Why does the Dude’s front door open outwards? It’s clearly a violation of California building code.

This beautiful bastard. I was researching the same last night. I learned that in Florida it has to open out by code due to hurricanes.
ThreetoedJack@reddit
I know nothing -nothing I say, but it seems like the door should swing inwards because of hurricanes. If a big tree drops in front of the outward swinging door, it'll block you inside the house. But if the door swings inwards, it's impossible to block the door from the outside?
Like I said, I'm a nihilist regarding building codes -I have no beliefs one way or the other.

damnatio_memoriae@reddit
how does that work? does that just mean you have to have a storm door? or do people just have one main door that opens out?
Alittlemoorecheese@reddit
I don't think this is true unless it's very recent. For a while, Florida was trying to mandate inswing entrances for fire ingress. (I used to install doors in Florida).
Alittlemoorecheese@reddit
I can't find anything saying that. I used to install doors in Florida. Front doors are usually inswing for fire egress. Garage entrances and back doors are usually outswing. I remember Frolrida was trying to make it mandatory for the main entrance to be inswing for fire code but I don't think that ever happened.
Every house I've lived in (in Florida) had an inswinging front door. Did they make a change in the last 8 years or so?

philburns@reddit
Isn’t this guy supposed to be a millionaire?
DragonHateReddit@reddit
You must be asking sarcastically. Movie, its outward opening only for a laugh.
useless_modern_god@reddit (OP)
Of course I am dude. It’s highly irregular for front doors to open outwards(back then anyway). But the cool thing is the Coens at least kept the continuity throughout the film regardless of comic effect.
The other interesting thing is, outward opening doors are way harder to break in to, so you’ll notice that all of the intrusion scenes have the thugs and nihilists already in the house somehow (with the exception of the chair gag scene)
DragonHateReddit@reddit
It could have possibly made the scene funnier with the door opening with a chair there. If they had shown other places with regular doors. That way, the emphasis on dudes. It's drug idle brain would be more obviyes.
Fifthmadmaxmovie@reddit
This chair bit is my first memory of a movie. For years I didn’t know where I had seen this scene because I was too young to remember more than 1 bit in the movie. The bit had always stuck with me and when I saw the big Lebowski as a teenager I could finally know where one of my first memories came from

FLKEYSFish@reddit
Storm code. Exterior does must open outward.
th3l33tbmc@reddit
No. Exterior doors must by code open in the direction of egress—outward.
FLKEYSFish@reddit
But why? I’ve seen doors installed both ways. I live in a hurricane prone area and it was explained to me by a contractor that outward doors are less vulnerable to the wind and pressure of storms. Makes sense in my limited scope. Is the code you speak of specific to a certain area?
th3l33tbmc@reddit
Good question! I mean, if you’re panicked and fleeing a fire, maybe having the door open outward makes opening it in a hurry easier?
It makes sense to me that in an earthquake where trees or other debris might end up blocking the door from outside, you’d want it to open in. I dunno, I can see multiple factors and am not an expert. 🤔
For what it’s worth, the exterior door of my homes in California both open inward. So I dunno what the fuck is going on, heh.
Dapper-Code8604@reddit
Because the scene wouldn’t be funny otherwise.

jackasspenguin@reddit
Were you listening to the codes story? It only requires doors to swing out in assembly occupancies, it never requires them to swing in! Dios mio man.
therealtwomartinis@reddit

therealtwomartinis@reddit

Action_Jackson_SFW@reddit
Wrong code. CBC 11A governs, but based on the vintage of the Dude’s abode, I’m sure the Authority Having Jurisdiction likely applied the correct requirements…maybe 85 UBC? This assumes no later additions or modifications, and that the complex is (4) or more attached dwelling units. Dude’s floor got a little F-Ed up though. Might violate a number of Fire Department egress rules.
5319Camarote@reddit
Serious question; in 1990, would Marty the landlord have to upgrade all of the doors to a 1930s dwelling? Or do the codes only apply to new structures built after, say, 1970?

I always assumed Marty was just the super and the landlord was some rich fucks. Probably an LLC.

laaazlo@reddit
Assuming the location I found online is correct (606 Venezia Ave in Venice), the building was erected in 1928 and had no permitted work after that but before the date of filming, so presumably whatever building code Venice/LA was using in 1928 would apply. The first ever UBC was published 1927 so that may be the one, but I have no idea if it would have been widely adopted just a year after its creation. I also have no idea what it says about the swing direction of exterior doors but I did notice that an individual permit was pulled for each unit, so they may not have been treated as multi-family at the time of building.
murphanduncas@reddit
The original UBC. Not the compromised second draft.
Action_Jackson_SFW@reddit
Good get on the address. And the covered doorways. But California has had a bunch of amateurs running things in Sacramento since way before ‘Nam. The state’s mishmash codes were only unified in the 80’s. First with public and commercial, with residential to follow a few years later. No_Stress_22@reddit
If that's true then that's a really dumb and dangerous code. Since outside swinging doors are much more difficult for burglars and home invaders to kick in the door in the first place. Outside swinging doors also make it easier to escape a burning building if you're somehow stuck inside. And if people are panicked from something like an active shooter or raging fire inside the building and start dog piling on a door that opens inwards then they're trapped. There's a good reason why all to code emergency exists use a push bar to open and open outwards.
