RockAuto. How do they do it?
Posted by Bobo_Baggins03x@reddit | askcarguys | View on Reddit | 478 comments
I live in rural Canada and prices are insane up here. Every time I need car parts I source locally then end up ordering from RockAuto. Just today, I priced everything I need for my car at my local NAPA which came to over $600 CAD which included a remanufactured brake calliper. I instead ordered OEM parts from RockAuto, including a brand new brake calliper, for $360 which includes shipping and taxes.
How in the world can RockAuto ship me heavy, large car parts from fucking Wisconsin to my door for half the price of me going to town and buying off the shelf? God bless RockAuto.
Plenty_Ask_6106@reddit
Is the subtotal price on rock auto in cad or usd?
imtougherthanyou@reddit
Rockauto is like Amazon. It connects warehouses that have goods to buyers that want them. No middlemen except the website, so very little overhead. If you have a building full of New Old Stock and just want to get rid of it, rockauto is there for you.
dicknows714@reddit
You realize that by buying from places like that you're putting your local shop out of business.
Glad_Adhesiveness_53@reddit
Napa, autozone, oreily all charge up the ass
MABreland@reddit
I have used RockAuto twice and they sent me the wrong part both times I've tried to use them. They wanted to charge me return shipping ($40) and a restocking fee of 20% for THEIR mistake.
I sincerely hope I just have bad luck and this isn't normal... But I've learned my lesson. No more RockAuto.
DoctorSquibb420@reddit
AND they give you a cool magnet in every box!
The_Dutch_Canadian@reddit
Sadly i haven’t gotten one in the past 5 orders :(
SSNs4evr@reddit
I don't think they're allowed to send the magnets there. As Dan Aykroyd explained to John Candy in that scene in "Canadian Bacon," everything has to be spelled out in English and French. Since the magnets are only in English, it's probably illegal to send them your way. 😃
striykker@reddit
Just opened my order 20 minutes ago. Magnet in the box. Ontario.

SSNs4evr@reddit
The first you're hearing of rockauto magnets? You sir, should be the offended one....you'd better get rockauto on the phone right now. You're being shorted, on a basic staple of every parts order.
My daughter even made fun of me last weekend when I was looking for my magnet. She said I looked like a 6yo, looking for the toy in a cereal box. I was so proud....she's only 15, and she truly gets me.

JesTeR1862@reddit
So, from my understanding, rockauto will get parts that are essentially either overstock, warehouse closing, or part is about to be discontinued for pennies on the dollar. I'm talking dealership warehouses. That's how they have OEM parts as well.
ChuckFeathers@reddit
Because Canadian parts stores are set up to supply repair shops, not consumers, and because Rockauto acts as a distributor liquidator and has a business plan akin to Amazon/eBay, deal in massive volumes and small margins.
broke_fit_dad@reddit
They don’t have stores, retail personnel or house branded parts. They also don’t use the traditional markup rates.
Individual-Nebula927@reddit
Also they don't spend much on their website. Like the reason McMaster-Carr is a favorite for engineers, it's as simple as can be to get the point across.
BurritoBandito8@reddit
Love this site. You can FIND stuff! Sure it's boring but utilitarian and organized are much more valuable than cool or slick.

labrador2020@reddit
I have worked rebuilding and repairing vehicles (cars, motorcycles, etc.) since I was 7 years old. Hanging out at junk yards and parts stores is relaxing for me.
I always wanted to know what it would be like to work at an auto parts store. A few years ago, I was able to get a job at Autozone. Got paid $9 an hour.
It was a nightmare from day one and nothing like I expected. The customers were demeaning and rude, I had to deal with thieves, some of the coworkers were difficult to get along because everyone wanted more hours and me being there took that from them.
Being the new person, I had to sweep the parking lot, mop the floors, clean the bathroom, empty the oil containers and petty things like that instead of working on parts and testing equipment.
And of course, the POS system was very antiquated and mainframe-based. The front-end system is not designed well as a POS as it takes forever to find stuff and you have to go back and forth and open multiple windows to do a single transaction. No GUI interface at all.
You have to provide your own “uniform” clothing at your own expense, which gets damaged quickly from battery acid, oil spills, etc.
I stayed for a few months and had enough. It was not what I had imagined at all. I would still like to work at a junk yard though.
Ok-Bit4971@reddit
That's just wrong. My brother used to work at O'Reilly and he had to pay for his work uniforms also. These were shirts that had the company logo on them.
bananaj0e@reddit
Yeah fuck that, even McDonald's paid for my uniforms (shirts, pants, shoes, hat) when I worked there during highschool, 2008-2010.
lefthandedsnek@reddit
damn. just today the guy located the part i needed in the computer in like 15 seconds, maybe they’ve upgraded. i told him my model name vehicle and he had the part number basically as soon as he had typed it in and hit enter, a little rear running light bulb
luv2race1320@reddit
That's cool. It sounds like you had the typical AZ experience. My local store seems pretty chill, compared to others that I have had to stop at. It's a mid size town without a lot of crappy people, so they probably have it a bit better than most.
old_guy_AnCap@reddit
My biggest problem with AutoZone is that there's no way for them to clean up old records for parts and vehicles. I have cars I haven't owned for over 20 years still in my purchase history making it very time consuming to find part warranties. The one thing I love is that as far as I can find they are the only parts supplier that can look up a warranty anywhere in the country. I have heard rumors that O'Reilly can if the person at the computer is particularly skilled but the best I have had experience with there is that their systems are highly regionalized. I love Discount Tire for the same reason. A true nationwide warranty with no hassle accessing the data and plenty of stores across the country.
luvrv8@reddit
I worked at AutoZone when it was called AutoShack, must be using the same computer system.
allurboobsRbelong2us@reddit
Yup, as a former autozone hub driver, I did my best to never touch the sales machines
Much_Dealer8865@reddit
I worked the parts counter at Canadian Tire when I was 17, i lost interest in car parts pretty quickly lol
jdog1067@reddit
Anyone can work at auto zone, and if you want to learn more about cars I definitely recommend it, but I’ve been there for almost 11 months and I am about to lose my shit. Don’t stay long. It’s fucking miserable, even if the people are good. The customers aren’t. Corporate isn’t. Fuck autozone. Definitely a better and more fulfilling first job than McDonald’s. Or holdover job.
NaturallyExasperated@reddit
Also as a devops guy I bet you their hosting bills are like $25 a month. Their website is TINY compared to most modern JavaScript monstrosities
thejman78@reddit
Yeah you're not thinking about all the infrastructure behind the site. They're updating hundreds of thousands of SKUs monthly, routing orders to different warehouses for fulfillment hourly, updating inventory every few minutes, and serving hundreds of users at a time. Their server bills aren't cheap.
SaurSig@reddit
If you like that try Grainger
Mountain_Cucumber_88@reddit
I use macmaster carr quite often too. Love it.
Patient-Tech@reddit
They have everything, but if you shop around, they’re not cutting deals. They are a one-stop-shop.
Bork_King@reddit
McMaster is geared towards industry. Paying a premium and having it next day is the value when everyday is thousands of dollars and over head or much more if you're losing production, the fact that McMaster sells to anyone is incredible, I'm surprised it's not just business to business.
Love_my_imperfection@reddit
Same reason why our business orders from Uline, they're more expensive, don't have anything close to us so we have to get orders shipped, and most importantly they're terrible people to support.
Buuuuut business is business, their prices aren't that much higher (really it's just shipping), their products are of noticeably higher quality, and the fact that their stock/shipments are consistently on time means we order from them even if we could penny pinch at other places.
Tje199@reddit
I've got a few businesses that I'd really rather not support but you're right, business is business. It's one thing if it were only a few percent different but when the price differences are 10-20% I can't not buy from them...
Patient-Tech@reddit
True, and that's how I became aware of them. In a pinch, that's great. But the guys always ordered from there because they had open PO's. It's just rough that they spent an extra ten grand on parts if they would have shopped around. Especially on things that aren't required to be in hand the next day. Some projects have a couple weeks and the savings can really add up.
egrier65@reddit
Same, but I use them to get CAD models for Solidworks. They have just about anything you need!
Nightenridge@reddit
I absolutely love their no bullshit, no graphics website. Straight up information you need, in a list, perfectly categorized without additional webpages and further useless images and graphics.
G_W_Atlas@reddit
Rock Auto's website is amazing. So user-friendly and purpose built.
gofish223@reddit
It's so simple it's refreshing. Like going back in time when the internet wasn't as schizo. I do wish they had basic customer reviews though!
thejman78@reddit
Eh, that site is pretty sophisticated. Probably costs a LOT to keep product data updated, make sure fitment data is accurate, etc. I bet they spend millions a year on it.
osorojo_@reddit
McMaster is not cheap lmao. Its just reliable and the price difference on the part is not worth engineer salary to find somewhere else
Individual-Nebula927@reddit
I'm talking about the website design, not the cost of the products. Lol
seventwosixnine@reddit
McMaster-Carr's website is exactly what a website should be. Same with RockAuto. Stupid simple, no bullshit.
I also love that the McMaster book looks like they just printed out the website.
ihavenoidea81@reddit
McMaster Carr might be the most logical, well made ordering platform on the planet.
I would probably take me 10 seconds to find a reverse threaded 14.9 stainless steel bolt that’s 3.085” long AND 28” of LDPE braided hose with a 0.578” I.D.
Used to work near a warehouse because I could order it in the morning and I’d have it by the end of the day. Love those guys
LiverPickle@reddit
To be fair, McMaster-Carr has 3D CAD drawings of most parts for the engineers….that has a lot to do with it
rattlesnake501@reddit
And they have 3d model files for a lot of their stuff. That's a big part of the reason engineers like it.
Being able to find something on McMaster and download a stp file instead of trying to reverse engineer something you may or may not actually physically have to pull measurements from is a lifesaver. Even if I have to order from a different vendor, I have often looked to see if McMaster stocks the part so I can use their stp file in the design work instead of spending hours modeling it myself.

I swear it's the exact same page I've used for 20 years. Maybe some changes on the pay options
ghunt81@reddit
Maybe this is why I love both sites. Simple, to the point and very easy to use.
MisterEinc@reddit
Also also the cheap parts are... Thin. I got a front radiator mount from them and I swear it was maybe 22 or 18 gage. Does seem like a big difference but even the shift from 18 to 16 gage is noticeable.
Bobo_Baggins03x@reddit (OP)
Yeah this makes sense. Still hard for me to accept that people that don’t know cars will just accept those prices or, even worse, have the garage source the parts from NAPA at a 20% markup.
HentiFapperSupreme@reddit
You can open business accounts with local stores and get the same price or equivalent to rockauto. Places like bensons, caps you only need a name and fill in 1 page of information. It helps if you’re in a pickle and need parts same day. But otherwise I order form rockauto too. There’s no monthly charge for accounts either…
03zx3@reddit
If you need to fix your car today, what else are you going to do?
ImReallyFuckingHigh@reddit
Yea RA is a luxury to those who want to stock up on consumables or can let their car sit for a few days while they wait for parts. But if you need your car running by tomorrow you don’t really have a choice but going to a local parts store. Still cheaper than going to the dealer but you get what you pay for
Individual-Nebula927@reddit
Sometimes you need to make friends with the dealer parts guy. I usually get parts from RockAuto, but the GM dealership gave me the name of the wholesaler they use in town. If I need a pay immediately, that's by far the cheapest way to get name brand parts. Usually cheaper than Autozone or O'Reilly house brands.
Dumb-ox73@reddit
I would agree, but my local auto parts stores usually have to order any vehicle specific part from their warehouse, resulting in a one to two day wait anyway. With a markup that is usually 2x compared to Rockauto, the wait is usually worth it because by the time O’Reilly, Autozone, NAPA, etc get it in, you need to make other arrangements for getting around anyway.
A few months ago I had the runaround with O’Reilly for an intake manifold gasket they said they had in stock at my local store, then said they would get in the same day. Two days later they finally had it. A Rockauto order for another part was on my doorstep in the same amount of time. If I had ordered the gasket from Rockauto I would have had the part at less than half the price and delivered to my door.
Fresh_Salt7087@reddit
Yea I had some similar issues with autozone a dozen years ago. If I need to pick up from multiple stores to have what I need. Or go pay them and wait a day or two and go back.. might as well let fedex bring it to me and save money too.
What really frosted me was it parts for fairly common stuff so I thought. S10 alternator, starter etc. I get s10 are out of production but damn they made millions of them and used common components on other vehicles in the GM line up. But they have no parts stocked at local stores. On the other hand they have chrome muffler tips and under body lights on hand 🤔
Ok-Bit4971@reddit

canofmixedveggies@reddit
I used to have a Napa distribution center/store in town, I could get anything and the guy that worked there knew absolutely everything (even marine engines).
they closed it, shuffled the guy all over town, I feel bad for him.
anyway they were 4x the cost on the bearings for my little car as rockauto and Amazon, I wanted SKF based on information I read online and the warranty. Napa I guess rebrands SKF but doesn't provide the warranty at an incredible markup even with a 30% off sale it wasn't worth going there.
I used to absolutely love Napa, but their inventory system is a joke (one bin to rule them all, I bought 4 spark plugs on a sealed box and each one was a different size) and if they don't take care of their staff that provide the reason to go there what's the point.
gears2021@reddit
I recently got a quoted a price from NAPA for a front brake caliper $180 dollars.
I Phoned PartsSource and got one for $104. NAPA prices seem very high anymore.
DPileatus@reddit
Yes! Bring us coffee & donuts!
SpaceAgePotatoCakes@reddit
Depends, if your car isn't very common sometimes the local parts store takes longer to actually get it in than RA.
Sparky_Zell@reddit
And it's even worse if there is a problem with the part. With a local store, you can still go back and swap it out, and wrench as long as you need to get back to work the next day.
A lot of people cannot wait the few days for the part, and then realize it's going to be an extra few days to 2 weeks to get through the return process and have the correct parts.
Ok-Half8705@reddit
I once had to wait three weeks for a part that I had ordered at a dealership because my only car decided to blow a coolant hose. The dealership was the closest shop less than a quarter mile so I limped it there keeping an eye on temps. I use my car to make money so it was aggravating being useless for so long with no income.
derick_for_real@reddit
Easy. Go buy the part you need from local auto parts store. Fix your vehicle with said part. Order the exact same part from rock auto. When part is delivered, put it in the back from local store and return it and get your money back.
MountainFace2774@reddit
This is key. I recently ordered some stuff from RA and when I got into the project, realized I needed more stuff. So I had to go to Advance to get the rest. Paid about double what I could've got it for off RA but I had to have it that day or leave my wife's car on jack stands.
Ok-Bit4971@reddit
Ha, my wife's car has been on jack stands for about 3 weeks. I let her drive my car. Thankfully my employer lets me take a company vehicle home.
mikeysd123@reddit
Has no one here heard of parts authority? I always liken it to the physical RockAuto. Similar pricing and selection, stock almost everything and if not can usually have it there within a day.
03zx3@reddit
Never heard of it. Probably a regional thing.
mikeysd123@reddit
Looks like they spread a decent amount but seem to be relatively concentrated in the northeast by me.
https://partsauthority.com/
If you’re close to one i highly recommend.
Icy_Truth_9634@reddit
They are in many regions. Parts Authority is wonderful. I have spoken to the President of that company. He is a down to earth good man. They purchased IMC a few years ago. There is also a broad reach with that warehouse supplier.
mikeysd123@reddit
Thats great to hear. I’ve been going to parts authority for 10yrs+ and they have always been my go to when i need things in a pinch. Their onhand stock is truly impressive, unless its some obscure older model they are going to have every part you need. RockAuto is a very close second for me though.
Andeo1025@reddit
I use them at work and all the time at home.
mikeysd123@reddit
Yeah i worked in a small repair shop in highschool and we had an account with them. Being able to have whatever you need delivered straight to the shop within like 30 mins was truly an amazing experience.
Remarkable-Host405@reddit
If you need to fix it tomorrow, you can often wait for Amazon.
Amazon has become my go to with next or even same day delivery. They're stocking Chinese junk, but so is rock auto economy listings that you were going to buy anyway.
03zx3@reddit
Cool. What if you need it today?
You might.
Bobo_Baggins03x@reddit (OP)

03zx3@reddit
You will
shamair28@reddit
Because I can drive to my local NAPA, get parts, and start working on it in the same day. Depending on the item, I’m not saving as much factoring in duties and shipping.
broke_fit_dad@reddit
9 of 10 times I can use my shop discount and after shipping RA is more expensive.
When I worked in a parts store / shop combo our markup rate was +30%
DizzyCommunication92@reddit
Ive heard of this....cause they "mark up the price" but then give you all "shop discounts" and....most should have you all as tax-exempt on file since the customer is paying the tax
broke_fit_dad@reddit
I’m currently not with a Tax Exempt company , we just spend a lot of money with our vendor and we have a great reputation in town.
Previously my former employer was part of a wholesale group and Wholesale + 30% = Retail. Customers could get discounts or loose discounts and there was a Shop sale discount on top of a customers counter discount but the lowest normal discount was Wholesale + 10%
cd36jvn@reddit
Ya I used to think that way. Now I have my own business, and I have the phone number of the local auto parts place in town that I can text. If my truck is down and I can't work, that extra couple hundred saved is peanuts suddenly waiting a week for parts to arrive from rock auto versus having them that day.
You are paying for the convenience of having parts immediately. That is what the markup is.
schiesse@reddit
They also have a website that looks like it was designed in VB by a college student
Doctorphate@reddit
What? They have branded parts.
sideburns2009@reddit
They are email only contact as well.
thejman78@reddit
They absolutely have house brands, they're just very careful about hiding that fact.
ALL major auto parts retailers have house brands. They're everywhere.
InaYarden@reddit
Exactly, they're mostly a clearing house not unlike Amazon. They warehouse some items but mostly items are shipped direct from the source
MillennialMadMan@reddit
Market place is the term you’re looking for. Clearing houses process stock trades.
Effective_Ad_8437@reddit
They have Ultra-Power as their “house brand.”
doozerman@reddit
They generally don’t have warehouses either. When I worked for a major auto supplier, a corner of the warehouse was for rockauto
Unlearnypoo@reddit
I just did the same thing. Was replacing pads with rotors on my car. Was going to buy from NAPA ($850) for ceramic pads and "premium rotors". Ended up going with some power stop geomet coated rotors, and ceramic pads. Like $250 for the parts, and $110 in shipping. Even comes with silicone lubricant for the slider pins. It arrived in 3 days! What a steal. How can NAPA charge so much?
03zx3@reddit
Every chain parts store has to have a building, utilities, and staff.
Rock Auto doesn't have to lose all the money lost in the storefront. That's a lot of savings.
AutoZone has like 6000 stores. Each of those stores has at least somewhere around 6 employees. Larger stores have more. Power, water, insurance, taxes, and employee wages for every store adds up to a lot of money.
PlentyDiscussion3993@reddit
Let's not act like that's the reason things are marked up 300%. It's 100% greed and preying upon the average person's reliance on a car coupled with the lack of knowledge and the time required to learn about them without pursuing a career in the automotive field
running101@reddit
I look at it this way you are paying a convenience fee. Because you can just go right to the store and pick up your part immediately versus rock auto you may have to wait a few days to get the part..
PlentyDiscussion3993@reddit
Again though, how can that justify a 300% increase. I don't think I know a single person who'd be willing to make that trade. Its more so the average person doesn't know they could get a part from rock auto. They just think the AutoZone prices are the normal prices. And most mechanics aren't going to be getting parts from rock auto as they can't afford to sit on cars for days for parts. Then they add their own mark ups on top of it. Leads to the wild situation we're currently in
03zx3@reddit
Both can be true, you know.
But it's obvious that having a store in every town is much more expensive than just having a few warehouses you ship things out of.
not_a_gay_stereotype@reddit
Some of the parts stores where I live could buy the part from rock auto and mark it up 20% and still be less than half of what they're asking
03zx3@reddit
Okay?
Please show me the exact part where I said greed wasn't part of it?
BurritoBandito8@reddit
Woah buddy! Don't bring nuance into this conversation. I like being angry.
stillhaveissues@reddit
In my (limited) experience local places have raised prices dramatically in the last few years. I drive newer card these days so I don't buy many auto parts but it appears brick and mortar retailers have raised prices 250% or more while rock auto has stayed about the same.
Basic_Armadillo_972@reddit
The difference in pricing comes down to RockAuto's ability to leverage economies of scale, lower operational costs, and more efficient global sourcing. Local retailers in rural areas often face higher costs due to logistics, markups, and limited competition. While it’s great that you’ve found a cost-effective solution with RockAuto, it’s a reminder of the challenges many face in rural areas with access to affordable parts.

TableDowntown3082@reddit
They also have no customer service. Like that's not even an exaggeration. They literally do not have customer service.
chainmailler2001@reddit
Basically it is like buying wholesale. Your local auto parts store has a LOT of overhead for employees, building costs, utilities, etc plus they have their own warehouses and delivery drivers. Rockauto doesn't have anything after the warehouse. Their costs are lower and they pass that on.
spud123456@reddit
I miss when rock auto had free shipping over 200$ then the deals were insane. Now the shipping is almost as much as the parts and it is very similar prices to local auto parts store all said and done.
Anxious_Marsupial_84@reddit
I too am a fan of RockAuto. Use their services all the time. Rural Canadian as well. Buuut... if you set up a "master mechanics" account at NAPA it will save you 20 to 35% off retail just for the asking. What they don't tell you is, anyone can do it. You don't have to be a mechanic, just an account holder. Occasionally the account gets a better price, but not very often. Hope this helps.
grendle81@reddit
I've never bought anything from RockAuto but don't they charge shipping on every order and doesn't that bring the cost up to about average online prices?
Bobo_Baggins03x@reddit (OP)
If you read my post you’ll see that, shipping included, I saved 40% on my order from RockAuto
grendle81@reddit
I've never seen prices that low on RockAuto including shipping. Everything I ever looked up on there was cheaper but not that much cheaper. Is it depends on what kind of vehicle you're shopping for.
Bobo_Baggins03x@reddit (OP)
I live in Canada if that matters
Keepin-It-Positive@reddit
Your local auto parts store has 50 different prices for a part. You get level a 49 price. Meaning fk-all for a discount. A local garage fixing your car, ordering parts gets the part for. Level 10 price. Then they charge you the level 49 price. This is a big part of how they make a profit. Rock auto charges you the level 5 price. No f-ing around. No games. Straight up awesome pricing.
Impressive-Tutor-482@reddit
I ran a small shop where customers could get parts cheaper through the online app than I could presenting as a shop.
The entire situation is fucked.
Secret-Ad-7909@reddit
I’m okay with the guys that charge what I would have paid anyway. I can’t stand the places that mark a part up to 3x what I could get it myself for. And then bitch and moan if you want to bring your own parts.
BeyondGood6293@reddit
You’re welcome to open your own shop and charge whatever you like. You can also buy/rent the land, pay taxes, hire emps, and be the last one to get paid after all your labor, vendors, bills, etc… let me know how it works out for you
Snakebiteloo@reddit
Got quoted 2600$ for a brake job. Got OEM parts for less than 400$ and did it myself in less than an hour. Over 2k in mark up and 2 hours labour is fucking nuts.
ihavenoidea81@reddit
Lots of people forget that there is a good chunk of the population that has “just get my car fixed” money and DGAF how much it costs. Some are smarter and take it to their local shop that they trust and say “fix it” some live by the “I must take my car to the dealer for everything” and they pay the price for it but they don’t care if BMW is charging them $187 for a set of wipers. Car had bad wipers, drop car off, car has good wipers. Done.
I bought a E90 BMW 10 years ago, my local German mechanic (really good dude) charged me about $500 for just the rear brakes so I said fuck that and that’s how I started working on cars. Bought $500 worth of tools over the year and I’ve probably saved my family tens of thousands of dollars just fixing shit myself
brmach1@reddit
Similar story here - took my Audi to the dealer - they quoted me a price for spark plugs, and then attempted to charge me an additional 200 on top of what was quoted.
They also were adamant that my brakes needed replaced at a cost of 2k even though the pad sensors had yet to even activate…that day I was like…I need to do this myself. I buy all of my parts for my Audi and bmw from foco euro, but I’ve easily saved 10k - and it’s gratifying to work on your own stuff…
ihavenoidea81@reddit
FCP is awesome. I buy all my stuff from there as well.
Whiskeypants17@reddit
Yep. I heard folks complain of $800 brake jobs for one of my new cars. It was $60 in pads and $150 in rotors. Had to pull the wheels off twice though because I forgot the two $7 pad sensors. Still worth it to save 4x. 7x parts cost is a little steep but maybe they do your taxes and give your wife a massage while they are in there.
ILUVSMGS18@reddit
I did all 4 of mine with upgraded pads/rotors for my '19 Mazda3 for less than $400 total. Between that and my $800 wheel and tire combo I got from a friend, it's really made it drive even better (now I just need to upgrade the sway bars somewhat to eliminate some of the body roll and it should be all set).
hx87@reddit
Marking up part prices doesnt make sense to me. If you need more revenue why not just charge more for labor?
adoomee@reddit
If someone who doesn’t know much about how much things should cost sees a cheap part price and a super expensive labor price, they will most likely end up going to another shop. If they see a high part price and a cheaper labor price, they might end up thinking they’re getting a good deal and won’t look for another shop.
Snowwpea3@reddit
Not being allowed to bring your own parts isn’t about the money. I’m sure it helps, but the main point is not wasting the time of the tech. I don’t wanna do my inspection get your wheels off, air hammer on your rotors for 20 minutes and find you have the wrong brake parts, I don’t get paid for that time.
Secret-Ad-7909@reddit
The SAs I worked with were just as likely to get the wrong stuff, and then play dumb about it.
drive-through@reddit
One of the first shops I worked for years ago had a computer system that would intake the cost of the part and spit out the most ridiculous prices by default. I know that a lot of other locations ran with that default pricing and that never sat well with me.
Anonymoushipopotomus@reddit
Running a brick and mortar repair shop is very very expensive. Very expensive. It’s one of the most dangerous jobs, you are driving someone’s 30-200k investment on public roads, and on top of it all, if you fuck up something like putting a wheel on, you can kill someone. I think you’d probably shit a brick if you knew what my garage keepers, umbrella, and workman’s comp insurance bills are like. Think of how much it costs to pay 3-4 competent techs per hour. Think of the tools and computers needed…
Razzman70@reddit
One of the biggest complaints I see from other techs at the dealership I work at is the markup. A $20-30 hood gas strut from Autozone gets marked up to $300 when we quote it up. It makes me want to slip a note in the customers car saying "Yo I'lll do it for $50"
firm_hand-shakes@reddit
Yeah I went off on a guy wanting to change plugs and coil packs on a Mazda 3 for $1500. It was one of those college town fancy shops and my sister broke down. I drove 2 hours and changed them in the parking lot for about $200 including gas and food that day.
hwystitch@reddit
Yea I had a buddy who worked at the local parts store and I got the friends and family price when he was working. Amazed at the mark up on auto parts. I mostly use rock auto and amazon now since he doesn't work there anymore. he was the owners kid and they sold the business.
kyuubixchidori@reddit
was coming here to comment- my commercial autozone account puts parts within a few dollars of what rockauto charges for the identical part.
Honest_Milk1925@reddit
This is a lot of it. I worked for a multi billion dollar infrastructure construction company here in California and we paid like 40% of the list price for anything at Napa. The Napa guys were cool and would us regulars the same discount on personal stuff
dracotrapnet@reddit
My brother mentioned he has at least a 45% markup on most parts. The trouble is he's on hook for the labor if there is any warranty problem. Most manufacturers won't cover labor if their part is bad, some do. If a job comes back for a redo, he may be eating labor.
Keepin-It-Positive@reddit
I can appreciate that. I get it. I do all my own auto repairs and maintenance. Rock auto is major supplier for my tool chest magnets!
smitleyjd@reddit
Working at a shop sometimes we get stuff for less than half retail price from napadvanceautozo'reillys and they're still making money on it! Ridiculous. And the same brand part is still cheaper on rockauto.
ducationalfall@reddit
Hey I’ve got 5% discount coupon once a while.
Impressive-Tutor-482@reddit
Because half of their OEM parts are fake or blem, specifically the electronic ones.
_old_relic_@reddit
I'd love to spend my money locally but I just can't voluntarily rip myself off so hard. Radiator for my Impreza, locally $330-$405 for brands I've never heard of. Rockauto had a Koyo for $120, it shipped in 4 days.
Professional-Bug2051@reddit
Try Partsavatar in Canada. I've used it numerous times when they actually beat Rockauto. Usually when there's significant weight to the parts and the shipping costs from Rock ends up negating any savings.
Brokewrench22@reddit
Most of their packages are shipped by volume not weight. So shipping isn't as high as you might think.
Also, It's not that their prices are so low, it's that the prices that they want locally are astronomically high.
Try changing your location on the chain store website to outside California and see how much prices go down.
brisket_curd_daddy@reddit
Here's my gripe with RockAuto. I live 5 minutes from the warehouse and it still takes two days to ship.
not_a_gay_stereotype@reddit
I bet it's because they can't instantly pick the part. There's probably such a backlog between the order coming in, showing up on a pick order, somebody collecting the parts and putting them in a big bin to be sorted and boxed, then a courier has to pick it up. That courier probably has a 1 day lag time
BauserDominates@reddit
I used to work at a Ford dealership, and I could buy Motorcraft pads and rotors cheaper on Rock Auto than I could at the dealership with my discount.
not_a_gay_stereotype@reddit
That's crazy. I remember dodge quoted me 800 dollars for a part that I found for less than 200 shipped to my door on rockauto and it was a Mopar branded part lmfao
gmredand@reddit
Aside from others stating that there are no retail locations (just warehouses) of RockAuto, you are paying for inconvenience of waiting for the part to arrive. For some people, time lost not having the car working is also money lost. This is true mostly for cars/trucks that need the parts now due to having a business. For others, it is their only mode of transport. I sometimes buy at RockAuto for things that my local auto parts store do no have or if the price difference is really that significant. If the part at the local auto parts store has a lifetime warranty, i would gladly pay for it even if RA has the same lifetime warranty (most dont). Your brake calipers at the local parts store have lifetime warranty, at least here in the US Autozone and O'Reilly. Even their pads have lifetime warranty. Only the rotors are 1- or 3-year warranty. If you will be keeping the car for a long time, buying at the local auto parts store is worth it. You want to claim warranty for the rack and pinion? Sure thing. Suspension parts like shocks, ball joints? Knock yourself out. Lifetime warranty lectrical parts (O'Reilly)? Shut up and take my money!
not_a_gay_stereotype@reddit
I think they do have warehouses all over the place but I think they also use drop shipping as well because I got a part the next day and we have a large Mopar parts depot nearby
Miliean@reddit
I know this is somewhat hard to grasp the magnatude of things here but the reality is that it's because your local NAPPA has to pay for the shelf AND the shipping where's rock auto only pays for shipping.
If you think about it, NAPA has to ship those parts to the local store and rockauto ships them to you. While there's some efficiencies in shipping from a warehouse to a retail store, it really depends on how large they can make the shipments in order to get those efficiencies and that means letting the store stock get low. It's cheaper to ship a pallet than to ship a box, but then you'd need a pallet worth of stock run down.
NAPA makes most of it's business from selling to auto repair shops and part of that business is always having the part in stock. The repair shop can't wait for shipping, the car is in the shop now and needs to be given back to the customer and that means that the parts need to be in stock at NAPA so that they can be delivered and installed (often same day). That's how NAPA makes it's money, it's the fact that they are in stock right now.
But that means that NAPA has to have this large retail store/warehouse space in every podunk little town. And they need your break caliper but also calipers for almost every make and model that exists. It's really just A LOT of shelf space for different parts. Then there's the employees to keep things properly organized and whatnot.
As opposed to RockAuto who only needs 1 very large warehouse. Parts are able to be stocked in bulk and shipped to customers location as needed.
So it all really comes down to the costs of maintaining the little store/warehouse that NAPA has. It's expensive and the lower the sales volume of that location, the more expensive it is in a per part basis. And NAPA has to keep things "in stock" of the repair places won't buy from them because the customers are demanding a quick turn around.
not_a_gay_stereotype@reddit
I think rockauto also uses local warehouses sometimes because I ordered a part once and it showed up literally the next day and I live in central Alberta. There's a big Mopar parts depot in red deer and I think that's where it came from
Relative-Space4269@reddit
Rock auto is good. But price check Amazon and other places too. I find that sometimes I can get the part cheaper especially on Amazon prime.. it mostly comes down to shipping
ImReallyFuckingHigh@reddit
I don’t really like taking my chances with Amazon and their counterfeit reputation
not_a_gay_stereotype@reddit
Not to say they don't have cheap Chinese parts on rock auto but yeah amazon is pretty bad. Some of the RA brands are very unknown and theres no reviews for them either. For example some of their reman turbos from some of the unknown companies, I always wonder how they hold up.
immalittlepiggy@reddit
I've also had terrible experiences with getting the right part from Amazon. Most recently I ordered an oil dipstick for a 1.8T VW. I don't know what engine the one I got was for, but I know for sure that the dipstick for that engine isn't nearly 3 feet long.
Relative-Space4269@reddit
They have a pretty robust customer satisfaction policy. I've never had an issue
osorojo_@reddit
would rather not have to get the part out of my car to return
Silvatungdevil@reddit
I once got a fake timing set from Amazon that bent the valves in the cylinder head of what I was working on. It was in a fake copy of the manufacturer's box too. Amazon can fuck off when it comes to auto parts.
Relative-Space4269@reddit
Bullshit. You must be a rock auto shill or something
Silvatungdevil@reddit
Says the Amazon shill.
Relative-Space4269@reddit
I like rock auto a lot and have ordered a ton from them. Amazon isn't always the best becuase that prime thing is expensive. That costs $150 nowadays. You really gotta figure that into your spending to see if it's worth it.. I actually canceled my prime because the shits too expensive.
All that being said. I am in support of ordering the cheapest auto parts possible from wherever.
abductee92@reddit
If I'm trying to finish a critical car repair ASAP, getting the wrong part in from amazon and having to wait on a replacement sounds horrible.
Relative-Space4269@reddit
If it did happen it would be your fault
abductee92@reddit
Not if I'm ordering based on the part number that I previously confirmed was correct. The issue is Amazon fulfillment pulls from a pile of inventory that comes from multiple sources. You could be getting the wrong part because of someone else's mistake up the line, or someone's fraudulent return. How you jump straight to that I have no idea.
KEVLAR60442@reddit
That's bullshit. I ordered a set of R1 Concepts Geo-Carbon slotted rotors for my Veloster, cross checked the size, model, and compound between both Amazon's listing AND the manufacturer's website, verified that the Amazon listing was the same listing that the manufacturer website linked to, and Amazon still sent me a set of blank e-Line Corvette rotors.
Relative-Space4269@reddit
You should have tried jegs, or ebay. Whoevers cheapest.
KEVLAR60442@reddit
So you went from advocating for Amazon to saying it's my fault for ordering from Amazon. Pick a lane.
For what it's worth, I picked Amazon because I was originally supposed to get my rotors next day. That's still the one aspect where Amazon is good.
ImReallyFuckingHigh@reddit
That is true that their customer service is miles better than RAs, I would just rather not deal with a return in general
_TheNorseman_@reddit
Especially considering a counterfeit part on a car could lead to catastrophic results. I don’t care how good your return policies are if you sold me a counterfeit oil filter that dissolved within 1,000 miles and destroyed my engine.
TineJaus@reddit
Yeah I won't buy filters and other common cheap parts online because of the counterfeit issues either. Rockauto has been good to me though.
KEVLAR60442@reddit
It's still a huge hassle when I'm trying to do a full brake job, and now I have to return a 90 lb set of Corvette disks, order a new set of disks for my Veloster N, and then be 1400 dollars in the hole instead of 700 dollars because Amazon won't refund me until the previous set of disks shows back up in their warehouse.
vinogradov@reddit
yeah, I gave up on parts on Amazon after getting a few faulty/fake parts.
sbMT@reddit
I'm more worried about counterfeit parts from Amazon than I am from Rock Auto. I know Amazon will make it right, but if I'm eagerly waiting for parts to put a vehicle back together, I don't want to waste my time with that. I've had good luck the handful of times I've ordered parts from Amazon, but I generally prefer Rock Auto when the prices are in the same ballpark.
h3xm0nk3y@reddit
RA’s shipping is pretty exorbitant. I can almost always find a part elsewhere with either faster or cheaper shipping. Even when they have “warehouse clearout” prices on things, any savings gets eaten by the shipping costs.
Bobo_Baggins03x@reddit (OP)
Cheaper, but are they reputable brands? That’s a key part of my obsession with RA. I get OEM products, not cheap Chinese knockoffs
RetreadRoadRocket@reddit
Most of it comes from the same actual suppliers and is just packaged in branded boxes.
I worked for a time as an inspector at an OEM supplier, the same parts we shipped like 10 skids a week to the factory in packed in case quantities were also taken out of cases and packaged in individual packaging as Dana, Sealed Power, Triton, QAP, and many other brands.
RuneScape-FTW@reddit
Amazon was goto for parts for a long time. Cheaper parts. Same quality. Fast shipping. And usually have stuff that store doesn't have .

I always cross check Amazon. You cannot beat free 1-2 day shipping for the same parts. I’d say it’s about 50/50 on if it’s cheaper. I do have a fridge full of magnets from rock auto though. It’s like adult Pokémon cards. Anyone wanna trade Rod’s 71 Chevelle for Mike’s 85 square body?
Dumb-ox73@reddit
Last week I bought a window regulator off Amazon because it was supposed to be two day shipping and I didn’t want my window hanging open if it rained. Paid $2 more than the exact same part on Rockauto would have cost with shipping. Amazon ended up shipping with USPS who screwed it up, put my package on the wrong truck, and it didn’t show up 6 days and two rain showers later. Then I had to go to the post office to get it because my lazy mail carrier can’t be bothered to take her lazy self up my driveway and just sticks a delivery notification in the mailbox saying “no secure location” even when my whole family was home.
I fucking hate the USPS. They are the poster child for government incompetence. A lot of my family were postal workers, including my grandpa who was a postmaster, and I know how that system works.

blahyawnblah@reddit
I have never seen a part cheaper on Amazon. But sometimes shipping is expensive from Rock Auto and Amazon ends up being less.
warpigz@reddit
Basically this - if I'm getting 2 or 4 rotors and pads then Rock Auto will surely be cheaper with the combined shipping, but for one random part it might be better to get it on Amazon with free shipping.
Relative-Space4269@reddit
Yes maybe the parts would be similar. I bought a cheap as possible starter off Amazon once. Hey it's mostly all the same chinese stuff anyway but it still meets oem spec. I haven't had an issue with the starter since. I paid $80 for it with prime shipping which ended up being cheaper than rock auto.
ConBroMitch2247@reddit
Idk man. Amazon is rife with fake/used/b-stock parts. Especially when “sold and shipped by Amazon”. Google “Amazon commingled inventory” and you’ll see why.
Never again after I had half of my car torn apart to find out some dickhead returned their used (read: broken) AOS and Amazon turned around and sold it to me as “new”.
Yeah Amazon replaced it without question, but it was 2 days with my car in pieces.
Secret-Ad-7909@reddit
I always cross shop when I can, even checking parts stores and dealership. When I did my whole front suspension I ended up with some stuff coming from both RA and Amazon.
MagazineNo2198@reddit
Amazon IS often cheaper, but their customer service is godawful. Good luck even identifying if the part is correct for your vehicle...and they aren't as liberal on returns as they used to be.
Also, while Amazon does buy genuine parts from many manufacturers, they also sell parts from 3rd Parties, and those parts are co-mingled in the Amazon warehouses, so you have a chance of getting counterfeit/knockoff parts that are significantly lower quality than they should be.
There are a lot of things I would buy on Amazon, car parts ain't one of them.
runtimemess@reddit
Is that $360 after USD->CAD? because $360 USD is almost $500 CAD
Autobahn97@reddit
The people you buy from locally need make money off keeping inventory locally is my guess and often one needs parts urgently to get back on the road so the cost becomes less relevant. In USA I have used Tasca Parts for my Fords when i need OEM but have used Rock Auto as well. I have also used Amazon (Prime) for aftermarket parts like upgraded rotors/pads for my truck. For German/Euro cars I recently learned about FCP Euro that also happens to be not too far away from me but ships from both USA coasts. Basically all part I need I try to buy online now to save since everything has gotten so expensive.
mmaalex@reddit
It's just an aggregator for multiple autoparts distribution warehouses. They take a slim margin for creating the software and processing payments/orders to the individual warehouses. I doubt they own the warehouses.
Retail like your local auto parts store has high overhead, having brake pads for most common cars is expensive, now multiply that by every possible part they stock. Lots of stuff sits on the shelves at your local store for years.
tapedficus@reddit
Yeah, I used rockauto for a while, but damn is the shipping expensive. Now I buy exclusively from autoshack. Parts ship from Canada and it's cheap as hell.
42SpanishInquisition@reddit
RockAuto is often cheaper including shipping than local parts in Australia!
trdpanda101410@reddit
Depends on where you live. Anytime I've ordered rockauto I've paid shipping and after shipping I'm ussually paying $40 less then the parts store at most while the warranty is on me and rockauto via shipping vs walking across the street. I live in a relatively cheap place to live tho.
Rockauto has less expenses then normal retailers. Retailers order parts to a warehouse, split it out to stores, and sell to you. Rockauto doesn't ship to stores. They ship to you so they don't have the expense of an entire storefront or parts sitting on shelves taking up space.
Hell, sometimes they simply drop ship... meaning they order it thru their account but label you the drop off. This way they save money from having it shipped to a warehouse then out to you or even the labor involved with distributing. They simply order it from their supplier but directly ship it to you if it's cheaper that way. And yes... sometimes it's cheaper for them to order it, receive it, and reship it. Prices get cheaper for more parts you order from a factory on the same road. So sometimes they'll see 10 orders that can be assembled at the same factory for a discount becuase its not 1 but 10, shipped to them, then distributed out to save a dollar or two.
There's a few ways to keep prices down. Dropship, order in massive bulk, don't have actual storefronts if internet works for you, and make your site as user friendly to gain as much customers as possible.
The last point I put there is because at my job I deal with multiple suppliers and some of their apps/sites are so much like a maze it's easier for me to order thru a different supplier then deal with the headache. Rockauto has the resources and time to aquire that best deal.
_CJ@reddit
RockAuto is great until you have a problem. There is no way to connect to an actual human being. I bought Westin running boards through them. I entered all of the info about my vehicle and everything. They arrived with one of the end caps damaged. I went through the process of re-entering my vehicle info and requesting just the replacement part, not a return, and they denied it. It said the part I ordered wasn’t compatible with my vehicle. I literally ordered through them using my vehicle info!! After that robotic decision is made, it’s over. There is no possibility of talking to an actual human being to appeal or anything. You can’t retry. I contacted Westin directly and they said this isn’t the first time this has happened. They sent me a set of both end caps for nothing.
SmallusMcPeen@reddit
The parts stores, or at least one in particuar anyway, markup is like 185%. I used to work at one and I do side work for extra money (not gonna be rolling in luxury at $13.50/ an hour as a manager.) I happen to know a guy who works at WorldPac so he can buy parts at WorldPac's cost. I had to do one of those vacuum valve shits for an old S Class with the soft touch doors one time and I happened to get curious at work the next day and looked up what it would cost a customer for those parts from Bosch and did the math. At least that was for that one part about a year and a half ago. Knowing what that part was at both cost and at whole sale from prior job as a mechanic (I got hurt and can't extend my dominant arm anymore) I can tell you places like WorldPac and Rock Auto mark up OES parts about 30% They are on the Costco/Sam's Club method of tiny profit margins but a lot of sales model evidently
bubbasparks33@reddit

I’m in Canada and rockauto is not always cheaper. You have to watch carefully, they’ll try to screw you by shipping from different warehouses when they say they’re at the same warehouse. After shipping costs, I can often get parts cheaper from Canadian stores and websites.
_jaydawg_5525@reddit
No brick and mortar stores.

"OEM" parts. The amount of knock off parts I've got in "factory" boxes would blow your mind.

Yeah i can get four bulbs for the price of two on headlights. Only good thing about the im store is the same day, next day and exchange policies. Which is all great. But damn those prices
LengthinessReady7072@reddit
I have an account I use at Lordco in Victoria. And I have a pretty significant discount. Yet it is still cheaper to buy from RA and pay the shipping.
Maplelongjohn@reddit
I can't shop there again.
Shitty parts that fail quickly, which sure they will replace.
Eventually.
After you remove it and ship it back. And wait for them to approve.
Who doesn't have a week and half minimum for their vehicle to be down?
Oh. Well then you can buy it again, wait for them to ship again, install it and ship back the broken part, and wait for approval and hopefully get a refund some day
I'd rather deal with my FLAPS and pay a bit more.
JimboBob@reddit
I bought a set of 4 brake rotors and pads for my mini van off Amazon for $250. What arrived was absolutely first rate. Better than Cdn Tire or NAPA for a fraction of the price. Just goes to show you the mark up of many items and if you shop around you can find good deals.
Individual-Channel65@reddit
I'm so fucking glad I live in a world with RockAuto. I really hope it doesn't change its business model.
brmach1@reddit
I took a car in to Les Schwab recently to get a quote for strut replacement. The shock assembly they planned to use would have come from rock auto (the worker showed me the part #). It was $66 - on the Les Schwab quote they charged me 270 each… I did it myself and was able to put in a much nicer strut for much less money..
Superb_Monk_9051@reddit
They don’t warehouse anything. Everything is drop shipped from a variety of distributors where they are sourcing with deep discounts. They are just pushing paper, hence the low overhead.
vmsucks@reddit
Rarely is rock auto cheaper than eBay or Amazon once rockauto adds the insane shipping prices. A brick and mortar store will be more expensive than online, napa is usually 20 to 50 percent more in price then all the other big box stores in US.
FamousSuccess@reddit
Ton of misinformation in here. Rockauto has no physical locations outside of a floor of an office building. They have maybe 30 employees in total. What people perceive as a distribution network is actually a larger partnerships with non big 3 retail parts companies. These companies have smaller footprints from a retail perspective, aka stores, than say Oreilly’s. But they have a large robust distribution network that ships not only their stores stock, but direct to you all via e commerce outlets. So you get a full blown feeling of it being a real company with actual product and locations
At the end of the day these distributors are buying the product cheaply from manufacturers, selling it on rock/ebay, and that’s where you benefit.
It’s referred to as the law of touches. They less people that touch it the less money they have in it. The more money you save
Rocks biggest issue is Amazon though. Their distribution network is world class. They’re working on hiring a bunch of people from the business end of automotive parts and fixing the website/lookup and stocking things appropriately. Before long it’ll all be rock auto pricing with one day prime free shipping.

choochbacca@reddit
Because the cheap Rock auto parts are garbage. If you price it out with their mid range to higher end parts, it costs close to the same
Beatsbythebong@reddit
The how is they don't have store front overhead, also they don't spend extra money on rebranding parts. Since their overhead is low, they can undercut any irl box store.
McGannahanSkjellyfet@reddit
Because RockAuto loves you, supports you, and just wants you to be happy.
dirtjumperdh@reddit
Zero customer service. That's how. They send you the wrong part? Sorry your effed. Even if it's their fault, they try to charge you for shipping back and again for the replacement item. Usually paying to ship the item 3 times makes the return not worth it.
Gotta call to ask a question? Online chat? Nope. And don't expect and email reply within 3 days.🤣
Also, if you put in a different shipping address from billing address. And then select the billing address later. They have a glitch that will then change the shipping address to the billing address accidentally.
If you don't notice this and submit the order. As soon as you hit that submit button you're effed.
I had to just contact my bank and dispute the charge.
ConclusionDull2496@reddit
Being in Wisconsin, they don't have to pay all those hefty Canadian taxes I guess. RockAuto has always been great.
JimmyTwoFactor@reddit
Rock auto, sometimes autoshack and sometimes eBay.
Vehicle problem?
Fire the parts cannon again!
GlacierGuy38@reddit
It's simple. They are strictly a drop-ship warehouse, they have no brick & mortar stores (physical locations) to staff, heat, and maintain.
Your local stores have a warehouse just like RockAuto, but then the prices go up because you're parking in their lot, talking to the people at the counter, the lights are on etc. RockAuto does away with all that. Just be mindful that RockAuto has like no customer service be phone (again, to keep costs down) so returns and other queries can be tough. Always be sure of what you're ordering.
Nacho_Tools@reddit
They are a wholesale distributor, napa is a retail distributor. In other qords you are buying from the same source as Napa, they just have to mark it up to make profit. I used to work in Automotive wholesale parts and my cost was the sa.e as rock auto.
candidcapturepro@reddit

badtux99@reddit
Make sure you are comparing like to like. The typical NAPA part is equal in quality to OEM parts. That is not true of most other aftermarket parts.
Swamp_Donkey_7@reddit
A lot of their stuff is warehouse closeouts and such. Their inventory is always changing depending on sources. You can go back to the same car 6 mos later and see an entirely different list of available O2 sensors for example.
Hot_Block_9675@reddit
...and that's where you can find extreme bargains. You can even sign up for this with an RSS feed on their site. I like paying $1.95 for a windshield wiper versus $12.95.

Immediate-Rub3807@reddit
Yeah man I don’t know how they do it, hell you can even cross reference a part you have to see if it fits. Rock Auto started as a company that went around buying out parts wholesaler warehouses and dealer NOS. So if you were a parts wholesaler and had a lot of older/obsolete parts still carrying in your inventory for decades, Rock Auto would buy it for a discount and you would have it off your books. Same with dealers that had OEM parts older than what the manufacturer would buy back. Rock Auto would buy them. That's why Rock Auto is great for old cars.
twizted_whisperz@reddit
Years ago I needed plugs wires and a cap for my car, priced it on rock auto and the shipping was 35 bucks because they came from there different warehouses. I said "screw that" and looked it up locally. It was twice what rock auto wanted including the shipping, I the gladly paid the $35 shipping.

Wassup4836@reddit
It’s all online, they don’t have brick and mortar stores all over the country. They just source the parts from the manufacturer that’s listed on their site, toss them in a box and send them to you.

I find myself buying local more often. The local stores usually have 15 to 20% off if you order online, and I prefer the easy return of the local stores compared to rock auto.
Putrid-Bird4936@reddit
Brick and Mortar auto parts store prices have gone into the stratosphere. They used to be around 20% more expensive than online. Now it's more like double or triple. I would say their days are numbered, but they are always full of customers, so IDK. People need parts fast to get to work on Monday.
Whitetrash_messiah@reddit
Honestly rock auto has the Amazon business format mixed with a little Walmart.
No brick and mortar stores so everything is online like Amazon. So no franchise fees/taxes to put on the consumer. For the Walmart side they order in bulk or cut out the middle man ( some oem parts are third party so they buy directly from plants instead of the dealers )
Mountain_Client1710@reddit
Storefronts can’t financially compete with online. Operating costs are too expensive and you’ll never get the sales volume that online does. You’re really just paying extra for the convenience.
ValBGood@reddit
My wife used to work for an aftermarket manufacturer that also imported auto parts. She could order parts directly from their warehouses at cost. The cost to us was slightly more than the UPS shipping charge. A typical brake job included new calibers, brake pads, hoses, calipers, rotors and occasionally the master cylinder and abs module. Interestingly, all the shipping boxes were marked NO ASBESTOS
ramjam31@reddit
I’ll shop local for “in a pinch” items and for stuff for my work where speed is key. Otherwise I’ll order rock auto. I don’t trust amazon for anything critical anymore
SalineroNorCal831@reddit
And mind you Rock Auto does bone us on the shipping , I’ve had all my items coming out of one warehouse added another item and suddenly everything is shipping out of three different locations and even then still cheaper than NAPA and that’s with my homie discount

Be vigilant, oem frequently means "oem compatible." I have bought recently cam phasers head bolts head gaskets etc and I can tell you with certainty the quality of the parts from rock auto is just never as good as dealership parts. You get what you pay for. Also rockauto costs a ton to ship in any reasonable time frame.
Hot_Block_9675@reddit

Ok_Distribution_5797@reddit
Does RA sell any OEM Parts for Honda ?
Hot_Block_9675@reddit
Indeed, but you need to know who the manufacturer was. You'll find lots of quality Japanese parts there, but not for every need.
I bought Continental replacement shocks from them for my Mercedes. The exact same part as OEM but without the star logo. One fourth the cost of my friendly local larcenous dealer.
wezelboy@reddit
Their returns policy is pretty shitty.
Hot_Block_9675@reddit
I've bought literally a hundred parts from RA over the past 10 years. It's somewhat difficult to fill out the parts return, and it takes a while to get credited, but I've never been refused. When I use their pre-paid return label (deducted from your refund) it's almost always at cost. Saves a lot of hassle filling out a separate shipping label and a higher price.
TheR1ckster@reddit
They trim every single thing they can.
It's great if you get the right part and any issues fall into the flow chart/tree system for returns. But if not you might end up on the hook to pay to ship it back.
There is no way to get ahold of customer service. They don't have it. They had a catalog issue for a caliper I needed and even though I found someone's work email that helped me out, I still ended up having to pay to just return it because they weren't fixing the issue and I kept getting the same wrong part.
They had the part numbers switched for right and left calipers on my car. So I kept getting a left caliper when I needed a right, and there was no way to return and buy the other without paying shipping. The exchange was free, but then I got another wrong caliper.
I even verified the part numbers on the manufacturers catalog so the error was obvious.
CKXI1@reddit
Rockauto used to be amazing when they grouped shipping together. Now the shipping charges aren't worth it, atleast for me.
jwronk@reddit
I’ve been using rock auto for years and have always been super happy with them. My last order (rear pads and rotors for my truck) came through with two different rotors. I was super annoyed but already had everything ripped apart and was on a time crunch. I believe they ran out of the rotors I had ordered and just sent the next best one they had. Even put a sticker with the part number I ordered over the original part number on the box. Weird but whatever. Both were quality parts and intended for my vehicle just different , one was listed as a “premium rotor” on their site and the other was “extreme duty rotor”. Maybe they’re all the same and the levels are just marketing lol.

I cross shop RA with the rest of the internet and almost every time I end up with a RA box at my door a couple days later.
I just did front struts on my Escape (bent one on a monster pothole) and the tire shop wanted $1750. I did them myself from RA, using the exact same strut assemblies, for $230 shipped plus some of my time. Less than they were charging for just one strut, to do both. Granted I have everything I need to do the job, but holy balls.
I've found it cheaper to own an extra car and fix everything myself rather than taking it in. Extra car removes the "I need this NOW" effect and lets me work on things as I have time, and do all the "while you're in theres."
bigtitays@reddit

Golf-Guns@reddit
It's just how the pricing model ends up working, which is also why you can go to advanced and a lot of these places and get 20% off pretty much any day.
Their source of business isn't the price conscious consumer that has time to wait. It's mainly shops and DIYers that need it same day.
The corporate accounts are the same if not cheaper than Rock Auto.
Acrobatic_Hotel_3665@reddit

They have a business model better suited to selling a large number of specialty products than a brick and mortar business. If you'be heard of Amazon, they started by selling college textbooks. Same thing.
fluffioso@reddit
You're paying for convenience cuz it's there already hence why it's expensive. If you're willing to be patient then yes it comes out cheaper via rockauto kinda like a gas station but with auto parts
CamOfGallifrey@reddit
So retailers will sell to shops, but also ship out rock auto to do volume. What would be a smaller operation can do more volume, and enjoy the profits from buying in bulk from vendors and gaining higher profit margins on the sale to repair shops.
cm2460@reddit
They make a deal with a warehouse that either is owned by a large retailer, like Napa, or an independent one that supplies small chains
“We will take care of all customer service and sales and guarantee you X volume if you give us Y discount”
Then because they have no physical location overhead they can make 5% on every sale and still make a bunch of money
Ever punch in a part number for say an MSD distributor on eBay and there are 100s of ads with the same pic and price?
Those are people who’s entire business is their laptop and they are drop shipping from Motorstate or summit/jegs wholesale arms. No building, no overhead just a ton of volume to make up for low margin
Same idea as rock auto
OxycontinEyedJoe@reddit
My guess is just lower overhead and Economies of scale. They don't have any brick and motor stores, but still have the volume to mass order parts. I recently redid my entire ac system. It was going to be $1500 in parts at the parts store and that includes a reman compressor. Rock auto sent everything to the house for $600 with a brand new compressor.
Various-Ducks@reddit
The real question is how do Canadian companies get away with charging so much.
It's cheaper to ship from the US to Canada than within Canada in many cases.
freshly_ella@reddit
They're going for mass sales over profit margin per item. A lot of it is almost drop shipping. They're likely getting a decent discount from suppliers by purchasing so much. Basically they are smart and know it's better to make a million $ off a million sales than 750,000 off a half million sales. And they've automated the process enough to keep labor and costs down.
bicyclewhoa17@reddit
Im just here to upvote rockauto
KRed75@reddit
The brink and mortar stores jack up the prices. Expect to pay double for items that they know you need now and can't wait for it to ship. They also have high overhead so prices are generally going to be higher.
Rock Auto is just a company with a website. They do not stock parts. They drop ship from the auto parts warehouses around the country at near wholesale prices. They make their money in volume and have low overhead.
Walmart and Home Depot drop ship from the same warehouses that Rock Auto uses so I always check them when buying car parts. They don't have all the same parts that Rock Auto sells but I've gotten better deals from them because the shipping was free.
saidai88@reddit
Even with shipping rockauto is cheaper than what I can find locally. I do price comparisons. It takes 3-4 days for it arrive.
Keepin-It-Positive@reddit
When my local auto parts store wants to charge me a premium price, Rock Auto gets my order. When you maintain your vehicle properly, you plan your maintenance in advance. You can order your parts from Rock Auto. If you choose your ignore your vehicle, and need parts the same day that they broke, you’ll be paying a premium at your local parts store. Your brake pads and rotors didn’t wear out in one day. Pay attention and save mucho money.
cchelios5@reddit
They quit paying web development 25 years ago and it turns out the old way is easier to navigate and works better.
a3x@reddit
I can call up napa and get stuff delivered same day or next morning, in one of their own vehicles. And they pay people to stand at the counter and help you out. Rockauto you pay for shipping, and they make you pay multiple shipping charges if your parts come from separate warehouses. And you are sometimes on your own figuring out what part from their list of 40 of what seem like the same thing actually fits your application. They both have their pros and cons and I buy from both depending on the situation. But yeah, rockauto is a fuckton cheaper if you can wait for shipping and you know exactly what you need.
The_Burt@reddit
Huh, I have the opposite experience with Rockauto in Cali. I always check Rockauto, and the prices look great but than the shipping costs makes a purchase from them unreasonable and I pick parts up locally. Maybe you're closer to their warehouses than me.
Deepmagic81@reddit
Carrying cost of inventory and turn over rate. Rock Auto’s turn over is very high and Napa’s sits and sits.
AZDiver_96@reddit
Yeah idk how they do it. Pretty impressive. Probably cuz they get insane deals ordering in bulk or drop shipping maybe.
tj66616@reddit
Manage an auto parts store here. Company name doesn't matter in this case but I can give some insight here.
They have extremely small overhead costs. In a standard retail parts store you obviously have the cost of employee labor, the cost of the building rent, utilities, delivery vehicle fuel, lease payments, etc. Then there's the uncontrollable stuff from up above such as logistics cost for replenishment orders, marketing, customer satisfaction, hr, etc.
Your standard operating margin is roughly 40 percent. Now that sounds high, but it fluctuates so much depending on the product that it's hard to nail down. For example, I might make 40 percent on a caliper, but I can also make 500 percent on an air freshener. Air fresheners are obviously more retail friendly because it's an impulse purchase, it's low cost, and marketable. Then there's the logistics of fitting 100 air fresheners into a tote versus 4 calipers. If I sell 30 of those air fresheners I'll make more actual profit and dollars than selling 4 calipers and I still have another 70 air fresheners that will turn 10 to 1 to a caliper because they aren't vehicle specific.
Rock has none of the retail stuff, so they have no fast turning inventory. Almost everything they sell is vehicle specific. So they have warehouses, pickers, shipping contracts, purchase contracts, and your standard business stuff like hr and payroll. That's it. Very low operating costs comparatively.
Another aspect that as a parts store we have to tread everyday when someone asks us to price match rock is warranty. If you buy a caliper from me and it locks up, 95 percent of the time I can have another 1 same day. With rock your waiting. Their warranty process sucks and they have full say on whether or not they'll honor it. Parts stores expect stuff to come back, it's the nature of the business. That warranty cost is figured into the retail cost essentially. It's usually an aspect that most people don't consider until something happens.
Tldr; the business models are different. Parts stores cater to a much broader customer base but the costs are higher because of the convenience factor. Rock is essentially a wholesaler with a catalogue and really low operational cost.
BeBackBus@reddit
The markup on the regular stores is i sane from 150 to 200 percent SMH
Mysterious-Title-852@reddit
Check out PartsAvatar as well, they are Canadian and have free shipping. Their parts are usually more expensive than RockAuto, but the free shipping brings it to about the same and it gets to you faster.
Mailing back Cores for the core charge is a bit of a PITA, I've never bought a part that would have a core from Rock Auto so I don't know what that would be like.
CauliflowerTop2464@reddit
Seems like they don’t screen have inventory but rather still other stores inventory and have it all drop shipped. Their cost is low and they pass it on to you.
subtlestang@reddit
The large majority of Rock Auto parts are overstock returns, discontinued stock, or manufacturer overruns that Rock Auto purchases from other warehouses, parts wholesalers, and manufacturers wanting to get rid of stock that's not selling in profitable quantities.
Business model somewhat similiar to the TJ Max/Marshalls/Sierra enterprise, except they do it with clothing.....
diresua@reddit
They also can't support you like local auto parts stores. Some will actually offer to pay the labor to repair or replace a bad part of something happens. Thats good backup to have. Also, local can drop off same day. Which one has better quality?
SpaceFormal6599@reddit
The cars on Guam only run because RockAuto exists.
No_Phrase_7517@reddit
Majority of their stuff is from Parts Authority. They just get a bigger discount since they’re a bigger company.
WiseDirt@reddit
How? It's a lot easier when you don't have hundreds of brick & mortar retail locations and thousands of employees to pay. By taking all sales online and shipping from one central warehouse, they're able to cut down on a ton of overhead.
IOI-65536@reddit
I read through the comments and nobody has mentioned this. One of the biggest metrics that's tracked in retail is "inventory turns" which is how many times the average item in inventory is sold in a year. So if you stock 5 of an item and sell 10 per year your turn rate on that item is 2x. Auto parts retailers have notoriously bad inventory turns (usually under 2) and NAPA is the classic example in business schools of a retailer that's successful despite unbelievably bad inventory turns (iirc it's around 0.1x). NAPA's core business is not to get you brake pads so you can do a common brake job sometime in the next couple weeks. NAPA's core business is having that part you need to get your (or your customer's) car back up this afternoon so you can go to work tomorrow.
They do that by having a bunch of stock of crap they're selling less than once a year. My understanding is Rock Auto is a drop shipper (kind of contra my other comment), but not from parts suppliers to shops, not manufacturers. They can get it so cheap because their supplier only has stuff they're actually going to sell instead of shelves full of items spread across thousands of retail locations where maybe a dozen sell in a year but they have to have them in all locations to make sure this location has one if somebody asks for it.
HandH2@reddit
This is pretty much correct. I work for one of the DC's that ships RA's parts. We carry a crap ton of parts but we get rid of anything that doesn't sell over the course of a year. Everything we have is (ideally) rotating inventory and when it stops selling we get rid of it by either heavily discounting it or returning to the vendor. Our biggest selling brand is SKP (>$20M/month) and we still only use less than 20,000 sq. ft. on it all out of a 400,000 sq. ft. warehouse
Exciting-Current-778@reddit
I always forget to order from there .
glitchvdub@reddit
They keep their margins low and sell much higher quantities. They are paying for warehousing and warehouse automation.
Traditional parts stores are paying a ton in real estate leases, employees, warehousing, and transportation logistics.
Parts stores main clientele are not their retail customers, it is local shops that are buying a lot more parts. They will get somewhat of a discount and then they can mark their parts up to the parts store retail cost.
Rock auto sells to some shops as well however, since they don’t have an easy return policy or the ability to get parts within a few hours. Shops typically won’t use rock auto because of those things mentioned above, time is money for a shop. They will use local parts, stores or a company called WorldPac. They offer a much more business friendly approach.

There are very large parts distributors out there. Often many have a rock auto terminal. Think door dash. Rock auto doesn't really even buy crap until you buy it. Heck you pay for it and often they pay net 30,45 or 90 for it so they are sitting on a pile of cash basically on top of little to no rented out floorspace

corrugatedjuice@reddit
I mean, part for part yes their prices are a bit lower but not by a huge amount lol. I'm also i Canada shipping cost is hit or miss I find, usually for heavy items it's pretty damn expensive so I sometimes use a cross border pickup service. I find RockAuto is usually cheaper by maybe 10-20 bucks all it compared to just buying from a Canadian retailer but not always.
You do need to be careful with their checkout/shipping wizard. Sometimes it will do weird stuff and split shipments up depending on the order you add parts to your cart.
its_k1llsh0t@reddit
I know someone who used to work on the RA website. I stopped using it after he told me about it.

I ordered brake shoes and pads several years ago and it was a fraction of the cost of what Auto Zone wanted to charge me. And to boot they were Raybestos so they weren't exactly cheap parts.
ghunt81@reddit
I love me some rockauto, when I have a planned project I will order parts ahead of time. The only thing I don't like is trying to group together parts to save on additional shipping charges. But man they literally have almost every brand of many parts, from the cheaper Chinese crap to genuine Motorcraft. I swear they offer at least 20+ different brands of brake rotors that fit my F150.
Meatles--@reddit
Yea and the parts arent junk either. Most stuff you get from napa is going to be equivalent to the no name chinese garbage on rock for 3 bucks, but sold at double the price of the premium stuff on rock.
stupidis_stupidoes@reddit
They don’t sell OEM, just OE replacement. That’s why you get it cheap.
AceMaxAceMax@reddit
RockAuto has been significantly overpriced compared to Amazon or FCPEuro when accounting for shipping fees.
Neither Amazon or FCPEuro charge me shipping fees.
Dirk-Killington@reddit
I needed a master cylinder. Local parts house quoted $500 and two week turn around.
Rock auto had it to my door the next day for $300.
Oh by the way, this is on a god damned island in the Caribbean.
whiskey_formymen@reddit
your also getting a guaranteed part from rock auto. they don't have store front overhead
hektor10@reddit
This is a paid post I see
BogusIsMyName@reddit
They have no storefront. NAPA and other autoparts stores have storefronts AND warehouses with all the money that goes into maintaining each. Rockauto is just a warehouse so they dont need to mark up their prices very much in order to pay the bills. I love them to pieces for it too.
firstthrowaway9876@reddit
No ads, a website built on a spreadsheet (that's easy to add to), no actual stores, better trained employees, fewer employees, lower return rate, lower fraud rate, and probably a more educated costumer.
As a shop owner you really couldn't meet customer expectations using just rockauto when advance and them will drop off the cheapest part possible and just that part for no additional cost.
carguy82j@reddit
Just wait till they send you the wrong or defective heavy ass part.
PeanutButterViking@reddit
I live in Canada.
I needed a rear brake caliper bracket for my 2012 Volt. Chev dealer said that there were none in Canada and that it would take a couple weeks to bring one in from a warehouse in Tennessee. I ordered an AC Delco part from RockAuto, for 40% less than the dealer price, and I had it in two days.
glade_air_freshner@reddit
Very, very minimal overhead. They don't employ nearly as many people. And there isn't the "convenience tax" because, well, it's not convenient compared to the likes of O'Reillys.
That said, for planned maintenance and repairs, RockAuto has never once failed me. The only time I go to the brick and mortar stores is if I need a part NOW.
Losrobert0@reddit
The prices at NAPA store are total ripoff When i need something fast i go to my local carquest The price are around 15% higher compared to rock auto but still way cheaper than NAPA
tryingtobeopen@reddit
Because we live in Canada and pay a built-in "Bend Over Here It Comes Again" tax on EVERYTHING!

Because it's $95 shipping for an $80 part.
I'm from rural Canada as well, and I often find it's cheaper just to buy parts in-person because of that. Shipping is usually $85 - $280 for me, so I try to avoid RockAuto unless I'm buying a bunch of parts.
Bobo_Baggins03x@reddit (OP)
Where the hell do you live? My shipping for brake pads, rotors, a calliper, spark plugs and some brake lube came to $47. Also, I don’t care if it costs the same to ship it as it does for the parts, if it’s still cheaper, who cares?
JoshJLMG@reddit
Rural Saskatchewan (though, not super rural, only 30 minutes away from Saskatoon).
For my order of a brake drum ($28.16), two wheel bearings ($7.90 and $10.51) and two lift supports ($39.22) for a total of $85.79, my shipping was an extra $83.94.
You add taxes and by end the of it, instead of paying $85.79 for parts, I'm paying $188.41.
And then I still have to wait 3 - 4 weeks for it to arrive.
banshee3@reddit
Ok so last time I went to price something out was 2 headlights for an old Nissan. Cheapest option at napa was 160ea. RA was 75ea. Then you add the taxes and up-front shipping and that became 110ea. Then I noticed "ships from USA via ups". So I'm sure they'll tack on some bullshit brokerage or custom fees on top of all of the shipping charge. (I've avoided them[UPS] for like a decade now because of this garbo) this used to be a percentage of the value placed on the items so now I'm probably inching up to the 300$ range. Whereas with napa I walk in and get what I need and if it's wrong can bring it right back to them. I'll pay for that convenience if the cost is close enough. Let me know if big brown starts wanting to charge you their cut.
grod1227@reddit
Go find someone with a commercial account and the prices are the same as Rockauto without the shipping charge. (in Sask so parts are overpriced as well)
seanx50@reddit
They don't have thousands of stores with rent to pay, and employees to fill them. Just a big mostly automated warehouse.
PigSlam@reddit
They don't have the overhead of a location in every town to cover. They also don't employ many of your neighbors (besides maybe the guy making the delivery).
DaveCootchie@reddit
I worked in an auto parts store for 6 years. I took plenty of looks at manifests and orders. MOST stores have a minimum 150-200% markup on EVERYTHING. some products were sold a lower margins cause of volume but brake pads, brake rotors, and batteries were the most marked up parts sold. Overhead for paying employees, keeping the lights on, and shipping the parts to the store isn't cheap (like the convenience of same day or next day parts at a store) plus corporate greed isn't cheap either either. Also loss prevention (shoplifting and fake returns) costs are baked into that overhead as well. RA only staffs a few warehouses and buys wholesale at cost. You are on the hook for shipping and its already hard enough to return things there let alone run a scam... so their overhead is a lot lower. So they can sell at a lower price and still make the same amount as the big box stores.
Wolf_Ape@reddit
“Oem”is not always used to describe what you think it means. Oem style, oem fitment, and even companies or product lines deceptively named “oem” are all commonly sold as “oem parts”. It’s usually not a problem for the average commuter vehicle, or clunker someone wants to get running again for fun, but I had a shop try to replace my 4 slightly dinged sodium filled valves on a 500whp evoVIII rebuild with “oem” valves that looked completely different and were just basic iconel. He insisted they were oem, pointing to the order summary listing them as such, and refused to acknowledge the obvious differences. I paid for the cylinder honing and then took all the head parts they had ordered and installed out and stacked them on their front desk while he fetched all the parts that had been removed. They received no more of my business… 0 stars lol
user47-567_53-560@reddit
I'm also in rural Canada. The big thing is lead time. RA is a few weeks away at the earliest. Midwest distributors can get most things in a day to a week. If it's worth it to wait I'll use RA, otherwise I'm going local. Shipping also usually eats into the discount.
Bobo_Baggins03x@reddit (OP)
Even with shipping, it’s considerably cheaper than local options. I ordered this morning and most of my stuff is due next Tuesday (4 business days)

I was looking at ordering from Rock Auto. Just curious if the prices they list are in Canadian dollars, or USD? It doesn't really say anywhere one way or the other so don't wanna overspend if it's billed in USD.
Bobo_Baggins03x@reddit (OP)
I was confused because normally the prices were in CAD but when I ordered this time (it’s been a few months) everything was listed in USD until the invoice summary was emailed to me. Which is bullshit, but I’m still in money big time
birchy98@reddit
I'd imagine like most, you want to do your best to support local, but dang it's hard with companies like RockAuto around! Big companies like to say "we need to protect our bottom line", yeah, "so do I!". haha

I buy a shit box car every 3 or 4 years to drive to work and the last one I bought I discovered basically the entire front end was unsafe. I was apprehensive about spending much on a $600 car but I went on rock auto and got new hubs, new tie rods (and the inner and outer ends) new rotors and pads and new lower control arms for $160. I was blown away
Soithascometothistoo@reddit
I love it so much. They even have them broken down by category so you can have some confidence in the quality of the part. I usually just go for the daily driver
lurkingfrommiddleus@reddit
No magnets and multiple shipping charges when shipped from their warehouses? No more Rock Auto for me. Hello Amazon
Hot_Block_9675@reddit
RA is ALWAYS my first go to. But I'll also shop Amazon for the exact same part and they sometimes will beat them. Free shipping with Prime plays into this big time. The shocker is often Walmart. They've been stepping up their game a lot recently.
My biggest issue with ALL of them is lack of transparency exactly where the part was made.
This totally pisses me off and I'm not sure how they keep getting away with this. So many times the part will arrive saying "Made in China" while the name brand suggests it's EU sourced. Sneaky bastards. It almost ALWAYS goes back. So tired of dealing with their fraudulent stuff that ALWAYS breaks rapidly.
Heavy_Gap_5047@reddit
Horrible customer service and no overhead. They're just a drop ship outfit operated near completely by one family and their relatives. They don't inventory parts, it's just a website, everything is automated, you do the look up and if you ever need customer service or a return you're fucked.
AKADriver@reddit
I've done a couple of returns to RockAuto and it went fine. It's not as effortless as Amazon or bringing stuff back to a store, but in the end I put parts in box and got a refund.
NAPA's online parts lookup is way worse than RockAuto's. A lot of the time I go the other way, cross referencing parts and applications on RA and then buying them on Amazon (whose application guide is essentially useless) or locally.
Heavy_Gap_5047@reddit
They sent me the wrong part, their catalog was wrong. Because it took me more than 30 days to figure out the problem they refused to refund it.
nixiebunny@reddit
Except that rockauto has a really amazing database that we all get access to.
Bobo_Baggins03x@reddit (OP)
I used their website….pricing and availability is available online. Besides, the NAPA employees get paid by the hour. It’s part of doing business. I work in industrial construction. I obtain quotes from suppliers, subs, etc everyday. Not once has someone provided us with a quote then berated me for going with another option.
Agreeable-Falcon-37@reddit

pm-me-racecars@reddit
If I need something immediately, or if I just need something small, I'll go to a local store. If I can wait for shipping, then I'll order online.
Rockauto doesn't have a great selection of Fiat 500 parts, I found that out after getting a Fait 500 :(
Bobo_Baggins03x@reddit (OP)
I can’t imagine most places would have a wide range of parts for your 500
pm-me-racecars@reddit
I was a little surprised. It's such a common car, but none of my normal part stores even had an air filter a few months ago when I was looking for one.
iforgotalltgedetails@reddit
They have half the staff and overhead typical brick and motor part stores have. I could list off the various things they don’t have that saves them money which allows them to price parts at lower retail.
Agent_Eran@reddit
RockAuto does not have any warehouses, they are a drop ship operation.
So when you place an order with RA, they just forward your info to the manufacture and your part ships directly from there. So they are cutting out all of the overhead associated with having a warehouse, brick and mortar store, lease/rent, staff, inventory, logistics, marketing etc.
NAPA has to pay for the store, then employees, then insurance etc
So RA can pay the same price that NAPA pays the manufacture for a given part, but do not have the overhead that auto part stores have, thereby increasing their margins.
IOI-65536@reddit
This at least isn't always true, because I've had single boxes with parts from multiple manufacturers arrive from Rock Auto.
But if somebody did what you're describing it would not explain a cost savings. I would expect even if you could get Bosch to agree to ship single units direct to the consumer the cost they gave you for shipping a single unit at a time with a one week order lead time would be massively higher than what AutoZone is paying to have their normal pallet of rotors from the Bosch factory with a 2 month lead time.
dcgregoryaphone@reddit
Idk what you mean. I've never been more hyper-aware of a company's warehouses as I am with Rockauto because your shipping cost hinge on how many parts are in the same warehouse.
Agent_Eran@reddit
those are not RA warehouses, they are referencing the manufacture
Forrest319@reddit
Drop shipping still happens from warehouses and shared distribution centers. There is still inventory, it's not going direct from the manufacturing line to the post.
Flenke@reddit
Rick Auto doesn't stock any of their own parts, they use multiple local parts stores/distributors around the US to fulfill the offers. Each makes their cut by doing volume
kc_kr@reddit
It’s great to get the cheapest price all the time, but damn are parts stores nice to have when you need something quickly. For that reason, I still support them much of the time.
Bobo_Baggins03x@reddit (OP)
I’m too cheap. If I can wait a week, I’m going to RA. Otherwise, I’ll bite the bullet at the local auto parts store.
rdkil@reddit
A piece that others have missed is that because we're in Canada we also need to pay higher prices on just about everything because of the "oligopoly tax"
There's a small handful of parts companies that even operate up here in Canada. Major national chain you have what, Canadian tire, napa, princess auto and the dealership networks? Groceries you really only have three or four. Telecom is only 3, gasoline is what, three or four? We just don't have the same population density as the states so as a result we just don't have the same need for retailers to keep prices down. And if you think rock auto is cheap now, imagine living in Missouri where you're within a three hour drive from all those rock auto warehouse instead of two days.
Heishungier@reddit
I recently bought a caliper from them, I couldn't believe it only cost $7 to ship back the core!
Ag_reatGuy@reddit
Low overhead and economy of scale. If you can wait for the parts it's pretty great. Can't use them most of the time because I've got a car on the hoist and a lineup of cars waiting so I pay a premium to get the parts within the hour.
Closefacts@reddit
Other comments got it right. I am just so happy I don't have to go to Nappa any more and wait 30min to get any service.
redjellonian@reddit
Rock Auto takes a little off the top and facilitates transactions for other companies. Your local company buys the part and marks up the price based on what they can get away with.
Pimp_Daddy_Patty@reddit
Probably because they don't have 1000+ locations so their overhead is much smaller. Also, being as big as they are, they probably have great buying power, and they pass those savings onto the customer.
