Just a foo trynna listen to music in his car

Umm well I've hooked everything up and my head unit will show me the time when j press the display but nothing more. I can show pics of where all the wires lead to for a better understanding if necessary. I own a 1993 Toyota starlet and am trying to hook up a jvc kd-r206. My car doesnt require rear speakers so I just chucked this random part from some beginner crimping kit to kinda like cut it off (purple, purple n black and the green, green n black wires) although I trimmed them quite short so you can't see the green ones) i have connected left and right front speaker cords to the speaker terminals ( it makes sense to me they'd go to each terminal on each speaker, rather then just dangling about) I have Meter but wouldn't know where to start š¤£

I been that foo. Honestly the least frustrating work Iāve done in the c4 (still frustrating tho). If youāve pulled any fuses, for example the interior lights while working on the car, your antenna and power to the stereo may be running on that circuit and you just need to put that fuse back in place. That was my problem.
Usual-Repeat7902@reddit (OP)
That was my problem hahaha ( although I've kept the aerial disconnected cause it's snapped off) some of my fuses were full of blanks ( don't know the actual tern but it was a lil black plastic bit that clips in like a fuse) and I checked them twice and didn't think anything about it. Feel a bit silly over looking that but we've got there now hahaha
Dogman6969ahhh@reddit
Nice! I've always just called the small ones that look like clips fuses and anything bigger a solenoid, but who knows. If you have the fuse in that runs your interior lights, remember to pull it before you do work with the doors open or you'll kill the battery on older cars.
Usual-Repeat7902@reddit (OP)
Wow okay thanks for the heads up
Matt-Schapiro@reddit
Please donāt ever install another radio. Factory electrical harnesses will thank you.
Usual-Repeat7902@reddit (OP)
Dude I honestly don't think you knew what I was looking when I first took It out some time ago. The guys that were trynna fix it before me made me look smart imo. Some cords went nowhere. Some wrong wires plugged in, all the ends were fucked. For an idiot who's listening to music now I think imma install some rear speakers tomorrow.
Usual-Repeat7902@reddit (OP)
A fool can now listen to music in his car š few spots where fuses should have been had like a block in it so I put some fuses in and she goes thanks everyone
RepulsivePeng@reddit
Man adapters are cheap. And it would have been way simpler
Usual-Repeat7902@reddit (OP)
If I had known that I woulda brought them instead hahaha
RepulsivePeng@reddit
Brother did you do zero research lol
Usual-Repeat7902@reddit (OP)
Dude I run off fuck around and find out š¤£
RepulsivePeng@reddit
Fair enough lol
Thesplash94@reddit
. . . Whyād you cut the factory harness? Such barbarism.
Usual-Repeat7902@reddit (OP)
If your meaning the harness from behind the HU.. my bad I just thought that's what you did.if there was meant to be one in the car well there wasn't š¤£
Usual-Repeat7902@reddit (OP)
Or Is that what I've literally clipped in the car hahah
Thesplash94@reddit
Yeah, they make adapters to go from your aftermarket harness to your factory harness so you donāt have to clip anything lol. Your harness I think would have been the Metra 71-1761
GuineaPigsAreNotFood@reddit
If you're saying the HU shows the time it means that at least power is wired correctly. If the HU does nothing more, then it sounds like a HU problem. Are you saying that you can't scroll thru the modes or menus?
Usual-Repeat7902@reddit (OP)
Yup exactly that dude It has to be a hu problem
GuineaPigsAreNotFood@reddit
Yeah, sounds like a HU issue.
Usual-Repeat7902@reddit (OP)
Just checked I'm getting no power to the ignition
MikeTheNight94@reddit
get a soldering iron. And heat shrink.
TurboDorito@reddit
You don't solder wires in cars. It's just janky.
Open barrel crimp, self adhesive heat shrink and a proper ratchet crimper. Takes seconds and you get a perfect OEM connection. Don't need power, can do it upside in a foot well or in the rain without a worry.
MikeTheNight94@reddit
I usually get a pigtail that fits the stock radio harness and splice it to the aftermarket harness. No laying upside down. What a radio there isnāt enough vibration for soldering to be an issue.
TurboDorito@reddit
Why not just buy an ISO block so you dont solder anything? If you have a pigtail for the car side you can probably get an ISO block and the one for the headunit. Worst case you can crimp the pins, still quicker and easier than solder.
The only time you need to wire a stereo is if you cant find the correct plug for the car side. Can also just crimp the pigtail at a bench instead of solder. Ive just never had a single reason to use solder on wiring.
MikeTheNight94@reddit
I donāt care for crimps. Just personal preference. Usually if Iām not gunna solder for whatever reason Iāll use euro style screw terminals but even then I prefer to tin the sore ends first. Iāve never had a problem with soldering
TurboDorito@reddit
Please dear god dont put chocolate blocks in a car... I promise you once you buy proper open barrel crimps, theyre less than a penny each, and a ratchet crimp youll be able to build a harness in half the time. Itll be cleaner, stronger and look OEM.
MikeTheNight94@reddit
Yāall most have some nice cars. Most of the stuff I work on is old and rusty. Iāll look for one of these ratcheting crimping tools next time Iām at the store and see how it does
TurboDorito@reddit
I did maybe the cleanest stereo install of my life in a car with no floor. I could've twisted the wires and taped it but once you've done it a few times by the time the wire is stripped it's quicker to crimp it than anything else.
Just pains me to see sloppy wiring when the correct method is normally way easier.
Usual-Repeat7902@reddit (OP)
This was an interesting read imma do some research into this
TurboDorito@reddit
Glad it helps, for more info... These are the style of crimps: https://www.ptmotorsport.com.au/wp-content/uploads/2021/06/IMG_1461.jpeg They come in a few different sizes depending on wire gauge. I buy them on rolls of 1000.
The ratchet crimp you need to check the jaw size. You get standard crimp sizes and pin crimp sizes. You can get them with changeable jaws so one tool will do everything. https://static.rapidonline.com/catalogueimages/module/53/30/m533021p01wl.jpg You need the middle or bottom right jaw. The bottom middle is the jaw for those crappy plastic insulated crimps, not what you want.
If you really want to up your game buy a reel of nylon braid. You slide it over everything and put adhesive heat shrink on the ends. Gives you an excellent finish, abrasive resistant and way better than electrical tape wrap.
Usual-Repeat7902@reddit (OP)
Wow I get the feeling you've been doing this for a little bit hahaha
guybro194@reddit
When I put my head unit in I used crimp connectors because Iām not good with a soldering iron and Iāve got lots of experience with crimps. I know soldering is the way to go, but as long as it works thatās all Iām concerned about. Next time Iāll solder tho, just gotta get practice.
MagicGator11@reddit
There's nothing more permanent than a temporary fix. Just about every wire in my car is being held together by crimp connectors or flat out only electrical tape.
MikeTheNight94@reddit
I seen someoneās car after the fire from using crimps
MikeTheNight94@reddit
Practice, and get some rosin in a tub. If you put some of that on the wire first is soaks up the solder a lot easier.
Sharpymarkr@reddit
Can I recommend a head unit wiring harness adapter in your future car audio work?
TurboDorito@reddit
Seriously, the amount of shitty crimps I've cut out of headunits is obscene. You can get an ISO block for basically everything. Plug and play and they're not expensive.
Usual-Repeat7902@reddit (OP)
Would you mind explaining what an iso block is, and how I would be able to install, I went to go buy a new harness and seen them but I just seen way too many cords that I just thought were unnecessary
TurboDorito@reddit
ISO harnesses refer to these connectors: https://incartec.blob.core.windows.net/products/5540-2.png
That one is for the headunit side, the car side would have the female plug. Im in the UK so not sure on links for you but Id get something like this: https://caraudiocentre.co.uk/collections/iso-looms/products/m-connects2-ct20ty01 which is a Toyota to ISO harness. Then buy the JVC side: https://www.amazon.co.uk/Jvc-Kd-R981Bt-Harness-Adaptor-Connector/dp/B08YRTM8V4
Done, plug and play. It will give you a bunch of extra wire on the headunit side. Thats normally for lights/cameras/steering wheel controls. If you buy both ends itll just connect whatever you have but you can de-pin if you want.
Occasionally Ill need to modify a bit but you can normally just de-pin the plug and put it back together how you need. No wiring needed.
Usual-Repeat7902@reddit (OP)
Awesome thanks brother I'm sure I can find some here in new Zealand hhah cheers
Usual-Repeat7902@reddit (OP)
Update: I am receiving 12v off my constant but notthing off my ignition line
Sharpymarkr@reddit
Absolutely. If it were me, I'd try to crimp ferrules back on the wires and put the factory connector back together.
Usual-Repeat7902@reddit (OP)
Sure can would you happen to have a link on how to install too. I literally have zero experience with this stuff I'm just kinda gathering bits n pieces as I go along hahaha
KacerRex@reddit
This is part of the reason I love crutchfield, they send the adapters with the stereo.
velowa@reddit
Came here to say this. They will even crimp the new head unit harness into the factory plug for you for a few extra bucks. Thatās not to mention their documentation and customer service. Love them.
KamakaziDemiGod@reddit
A couple of years back, I went to a car audio shop to see if they had the connector/adapter I needed and surprised that they didn't have any on the shelf, the guy working there said they have to order them in, or the owner could splice the wiring for me
I wanted to support a local business, but ordered one online instead because if I wanted to cut up the factory wiring so I can't refit the factory stereo if I ever sell it, I'd have done that myself
nuaticalcockup@reddit
There your 4 function wires. Red - 12v permanent? Yellow - key on power (might have these reversed it's been a while) black - ground blue - trigger wire to turn on amps and in a car your age possibly deploy the antenna.
The rest are speakers grouped in colours with a positive and negative. The easiest way to test speakers is to touch the tabs with a 9v battery they should burp.
Usual-Repeat7902@reddit (OP)
I have the two 12v plugged in and the ground, there is a wire for the aerial, but I have no aerial is it necessary to wire it in? And speakers are sweet bro brand new hahaha
L4KE_@reddit
Connect the yellow and red wire together to test that the headunit itself works. The yellow is the power for the headunit and the red just tells it that the car is turned on and the headunit should be turned on too. Send more pics of the wiring and i might be able to help
Usual-Repeat7902@reddit (OP)
Okay are you meaning to connect those wires to the wires in my car or literally join the red n yellow? ( I think I'm reading this weird) And sure dude. It's gotta be either a power cord or the Hu is just fucked
Mwear566@reddit
Does the radio act normal but no sound? Like you can put it on a radio station but no sound?
If so, a speaker could be blown or the speaker wires outputs are touching. The aftermarket radio will turn the output off on all channels if even 1 channel is shorted.
Usual-Repeat7902@reddit (OP)
Nah I checked the speakers but they're good ( I'd better hope they are good, mfs are brand new hahah) the Hu turns on but wont let me scroll through the menu or play music. Only displays time
Sierraink@reddit
Gotta start some where. The beginning of something beautiful. Music is food for the soul.
bigfatfun@reddit
Heartwarming. But it doesnāt get this fool any music.
Own-Opinion-2494@reddit
Those connectors are fine
illbeyourdrunkle@reddit
There's a yellow wire and a red wire, both must have 12v for unit to power up properly when ignition is on. Yellow should be constant power, red when ignition on. If they both do, then that head unit is bad.
