So you're working from home. There's a hardware-related thing that becomes very urgent so you have to rush into the office. You're in the parking lot and realize what you're wearing but have to go in anyway.
Welcome to my Friday lol. I assume this has happened to everyone else at some point.
Wasteland_Mystic@reddit
I own 10 button up black shirts, 10 black t-shirts, 5 pairs of black jeans, two pairs of black shoes. I basically dress like an NPC every day.

Men’s think it’s okay to live like this

Almost the same, except I have the same golf polo in every color they come in, blue jeans, and a grey shirt. Although, I do keep a change of clothes in my office, just in case.
morganbo85@reddit
Basically the same here, 7 black t-shirts, 7 decent blue jeans, and two pairs of plain but clean tennis shoes

Maybe this goes against the spirit of a wedding ring, but my wife and I wear silicone ones.
At least once we have chosen new ones and ordered replacements out of boredom. They were pretty inexpensive.
I also don’t have to worry about catching it in something and being degloved.
Sigseg-v@reddit
The ring in the picture is not a wedding ring… except you want to propose to the dark lord of Mordor.
doubled112@reddit
This is what happens when I reddit with no glasses after beers.
RequirementBusiness8@reddit
So you’re not ruling out proposing to the dark lord himself. Smart man, keep your options open.

Meh fuck popular/common practices...do you bro lol. Been with my old lady 17+ years and we ain't married, works better in our favor not being married. Not the same for all tho haha. Don't like stigma when peeps do something out of the norm, like gtfo yo 🤣
doubled112@reddit
Hell yeah.
We were together a long long time before getting married (together since 15, 30s now) and the photos of the kids in the wedding are some of my favourites.
Clearly it’s working for us.
Also, these squishy little rings are so comfy.
BakedAllDay8o8@reddit
Hell yah good shit bro! In our culture we may do tribal tata wrapped around our ring finger instead of the usual stuff. Glad it's working and many more to go!

Life would pretty boring crap if we were all the same, eh?

This reminds me of my father in law. He had to run to the store for a last minute emergency. When he got to the counter, he went to get his wallet, and realized he was only wearing boxers. Luckily, it was a local store and they knew him, so they gave him what he needed and he went back the next day, with pants, and paid.
BananaSacks@reddit
Man, I thought that this and stories alike were the exception. Then, I moved to the literal BFE of BFEs. Middle of nowhere ireland. You can fill up your petrol tank, grab a case of cans, and a snack - all on "see you tomorrow."
Then again, If you fart in public, your whole office knows about it before you show up to work ...

A few years ago, I screwed up my morning routing. Long story short, the "pants" step came into play.
In my defense, I wasn't sleeping a whole lot at the time.
surloc_dalnor@reddit
It could be worse. A coworker and I were drinking at a bar. A customer of ours shows up and insists on dragging him to a nearby data center and putting him in front of a root prompt. Of course he is rather drunk so I get dragged along. I'm only mildly drunk. We both take a red bull as we leave. I end up fixing an issue being coached by a really drunk hyper.
TheFluffyDovah@reddit
At what point are you allowed to be off? Unless I agreed to do something outside of my working hours or I am being paid for working overtime, then I am not working, consider me being on a remote island with no access to Internet. I think in our profession we allow employers too much to abuse the definition of out working hours. I've heard of people cancelling plans with loved ones or working on stuff at ridiculous early or late hours simply because someone called them and said "Sorry for calling you directly, I know it's late/early, but can you help me with..." and that's not enough. I can't think of many jobs that have the same issue with being called into work at random times of the day, I think even doctors only do it if they are on call
surloc_dalnor@reddit
We were young and stupid back then. Today I'm on call every 5th week and a lot of rotations I'm not paged outside of work. If you get paged two nights or two weekend days in a row management it's big deal as a 3rd page in row escalates the overall issue to the CTO level. Our CTO considers off hours work a sign of poor written code and poorly designed systems.
TheFluffyDovah@reddit
Sounds like a great CTO

Got called in for a client emergency while at the gym. It was my day off so I didn't have a change of clothes in my gym bag but the client wanted me for this specifically. Told my boss, he explained to the client that I was coming from the gym and wouldn't be in business dress, they said it was fine. I showed up, started working on their stuff and for some reason, almost every person in their office had to come see what I was doing.
I never go without a change of clothes now, even on an off day when I'm sure I'll be going straight back home for a shower afterward.
CeC-P@reddit (OP)
At least you weren't wearing this
LANShark_@reddit
Not even in the US Air Force was this a problem. Or in the 25 years of regular IT work. It’s batshit.
TheLightingGuy@reddit
Yeah I justnever cared. Granted my old job was a very laid back office anyways where shorts and t-shirts, such as my one from a bar that said "I'd tap that" with a silkscreen of a keg would fly, no questions asked.
dat510geek@reddit
A full on DR restore from backups amd rebuild via 3.5 inch fdd in a store from in my pyjama's first year of marriage on Christmas eve before trade. Os2 based system in 2005. Got a bottle on Don perione from the ceo when he got back.
pucspifo@reddit
My wardrobe consists entirely of punk band t-shirts and cargo shorts. I deign to wear socks and closed toe shoes from October to April, otherwise it's flip flops. I go into the office in these clothes, and if anyone gets upset about it, I ignore them, and point to my work, not my clothes.
I stopped worrying about dress codes unless I'm meeting with people outside the company. Talks with the CEO? Dead Kennedys t-shirt and cargo shorts. Even meetings outside the company are likely to be t-shirts and shorts, but sometimes, I'll put on big boy clothes and act like a professional.
mercurygreen@reddit
You mean my day off when I got a call on my way to the Renn Faire...?

Anybody still gives a fuck about what IT people wear?
hurkwurk@reddit
i work in mid tier government, and am back end IT at an office that doesnt serve the public at all, and I still get dirty looks when i come in wearing a henley instead of a collared shirt. the dress code just barely misses henleys because they ban t-shirts, but allow shirts with buttons, and since women's blouses dont have collars, men's cant be required to any longer.
pants are required, no jeans allowed.
BananaSacks@reddit
I did find living in one of the states that was as close to hell as possible, slacks, at least in some circumstances/places, can be a whole lot more comfortable & cool (temperature).
FarJeweler9798@reddit
Gladly not, but that kinda goes to all not just IT. Sure where safety is concerned you will need to use correct clothing but at the office you want to use t-shirt and shorts and sandals go ahead
woodsy900@reddit
Yeah they do... And the IT department usually adheres to the dress codes better than those who set them because you know when we are told something that's the rules we follow
brispower@reddit
you'd be surprised, my current job has a shitty button down shirt, dress pants dress code. if only that was the worst part of working here...
matt95110@reddit
Funny you mention that. About 10 years ago I was off on a Friday and I was going to head over to a friends place for a BBQ. I was planning to go early to help setup and I was going to stay the night.
I had just left home and I got a call from the helpdesk that the print server and card system for the copiers had stopped working and no one could scan anything. So instead of trying to walk them through it I said I would drop by since it would be a 10 minute detour and it would only take a few minutes to fix.
I was wearing flip flops, shorts and a t shirt.
Anyways, I walk into the office and go straight to the helpdesk and get them to login. Right as this is happening, a manger (not my manager) walked by and asked WTF, I wasn’t dressed appropriately and I had to leave. I said I was here to fix an issue and I would go right after. So a bit of a back and forth happened where we both got increasingly pissed off and eventually I said, “fuck it, I’m leaving” and I left without fixing the issue.
About an hour later when I had gotten to my friends house my boss called and told me I could come back to fix the issue and I said I was drunk and couldn’t drive and it could wait until Monday.
-sharkbot-@reddit
Come in on a day off and get reprimanded about dress code? Bitch I’m doing you a favor, I’m not even on the clock. Glad the scans had to wait for Monday.

-uberchemist-@reddit
Yeah we always had a business casual dress code for the longest time and on Fridays they would let you wear T-shirt, shorts, etc. After COVID and virtually everyone working from home, it's Friday every day now.
StiH@reddit
Fuck the dress code. That's what I normally wear to my sysadmin job at an international bank.
yungyaml@reddit
I was a network admin at a bank, and they made us follow the same dress code as the customer-facing employees. I was running cables under raised flooring in a blazer, blouse, trousers, and panty hose, or struggling to make cables because women had to have manicured nails. "Business professional" doesn't look so professional when the employees' clothes are wrinkled and covered in dust. I didn't stick it out for very long there.
Valheru78@reddit
Reminds me of my old 'school' in the 90's, this was a one year education as sysadmin for Windows NT and Novell, first day we were told that we had one will to buy three piece suits because starting the second week we were expected to come in wearing them...
And there I thought I was there to learn how to manage networks and computers, surprisingly most people were gone before the second week started.
william_tate@reddit
Fuck that, if they want me to crawl around and get my tailored suit dirty they can pay the dry cleaning bill too
ie-sudoroot@reddit
They do... that’s never a problem.
caffeine-junkie@reddit
Dry cleaning only gets the dirt out. There is still the extra wear, especially on the knees, and rips/tears. They should be paying for new outfits every few months. Either that or accept business casual and let the person wear khakis/dresses/whatever.
Source: ruined an Armani suit from crawling under desks/working in the DC.
ie-sudoroot@reddit
Worked in a solicitors office for a short period… same shit and most up their own arses. Everyone afraid to fart the wrong way but as soon as I handed in my notice I was like fk yeah… chill the fkn beans. Until you can print I am the most important person here!
Some took it well others saw how institutionalised they had become and the narcissists claimed the boost of moral around the office on them.
ie-sudoroot@reddit
I dressed like this all the time until I got remote working…
CeC-P@reddit (OP)
They got what they deserved. One of the HCL assholes I used to work for came in wearing $400+ shoes and complained about our shoes. We were understaffed by 8 people at the moment and the meeting was about our team not having enough people. We all found the listings. $18/hr to work IT at a hospital during COVID with on-call 24/7. AND OUR SHOES WERE CLEARLY THE PROBLEM.
I got the cheapest deer stag (fake vegan garbage leather) black dress shoes, they fell apart in 3 weeks because we walked 8 miles a day and dragged around carts and held doors open with our feet, and I switched back to normal people shoes.

I do the same. When I log off from work I immediately change clothes. Helps the kids also know when I am working and not.

When the CrowdStrike issue came up, I was working from home. I grabbed my two usb boot, Bart Windows 10 They got me with my Red Elephant with stars, with arrows. jcas01@reddit

Wolfram_And_Hart@reddit

ConfectionCommon3518@reddit
Always remember in the 90s we had a 90 page per min IBM printer attached to the mainframe and it was Sunday afternoon and it had a problem so call logged and about an hour later the engineer appeared on his big bike as literally he had just left a big biker event here on the UK so just turned up as is but me being a metalhead didn't care .
Turning up in a leather jacket with a slayer t-shirt quite often makes a lot of people rethink their complaint.
Sigseg-v@reddit
I was once watching a soccer game in the stadium. Shortly after the game was over I got a call that someone shoplifted from our flagship store in the city centre. The police was already there but they had trouble to get the security camera footage exported. I rushed with the Metro directly from the stadium to the shop. So there I was, standing in a soccer-fan-tricot and a leather jacket, in a luxury store on one of the most expensive shopping streets in Europe, 3 beers into the afternoon, in front of 2 police officers, exporting an AVI file to an USB stick.
werewolf_nr@reddit
Once I got called in for a relatively minor issue on a day off. I told them I was still in armor from doing a medieval combat event. I collected a lot of weird looks. It was the last time I got dragged in for a minor problem on a day off.

My dress code choices are the reason why Miami vice Friday's were canceled. We would wear Hawaiian shirts on Friday in the I.T. department with our dress pants to look like Miami vice and our boss didn't care he thought it was funny. Plus they were technically button down shirts because we tucked them in so it was business casual. Even the I.T. director laughed at it and did it occasionally with us... Unfortunately there was a VP of some department that didn't appreciate how "loud" and ""colorful"" this shirt was and Miami Vice Friday's came to an end

Luckily I work for a company that’s pretty laid back in their “required attire” plus I work from home unless I’m going to a clients office for something (usually replacing equipment, moving something they can’t move). So I work typically in cargo shorts and T-shirt. If I have to go onsite it all depends on the client whether I change clothes or not. Lawyers office? Yea I’ll put on a good dark pair of jeans and polo shirt, but if it’s a wharehouse where it’s dirty? I will just make sure I’m not wearing a shirt that could be deemed offensive by the wrong person.
Last place I worked required dress pants and one of the company polo shirts they gave us or a button down shirt that looked professional. I came in one day when I was off, just to pickup a fortimail appliance I had to install the following day, I was near the office and didn’t want to drive 30 minutes out of my way the following morning… The new manager of my group had only been there for maybe a few weeks at the point so I made it a point to say hello and meet him in person…. I was wearing new jeans and a plain polo shirt (normal attire for me), and after I left I got a call from a co-worker about 20 minutes later telling me that he went off about how “unprofessional” I was coming into the office in plain clothes like that….. even tho wasn’t even working that day. I never got along with that asshat, and gladly left when I was able to find a better fit with the company I work for now.
dollhousemassacre@reddit
I've never been able to relate to the whole "spend the day in your PJs mentality". Even if I have no plans to leave the house, I still get dressed.
CeC-P@reddit (OP)
It's more geeky T-shirts and stuff that I always end up with. Not offensive, just not work attire. And my only thoughts are "so if I reboot this first and then that causes it stop alerting, do I have to reboot the other system too?" not "Did I shave?" and "Am I in the right pants and shirt?"
bk2947@reddit
Same. My work outfit is a company logo fleece for video calls.
metalwolf112002@reddit
All the cameras in my home office are covered with tape. Saved me once when I accidentally clicked "answer with video" after I had just gotten out of the shower. All coworkers seen was a light blue square. (Painters tape)

Back in June I got sent to Vegas for an emergency ransomware case, I was wearing shorts and a t-shirt on the way but was planning on putting my jeans and a button shirt (short sleeve Volcom button up, my standard consultant attire) on when I parked but it was a hundred and goddamn ten degrees out. I just put my shirt on and said fuck it. Walked in and told the PM sorry I'm not wearing pants it's a hundred and goddamn ten degrees out, I just can't do it. He said it was fine, they just needed to get back up and running.

Similarly, I (Help Desk on-call) got a call back in the day from a guy who had accidentally remotely (via modem) shut down his PC instead of restarting it. Could I go in and start it for him. This was in the time when remote access was a privilege and rare. He was in the same city as the office, I was 30 miles out, and it was Sunday afternoon. Honey, I'm watching the same football game you are.. that's a no from me. No repercussions.

We had the "it guy" for a client basically tell us if we don't show up today he's going to install the network himself. Customer was in Florida, my office in NY. My office booked me a flight for that same day, got to Florida at 10pm. Showed up in sweatpants and a white T-shirt. They looked at me weird and I said, what do you expect when you make threats...
