grew up in montreal and driving like this is normal up here so when I see stuff like this south of the border it makes me feel right at home lmao, sadly the only way to combat this is to stay glued to the cars in front and check mirrors for asshats non stop, if you leave a gap someone will try to fill it.
Since I started driving years ago I’ve passed on a little message to people who treat us drivers like shit with the way they drive around us. I am working, you are traveling. You don’t see me walking into your office job and taking a shit in your coffee pot so why would you fuck with me while I’m doing my job?
My town got a new mayor and he's cleaning the city up. One of my co-workers was pulled over for a straying across the center line briefly. A cop gave him a warning and told him that they all have orders to pull over anyone for anything and get drunk drivers off the streets
We went from a 50-something-year-old white Republican to a 27-year-old Indian Democrat. I'm in Indiana by the way. Indiana is the new Texas. Texas is the new California. Indiana is the reddest of the red
Sorry, they’re doing this bad of a job already and you’re implying the bacon needs more money? I’ve lived in that area for a few years now and only last week saw a traffic stop for the first time. I mean, literally. They don’t do fucking shit here, it’s barely a step above Philly at this point.
No one wants to be behind a commercial vehicle. People will ignore stop signs completely and cut you off just to get in front when there’s a mile gap of no cars behind you. It is very infuriating.
It is so idiotic. I am not a truck driver but I found that most truck drivers are much better drivers than the average car driver. They are professionals, they know how to drive and they are typically paid according to how fast they get to their destinations. Yes, they do not start very fast at the green light, but otherwise they rarely screw around, they just want to get going. If they stop, there is a reason.
Your mistake is thinking about most other drivers as if they are wise, rational, alert, and capable of forethought. In actuality, they are fish, fish that can somewhat travel in schools though their competence is wanting. Particularly, they are fish who can only see directly in front of them and will act erratically as soon as immediate circumstances are stressful or inconvenient. If a Cod could walk into the Department of Transportation, it doubtlessly could leave with a license as it would do slightly better at coordinating in traffic while it navigates than the average driver.
When you understand this mentality, nothing is surprising anymore.
I think for four wheelers, often the mistake is thinking about how everyone else is driving rather than how they themselves are driving.
I always tell my four wheeler friends : "The only thing you can control on the road is you. Practice being aware of your surroundings, but do NOT try and anticipate what other drivers are going to do, just execute on your own driving and you'll be fine.
I actually noticed that generally the faster I went (62 compared to 68) the more people that didn't want to be behind me but rather in front of me. Like they heard "trucks take 2 football fields to stop" and took that to mean it only affects traffic behind and not in front.
That distance seems accurate for a highway speed semi in america, european semis certainly can stop earlier. 525 feet to be specific is the number that gets thrown around, and when fully loaded on a grade or wet surface you'll definitely go over that distance in an emergency brake scenarios
I'm a trucker and even I don't want to be behind a truck, or a van, or any big vehicle that blocks my view. Especially on surface roads since I know that trucks take forever to get up to speed. That's just the normal. I give the drivers plenty of room and pass them in a sensible manner and am patient and will give way and block lanes so they can make lane changes and maneuver corners etc... but I will definitely get past them at the earliest convenience.
I will admit I’m guilty of passing a trucker and getting in because I don’t want to wait for them to go on the ramp, get back up to speed after, etc
But I do at least make sure it’s a reasonable gap, they’re not going fast and I will wave thank you
Not saying all that makes it better just saying I’m at least aware how much it must suck to just be cut off closely time and time again with no consideration and no gratitude
I'm not a trucker, but I am regularly in New Haven, so I guess I'm de-sensitized to it, but you could be in any vehicle and this will still happen to you -- it has nothing to do with being behind a commercial vehicle.
It's so prolific here that we jokingly call it a "New Haven Right Turn", because typically it involves getting into the right turn lane, putting your blinker on, then proceeding to cut off the person in the traveling lane, and usually brake-check them after successfully passing them.
Another common thing here that I've never seen anywhere is a "Stop and Chat" (thanks Curb), where a driver will see someone they know, beep their horn and have a conversation with them in the middle of the street while blocking traffic (most roads in New Haven are single lane because of on-street parking).
Generally speaking, New Haven PD doesn't even bother with traffic violations, so the only place you'll get nailed is by Yale University since they have their own police force.
Honestly I LIKE being behind a truck on the highway and freeway; consistent speed and nobody cuts you off to save .10 seconds just to cause more traffic and slow everything down again
Yeah definitely nothing wrong with cruising behind a big truck on the highway but definitely maintain a safe following distance. Also if you’re going to pass, then just gun it and do your thing. You don’t want to be following a tractor trailer closely or hang out beside it because blowouts do occur regularly as well as losing retreads and you don’t want to be following too closely when that shit happens, or be hanging out in the hammer lane beside a tire that blows for sure!
Yeah because they were already doing 20 over which is "fine" to non cdl holders. Now youre "going to slow" doing their speed limit they put in place because of the children.
OMG. I have not driven in Toronto ont in over 20 years..I decided to go on a run with my hubby to do a drop and pick up. And This!! When I was a kid I went with my dad to NY, and this is the same way they drove there, he was making that wide right turn to get to his stop, and a car tried to pass us on the right driving over the side walk and ended up hitting us, and he was the one mad about it, I remember him yelling at my dad, cussing him out because he hit us, I seen the whole thing, completely the guys fault.
I haven’t lived in CT for a long time, but visit there from time to time to see friends. It’s crazy how much more traffic there was, and how much more aggressive the drivers have become over the span of a few years.
Lots of my friends who have lived there their whole lives tell me that it’s the New York transplants that have moved to CT that is causing these problems and there is some resentment there for the CT community that’s been there long before. Especially post COVID.
Wonder if that’s the case or not. I notice the difference from my visits, but not living there in a consistent basis to know if what they say is accurate.
These are very tame New Haven drivers. There was barely any raging. I've had someone blow past me through a red using the left turn lane to go straight because I decided to stop for a red light.
I ended up directly behind them at the next light anyways. You never get much farther.
Uumm, yeah, i imagine the rage factor could escalate easily there. Why can't people just realize we're all on a road together, all trying to get to where we want to go, and fighting flow in the city never works unless you just drive absolutely bezerk.
Can confirm, born and raised in eastern CT;.., western CT & new haven was a den of a$$h0le drivers. Its along I-95, and I considered it the start of NYC, personally. The traffic feels the same for the next 4-6 hours along I -95 from Rhode island.
New englanders like to shit on Texas but we dont do this kind of bullshit. This is Mexican border town level driving. Looks like a day out and about in Reynosa!
Good lord that's so many morons in one place. I see some seriously stupid shit in Denver, but nothing this bad. I would absolutely be calling in their plates as reckless drivers for sure
This, I watched this and the first car made me mad. Then we he got split before the light changed I damn near threw my phone. Like holy fuck peeps. Can't wait for 5 seconds
I've always said anything north of Kentucky, but yes.
The first OTR company I worked for stayed up in the northeast. Not only do you get stupid drones like this everywhere, but the roads are designed in the most complicated, ass-backward way imaginable.
... now that I think about it, maybe that's why they're so angry all the time.
When I saw this video, before I saw where it was from, I was going to guess Boston, because this is how people drive over there on a regular basis. I hate driving there more than any other place in the country. Chicago is second because pedestrians just walk right out in front of you. Maybe the Boston driving culture is spreading elsewhere in New England now?
I will never understand. This shit happening constantly just for you to pull up behind them at the next stoplight.
My favorite too is watching people have panic attacks behind my truck cutting through multiple lanes to pass me. And minute or two later, I'll get off at an exit and pull up next to them at a stoplight. How can they not realize it doesn't get them anywhere?
I've been thinking truckers really ought to catch up to the vanlife crowd, they've got loads of non-apu electrical setup figured out. I hate running generators (APUs because they need a funny name in a truck, I guess) can't stand the fumes, the noise, or the added maintenance.
No lie. For all the bitching people do about emissions on trucks nowadays. I enjoy that I can stand next to the exhaust and not be overwhelmed by fumes. When I stand next to the truck, having a smoke at the end of the day (irony about exhaust complaints isn't lost on me), the APU exhaust makes me want to move up wind. And I worked in a shop for 10 years. Exhaust and heavy fumes aren't a new thing for me. Just heavy exhaust, regardless of source without emissions, isn't fun for anyone.
Hey the solar systems are pretty handy, say your batteries go bad like all four of mine did recently it’s not the end of the world. I have the optimize idle system and for the past few months its been turning on more and more pretty much saying batterires are going bad. Once they finally got too bad the truck wouldn’t auto start until the next morning depending on angle of sun to panels, it took about a couple hours for truck to get started. This allowed me to solar power run the truck for nearly a week until I got to our yard for repairs saving quite a bit of money.
Even with a police escort those fuckers try the stupidest shit ever.
I had a ct trooper one tell me "atleast in ny and nj, their drivers are aggressive but they CAN drive, the ct drivers are just downright retarded and terrible drivers 24/7"
I remember my first time driving in BOSTON in a rig. I'm from the south and I was amazed at how fast and how close all the cars drove to each other. And using your turn signal was a waste of time, no one paid any attention to it. It was sitting the second day waiting to see if someone would let me out into traffic that I figured it out. They will not slow down to let you into traffic. They don't want to waste time waiting on you to make up your mind you either go or you don't. So basically they all EXPECT you to cut them off to get in, it's the complete opposite of the south. And they don't get mad they just adjust to you moving in front of them. So to get into a flow of traffic just pull out at the safest time even when it doesn't look like they are slowing down to let you in, they will and it's just normal up there. In New York city I pulled up to a traffic light and there were seven lanes of traffic sitting at the light in front of me. When the light turned green everyone floored it and then I realized there were only four actual marked lanes of travel at the light. That nightmare took awhile to get used to, lane marking wasn't even a suggestion it was just a waste of paint.
The problem is that there are no consequences to driving like these people are doing. Unfortunately driving is treated like a right and not a privilege.
Report every single one of those license plates and send the video to both state and local police however you can. Only way to stop that behavior is to hold them responsible with the proper authority.
I had a similar situation. There was a rail crossing before a light that I stopped at because I knew I wasn’t going to get over it completely. The first couple of cars that drove past me I let slide because they were filling up the empty road but the third and fourth cars parked their asses on the rails in front of me. Talk about dumb ways to die.
Omg. 😂 I used to live in Westville and worked downtown. I could have shaved five minutes off my commute if I went to their driving school! Thanks for sharing!
I like that I wasn't paying attention to the neighborhood, and once I saw everyone passing you, I knew exactly where you were and it was confirmed when I saw the park on your left.
I've been driving down that stretch for 20 years (frequently for random spurts, not currently) and people have been doing that the entire time.
If I have learned one thing about the human race in America and quite a few other countries nowadays. It is this, they are selfish, self-centered, and completely uncaring drivers. They will cut you off or do whatever they feel like when behind the wheel with no care for the safety of others or themselves. It's a large pool of future Darwin awards on the road anymore and the only reason they don't earn them is because there are about 30% of the population who drive with respect and consideration for the safety of others and themselves and they get lucky those are the drivers they do stupid things around. It's sad to see and it does not bode well for our future.
You know there is a law that states No four wheeler are allowed to be behind a semi at anytime. If you have to cut cars off and disobey road signs it is permissible in order to be in front of a semi truck. Yes this is total bullshit but that’s what it seems like to me sometimes
I see those signs when driving through CT about the number of traffic deaths this year so far. Well, maybe if there was some enforcement of traffic lawns the number of fatalities would drop…? Just maybe.
I was up on rt11 in NY and crawling through the little villages. Had a guy bitching on the CB, at least until I was able to stop on a dime because a little girl came zipping out from a side street on a scooter. I always think about it like this: they might still hit the rig, but at least I'm stopped and it's more like running into a warm wall.
I saw one single person do this over a year ago and it was so baffling me and my wife still occasionally bring it up, like "remember that car that just went around everyone..."
But CT drivers here are commenting that shit happens on a daily basis there?!
All you can really do in that situation is just maintain your lane and don't let them get to you. If there's gonna be an accident, let it be their fault. After all, that's why we have dash cams in the first place.
Pretty sure booby trapping a vehicle is not legal in the US, just as booby trapping a home or other building isn’t (at least for most states.) If it was something that could be activated at will I’m pretty sure the law would consider it weaponizing a vehicle which is probably against federal laws at that point. Either way cops won’t be too happy to realize you have a way to vaporize them while they stand beside the car.
Eggs, paintball, piss jugs (might be a biohazard) etc. are all something that can possibly cause lasting damage and be found for evidence. Go with ice cubes. You chuck an ice cube at a person/vehicle and it’s going to either hurt or cause a dent but unless the middle of winter or someone catches it on camera, it’s going to be melted by the time law enforcement responds. I’m not suggesting anyone to use something that may or may not leave no tangible evidence, merely suggesting that it /could/ work 👍
Could always try boring them with an extremely dull drawn out conversation until they want to off themselves unless that’s just something my dad tried doing every time I went to a store with him & he saw someone he knew.
Ahh the old “wait 40 minutes for my mom to talk to her old friend she saw at the blockbuster when I just wanna go home and play the new 2k game on my ps2”
I'm of the opinion this type of driving is increasing everywhere and fewer people are rational. I have too many people tailgate in traffic like this, not allowing for sudden emergency stops. Plus, there's traffic ahead, where the fk do they yhink they can go ⁉️
I now drive miles out of my way to avoid this behavior!
Not a truck driver.. just a guy who lives in Ct. I think that Ct. has the worst drivers in the country!!! Of course I have not been through the whole country like many of you guys have but iits ridiculous here. The roads we're not built for the amount of traffic and people do not know how to merge, drive, stop and start. Frustrating.
Reminds me of a crazy video of traffic in India, where everyone is trying to get in front of everyone, be it a truck, an ambulance or even a firetruck with lights on.
I wish dashcam footage could be put to good use and issue a hefty ticket to all of these idiots. In Missouri they have “C&I” (Careless and Imprudent Driving) as a standard type of ticket the cops can issue.
They're doing it like it will extend their lives by these seconds they won doing illegal maneuvers around big rigs. And for what? To sit behind the office table making countless spreadsheets like in Office Space?
This content is infuriating. Often content on here is people making mistakes. Mistakes are frustrating but they are not purposeful. Driving like these people is so dangerous and should be immediate loss of driving privileges.

Buprenorphine92@reddit
I will never understand. This shit happening constantly just for you to pull up behind them at the next stoplight.
My favorite too is watching people have panic attacks behind my truck cutting through multiple lanes to pass me. And minute or two later, I'll get off at an exit and pull up next to them at a stoplight. How can they not realize it doesn't get them anywhere?

Ornery_Ads@reddit (OP)
It's supposed to keep the batteries charged to power a fridge and cameras...I think it actually powered psychosis in the drivers around it.
(This used to be a backup truck that would sit for weeks)
Black000betty@reddit
I've been thinking truckers really ought to catch up to the vanlife crowd, they've got loads of non-apu electrical setup figured out. I hate running generators (APUs because they need a funny name in a truck, I guess) can't stand the fumes, the noise, or the added maintenance.
FeralGangrel@reddit
Just heavy exhaust, regardless of source without emissions, isn't fun for anyone.
duhrun@reddit
Hey the solar systems are pretty handy, say your batteries go bad like all four of mine did recently it’s not the end of the world. I have the optimize idle system and for the past few months its been turning on more and more pretty much saying batterires are going bad. Once they finally got too bad the truck wouldn’t auto start until the next morning depending on angle of sun to panels, it took about a couple hours for truck to get started. This allowed me to solar power run the truck for nearly a week until I got to our yard for repairs saving quite a bit of money.

ShortCurlies@reddit
That nightmare took awhile to get used to, lane marking wasn't even a suggestion it was just a waste of paint.
low_key@reddit
The problem is that there are no consequences to driving like these people are doing. Unfortunately driving is treated like a right and not a privilege.

I like that I wasn't paying attention to the neighborhood, and once I saw everyone passing you, I knew exactly where you were and it was confirmed when I saw the park on your left.

Ok_Caterpillar3655@reddit
If I have learned one thing about the human race in America and quite a few other countries nowadays. It is this, they are selfish, self-centered, and completely uncaring drivers. They will cut you off or do whatever they feel like when behind the wheel with no care for the safety of others or themselves. It's a large pool of future Darwin awards on the road anymore and the only reason they don't earn them is because there are about 30% of the population who drive with respect and consideration for the safety of others and themselves and they get lucky those are the drivers they do stupid things around. It's sad to see and it does not bode well for our future.

Mister_Meenor@reddit

Nero-Danteson@reddit
I was up on rt11 in NY and crawling through the little villages. Had a guy bitching on the CB, at least until I was able to stop on a dime because a little girl came zipping out from a side street on a scooter. I always think about it like this: they might still hit the rig, but at least I'm stopped and it's more like running into a warm wall.
J-Ricky@reddit
Are those solar panels on your hood? If yes, that's a pretty cool setup. 😎
smile_u-r_alive@reddit

AliveWeird4230@reddit
I saw one single person do this over a year ago and it was so baffling me and my wife still occasionally bring it up, like "remember that car that just went around everyone..." But CT drivers here are commenting that shit happens on a daily basis there?!
Yesouisi01@reddit
As a New Haven resident this looks routine.
HeadyRoosevelt@reddit
New Haven resident here. It’s actually normally much worse than the video illustrates.
MotoJimmy_151@reddit

CaseyGamer64YT@reddit
there's a reason I want to do OTR instead of regional once I get my CDL so I don't have to deal with my states shitty roads and animalistic drivers.
Jimjam916@reddit
All you can really do in that situation is just maintain your lane and don't let them get to you. If there's gonna be an accident, let it be their fault. After all, that's why we have dash cams in the first place.
IrishWithoutPotatoes@reddit
Yeah that tracks for CT drivers. Sorry bro.

Yes, they are legal in South Africa, not sure about the US though.
Slayer7_62@reddit
I’m not suggesting anyone to use something that may or may not leave no tangible evidence, merely suggesting that it /could/ work 👍
xYEET_LORDx@reddit
Another option is vehicular manslaughter. Less time in prison than murder, assuming you don’t get any other charges
Slayer7_62@reddit
Could always try boring them with an extremely dull drawn out conversation until they want to off themselves unless that’s just something my dad tried doing every time I went to a store with him & he saw someone he knew.
xYEET_LORDx@reddit
Ahh the old “wait 40 minutes for my mom to talk to her old friend she saw at the blockbuster when I just wanna go home and play the new 2k game on my ps2”
Slayer7_62@reddit
“Oh it’s too late to play that game now sweetie. It’s going to be bedtime soon. Best to wait until tomorrow now.”
wasabiplz@reddit
I'm of the opinion this type of driving is increasing everywhere and fewer people are rational. I have too many people tailgate in traffic like this, not allowing for sudden emergency stops. Plus, there's traffic ahead, where the fk do they yhink they can go ⁉️ I now drive miles out of my way to avoid this behavior!
Own-Ad-503@reddit
Not a truck driver.. just a guy who lives in Ct. I think that Ct. has the worst drivers in the country!!! Of course I have not been through the whole country like many of you guys have but iits ridiculous here. The roads we're not built for the amount of traffic and people do not know how to merge, drive, stop and start. Frustrating.

I wish dashcam footage could be put to good use and issue a hefty ticket to all of these idiots. In Missouri they have “C&I” (Careless and Imprudent Driving) as a standard type of ticket the cops can issue.

Absolute fucking lawlessness. 🤷♂️
