashtrays. McDonalds, Arby's, airplanes. And every clay crafting class I took as a kid had us make an ashtray for our parents.
The smoking section of planes and buses was the last few rows with no kind of partition. Same general concept in the non-smoking section for restaurants. It was more of a separation as an idea rather than an actual barrier of any kind. Also, I remember making my share of ashtrays for sure
I remember being like 12 or 13 and being at Target with my friend who was a few years older and she was smoking. There were butts on the floor. Ashes on the shelves. I thought she was so gross for that and then she convinced me to try them. Between her and my first “love” I became a smoker at 15. Worst mistake I ever made. And I have done some stupid shit.
It was a very different world back then. In junior high one of my teachers would give me money and I would go to the nearby grocery store and buy a pack of Old Gold cigarettes for him. Something like that would be unthinkable now.
I quit smoking over ten years ago but still ask for the smoking section when I go out to eat just to see the host’s/hostess’s reaction. My wife rolls her eyes. I think it’s funny.
My father's office was directly across the street from their Syracuse building. As a kid I always wondered how anyone could work in such a desolate looking building that had no windows.
I've told people that hospitals once had smoking areas. I remember smoking down there and seeing people with the IV bag on the stand. Usually they do not believe me
My dad was in a bowling league and regularly sent me, at age 9, to the cigarette machine to get him another pack. 😂
Personally, I love the looks on people's faces when I tell them my mother used to send me to get beer and cigarettes with nothing but a note and some cash. 🤦😂😂
the doctors who got to prescribe smoking would later get paid to help ‘fix’ what people damaged/destroyed with said prescribed smoking, doomed from the start!

And don't forget your neighborhood department store fitting rooms...the smokeless kind, with the trap door you'd push down to tap your ashes in

I told someone that my doctor used to smoke in the exam room while talking to my mother and I thought their head would explode. 😂
I wonder if I can find a picture of the ashtrays at the ends of supermarket aisles. 🤔

this is like the dentist on my street growing up who would include his business card with Halloween candy
DoodleyDooderson@reddit
That’s funny. I would have had a chuckle if my kids had got something like that.
BigConstruction4247@reddit
At least he gave out candy and not toothbrushes.
Cowboywizzard@reddit
I mean, even dentists eat candy once in a while.

Sounds like he knew what he was doing! Good way to drum up business!

I never thought I’d live to see the day when insurance companies placed profits over people. Argh…rant over. Now I need a cigarette :)

I remember our pediatrician smoking while in the exam room.

I don't remember that but I remember the teacher's side in 3rd grade smoking at her desk. I hated going to her for help.

Wow..

The first hospital my mom worked in had ashtrays built into the hallway walls. I think we all stank back in the day.

Ah, Binghamton. What a smoky place it was in the 80s and 90s. I remember the stale scent well,
