I accidentally bought some McVities chocolate digestives instead of the Aldi version and apart from being shocked at the price I discovered that I preferred the Aldi ones (the McVities were crunchier/harder). The Aldi knockoffs have just added Garibaldi to their range and they're too dry. I'll try them again in a few weeks and see if they've sorted them out as I've noticed with other new things they tend to tweak them and sort out any problems after a few weeks.
That's the point. It was meant to sound clean. It was right at the start of when people cared about that sort of stuff, so the name was meant to sound industrial and chemically.
Food fraud has been a thing since food has been sold. From bakers and millers adding fillers like sawdust to their product to modern instances of brands passing off other oils as "olive" and flavored syrups as "honey", it's (unfortunately) a time-honored tradition.
Best thing you can do for spices is to buy them whole and grind as needed (bonus: this means you can toast the spices, and they have a somewhat longer shelflife whole than ground.) Check out specialty grocers- Indian markets, pan-Asian markets, or spice-specific retailers. They'll have faster turnover (i.e., fresher product) and, generally, better deals.
For herbs- plenty of them will grow in a sunny window, and it's not hard to dry them. Plus, you can harvest seeds and re-plant.
Metro is a hilarious name for a subway knockoff. I wonder if all the popular high street brands are like that Jordan Peele nervous sweating gif just waiting for Aldi to knock their product off for better and half the price
Most own brand stuff is actually made by the big brands. They tweak the recipes to order, though. They figured if the supermarkets are going to sell their own versions, they might as well make them as well and still profit from it.
Although I really dig the name Professor Peppy which is Aldi's version of Dr Pepper the taste is a fucking shitshow and should be banned by human rights acts.
The rectangular ones? I’ll say it because no one else has the balls. They’re better than Jaffa Cakes. The cake base doesn’t taste stale on the M&S ones.
No worries, I generally don't like stuff with sauces, etc. Anything mass produced is usually loaded with sugar and salt. Don't get me wrong, I probably over season myself. But I prefer having control over what goes in. Particularly things like sugar.
I've just discovered Morrisons Giant Cheese Puffs which are far better than giant wotsits and much closer to the god tier giant Cheetos I had in America 15 years ago.
Off brand Shreddies (malt wheats, malted wheats, etc etc) always taste better than the branded ones. They’re actually maltier, with more flavour to them. They also tend to be misshapen and crunchier as a result. Love em
I try to avoid Aldi for food shopping because of the scary checkouts, but if prices continue I may just have to try them. However I think any money I may save will instead go towards that middle aisle canoe
asda do some absolutely banging hobnob knockoffs called oatie crumbles that were absolutely better than the real thing
annoyingly, they only seem to do them for a few months and then stop selling them for a few months more, seems to be a total toss up as to whether they're actually being sold at the moment
The Lidl version of chocomel is the nicest chocolate milkshake money can buy. I dunno if it's actually a chocomel ripoff, but it has a very similar font on the carton.
My brother recently told me about this.
Its no glass bottle tho.
Im going to make a list from this thread and visit m and s aldi then lidl when a quiet midday next week!!
A lot of this stuff I sadly can't trust to be alone on the house with tho... 🙄
What company? Would they sell to non trade?!? 😬 😅 Or even if I had to make a company, most of this is long shelf life stuff (as long as don't need pallets of the stuff minimum per order!!)
Back in the 90s my big cousin got her first job in a factory... Packing the IDENTICAL product into both M&S and No Frills packages. It was shocking to a lot of people Lol.
Lidl's Freeway Cola, I gave up drinking Coca Cola or Pepsi a long while back but this, it's magnificent and for 49p (I rarely go there so correct me if I'm wrong) it's totally worth it! Aldi's Vive Cola or Barr Cola are also great options and on par with each other (mind you, Aldi Cola is 49p and Barr is £1.19 RRP)
Lidl Peanut Puffs - sold as McEnnedy Peanut Flips. These can’t be beaten. There are other makers sold in the U.K., but these are 100% better than any others I have tried. They aren’t always available, but when they are I will buy two or three bags to keep me going.
Their Baklava and Florentines are also hard to beat.
I love the Lidl version of Percy Pig from M&S. I think it’s called Henry Hippo. The packaging is exactly the same, the sweet is the same colour. Shocking, I’m not sure how they get away with it.
I thought Percy by M&S would be trademarked in some way? If anyone more knowledgeable could let me know if this copying is legal or not, I’d find it very interesting.
I love Tunnock’s tea cakes. I purchased the M&S teacakes because I thought they would taste similar to tunnocks but they don’t. M&S teacakes aren’t sweet and quite flavourless compared to Tunnock’s teacakes
I've gone through the stage of thinking/assuming it's always cheaper but just as good.
Now most of them are not as much cheaper than they used to be, while just worse enough to notice. Generally these days I'd rather buy the real thing when it's on offer somewhere else. Often it's a similar price.
Toffee ooze. Aldis version of toffee pops are my favourite biscuit and I can't have them in the house as I will gladly eat a whole packet in one sitting.
JLB_cleanshirt@reddit
Frozen sausage patties from Aldi are much better than McDonalds ones
BritshFartFoundation@reddit
They any better than just squeezing out a sausage and forming it into a patty?
JLB_cleanshirt@reddit
I've never done that so not sure
BritshFartFoundation@reddit
I recommend it for breakfast sandwiches. Sometimes I form it into a donut shape and use it for a bagel lol
Namiweso@reddit
You make it sound like it's difficult to beat McDonald's with something cooked at home?
MrTurleWrangler@reddit
Really? I've seen these bur never thought they'd be any good
Dnny10bns@reddit (OP)
I did not know this and I love making my own version at home. Been looking for a suitable challenger for ages. Thx 👍
Imtryingforheckssake@reddit
Aldis ice-cream bars and cones that are biscoff and butterkist copies - delicious! Also their version of Lilt so good and so cheap!
Oh and Lidls copy of bounty bars are delicious.
prustage@reddit
Seems any old big-beaked bird will do. They actually taste good.

psychic_london@reddit
The Lidl versions of Bahlsen biscuits are legitimately better than the originals
PrognosticateProfit@reddit
Most of Lidls biscuits are better than their mcvities counterparts. Rich tea, custard creams, bourbons, all much nicer from "tower gate"
Hitonatsu-no-Keiken@reddit
I accidentally bought some McVities chocolate digestives instead of the Aldi version and apart from being shocked at the price I discovered that I preferred the Aldi ones (the McVities were crunchier/harder). But after working your way through a whole pack of Custard Cremes, it’s all “You shall not pass!”
Richard-c-b@reddit
Same with the twixes
made_from_toffee@reddit
Aldi’s are better too, wonder if they’re made in the same place
Intruder313@reddit
Probably - many 'copied' biscuits are made in the same factory the appear to emulate.
Intruder313@reddit
Bahlsen Choco Liebniz are my favourite biscuit, but I almost only ever buy them on big discount (or in bulk if in Germany).
I will shortly be passing a Lidl so I will be testing this claim! :)
takesthebiscuit@reddit
Lidl versions of Bahlsen biscuits some straight from the bahlsen factory! They taste better as they are half the price and probably twice as fresh!
Chaosblast@reddit
Are they? I love the Bahlsen with wafer, but I don't think they've cloned that one. I would've noticed for sure.
But haven't noticed any Bahlsen clone either tho. I would've loved to try it.
psychic_london@reddit
That truly takes the biscuit
MCDCFC@reddit
Top comment 😂
MitchellsTruck@reddit
The only thing I think Lidl do better than the name brand are the little fun sized Mars bars.
For some reason the big ones are awful, but the little ones are delicious.
spliffwizard@reddit
Are they the Leibniz bc they're my favourite knock off
Internal-Hurry8834@reddit
The fake Oreo’s are better than actual Oreo’s imo 💪🏻
spliffwizard@reddit
Love a neo
RMWL@reddit
Well Oreo’s copied Hydrox so it makes sense another copy should take their place
Dimac99@reddit
Hydrox sounds like an industrial cleaner. 😬
Thyme40@reddit
That's the point. It was meant to sound clean. It was right at the start of when people cared about that sort of stuff, so the name was meant to sound industrial and chemically.
Dimac99@reddit
But I don't want my biscuits to come in childproof packaging, I'm HUNGRY!
Internal-Hurry8834@reddit
If we keep on pace with the upgrades we’ll have the ultimate “Oreo” in no time.
DoDoDoSaliba@reddit
The dark chocolate ones are probably my favourite biscuit from anywhere.
KeyImprovement5735@reddit
I’m always pleasantly surprised by the quality of their bakery, chocolates / candies / biscuits, and processed meat. Those Germans don’t joke around…
psychic_london@reddit
The bakery is great and they’ve always got new stuff. Pretzel rolls appeared in the last couple of months. Amazing for luxurious sandwiches
pajamakitten@reddit
I have loads of those in my freezer for when they inevitably get discontinued.
banjo_fandango@reddit
Lidl jaffa cakes are nicer too.

Aldi's off brand Mars bar 'Titan' is decent. They also do some off brand subway sauces, I think they are called Metro
BritshFartFoundation@reddit
Metro is a hilarious name for a subway knockoff. I wonder if all the popular high street brands are like that Jordan Peele nervous sweating gif just waiting for Aldi to knock their product off for better and half the price
TheGinjaNinja6828@reddit
Love a good Jive bar as well
inflatablefish@reddit
I can't believe they call it Jive when they could have called it Jinx.
inflatablefish@reddit
I've seen their Metro rolls, and they're pretty good but a bit overpriced for what they are. Haven't seen Metro sauces though!
Loose_Acanthaceae201@reddit
They also do Titan ice cream bars, and Titan ice cream sauce, which is basically the caramel goo from the bar. Outrageously good.
zis_me@reddit
Haven't tried the ice cream bars yet but the Titan sauce on a refrigerated titan bar is something else
Intruder313@reddit
And the Racer is a decent Marathon.
MoanyTonyBalony@reddit
Their version of snickers is great too.
Brit_100@reddit
Aldi Racer!
And the Racer Ice Creams are proper good. There’s also Racer and Titan dessert sauce but I’m not that way inclined.
BritshFartFoundation@reddit
Lidl's McCoy's are better than actual McCoy's. The real deal are lacking in flavour 70% of the time and come in smaller bags

Sainsbury's Weetabix. Absolute no difference to the real thing. It's probably made in the same gaff.
marcx1984@reddit

Don't they come marinaded?
NorthAstronaut@reddit
Rinse it off under the tap, and wipe with sponge first.
