I don't know if I'm just crazy or what, but over many years of recommending media to people and watching it with them, I've discovered that people just have this sort of innate contrarianism whenever you tell them some piece of media is really good. It's like you're priming them to try to prove you wrong somehow.
I would show my friends kino and I discovered the less I hyped it up, the less they criticized it. Then I really went mad scientist and a couple times I found a movie or show I liked and I said "I tried watching this show cause it had good press, but when I tried it out it kinda sucked. But I thought maybe we could watch it anyway".
After this preamble, guess how they reacted? They would like it.
I dunno if I'm just crazy or have weird friends or what, but I really believe this is how people generally are.
It is and i believe its to do with expectations. "Hey this is good", oh my friend the helpful jello said its good so its gotta be. Bam, expectations high. If it is then a technically good show, its not as good as they played out in their minds, and therefor strikes them as "bad". Same goes vice versa. Thats why when my brother and i recommend shows, we only say "watch this, watch that" no story, no spoilers, no expectations - especially bc we sometimes recommend for our own reality check "oh so the show really was bad, not just to me! Thx, bro"
I've never had that experience with "Bloodsport" with Jean-Claude Vam Dam. I set the bar high telling them to be prepared to be on the edge of your seat and Vam Dam always delivers. Ive showed the movie to over 10 people all them blown away, not believing their eyes.
Tried to get my best friend into elden ring because he beat all of the dark souls games and sekiro, so seemed right up his alley. He came up with the weirdest reasons to dislike it like “it’s too big it’s overwhelming” or “I just don’t think I can learn this combat system” dude you beat sekiro lol.
Like a year later he got into it on his own and hasn’t stopped playing since.
Tried to get my best friend into elden ring because he beat all of the dark souls games and sekiro
Had the same experience as you. my friend has played and liked all the dark souls games, and we are both playing ER for the first time right now. He spent a dozen hours to beat the first Tree sentinel at level 1, then basically speedran the rest of the game. no interest in exploring the open world, he did nothing but beat the main bosses as fast as possible, and then he dropped the game between Leyndell and Mountaintop. Then, of course, his opinion of the game was that he didn't like it.
I feel this, if someone recommends me something I will not care.
Although if I am actively seeking out a recommendation, like if a show is good or not, I will listen to what they have to say, or what the reviews are saying.
I think the best method would be to merely get a show on someones radar, mention you watched it and liked it, and then move on.
I think it’s more of a generational issue. Most people nowadays don’t want to watch something that requires a lot of thought, they want to sit in front of the TV or at the cinema and turn their heads off to take some time. If you like dark then you probably like more “complex” media, which is neither wrong nor right, you are just in the minority
Dark is more complex and coherent than stranger things. It's one of the best serie i have ever seen. Yes the rythm is slow, the deutsch atmosphere is heavy, but this serie is a gem. Yes, the series is complicated and you almost have to take note of certain details to avoid getting lost, but these are the defects of its qualities. The series is so incredible that I recommend it to fans of fantasy or science fiction.
It's the best thing I've seen on Netflix. That said I took a break for a bit after season two and when I came back I didn't know who was who, what was what, and when the fck was going on.
Even then i can see the point of the gf, the first two episodes are both slow and confusing. The boyfriend had to help her tho instead of just dropping her.
I wouldn't even call the first episodes slow, almost every scene is introducing a new character and their relationships with everyone else, if they went any faster it would be impossible to keep track of everything. You're correct about being confusing, especially if you don't know remember the characters' names.
I watched the first two episodes and the only thing i don‘t get is why people are calling it confusing. It‘s pretty obvious from the start, that the kod traveled back in time, but they kept teasing it, like it‘s some big revelation. The dialogue was badly written (as in almost every german production). I didn‘t feel overwhelmed, i was bored out of my mind.
I know a lot of people love the show, everyone has their own opinion, that‘s fine. But i hate when people act like you‘re either a fan, or you just didn‘t get it because it‘s oh so complicated.
It's a complex story, so yeah everything must be put in place in order to work during the saison. Rythm is slow, it can be hard sometimes. Especially on the first episodes, but honestly, after it become more and more pleasurable, and you become hooked to the scenario.
But each his own.

based. i haven't even finished that shit and my german is very, very good.
they just take their sweet fucking time with the events, feels like every episode is just tryna stall for time while basically nothing happens and "oh nooo, some shit is afoot"
don't get me wrong, the cinematography and acting are very good, but it's 90% suspense and 10% actual plot, gets fucking boring after a while, at some point I was yelling at my tv: "GET ON WITH IT!!!!"
At least it's not House of Dragon type slow where you have whole season of things happening but nothing is changing. It's just a specific type of show, if you like action then you won't get hooked because there's rarely any action, it's just mystery and the unknown.
nah i was hooked on the suspense, but halfway through i realized that this their whole shtick. dangle the resolution carrot in front of our faces for whole season. no big reveal at the end of season 1 tho, not really. didn't bother with season 2 because i forgot everyone's names and shit
I watched the first episode with my gf. The post is about a person making a comment during episode 2. But we didnt even make to episode 2. I recall it being more boring Stranger things. Maybe it get better, maybe its a slow burn with great ending. But the post is about the start of the series, not the whole series.
There’s no time travel in stranger things. There’s no monsters in Dark. They’re not comparable at all. Begs the questions. Why is media comprehension so bad now?
Damm bro two series set in a small town following groups of people in the 70s-80s after the disappearance of children, with a dark premise revolving the supernatural/science fiction. Not comparable at all.
lol such a bad comparison, well I don’t like spoiling things but here we go. Dark is a trinity fixed timeline that takes place in 33 year increments. The show spans hundreds of years and is more science fiction and not horror based at all like stranger things. Again you have no clue what you’re talking about… damn bro, almost as if I’ve seen both shows and you haven’t. Crazy how opinions can be bad based off knowledge of media
I did watch it. We were talking about the point of view of someone that's just started season one, why tf would you bring up stuff from season three. The initial premise is similar, I'm not comparing the further development.
Basically every fact you need to remember will be repeated multiple times throughout the show every season. Unless you're on your phone half the time or take weeks between watching, its not that deep. Its a magnificent show that doesnt hold the viewer's hand hand and doest treat them like they have kindergarted level of comprehension. Totally okay to say you dont like the show. But to say its boring says more about the one saying it, than the show itself. The journey it takes you on is one well worth taking.
I’m not refuting the fact it’ll be boring, but if I take a week off not watching the show because I’m playing or something else caught my attention, if I can’t jump back into it without having to find some recap on my phone then I’m just leaving it altogether.
Stranger things is 80s nostalgia slop. Dark is one of the most intricate sci-fi plots about time travel ever put to screen. Of course it’s a slow burn so you have to get past episode 2.
It’s a pretty slow burn but a really solid show in my opinion. A bit hard to understand at times for sure, but it’s part of the fun to slowly try to make sense of everything alongside the characters in the series until it all fits together at the end.
Hey, I found a thing I like from YOUR CULTURE. You know, YOUR CULTURE? That thing you automatically love and abide by because you were born in the place that it comes from? And therefore you automatically love everything produced by YOUR CULTURE?
Wait what do you mean you don't like it?! I thought it was good, and it comes from YOUR CULTURE! What did you say? Taste is subjective and everyone is an individual? Just because I was born into a culture of people that may like a specific thing, doesn't mean I will like that specific thing by default? Pfft, yeah right. You're just a jaded idiot with a false knowledge of YOUR CULTURE and don't know what good KINO is, I don't know if I even want to date you anymore if you don't like stuff from YOUR CULTURE.
I legit can't even figure out what kino could be. Like rizz is easy, spill the tea etc. but kino ? Someone without a bad back wanna help me out on this one ?
Dark is really good but it's not THAT good. The shows you listed are generation defining. Dark doesn't have the ability to make you cry laugh which the other shows do.
If we’re talking generation defining we should probably add lost and the walking dead, though the walking dead was really only good for the first season. It’s true that dark doesn’t have as big of an impact but it’s absolutely amazing. My personal favorite tv series though is deadwood, sadly deadwood ends without a conclusion and the movie they released recently is terrible but it’s just perfect. For me.
Breaking Bad is literally one of your safest bets to watch with a date. Absolute kino and one of the top 5 best shows of all time and at the same time completely digestible to watch casually and just for the hell of it all around.
in case you are wondering: thats not at all what the comment means. it is saying german tv is usually for dummies (which i dont neccessarily agree with, altough i dont watch it), but this show falls out of the norm
I wait to ask who’s buying door until I’m already dead last for points due to having covertly gambled all my points away into the box so it doesn’t look as bad (I ended up with a fucking sniper rifle)
Same, I'll happily buy doors, but if you're being a nob with your points and playing like you're solo just with someone to open doors for you I'll leave your ass to bleed when it happens
How tf time travelling and paradoxes are related to Stranger Things? I watched both shows, they're not even comparable, there are no monsters in Dark. The ending of Dark was bad, besides that it is a great show and if people can't stand other language other than English, skill issue.
The issue was they spent the entire series demanding bootstrapping time travel loops and then they ended on the most overtly in your face grandfather paradox ever, 100% contrivances from start to finish.
The first episodes are a little similar because of the theme (missing child, crazy things going on in the town). And I particularly disagree with the the ending. For me, few series can be good at the beginning, middle and end and dark is one of them
I mean Stranger Things is far from being a bad show but I understand the issue of multiple seasons making it more boring. In the case of Dark, everything was already designed to be done in three seasons and that’s it. Therefore, the narrative is well structured and enjoyable to watch.
A Show as big as ST it starts to become less complex due to its size, which leads to more filler episodes and less pleasant decisions
Russian for cinema. Back in the late 20s, Soviet filmmaker Dziga Vertov coined the term 'absolute kinography'. Relatively recently, Russian weebs and movie nerds starting using it, and it spread. Basically means arthouse movies, or quality cinema.
And no, to any of the idiots reading this thinking it's German, it's not.
The show is called Dark, i have watched the first 2 seasons. Its good but there is much going on, so when the third season dropped i didn't get back into it unfortunatelly.
Nobody hates German cinema more than germans themselves. But sadly they keep producing it. Especially romantic comedy. Fuck I hate those. Everyone knows that we have no sense of humour on top of not being romantic.
German cinema used to be cult - way back with Nosferatu, Metropolis, M, The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari - now it's literally just factory produced comedies everywhere.
I’m (obviously) about the current “cinema” Germany has, or rather stuff it spits out.
Metropolis is one of my favourite movies. I have a few copies of it because every time a new scene was discovered I bought the new cut with it in it.
The decline in quality (and effort and care) put in content is really sad. But I think almost every country that produces movies/tv shows has this problem. Some just have more money to cover it up.
Americans are at fault for Germans' self-hatred. German films, music, etc. are automatically considered as bad and Germans even claim they don't have a culture. Any mention of the "German people" is shunned. Thanks for the re-education I guess.
Stranger things sucks , Dark was good for a season or two and then fell off at the end , couldn't even finish it. Bro can somebody give me a show thatbstarts off good and ends good , that has more than 3 seasons?
I haven’t managed to have a romantic relationship in my entire life, and a fucking 4channer, of all people, is dumping German girls just because they didn’t like some garbage Netflix exclusive
What the fuck is wrong with me that I’m doing worse than a dude who actively uses 4chan?
I just started watching that yesterday and finished the first season immediately because it was great. Starting the second season right now. Easily the best show Netflix has made, Stranger Things doesn't even compare.
At one point some character called some other never before seen character "Agnes" and I new that that was supposed to be an interesting reveal but just couldn't remember who exactly Agnes was in the whole people salad. I love it.
I don't remember that much where I left, I saw I believe 3 seasons and the last I remember is the girl from an alternate reality coming bro's fucked up timeline where he is evil
I like to put this show on to go to sleep, that's not a criticism, it's something I enjoy about it's rainy, grey, slow pace. It's so depressing and sleepy, love it.
Totally not highly rated because people (like you maybe?) think it requires some high thinking to understand.
The show is basically an anime. Time travel shit that doesn’t make sense, and then in the end it’s explained that there’s multiple timelines or some stupid shit that also doesn’t make sense etc.
The 3 seasons/act fit the narrative and all serve their purpose other than the last one. I felt it dragged on way too long and there was little progression happening. Obviously the point was to quite literally tie up all loose ends, but there is no mystery anymore. You just sort of wait for the "end" to happen.
I kept it really spoiler free, some say you need to take notes while watching. If you do, keeping track of families and family trees is important. There is also a website with "notes" that expands per episode that can do that for you.
I highly recommend giving the show a try for at least the first few episodes.
I watched this until the end of season 2 where they wrote themselves into a corner and had to resort to parallel realities to continue. Or at least that was the impression it gave me. To this day I'm still longing for a show or movie with a coherent time travel plot that doesn't involve branching universes or shit just fading from existence.
I wanted to get into this show but couldn't for a reason I couldn't communicate. "Boring" is the word I'd use. It's a shame because I liked the premise and recognized that it was good cinematography, acting, and writing. Same reason why I watched like only the first 20 mins of Parasite. Just didn't hook me even though it checked all of the other boxes to get me interested. I do want to try to watch that again though.
When someone tells me this show is 'too complicated to be enjoyable' or anything similar I assume they can't sit through an episode without picking up their phone five minutes in.
Anon is American and so is his gf she just has a German grandpa that anon is fetishizing. If he wanted her to like the show, shoulda watched it in God’s American Patriotic English 🦅🇺🇸🏈🦅
Stranger things isn’t a real show, it’s nostalgia with annoying kids, that was its peak and then it got way worse. I’ve never met a women that’s
Likes dark though so maybe anon should not try to turn his women into men.
the beginning of this show is okay, it is later on when I actively want every character to just die already so that the bullshit story can finally come to an end
Anon will be triggered that there is probably at least one other piece of entertainment from Germany that his gf doesn‘t like even though she is German
i watched the entire thing but it was really hard for me to keepup. ig theres a netflix website present especially for dark where they tell which charecter is who for every ep. its a really great show id encourage everyone to watch it

I don't know if I'm just crazy or what, but over many years of recommending media to people and watching it with them, I've discovered that people just have this sort of innate contrarianism whenever you tell them some piece of media is really good. I would show my friends kino and I discovered the less I hyped it up, the less they criticized it. Stranger things is 80s nostalgia slop. Dark is one of the most intricate sci-fi plots about time travel ever put to screen. Of course it’s a slow burn so you have to get past episode 2.
thetyphonlol@reddit
Stranger things is dark for teenagers.
1thehighground@reddit
Cant be serious, stranger things was good, yes, dark is just much much better. Especially since season 3 of stranger things exists.
Ok-Average1731@reddit
Stranger things is just cringe and with a bad story, Dark has some good qualities to it and a better story.
Kevincelt@reddit
It’s a pretty slow burn but a really solid show in my opinion. A bit hard to understand at times for sure, but it’s part of the fun to slowly try to make sense of everything alongside the characters in the series until it all fits together at the end.

Genuine question, isn't Kino a Russian band from the 90's?

I wouldn't know. I think in German it roughly means movie theater/cinema but don't quote me on that.

It’s more like a German version is “Lost” than Stranger things but something about fake and gay? Idk. Good show though.

Dark is really good but it's not THAT good. The shows you listed are generation defining. Dark doesn't have the ability to make you cry laugh which the other shows do.
experiment53@reddit
If we’re talking generation defining we should probably add lost and the walking dead, though the walking dead was really only good for the first season. It’s true that dark doesn’t have as big of an impact but it’s absolutely amazing. My personal favorite tv series though is deadwood, sadly deadwood ends without a conclusion and the movie they released recently is terrible but it’s just perfect. For me.

How tf time travelling and paradoxes are related to Stranger Things? I watched both shows, they're not even comparable, there are no monsters in Dark. The ending of Dark was bad, besides that it is a great show and if people can't stand other language other than English, skill issue.
TheOwenParadox@reddit
"The ending was bad" Explain yourself.
Asmodevus@reddit
It was one man's doing and basically all timelines were happening in alternate reality iirc. I kinda hoped for more mysterious/paranormal ending.
iqbalpratama@reddit
The way the ending unfolded, felt a bit rushed, maybe if there's more episodes digging deeper to the lore of that scientist, maybe it will feel better
redditisbadmkay9@reddit
The issue was they spent the entire series demanding bootstrapping time travel loops and then they ended on the most overtly in your face grandfather paradox ever, 100% contrivances from start to finish.
MrMadis112@reddit
The first episodes are a little similar because of the theme (missing child, crazy things going on in the town). And I particularly disagree with the the ending. For me, few series can be good at the beginning, middle and end and dark is one of them
boy_blue1982@reddit
Did this show have a bunch of crappy follow-up seasons? If not, then it's already better than stranger things
MrMadis112@reddit
I mean Stranger Things is far from being a bad show but I understand the issue of multiple seasons making it more boring. In the case of Dark, everything was already designed to be done in three seasons and that’s it. Therefore, the narrative is well structured and enjoyable to watch. A Show as big as ST it starts to become less complex due to its size, which leads to more filler episodes and less pleasant decisions
teenyturnips2@reddit

kdogrocks2@reddit

Conch-Republic@reddit
Russian for cinema. Back in the late 20s, Soviet filmmaker Dziga Vertov coined the term 'absolute kinography'. Relatively recently, Russian weebs and movie nerds starting using it, and it spread. Basically means arthouse movies, or quality cinema.
And no, to any of the idiots reading this thinking it's German, it's not.

morfyyy@reddit
German cinema used to be cult - way back with Nosferatu, Metropolis, M, The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari - now it's literally just factory produced comedies everywhere.
jack_not_harkness@reddit
I’m (obviously) about the current “cinema” Germany has, or rather stuff it spits out.
Metropolis is one of my favourite movies. I have a few copies of it because every time a new scene was discovered I bought the new cut with it in it.
The decline in quality (and effort and care) put in content is really sad. But I think almost every country that produces movies/tv shows has this problem. Some just have more money to cover it up.
GreeceZeus@reddit
Americans are at fault for Germans' self-hatred. German films, music, etc. are automatically considered as bad and Germans even claim they don't have a culture. Any mention of the "German people" is shunned. Thanks for the re-education I guess.

TestningMan@reddit
Totally not highly rated because people (like you maybe?) think it requires some high thinking to understand.
The show is basically an anime. Time travel shit that doesn’t make sense, and then in the end it’s explained that there’s multiple timelines or some stupid shit that also doesn’t make sense etc.
TestningMan@reddit
It’s a pretty bad show.
I saw a season or two, nothing really happens. Cba for them to explain the time paradox because it makes no sense.
They could’ve made it good, but they failed to.
licenselessdriver@reddit
What is kino? Kuniya?
UltimateMarino@reddit
Dark ist ein kino.
