Are “Converse style” shoes popular currently? Or is it just ‘Hollywood’?

It seems a large number of TV and movie characters from middle school to middle aged when wearing casual attire seem to choose unbranded converse style (white sole, laces and toe caps, coloured upper) shoes. Do Americans find these shoes popular or is it a movie trope like 555 area codes and Acme products?
caraperdida@reddit
They're fairly popular, but no you're not going to see every single person on the street wearing them.
Judgy-Introvert@reddit
I have numerous pair of converse. Vans as well. I see people wearing them all the time, all ages. They are both still quite popular.
jgeoghegan89@reddit
They're pretty popular everywhere
cherrycokeicee@reddit
Chuck Taylors are always in style, but they have waves of appealing to certain trends as well.
more recently, the platform ones were very trendy. I remember a period of time in the 2010s where it seemed like every girl had a white pair of low or high tops. many styles were a quintessential part of the emo aesthetic in the 2000s (I think of black low tops in particular, drawn on with sharpie).
but at no point would they be out of style. they're a classic.
witch_andfamous@reddit
yes around 2015/2016 it seemed like everyone had the low-top white converse. then around 2021/2022 it seemed like everyone had the high-top platform black converse
00zau@reddit
I couldn't tell you the last time I've seen them in the wild, though TBF I'm usually not looking that closely at peoples feet.
They probably remain more common in film because enough of a 'timeless classic' that they won't look totally out place, and will age better than using whatever the current trend is.
psychocentric@reddit
I feel like they're popular enough that no one would bat an eye if you showed up wearing a pair. I live near a college, so I see them every day. Maybe not many, but they're around.
psychocentric@reddit
Now, cowboy boots around here have to be a certain kind and worn a certain way or you face ridicule.
machagogo@reddit
Converse have never gone away. There is always some group who wears them. They aren't high fashion, or trendy, but always do well.
Fancy-Primary-2070@reddit
I wore mine today. They are about 35 years old.
smugbox@reddit
Wtf
Mine last like eight months
AJ_Deadshow@reddit
I recently found my old pair of all-black ones looking fresh in their box and got super stoked. I wore the absolute hell out of these guys instead, while having the black ones if I wanted to look more 'classy' or something, idk lol
StereoHorizons@reddit
I have had so many pair over the years. I looked down the other day to see that I was wearing two low tops that were technically identical, but one was clearly older than the other. Not long ago I found a new pair in my closet that I must have picked up on sale at some point and forgotten about, the receipt looks like it used to say 2015 haha.
cguess@reddit
I get at least one new pair a year (I wear the hell out of my shoes living in NYC and walking way more than most of the country). Plus I don't usually wear socks with them so that wears it down more.
StereoHorizons@reddit
I used to live in the Bronx, many a year ago. I definitely remember my shoes wearing out a lot faster back then hahaha.
jlt6666@reddit
Isn't the rubber/plastic/whatever fucked up by now?
Fancy-Primary-2070@reddit
No. They really are totally fine. I wont say I wear them a lot but if I am not in flip flops in the summer, I am probably in them. I have some that are from 1982 that are still fine. I didn't wear them a lot but they are in perfect condition.
jlt6666@reddit
Weird. Guess it depends on the shoe. Maybe those were made in a better time. I've had some adidas shoes I loved but kind of had get lost in a closet. When I pulled them out they were so hard and slick they were unusable (especially as literal tennis shoes). I've also have some ecos have the soles completely disintegrate (which is apparently a problem with thqt brand).
clearliquidclearjar@reddit
If you don't wear shoes, they can get like that. Wear them all the time and they're get worn out but the rubber won't go bad.
Fancy-Primary-2070@reddit
I had these AMAZING Asolo hiking boots. I loved them so much and like my 8th year having them I pulled them out of the closet and the soles literally had disintegrated off of them.
I do hike in mine sometimes (like just couple mile walks in the woods) and I haven't noticed the slick bottom that has happened sometimes with trail runners. They get so hard and slippery they aren't safe on rocks.
But dont jinx me! I like these sneakers.
jlt6666@reddit
Fair enough. I guess the rule is check your shit before you do anything serious in them.
Fancy-Primary-2070@reddit
Oh-- and you know what I just thought of? When I lived in Florida, the hot weather fucked with my stuff. I left stuff over the summer and when I got back the elastic and rubber was ruined. Do you live in a hot weather place?
boldjoy0050@reddit
I wear mine 1-2 times a month. Because of this, they last for 5-8 years.
LilyHex@reddit
I have a pair that's like....5-6 years old or so and are "custom" made, back when they had one of the first Pride customization option limited time deals. So I have very rainbow-y Chucks! I love them but they are not great for rainy weather, so I tend to only wear them during warm months.
quixoft@reddit
Did we just become best friends?
ItchyK@reddit
I mean they have become high fashion and trendy at points. A good example would be once grunge went mainstream and you saw fashion models, wearing them. Heroin Chic and all that.
But yeah, it's usually the shoe of the high school rebel/ stoner /punk/ outcast.
Hell I'm pushing 40, and and I'd pick up a pair every 3 to 5 years. It really is a cool look with the right pants and shirt.
shits-n-gigs@reddit
Where do you live that $75 shoes is expensive?
ItchyK@reddit
Comparatively to what they cost back in the day. Converse were supposed to be the shoe that you beat up, The inexpensive shoe that you didn't really care about. They were supposed to be cheap.
shits-n-gigs@reddit
Enter Crocs.
Bleh. I'll stick to vans, about same price.
machagogo@reddit
For sure.
I never stopped wearing them. Right now I have 5 pair I wear regularly. Black lows, blue highs, black highs, tan highs, black leather and lined highs.
Charlesinrichmond@reddit
this comment answers the question completely
EdSheeransucksass@reddit
Toronto here, I can't remember the last time I saw Chucks on feet. Must've been several years. Everybody is going all out into the NB dad shoe trend, and those fucking Crocs have somehow made a comeback lol.
arcinva@reddit
Crocs saved my feet with all the walking at Disney World when I went in 2015. BUT two of the three pair I wore were not the classic fugly clogs. They actually make really cute ballet flats that are ridiculously comfortable.
But, other than that, I'm pretty old school with my footwear - Docs, Chucks, Birkis, and Adidas Superstars.
I had started building up quite the collection of Converse a number of years ago by regularly watching the clearance sales on their website. I have a pair they did as a collaboration with Woolrich that are plaid wool high tops. But my most special pair were the ones I custom designed for my wedding. Myself, my groom, my 3 bridesmaids, and his 3 groomsmen as wore custom Chucks. The guys all told me their favorite superhero and I designed theirs in those colors and they had bowties with those superheroes. The girls just designed ones they liked the looks of.
bryanisbored@reddit
Crocs are huge now but in ca I see pm att of converse and vans.
RachelRTR@reddit
Crocs are so comfortable. I'm camping now and have them on. Also they are good for the beach and river.
IMissMyLife1994@reddit
They're still popular. When I wore them in high school they were associated with emo kids, now they're associated with hipsters
Ok-Dish-17@reddit
I'm in my 40s and still wear the same pair of converse I wore to see Prince at 1st Ave in Mpls in 1995.
They're still comfortable, in great shape, and they're always in style
burn_your_books@reddit
I never figured out why Allstars sucked when I was younger then I found out that I have 4e feet. I wish they made them in my size.
TopperMadeline@reddit
I wore them in high school for a while in the mid-2000s. I made the mistake of wearing them to P.E. class one day where we had to run our school’s track.
GhostOfJamesStrang@reddit
Converse All-Stars are kind of timeless. They aren't always the current 'in' style, but they are never out of style.
I'm not sure I would call those other things tropes. They are just default place holders we've found work well when we don't want to use the name of a real company or a real phone number.
machagogo@reddit
Yeah. 555 is not a valid exchange. It is used in movies intentionally rather than a real number.
GhostOfJamesStrang@reddit
Yup. And 'Acme XYZ Company' just sounds like a generic brand and thanks to cartoons like Wile E. Coyote and Roadrunner, it stuck.
Certain_Mobile1088@reddit
I always thought it stood for “Army Corps of Mechanical Engineers,” you know—people who would have anvils and dynamite. Hahahaha.
PikaPonderosa@reddit
I just found out that Acme is ancient Greek for "highest point."
caskey@reddit
There's a Wikipedia page that lists like a hundred fake beer brands that are used when product placement isn't a thing.
amd2800barton@reddit
Quentin Tarantino has his own cinematic universe brand of cigarettes.
drsfmd@reddit
Red Apples.
TillPsychological351@reddit
There actually is a grocery chain in the northeast called Acme. The Road Runner cartoons confused me as a kid because I was pretty sure Acme did not sell anvils, fireworks and dynamite. Or at least, not the Acme where my mom shopped.
DGlen@reddit
The acme packing company is literally the reason we have the Green Bay Packers.
timothythefirst@reddit
Didn’t that all start because so many people were calling 867-5309 after the song
shelwood46@reddit
No, using 555 prefixes for phone numbers in movies & tv predates that song by many decades (but people did try to call Jenny *a lot*)
Perdendosi@reddit
555-1212 was a real number to be connected to directory assistance back in the day.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Directory_assistance
jonathanclee1@reddit
555-1212 still works here in Indiana for time and temp
Curmudgy@reddit
Specifically directory assistance (aka information) out of the area. The 411 number connected you to local directory assistance. (And 611 was for telephone repair.)
NorwegianSteam@reddit
I do like my tortoise ans gold clubmasters, I can't lie.
Fillmore_the_Puppy@reddit
These are so common/low key always in style (but not particularly stylish) throughout the US (for decades with no hint of going away) that what we call them even has regional variations. Where I grew up, they were always "Converse," but other places they are Chuck Taylors or simply Chucks.
BackUpTerry1@reddit
I know a few people that wear them, but I would never.
CorndogDangler@reddit
I liked them better when they were 2 for 10$ at JC Penny
AdderallGivesMeWings@reddit
Rocking my red Chuck Taylor's now
AkwardRockette@reddit
They've been common, affordable, and considered a decent fashion choice (not stunning but it goes well with basically everything except formalwear) since the 90s. They're just constantly everywhere.
ShanMan42@reddit
I've got 4 pairs. That's all I wear!
Drew707@reddit
Converse and Vans which are similar are both popular.
Superb_Item6839@reddit
Vans are definitely more popular in CA, but Converse are still pretty popular.
GhostOfJamesStrang@reddit
There's also the PF Flyer niche.
therealtinasky@reddit
Man, I love me some PF Flyers but their manufacturing is bait. They dont even last two years these days.
baalroo@reddit
Neither do converse.
therealtinasky@reddit
My converse wear out and my old feet can't take their lack of support after about 3 years of wear, but my Flyers have literally fallen apart with the soles tearing and shoe tips pulling off.
baalroo@reddit
Exact opposite where experience here. Converse rarely last more than a few months for me, my wife, or any of my kids.
omg_its_drh@reddit
I’m going to be honest. In my 30 something years of life I don’t think I’ve ever seen someone wear those.
Finemind@reddit
I have 3 pairs! The classics from the Sandlot, some striped ones and plain colored ones.
Drew707@reddit
Do they make you run faster and jump higher? Can you escape The Beast?
seattlemh@reddit
I had to Google them. I've never even heard of PF flyers
omg_its_drh@reddit
I’m only aware of them due to references in old movies/tv shows.
seattlemh@reddit
Happy cake day! Now I'm wracking my brain trying to think of references, lol
creep_nu@reddit
The sandlot
seattlemh@reddit
Ah, that makes sense. My memories of that movie are vague at best. I think I was either too old or too young when it came out.
Fappy_as_a_Clam@reddit
I had a pair, but they were goofy to wear, and my wife hated them lol
I ended up returning them.
Superb_Item6839@reddit
Yeah, haven't seen those in years, my best friend in high school used to wear them all the time.
GhostOfJamesStrang@reddit
The only reason I'd have them is because of The Sandlot.
MrRaspberryJam1@reddit
This is anecdotal but I noticed vans are more popular with younger people, or at least people who are 30 or younger. All my life at school and just on the city streets I’ve seen more vans than converse.
baalroo@reddit
I've always noticed the opposite. Where I live vans are way more popular with people over 30, by far. Young folks tend to think they're dorky old guy shoes.
MrRaspberryJam1@reddit
That’s how converse were sort of viewed where I can from. I grew up in the so called “hood” though so that might have skewed things. Vans were not super popular either but definitely more popular than converse, especially among guys. I went to school with a lot of Black and Hispanic kids who would never be seen wearing converse. All the cool kids had Jordan’s and other expensive Nike basketball shoes.
StereoHorizons@reddit
Rest assured, plenty of people above 30 wear both converse and vans. They’re exclusively the only brands of shoes I have bought for 20 years, outside of dress shoes and boots.
shelwood46@reddit
Both perennial favorites with GenXers even to this day. Our current D candidate is known for wearing pink ones.
rawbface@reddit
I currently have 3 pairs of converse all stars.
And my local grocery store chain is called ACME. It's nothing like on looney tunes, it's just a grocery store, though with a superb bakery.
ii_akinae_ii@reddit
i wear them almost every day. and i definitely see others wearing them at least once a week. they're not as popular as some styles of sneakers, but they're definitely relatively common!
RelativelyRidiculous@reddit
Americans aren't a single homogeneous block. Converse is a type of shoe that has always had their niches. They have been a staple of various younger fashion groups like basketball fans, goths, punks, lollies, skaters, and grunge through the years. A lot of that was low price point that still wears well.
Wondering are you asking the trope question because Converse are a frequently worn shoe for certain common TV Tropes? For example if you've got a group of young women or girls in a show or movie the tomboyish one often sports Converse. If the pretty/sexy one leans toward the darker/goth side she is also likely to wear Converse. Manic Pixie Dream Girl trope characters often sport them in a variety of colors. This is probably a price point sells it situation.
StinkieBritches@reddit
I wore my black Converse twice this week.
hopopo@reddit
They are simply a classic. Most people have at least one pair.
Personally I stopped wearing them years ago, when I found out that Nike purchased the company.
seatownquilt-N-plant@reddit
They are timeless. My feet are no longer comfortable in Chuck Taylor Converse shoes, and I am tempted to buy the barefoot/wide toe alternatives with the same pattern.
I had classic chucks when I was a university student.
Bayonettea@reddit
Same honestly. I'm nearly 40 and Converse shoes make my feet hurt like hell; they have no support in the least. I could go for a pair of those barefoot ones though; I've been wearing that type of shoe for a while now and it hasn't been so bad
rya556@reddit
About 15 years ago their insoles/soles sucked- they were thin and you could feel every bit of the ground.
The new ones I’ve tried on seem a lot more cushioning and you can even pay a little more to get extra cushioning. The sales are great too and if they start to stink I throw them in the wash. I legitimately have pairs that are 10-15 years old
baalroo@reddit
I bought a pair of the Amazon brand barefoot shoes that look somewhere between chucks and wrestling shoes for drumming, but have ended up wearing them all over the place because they're so comfortable and look so good.
Fappy_as_a_Clam@reddit
For a while there was a Chuck II style, that had a cushioned insole, and they kicked ass. I wish they still made them.
TheBeefiestSquatch@reddit
I had a pair. Super comfortable. The problem with Chuck IIs, though, is that without the racing stripe they looked like knockoffs. I think the Chuck 70s have upgraded guts? Not sure.
Fappy_as_a_Clam@reddit
I think they do, but I can't bring myself to spend $100 on chucks lol
I just switched to Vans or Adidas for a casual sneaker
ibejeph@reddit
My middle aged feet no longer allow me to wear Converse or Vans. I can see the day when I too turn to New Balance.
ghostwriter85@reddit
Do it!
Barefoot shoes feel amazing after a couple weeks.
left_justified@reddit
I wear the lugged sole Converse hi tops. I find them much more comfortable than the classic Chucks but they're also a lot chunkier.
EvaisAchu@reddit
I am wearing a pair currently. They are the fun celestial star covered ones and they are my favorite shoes.
They have a standard popularity I would say. Not crazy popular like Stanley cups, but popular enough that you would probably see several pair walking through a crowd of people.
MisterKillam@reddit
I have a pair of plain red and white chucks that are a core part of my "business fun" wardrobe. Navy blazer, patterned red tie, chinos, and chucks.
Slow_D-oh@reddit
I love pairing my red chucks with dressier/business attire. Adds a great touch of whimsy and I get tons of compliments.
rya556@reddit
Reminding me of the 10th Doctor rocking his chucks with his suits.
Snoo_63187@reddit
The "style" and what is "hip" escaped me years ago. I'd rather buy a pair of New Balance shoes than whatever kids are gawking over.
Damn kids with your sneakers and your new slang.
dr_trousers@reddit
I'm in my 50's and I'm currently wearing a pair of white laceless slip on Converse sneakers (yes, they make slip on sneaks and they're great)
rubey419@reddit
Converse and other classic sneakers / shoes come and go.
I actually think we are past the latest wave. Taylor Swift made chucks popular again in what 2012? I don’t see many Gen Z wearing Chucks anymore.
JacobDCRoss@reddit
Chuck's have been popular for a century. They are not going away any time soon.
MuffledOatmeal@reddit
I see them daily, they're everywhere.
Anxious_Public_5409@reddit
They have always been popular!
Tadpolish@reddit
Pretty popular with different age groups. Personally, Chuck's and Vans is all I wear :)
throwawayshirt@reddit
As many have noted, Converse design is timeless. That's an advantage to any TV/film production that wants their costumes/wardrobe to not look so dated after 5 or 10 years.

dreaday4@reddit

Suppafly@reddit
Super popular. Source: Have kids in high school and college.
howdiedoodie66@reddit
I bought a pair for weight lifting in college, and wore them out at night one time, worst pair of shoes ever outside the gym I don't get it. Does this mean I have flat feet or something?
EdgeCityRed@reddit
The Converse Chuck 70s are MUCH more comfortable and squishy for walking.
New_Stats@reddit
Probably. I can't wear them, they don't give me enough support. I can DM you the inserts I got off Amazon if you'd like. They're $20 and I love them. You're going to need support for your feet before it starts becoming painful to walk. Prevention is so so so much better than dealing with the hobbling pain
howdiedoodie66@reddit
I've never really had an issue with any other shoe which is weird. I wore through the insole on my current shoes walking and put some Dr. Scholl's in that are kind of nice. What brand are yours
New_Stats@reddit
Walk hero for plantar fasciitis and flat feet.
EverybodyRelaxImHere@reddit
I’ve worn them for decades because most styles fit my very wide feet. Shoe shopping is brutal for me and odds are good that converse or vans will fit.
Signal_Mind_4571@reddit
I have a theory that they keep them so uncomfortable so that they are worn mostly by young people and in that way stay "cool". I can't wear them any more, I'm uncool.
yxngsyrxp1999@reddit
They are the most timeless and iconic sneakers imo and are always in style, I see people of all ages wear them and I think movies and music culture play a role as well. I personally have 12 pairs along some Nikes and wear them regularly :)
drewcandraw@reddit
They've always been a popular style of cheap, casual footwear. By the time I got my first pair as a kid in the 1980s, they came in every color of the rainbow. Into my 30s I often had at least a pair in my closet, usually black or unbleached white.
These days, I prefer Vans for cheap, canvas, retro-style footwear.

Yung_Onions@reddit
Lots of people wear converse where I’m from but they’re not like the dominant shoe by any means. Not even top 5 but maybe 6 or 7.
engineereddiscontent@reddit
I used to wear them but their quality has dropped a lot. They used to be hard bottom and higher quality canvas on the sides. Now they are thinner and no good.
ju5tjame5@reddit
Converse are never out of style, but they aren't as popular as they were when I was in school in the late 2000s
Pleasant_Studio9690@reddit
I’m in SoCal. Vans still rule here, but Chucks are really common. A lot of us wear them in the office of our large manufacturing company. And that runs evenly across Gen-X and millennial plus a lone young Boomer. Not sure about Gen Z as most of them are newer hires and therefore wearing steel toes on the floor. They’re comfy, casual, and classic.
azuth89@reddit
They're a staple style of shoe, fairly common without being the peak of fashion or anything.
Also a bit of a climate thing, they're more popular in places with less rain and especially less snow.
Acme is a trope, 555 is intentionally used because they made some problems for people when they used a valid number. There are no 555 numbers in the US.

My son and I wear them to auto x and around for drinks after track days. They are great for driving and look good in shorts or jeans.
ghostwriter85@reddit
The low top versions look fairly similar to a lot of casual shoes.
A lot of people enjoy flat soled shoes (me included) as they're arguably better for your feet.
From a Hollywood perspective, an unbranded flat sole shoe tends to look better than an unbranded cross trainer / running shoe. There's less visual clutter and they can color coordinate better.
Curmudgy@reddit
I had converse sneakers as a kid in the 60s. That’s before they became a fashion item, but also before leather sneakers and Adidas, etc. took hold. They were just the common canvas sneakers.

I'm not sure I'd say 555 is a trope. It's purposely not used for phone numbers. If you don't want people to harass a real person then you use 555 in your movie.

It's definitely a common style, but not for me. The paper thin soles do not bode my feet well. Hoka has become my go-to brand

Everyone has had a pair of Chuck Taylors at some point it seems
seattlemh@reddit
I'm wearing Chucks right now
flootytootybri@reddit
I wear white low rise Converse literally every day. It’s not like super popular but you definitely can find people that still wear them.
No_Maintenance_1872@reddit
Chucks are always in style.
To quote the poet Tupac In LA we wearin chucks not ballys (yeah that’s right)
ElTito5@reddit
I would say that they are common in Southern California. My coworker actually just walked by wearing a pair.. pretty common shoe.
mundotaku@reddit
Converse are pretty common. They are cheap and are the kind of casual shoe that you can use on almost any occasion.
In my previous job they were allowed on Fridays, but on my current job I could wear them any day. For the record, I have worked office jobs most of my career. I also went to art school when I was younger, and it was very common for other students to paint on their shoes.
Teens also like them because they come in multiple colors and they can add to them if they want to. They are so ubiquos that nobody would think less of you if you wear them. Obviously, parents are also happy to pay $20 - $60 bucks for a pair that their kid will outgrow.

The platform high tops are popular with middle and high school girls in my area.
Myfourcats1@reddit
I wear them. I wore them in high school too back in the mid 90’s.
UltimateAnswer42@reddit
Converse has been a style since the... 70s? Maybe earlier?
They'll never be my style, I got a pair in middle school and the side blew out in less than a week. That was my discovery that shoe width actually means something
calebismo@reddit
Chuckies are hugely popular in South America, I note.
5432198@reddit
Throughout my life I have always had at least one pair of converse.
QuercusSambucus@reddit
They're pretty popular shoes even if the design is 116 years old. At two different jobs I've gotten custom company-branded shoes as part of team-building activities.
AtlantianBlade@reddit
Dunno... I've only ever worn Wal-Mart shoes
taskforceslacker@reddit
I have my Chuck Taylors in the closet. My go-to are low Vans these days. I find the sole more comfortable.
TheBimpo@reddit
They’ve always been in style, they’re timeless.
omg_its_drh@reddit
They’re popular.
potentalstupidanswer@reddit
Reasonably popular. Last time I went diving, three out of four people getting ready near me were wearing them over our drysuits.
