Human-Watch4685@reddit
I shan’t continue watching without the original trio. Sorry.
Nothing2NV@reddit
The end of an era. This is probably the most emotional I’ve been over a show ending in my life
hi_im_bored13@reddit
Kinda reeks of new top gear. I found with top gear I watched for the hosts - after the trio left it never had the same appeal.
TunakTun633@reddit
It's hard to manufacture a team of people which will have the right chemistry. More to the point, where most Top Gear style shows are expected to have this chemistry instantly, that wasn't even what happened on the original show. It's kind of an impossible task, and accomplishing it requires out of the box thinking.
When Top Gear needed new hosts, they started with a lot more than 3. As far as I can tell, they were testing public opinion on which hosts the audience would like the most.
I say go a step further. There are many well-established automotive YouTube channels with their own chemistry, and without Amazon's budget. What if, for an entire season, Amazon funded one channel per episode for a road trip made largely on the creators' terms?
The Grand Tour cost what, $3M per episode? Say they gave even a quarter-million per episode. Auto Alex, Big-time, MCM, Throttle House... I imagine that's an incredible amount of money for these teams. The content variety would be very interesting.
TempleSquare@reddit
This is the right answer. It's a 21st century approach that embraces the new "bottom up" model of democratized media.
So naturally, they won't do it. They'll go right back to some grey-haired casting agent and bored focus group... sigh.
dattroll123@reddit
I would totally watch a cross country Arby's tour with savagegeese
9millaThrilla@reddit
The MCM Japan trip was the closest thing I've seen to a Grand Tour episode. It was an entertaining, fun, and somewhat educational adventure. Moog would be a great sub for Clarkson as he's just the right grit of abrasive enthusiasm
John_Sux@reddit
I think American car Youtubers have such a different energy to what they would be replacing here... I think that's a neutral way to put it. Would it work at all?
Mythicchronos@reddit
I think it's a good different. Amazon needs to put in the effort to find A good trio that has chemistry, without trying to make THE trio. Do something different while still maintaining chemistry.
TunakTun633@reddit
I kind of intentionally added non-American channels to my list, but I'm not sure matching the original team's energy is the way to go.
cereal7802@reddit
I would add that they could also probably sweep up current and former show hosts from motortrend shows who seem to be working on alternative outlets for their content more recently suggesting MT might be ready to get short of some content/hosts. Freiburger being a good recent example. He has started up his youtube chnnel and has been putting out a good bit of content on it. Finnigan had started making his youtube content some time ago. You can scoop up some of these people and make essentially the same sort of content you would with clarkson hammond and may without needing to spend months trying to build a relationship between the hosts because they did that already years ago.
Impressive-Potato@reddit
Andy Wilman said each episode cost about 4.5 million Euro, So over 5 million USD.
peanutbuttahcups@reddit
An anthology series is a great idea, and avoids the pitfall of pitting YouTubers who are great on their own team but might not have great chemistry with others, especially if they're making content outside of their comfort zone.
HLB217@reddit
Love, Death, & Robots but for automotive youtubers would be incredible, I'd dig it.
One of the episodes has to be Mr Regular and Roman just navel gazing though, it would not be complete without this.
peanutbuttahcups@reddit
An anthology series? That would be very neat. Lend some car YouTubers a big time production and budget and let em go crazy with their own established brand of content, just possibly turned up to 11. I think that would be better than pitting a bunch of people together who work well on their own but might not have good chemistry with each other.
Mr-Hat@reddit
I would watch the whistlindiesel episode
SpaceBoJangles@reddit
That would be really cool. I’ll throw in a cup that has already been doing a successful show, the Everyday Driver Team. They’ve been putting out excellent video and podcast content for years and I’d say would fit really well into the “cool car dads” slot.
Pretend-Rock8293@reddit
Spot on. Too many people think they can throw in their favorite hosts and imagine it will just naturally work. It won't. Chemistry between the hosts is everything.
mdave424@reddit
Hmm I think the very slim silver lining this time is that they’re leaving by choice as opposed to you know… fired.
hi_im_bored13@reddit
Definitely leaving on better terms but that shouldn't make a difference in the search for new hosts.
I'd nominate Thomas & James from Throttle House, their few roadtrips have been great, but I'm not sure if they're at Grand-Tour/TG level quite yet.
OMGWTHEFBBQ@reddit
Thomas, James, and Jason Cammisa would be incredible.
LXNDSHARK@reddit
Randy Pobst can be the new Stig.
dumahim@reddit
I legit think Randy would just be a good host, period, not just a good driver. I was laughing quite a bit when he was in a recent video was Jason Cammisa.
OMGWTHEFBBQ@reddit

Tillman_Fertitta@reddit
Personally would like to see Mark from SG to be in there as the curmudgeonly old man yells at cloud type person.
Honestly, everything amazon in this space ends up reeking of corporate bureaucracy and feels like it's made with the input of 600 decision makers in the room. They can throw money behind whatever endeavor they want but ultimately something magic will be lost because it is such a giant company with so many decision makers, and there's a natural creativity that comes with having some financial constraints.
scalablecory@reddit
I think SG is the best car reviewier around right now.
He could hold his own in any technical discussion for sure, but I'm not sure we've seen that "presenter personality" that the Top Gear guys all have.
Reyesaa@reddit
I dont think SG are bad but they are by far the dryest watch of the big car youtube channels right now. They know their stuff, but it's like if an owners Manual was a car show.
Dunkelz@reddit
That's by design though, for their April Fools/more light hearted segments they've shown to have good talent there too.
BrightLuchr@reddit
Savage Geese, Doug Demuro, and Hoovie would have huge comic potential and are all very experienced presenters. I'm suggesting these three because they are all very different personalities and that dissonance is part of why Top Gear worked.
probsdriving@reddit
Hoovie? Hoovie? Blud is literally the worst presenter in all of automotive YouTube 😭
CompetitiveLake3358@reddit
I think Savage geese Mark Is one of the best creators in the space, But his best work comes from him being a writer, editor, etc. and not just being a personality. He fills his own niche providing humor and technical reviews. And I would hate to pull him away from that
chiefmackdaddypuff@reddit
I would say the same for Thomas and James. Jason Cammisa could probably switch over since the styles are pretty similar.
What's happened is this new generation of content creators have taken up the TG mantle in spirit and in a new medium that allows for more creative freedom. I find this new medium better for content and information overall. There's no point pulling people excelling at doing what at they're doing, to make something with more constraints.
hi_im_bored13@reddit
More constraints but significantly higher access & budget. I'd love to see the throttle house guys review a AMG One, Tourbillon, etc. Or properly abuse a G-wagon & Range Rover. You don't get those opportunities with a youtube budget & dealer cars.
But of course when you have a wife & kids at home, I'm sure you'd prefer the flexibility of youtube instead
EastwoodRavine85@reddit
He's just so damn pretentious though, and not in the buffony, want-to-have-a-beer-with-em way Clarkson is. Thomas and James would be good, but they'd need someone to take the piss out of them for balance, since they can come off like giggling kids.
Tillman_Fertitta@reddit
That's true. I just thought he would be a good counterbalance to Thomas and James. I think Hoovie would be good too - he's a good story teller and good in front of the camera and generally adds a different flavor.
whenweriiide@reddit
FTFY. Imagine dropping 500 mil for a show like Rings of power.
Pretend-Rock8293@reddit
I love watching Mark's videos but it's so niche and enthusiast oriented, it would never work for TG or GT which tries to be more appealing to a wider audience.
ihaveadogalso2@reddit
Dude, mark would be amazing on that show honestly. I'd 10000% watch a Thomas James and Mark show
Vaeevictisss@reddit
Ya for real. They have come a long way and have great production quality on their videos.
ultra_r@reddit
Chris Harris was fantastic. His reviews are also super entertaining, great bloke!
OMGWTHEFBBQ@reddit
I like Chris Harris a lot too. When he was on a Throttle House episode it was awesome. I do think Jason would be a better third host though as he has more personality and is more entertaining to watch. Love his stuff on Hagerty.
probsdriving@reddit
Ultimate r/cars circlejerk
asiansensation78@reddit
Another vote for Thomas and James from Throttle House, and Jason Cammisa from Hagerty. And maybe Randy Pobst as Stig? That would be an ALL-STAR team.
truthdoctor@reddit
Dream team.
OMGWTHEFBBQ@reddit
Would be so epic. Right now my favorite car content is TH and Jason on Hagerty
koenigsaurus@reddit
Those guys, plus SavageGeese for more informational stuff on cars I am more likely to buy someday, are pretty much the only car media I watch these days.
aMiracleAtJordanHare@reddit
That would be a fucking phenomenal combination.
yeahnahyeahnahyeahye@reddit
Thomas, James and Jason
Or
Thomas, James and Chris Harris
And I'd be very happy to watch that
RobertM525@reddit
I think that would be a great trio, but only if they have total creative control to do whatever they think would work best. If it's going to be forced and phony, I would prefer they just continue making their current shows.
OMGWTHEFBBQ@reddit
Agreed 100%. If they could just do what they do now but with huge budgets that would be epic
jeffh19@reddit
Omfg yes
SEND_ME_FAKE_NEWS@reddit
With Randy Pobst as whatever they call the stig.
directrix688@reddit
We should will this into existence
Rabo_McDongleberry@reddit
Yeah. I really like both of those guys but I don't think they're there yet either.
But honestly, I didn't think Matt Leblanc was actually bad. I think it was just that they put him in British Top Gear.
reddit_account_00000@reddit
I thought he was fine. He needed someone better to play off, and Chris Evan’s was not it.
fiddlythingsATX@reddit
Yup - I think he actually was great, just on the wrong show. And talk about a rough start - Chris Evans was horrid, one of the worst presenter choices possible, and he had to deal with THAT for a season while establishing his place in the show.
mr_beanoz@reddit
I wonder why people dislike Evans so much, at least he knows his car stuff.
Impressive-Potato@reddit
he was in morning radio host mode all the time.
mr_beanoz@reddit
Well, he's a radio host after all, that's his nature. It's kinda like expecting Jon Champion to not sound like a sports commentator if he was asked to host a non-sports program.
9897969594938281@reddit
“Well yeah, he is a prick after all”
mr_beanoz@reddit
Okay, but why people are calling him a prick?
fiddlythingsATX@reddit
For me it wasn't his knowledge, because he definitely is a knowledgeable car guy, it's his presentation style. It always seems like he's yelling, it always seems like he's struggling to talk while driving. Oh and of course the strawberries.
joe2105@reddit
This is the problem with other shows though. The trio weren’t well known back in the day when they started Top Gear. I don’t want a cast curated for TV and want honest individuals that stories can be built AROUND. Not individuals that have stories already and are chosen for the show based on their celebrity status.
Rabo_McDongleberry@reddit
I mean all three were well known in the UK. They didn't just come out of nowhere. Hell, Hammond was brought couple years in because they wanted a young handsome guy to bring in the female demographic.
I think Matt would work well in the US because he's will known so there is less risk. But for car people, they will be super surprised to know how much of a car guy he actually is.
Hell to add to that, I'd like to have just 1 special with Matt, Patrick Dempsey and fucking Jon Hamm on a trip.
Ceorl_Lounge@reddit
Guy knows his cars and is great on camera, those are pretty basic qualifications and some of the others hosts failed them spectacularly
HUMBUG652@reddit
Get the old Car Throttle lads in
The-Rizztoffen@reddit
They even got a short guy to make fun of. Perfect replacement
joe2105@reddit
Exactly, it needs to be genuine people like this and not people curated for an audience by the marketing department. They have character!
isaac99999999@reddit
I think they could do it but it would be a bit of a rough adaptation at first
ModeR3d@reddit
Any new presenters have to have chemistry already if it’s to work, that’s what Top Gear got wrong. Chucking different people together and hoping it’d be as good was never going to be a success after the trio left, particularly as they tried to keep the same format and style of tasks/trips.
Thomas & James would work a treat, they are already a great watch on YouTube. Wonder if GT mk2 will focus on its specials or try to go back to the tent type of event.
tacomctacoson@reddit
The level of their roadtrips is likely only hindered by budget though. You throw $10 million dollars an episode at something and it’s bound to be levels above.
Aken42@reddit
I think they are asking for a problem when putting new hosts in on an existing show.
I love your Throttle House suggestion but just give the two of them a bigger budget to make a bigger Throttle House.
Dragobrath@reddit
I don't think anyone on television (at least car related) comes even remotely close to Clarkson's personality, and he's like 80% of the trio's success.
2Drogdar2Furious@reddit
Two of them did leave by choice last time...
theoreticaljerk@reddit
I mean, they left by choice because Clarkson was fired.
a_gallon_of_pcp@reddit
He wasn’t fired
There’s a whole gag about it in the first episode of the grand tour
Eureka22@reddit
Are you just kidding and going along with a gag? Cause he was very fired. Extremely fired.
a_gallon_of_pcp@reddit
Are you kidding and didn’t watch the first episode of the grand tour? Because he wasn’t fired.
Eureka22@reddit
I watched it many years ago, I don't remember, if you are referring to a gag they did. But in real life he was fired.
a_gallon_of_pcp@reddit
In real life his contract wasn’t renewed. Which is different from being fired. Which is what the joke is about.
Eureka22@reddit
That's semantics... He was fired.
TunakTun633@reddit
And those semantics formed the basis of a joke in the first episode of the Grand Tour.
a_gallon_of_pcp@reddit
He wasn’t fired
There’s a whole gag about it in the first episode of the grand tour
Eureka22@reddit
Are you a bot? You can argue what word you want to use all you want but he was fired for his shitty behavior.
phulton@reddit
He wasn't fired. Conveniently (no sarcasm) his contract was up soonish after that event, they just didn't renew it. Richard Porter (OG Top Gear script editor) talks about it in a TST podcast from a few years ago: https://youtu.be/Zj7uV0HUGvw?feature=shared&t=5925
2Drogdar2Furious@reddit
That's true. I was being a bit pedantic.
I hate to see them go but I'm surprised they've been able to keep going this long too. End of an era.
UndeadWaffle12@reddit
True, I refused to even give new top gear a chance because they chose to get rid of the trio.
svideo@reddit
Clarkson somehow got himself “fired” right at the exact moment the other two’s contracts were up and Amazon was throwing enormous piles of money at him if only he could somehow be available.
Boxadorables@reddit
Only Clarkson was fired. Hammond and May quit in solidarity
R_V_Z@reddit
Technically he wasn't fired, just not offered a new contract.
Bister_Mungle@reddit
Maybe if he won his bet about the McLaren P1 being faster than the Porsche 918 Spyder and the LaFerrari they would have had more faith in him and given him another contract. What a shame he had to be so so wrong about that bit.
Keilly@reddit
There was the multiple racist quotes, final warnings, and punching a producer because there was no hot food provided after a days shoot (Clarkson was late because he'd been drinking). So yeah, the faith well was pretty low by the end of it all.
djseifer@reddit
Technically, May and Hammond left by choice. It was the orangutan who got fired.
RedshiftOnPandy@reddit
I wonder if they would be open to doing cameos. Like the new cast runs into one of them in them somewhere in the middle of nowhere
LeBaus7@reddit
I liked the chris harris, leblanc, rory version.
AustrianMichael@reddit
The later ones were ok even. It was certainly watchable…
rugbyj@reddit
The trio started to really gel in the later ones, what didn't work was that they'd spend half an episode doing something completely unrelated to cars for the BBC promo reel.
Bungy-ing Flintoff off a dam isn't particularly interesting regardless of whether he's technically in a car or not. We know he's up for anything. He literally had a show where he went around the world doing weird shit for fun to show how fearless he is. Why that bled over I don't know.
The "crazy" stuff they used to do with cars still largely justified the car being there/driven.
EmergencyRace7158@reddit
Same. The paddy, Freddy and Chris version was also very watchable. The last 2 seasons were genuinely good.
attanasio666@reddit
Rory didn't quite fit with the other 2. I like his videos on the Autotrader channel though.
mopar39426ml@reddit
They were actually quite good. Had they kept with them for a few more years I think it would've become really good.
downvote-away@reddit
Rory and Harris are great.
RobertM525@reddit
Agreed. I thought they worked well. It was probably a little overly scripted still, but it was still entertaining.
YellowFogLights@reddit
Same. When reruns of that season come on the Roku channel I keep getting reminded of how well they worked together.
mateww@reddit
Anything after Chris evans was half decent in my opinion.
First season of TGT was pretty shambolic too. I'll give this a chance
LionTigerWings@reddit
maybe they'll buy out throttle house. Personally I think even trying to do another season is a dumb idea.
rugbyj@reddit
Weren't Throttle House on some streaming service a while back in some minor capacity (I swear they mentioned some of their content was being uploaded to one)? Otherwise I think they enjoy the freedom they have on YT, and honestly it fits the more flexible release schedule of new cars which manufacturers have settled into.
But I'd imagine if Amazon backed up their money truck they could get them.
Agloe_Dreams@reddit
I mean, that is the thing though - new TG was just bad casting. I bet you could actually get a good set of hosts and have something people want.
hi_im_bored13@reddit
I thought the last bit of TG with Chris, Matt, and Rory was pretty solid. 5th gear had an excellent cast and in some ways was a better car show, but never had the same viewership.
I think amazon can still put together a profitable show but nothing at the level of GT
ThermalScrewed@reddit
That last top gear bit was brutal, it really felt like the producers wanted to kill them. They almost did after all. Not to mention Hammond's MULTIPLE life threatening accidents.
Alternative_Ask364@reddit
I agree that was the best combo. Chris and Rory had great personalities for the show and Matt had the right combination of passion for cars and, “I’m rich and doing this all for fun,” energy.
The big issue with new Top Gear is the hosts never had enough time to build chemistry, and people got upset when they couldn’t replace 3 guys with over a decade of history together in one season.
Mythicchronos@reddit
Other than the CHM diehards who blindly hate on it for not having the original 3, I think another problem was the first season having an incredibly grating Chris Evans turned off the rest of the people who wanted to give the new show a chance. That pretty much killed the momentum that even the good Harris Leblanc Reid trio had difficulty regaining.
FSUfan35@reddit
Harris, Paddy and Freddie were starting to build some chemistry before Freddie's accident.
So_Full_Of_Fail@reddit
And the very early TG seasons are a bit rough, too before the guys fell into their groove.
MisterSquidInc@reddit
These two things are related I reckon.
Top Gear got more and more popular as it moved further away from being about cars and towards being entertainment with cars.
Incidentally, 5th gear might be the only car show ever to have 3 ex racing drivers as presenters
SeljD_SLO@reddit
My favourite thing about 5th gear was Tiff driving like a maniac while everyone around him were terrified
wangchunge@reddit
😅🤣😇😆🤗 Superb Driving....
Pretend-Rock8293@reddit
It has to do with the chemistry.
What made the show good is these three are mates. They shenanigans they perform feel natural because they are all really close. You can't replace that with your favorite "insert favorite host here" unless the other two have also have a close bond.
To put it in a different way, when we go greet our friends we may say something like, "Hey you piece of shit come give me a hug." They know you're joking. And you both know you can dig at and tease each other because so you're so close so it's just fun and games.
TheDrunkenMatador@reddit
Yeah. Clarkson picked Hammond and May because he had worked with them on old old Top Gear before and enjoyed doing so. That chemistry was already there (or at least the foundation was there) When BBC tried to replace them they just picked three guys, and they never clicked. The old American TG trio were picked the same way, they did end up clicking as it went on but viewers didn’t want to suffer through the foundation being built and by the time it got good the shows reputation was unrecoverable.
RitzBitzN@reddit
That show was actually great. I wish they never canned it.
PiratesFan1429@reddit
Yeah I loved it, you just couldn't view it the same way as British TG because Tanner was a better driver than the rest of them.
I_Am_Mandark_Hahaha@reddit
They could have offered the job to the 5th Gear squad. Tiff Needel and company would have at least made decent car content. Or Sabine from TG Germany.
Impressive-Potato@reddit
Or Sabine from TG Germany Sabine passed away from cancer a few years ago.
I_Am_Mandark_Hahaha@reddit
Oh. I didn't know!!! :(
Impressive-Potato@reddit
It was during the pandemic. Very sad.
coffeebribesaccepted@reddit
Not just casting, but also having three hosts and a producer that are as creatively brilliant as they were. I am highly skeptical that they'd not only be able to find those replacements, but also that the replacements would be as enthusiastic about cars and have great chemistry together.
Impressive-Potato@reddit
The producer and directors will likely stay on. Top Gear has the same producers and director from before and The Grand Tour
Not_starving_artist@reddit
Start with 3 friends.
Multifaceted-Simp@reddit
Yes no one will match the trio. But the throttle house duo is fantastic, if they could join up with savage geese and have a show I'd enjoy it
PrpleMnkyDshwsher@reddit
It takes time to develop. Everyone seems to forget the first few years of the Clarkson era Top Gear were really, really awkward, they even swapped out of of the original guys for May.
The 1st Attempt at a US Top Gear with Foust/Wood/Ferrra was clunky as hell at the start but they started to gel and sadly, didn't get renewed when they were just finding their groove.
Even the Leblanc TG was starting to work after they punted Evans before he decided to walk away.
NotsoNewtoGermany@reddit
Rowan Atkinson could get me there.
superstock8@reddit
I think TG finally had a good set of hosts with Chris, Patty, and Freddy. They seemed good together and were getting some of that banter back. But they were repeating some of the same things and Freddy was getting hurt in his crashes. Sadly it ended. In America we still have not gotten to see the final season from 2022 without a paywall. Even BBC America has not aired it on tv and last I checked on Amazon it is not available. The thing I am glad about GT is we are finally getting the goodbye episode and we know it is final. For a while I was not sure if we would get that. I don’t know if TG actually said farewell because I have not seen that season. I know TG still posts stuff to their website but as a show that we all grew up on.
LetsGoWithMike@reddit
I agree. It wasn’t the OG three level by any means, but I definitely started to enjoy these three.
smilysmilysmooch@reddit
The problem with every Top Gear is that nobody they seem to hire really would sit in a normal car. Thats where May, Clarkson and Hammond came from. The super cars came later but we all grew to trust 3 guys with different views on what an automotive should be. Clarkson chased power, Hammond chased style, and May chased comfort. The only person that legitimately tried to make Top Gear was Chris Harris and they would bury his good stuff like his quick reviews of each new class of cars on youtube. Rory might have worked, but he just seemed more interested in making Top Gear than presenting it. Everybody else was just there to drive super cars or much about. I include Top Gear America in all this.
Yes the trio worked well, but thats because we grew to understand them as personalities and Clarkson as writer had no problem emphasizing that. Captain Slow is the guy who would sit us down and bring us Dacia news. Was it interesting? No. So they made it a bit.
Hamster was the porsche guy or the American muscle guy. Why? Because style over performance. You want to see him in a Zonda.
Jezzah was the power obsessed giant ape. Clearly more than that but when tapped in to his instincts, he makes us all want to feel the power of a Bugatti racing against the clock.
Not one presenter in dozens of seasons has been able to understand the ensemble dynamic other than Harris who was the but of the jokes but ultimately took it on the chin because he was ultra competitive and just wanted to drive. Not LeBlanc, not Dad, and unfortunately not Flintoff who we still arent sure will be able to present anything.
I think they can replicate Top Gear or the Grand Tour. Its not hard, they just cant give in to their lust for making it appeal exclusively to trips and hyper cars nobody will ever be able to afford. The show can have those things, but its the reward for driving a beat up coupe around Bristol. We all have driven that beat up clunker, so we can relate. Seeing someone we relate to getting to drive a limited edition Ferrari is our wish fulfillment.
Hopefully we get that instead of another rich dude driving around in cars he would have to move some things around to get. We want to see normal blokes doing something we never could like building a hybrid vehicle or racing a jet plane. We also want to see dudes we know doing things we can like buying a cheap car in a foreign country and driving it across it while they fall in love with the country and their car.
SophonsKatana@reddit
If the Throttle House boys are about to embark on a new cross over show with Jason Camissa I would totally be down for that.
EngineeringKid@reddit
Imagine top gear with Jay Leno, Jerry Seinfeld and Adam Carolla as the hosts, back in 2010 era.
What could have been....
carguy82j@reddit
Would have been epic. Too bad they are getting up there in years now.
Atreyu1002@reddit
Wow, I actively dislike all of those people. Jay Leno I'm on the fence about, maybe everything I've heard is slander.
LeifEriksonASDF@reddit
The car fan in me is in constant conflict with the Conan fan in me when it comes to Jay Leno
peanutbuttahcups@reddit
Same, but after Jay Leno finally, really, stopped doing The Tonight Show and started doing his garage YouTube channel, and Conan had continued success on TBS, that conflict was easier to swallow, for me at least. But yeah, Conan getting dumped just because Leno wanted to go back was and still is fucked.
FullMinkJacket@reddit
I'm pretty sure that's the ring of hell you get sentenced to for letting a good car rot in a barn.
johnny_tifosi@reddit
I would like Rowan Atkinson too. Huge petrolhead.
realtomatocatsup@reddit
Leno, Seinfeld, and Tim Allen would have been golden. They're all good friends irl. Wouldn't have to fake the chemistry. Leno and Allen might have done it but Seinfeld would never have. Carolla would have it considering he filmed a TG USA pilot. But that whole ship has sailed. Like you said... 2010.
The Spike's Car Radio trio now would be good but replace Jonny Lieberman with literally anyone else.

mugdays@reddit
If they’re replaced with someone of the caliber of Chris Harris, then it could actually be good.
FiveAlarmDogParty@reddit
I am not a Brit so I have no idea - but were Clarkson, Hammond, and May famous before top gear or was it a stroke of luck that they worked so well together and people enjoyed them and made them famous? I’ve seen videos when May first joined and he was an auto writer I think? Maybe they should roll the dice on 3 unknowns and see if they can make it work. But I think the charm of top gear was at first it was fairly low budget, and then when the team started meshing well they gained popularity and then the extreme stunts/trips/challenges etc
Boundish91@reddit
Chris harris is good, but he couldn't carry it alone.
SpaceBoJangles@reddit
I think that Chris Harris Jason Cammisa are the Richard Hammond archetype. They can very much be the lead in their own smaller productions (Hammond has dozens of excellent documentaries) and the most fun of a group, but I think that what we need is a Jeremy Clarkson to tie everything together. May you coulda mostly replace with someone like Henry Catchpole and while it would never be a true replacement, Henry’s calmness and dry humor would be such a perfect homage I don’t think anyone would care.
Maybe someone like Matt Farah for the lead? He tried with the Sorted series on YouTube and that was fun, but just didn’t get the views/funding it needed.
ineyeseekay@reddit
It is definitely the hosts... The witty banter, the car choices that matched their well-known personalities, the humor, and of course the lovely British self deprecation... It isn't the same without them. It's like replacing the cast of Seinfeld.
Floydlloyd11@reddit
I vote for Thomas and James!
SpaceBoJangles@reddit
It’ll require different archetypes. I for a while came up with possible trios. Jason Cammisa, Henry Catchpole, and Chris Harris would be interesting. Chris and Jason have similar personas though juxtaposed to Henry’s more calm, May-like demeanor, so the jury is out on whether that group would work.
As weird as it is to say, I think that you could come up with a winning set to replace Richard and May, at least partially, but no one I can think of right now can truly replace Jeremy. His grating yet honest personality is the source of a lot of controversy on and off camera, but he was the heart of the show, I believe he was the reason why the revived 2002 show existed in the first place. Maybe someone like Matt Farah from The Smoking Tire could do it, but I wonder whether he’d want to try heading up such a MASSIVE production with such high stakes. He tried with his YouTube series sorted, which I thought was actually kind of cool (Rob Feretti and Elmilia Hartford were fun to have there as supporting cast).
WolverineMinimum8691@reddit
It could work. But it requires hosts as charismatic as the trio. And part of that charisma is something that Amazon's other shows show they're not really willing to hire for. But maybe, just maybe, they'll make an exception here.
SolarMacharius562@reddit
Somebody floated Sydney Sweeney as a potential host for new top gear which is both hilarious and also unironically not the worst idea
CuriousTravlr@reddit
Idk, the Car Throttle guys, maybe Hoovie, and some other youtubers could be great at a new Grand Tour.
Lasd18622@reddit
I wondered what Camisa has been up to
elpaco313@reddit
To be fair… if they have Matt LeBlanc following them again, I’m in.
Arthur-Mergan@reddit
I personally won’t even bother, just as I didn’t for TG. Once they’re gone, it’s over. They ARE the show.
ggouge@reddit
Top gear/grand tour are those three. It's not the same show without them and will fail. Most people who watched for the hosts not the cars. They need to.let the show die.
car_dreamer@reddit
If continuing with new hosts, I recommend Thomas and James from Throttle House. To me that is the only viable solution. Ideally, let the show rest in peace.
Ecsta-C3PO@reddit
Why shoehorn new hosts into someone else's format? I love Thomas and James but Amazon or whoever should just pick up TH and give them budget and show support. We don't need another literal Top Gear, we need a show that has the spirit of Top Gear.
As long as they don't do the all too common mistake of taking popular internet people and locking their content away from the internet and wondering why it doesn't perform.
car_dreamer@reddit
You are probably right. I can get behind a budget boosted Throttle House.
Phazushift@reddit
Yeah but that also means they will have a boss and ulterior interests. TH might suffer from creative restrictions.
HankSteakfist@reddit
Yeah, basically, any time a YouTube channel has been bought out by corporates it is ruined and the original creators flee and start another channel.
Donut and Hoonigan are textbook examples.
sharktoucher@reddit
they wont be able to make buttplug jokes at mercedes anymore
le_b0mb@reddit
I like them as they are now. Cool channel, discord channel to talk to fans, game sessions with fans. I’d rather not lose it in the chase for more funding and bigger things.
WolverineMinimum8691@reddit
This is the correct answer - and something people using spreadsheets and data to make decisions simply can't understand. Hence all the failures of the offshoot and reboot Top Gears.
tatsumakisenpuukyaku@reddit
exactly. We can't replace Top Gear, but we can recreate it in the aggregate
LeifEriksonASDF@reddit
Ironically, one of the YT channels I feel has the spirit of Top Gear the most right now is Rory Reid after he moved to Autotrader UK. Not on the adventure or humor side of things like TH is, but purely on the car review end regarding things like production value, cinematography (and honestly, "Britishness"). Really underrated channel, I've never seen it brought up on this sub yet.
HankSteakfist@reddit
If they do something like Top Gear or the Grand Tour they'd have to water down the actual car content to cater for the broad audience. Chris Harris said he disliked having to do circus stunts and gimmicky stuff on Top Gear because that's what spiked the ratings and the informative car content segments saw viewership drop.
YouTube allows Thomas and James to make the content that they want, rather than what some executive things will sell.
RangeRoverHSE@reddit
I actually wouldn't want that because I would rather TH continue as it is
nathansikes@reddit
Throttle house is basically top gear at this point. When was the last time they featured a regular car?
Odd-Refrigerator-425@reddit
How regular are we talking? Because they just did the Elantra N yesterday lol.
RangeRoverHSE@reddit
They did the WRX a month ago, and the Accord and Camry 3 months ago as well as a trio of $10,000 sports cars at the same time.
Chriswheela@reddit
100% agree. I’d rather a video a week of Tom and James than one a year. They’re gunna be hugely successful I imagine on there own through their current channel I reckon
GymLeaderMatt@reddit
💯
TommyLGarage@reddit
I totally agree! And add Jason Penske from Engineering Explained and we’ve got ourselves the perfect trio!
Seaworthypear@reddit
No lol. Penske can't fill the shoes
He doesn't have the right charisma for major television
V12MPG@reddit
I guess we’re just going with “Penske” now lol.
Art_VanDeLaigh@reddit
Never knew that was his last name, so now I'm starting a rumor that he's from the Penske fortune, which explains why he can afford an S2000.
GripKing2000@reddit
It's not, his last name is Fenske
SpaceBoJangles@reddit
Henry Catchpole?
OldManInAHotHatch@reddit
But James May does?
Ksanti@reddit
People watch engineering explained to genuinely hear him talk through stuff.
People watched top gear (in part) to watch them make fun of James May being boring the moment he started talking about anything dorky.
It's an entirely different role
bgroins@reddit
Yes, as the straight man
Art_VanDeLaigh@reddit
He would be like the engineering version of the stig. When they introduce or modify (in ridiculous ways), he's introducing the car and why its interesting. Maybe more like Q from Bond?
shellmiro@reddit
Add in the other Jason (Cammisa) as well. Perhaps he could be the Stig
kuroyume_cl@reddit
Randy Pobst as the driver
sieffy@reddit
Let poor Randy retire
m0viestar@reddit
Motortrend will have Randy doing hot laps on oxygen and a wheel chair, and Randy would be stoked to do it.
SpaceBoJangles@reddit
“Until you’re NINETY”
orhantemerrut@reddit
God no. I can't take another 3rd grade level dick joke.
rather_be_redditing@reddit
So basically a hagerty production
car_dreamer@reddit
Super. Cammisa has done 2 or 3 cameo for throttle house and it was fun. The trio is complete.
SpaceBoJangles@reddit
Oooo. This would be excellent.
CMDR_omnicognate@reddit
i feel like the only way it could really work would be if it ends up focusing on different stuff, they could maybe still do the sort of challenge special episodes, especially if they have good chemistry like the throttle house guys, but maybe have stronger emphasis on actual car reviews, or car history, or doing actual interviews with car celebrities/companies ect.
xeothought@reddit
Thomas and James ABSOLUTELY have the og Top Gear vibe. They're fantastic.
But I also don't wanna lose Throttle House lol
Wrothgaar@reddit
Or maybe the Roadkill guys. Someone who can fix their rides in the wilderness.
coffeebribesaccepted@reddit
I feel like James from Speeed (previously donut) could be good as well. I've always loved his up to speed segments, and they're a bit reminiscent of when Jeremy used to go into the history of a car.
arup02@reddit
Is James the plump one? That thinks screaming is peak humor?
Jesburger@reddit
He lost a lot of weight after having a heart attack at like 27 years old
arup02@reddit
Just saw a new video of his, he's looking good.
coffeebribesaccepted@reddit
I'm not really sure what you mean by that, but this is his newest video on his new channel where he goes into the history of things.
arup02@reddit
Yeah, that's the guy.
YellowFogLights@reddit
I can tell you haven’t paid attention in a while because he stopped yelling quite a bit since he had an actual heart attack.
Two_Shekels@reddit
You know they’re going to find another bunch of bland hacks with sufficient industry connections
stubob@reddit
So we'll end up with Lance Stroll, Bronny James and Jaden Smith. Great.
Two_Shekels@reddit
Wouldn’t be surprised if Jonny Lieberman sneaks his way in there somehow
AmNoSuperSand52@reddit
”A thing isn’t beautiful because it lasts”
Part of appreciating something is knowing when it’s time to let it go. I’d love if the trio did Grand Tour forever, but if they’re going to leave, it’s time for the show to end
Also Throttle House is great, so why mess that up?
RollTh3Maps@reddit
They probably agree with each other too much.
Cowcoc@reddit
Seconded as long as their main channel doesn’t suffer. Would hate to see a perfectly good car channel go to shit because of that sweet Amazon money tit.
CanniBallistic_Puppy@reddit
Or maybe the Car Trek trio.
chasebencin@reddit
Oh shit actually yes this would be a good idea. But amazon is allergic to good ideas so I doubt thats happening
JpermoGaming@reddit
I'd second those two, that's the only other piece of automotive media that comes close to the feel of the golden trio.
Quatro_Leches@reddit
Id ficking watch that
albiorix_@reddit
Ha, we can dream. TG Australia was smart enough to get a host from a good youtube series. Remember, mostly American audience for amazon and as Tiff said " they want a wider audience." They're going to dumb down the show and bring on celebrities, I guarantee it.
LionTigerWings@reddit
Actually, having them do challenges and road tripping on the grand tour and then having them keep throttle house for reviews would be a perfect combo. They did one "grand tour" style episode and it was amazing. I imagine it's too expensive for them to regularly do that.
Technical-Tea-5668@reddit
I believe they are working on another currently.
car_dreamer@reddit
Yes. That was a good episode. All in all i like that community here is receptive of TH as a successor, in spirit, of Top Gear / Grand Tour.
aroundincircles@reddit
Probably would never happen, but the guys from Car Trek. but I don't think they are friends anymore. Tavarish, Ed, Hoovie.
Earl_of_Northesk@reddit
They are not? Wondered why Car Trek stopped.
aroundincircles@reddit
From my understanding Freddy cheated on his wife with aging wheels Robert’s (now ex) girlfriend. It was mad drama between all of them, but they were very respectful and kind about it publicly from everything I saw. Freddy burned a lot of friendships down.
BlueGraflex@reddit
that, and hoovie is doing auction shows now, and ed's probably running a 3 card monty table somewhere to fleece some suckers.
aroundincircles@reddit
Very true. I don’t know if Car Trek, as much as I enjoyed it was worth the squeeze.
t-poke@reddit
Woah, I hadn't heard that. Crazy.
I know Hoovie got divorced (not sure of the reasons why, none of my business anyways) but had no idea that was going on.

Matt Leblanc, there's you music.
mortalcrawad66@reddit
Bring back Top Gear USA, you cowards!
sps49@reddit
It didn’t work well on ad supported TV. You can’t declare winners and losers, much less call out crap, when you are paid by the companies whose products you review.
willpantaleo@reddit
i’m calling it now that this will be what actually happens. i remember one of them sort of confirming that there was something brewing a while back.
BusinessBlackBear@reddit
Id be game. Miss seeing Adam and his crazy car choices lol
mortalcrawad66@reddit
What's your favorite vehicle he chose? It's hard for me to pick, but what he did with that white Coup DeVille will always be iconic.
They started a podcast a few years ago; called Speedy, Beardy, and the Mole. They only did a few episodes before stopping, which sucks because I rather enjoyed it.
A few of the episodes they did, is them watching episodes, and they don't cut anything out. Allowing you to play the episode as you watch them talk about it.
EmergencyRace7158@reddit
It'll be difficult to replace the 3 but I'll give it a shot if the hosts are good. The post Clarkson Top Gear was finding its feet with Matt, Rory and Chris and then again with Freddie, Paddy and Chris. The last couple of TG seasons were genuinely good and I was looking forward to more. Perhaps the Grand Tour could hire a new crew to take over. Not sure we need a pro racing driver like Tiff Needell or Chris Harris but there are car YouTubers and famous car enthusiasts (its a shame Leno is too old/rich) who could do this really well.
No_Skirt_6002@reddit (OP)
I think this is the wrong move. If they wanted to continue having a car show, at least slightly change the name, because it'll never be the same without Clarkson, May, and Hammond. BBC2 learned that the hard way. I honestly can't think of any modern figures in the car community who could ever see doing a proper TV show.
strongmanass@reddit
Throttle House Thomas and James...and Chris Harris just to piss off Top Gear again.
txmail@reddit
I think Hoovey, Tavarish and Ed make a great trio when they are less scripted. I love Thomas and James because it seems more natural and their skits are actually funny, and the cinematography for their adventure specials is off the charts.
MLPorsche@reddit
AutoAlex, Taylor and Rory?
AutoAlex, Jack and Ethan?
instantur@reddit
They have great chemistry but I feel like you need a third guy to make it work as a full production
txmail@reddit
Ok, Sara n Tuned, deadpan humor but also pretty knowledgeable about cars and the industry.
Blaze4G@reddit
I watched car trek but it was just decent imo. Their "jokes" seems forced or just not funny lol. Thomas and James skits are almost always hilarious. I found myself skipping through the banter on cartrek and just watching the car segments while for TH, it might be something I am completely uninterested in but I have to watch the skit at the beginning.
JJMcGee83@reddit
Add Jason Cammisa and I'm in.
strongmanass@reddit
I don't think he could bear to leave Hyphen, so let's throw him in too for the James May ever-explainer role.
NCC-72381@reddit
Throttle House plus Jack from Savagegeese.
WannabeHistorian1@reddit
Jason Cammisa is very different than James, but the way he explains technical things is so great. I think he would fit great with the Throttle House boys.
MikeofLA@reddit
No. Leave Throttle House alone. Unless they were to air it AS Throttle House and end TGT.
Thicccchungus@reddit
Shit honestly…? That’d be pretty good…
Bradymyhero@reddit
The original trio are old and yesterday's news. Viewers are looking for something fresh
It was fun while it lasted, time to move on
cakes42@reddit
The guys from donut would be nice. But they are on their own now.
mini4x@reddit
Car Trek, its an homage to Top Gear already.
deja_geek@reddit
The BBC wasn’t in the wrong. Top Gear existed before the trio. Where they went wrong was trying to recreate the same feel as Clarkson, Hammond and May
MLPorsche@reddit
to quote Richard Hammond:
The_one_who_SAABs@reddit
Oh so it's going to suck
oroscor1@reddit
David Freiburger, Mike Finnegan and Steve Dulcich.
eezyE4free@reddit
I’d like to see them bring in like 6 or 9 hosts for the first season/series and see how the relationships developed naturally in the actual environment.
Aside from the cars, the rock-paper-scissors type personalities are what I found the most genuine. You could relate to different hosts at different times. Sometimes 2 of them would gang up on the 3rd and you could be on either side of conflict.
The cars and mods were extensions of their personality.
Miserable-Assistant3@reddit
It’s funny how it’s clear without saying who of the original trio is rock paper or scissors.
mister_pleco@reddit
Clarkson, Hammond, may?
Miserable-Assistant3@reddit
May clearly is paper
mister_pleco@reddit
Scissors are precise, papers pretty dumb?
Miserable-Assistant3@reddit
Paper has knowledge and James is a by the books type of guy. Hammond would probably find a way to hurt himself with scissors.
mister_pleco@reddit
Well at least we can both agree clarksons the rock
Miserable-Assistant3@reddit
Indubitably
nlgoodman510@reddit
Uh, the guys getting paid?
If not, meh, good luck.
nariz_choken@reddit
Well they are really old, except Hammond, he could probably still do another 10 years of GT
Nomad_Industries@reddit
This is a bit like Amazon continuing "Clarkson's Farm" but replacing Clarkson and Caleb with the guys from the Epic Gardening youtube chanel.
Just let new people launch new shows.
Screaming_God@reddit
They refuse to build anything. They just want to snatch up IP’s and throw money at it. The era of television where things like Top Gear could be given the space to grow into what it is now is sadly long gone.
ProtoJazz@reddit
That's kind of the strategy with so much stuff now.
Anything that isn't an instant hit is given up on immediately, and anything that is is milked till it's done.
It's not exclusive to media creation though. I've got a friend I play board games with a lot, and something we love to do is just blindly try new ones.
Our other friends hate doing that, so it's usually just the two of us. And almost every time it goes something like this
Start of game: this is neat, I don't know what to do though
Middle of game: I hate this
End of game: I hated that. Let's play it again
And we do. Often several times. Unless the game is truly terrible, the more we understand it, the more we like it.
But too many people can't get past the first part.
You see it in hobbies too. So many people in the guitar subs with posts like "I've been playing for a week and I'm not amazing"
Jugzrevenge@reddit
Then it sounds like another Flop Gear I won’t be watching!
I WOULD watch a show hosted by Scotty Kilmer, Vice Grip Garage, and those two sellouts from Roadkill! Last thing I want to see is another Tanner Faust, Guido, and washed up comedian!
BahnMe@reddit
Unpopular Opinion:
The British Top Gear the last 3 seasons were actually quite good, the 3 guys have a lot of chemistry and are genuinely funny. The last few GT have been IMO, kind of painful and lack the chemistry of the best Top Gear episodes from their heyday (Arctic, Vietnam, Boat vs Car races, etc) . It really feels like they're pulling their own teeth to keep this going so I'm glad they're retiring from GT. Their individual shows are much more entertaining.
DK4E2XFpbETJrj@reddit
You think so? There's only so much insulting of one host i can take before it stops being mildly humorous.
Dignam3@reddit
Agree, the more recent Top Gear is pretty good.
reddit_account_00000@reddit
Grand Tour has definitely had some standout episodes (Mongolia special is my personal favorite) but yeah it’s definitely been up and down in terms of quality.
Comprehensive_Dog651@reddit
I agree about the other seasons of grand tour except for s3. That season was when they really hit their stride and I thought it matched up to their best from TG
ChrisHanSolo@reddit
100% agree. One Harris, Paddy, and Freddie hit their strides, it was better than the later seasons with the original trio.
DjImagin@reddit
Those 3 finally got their chemistry going and it was getting to be very entertaining. Then Freddie got into the accident
BusinessBlackBear@reddit
Yup. I love the current three.
Was utterly saddened when news of Freddies accident came out and doubly so when it was announced the show moved to indefinite hiatus
FSUfan35@reddit
I wouldn't say it was better but it was a very good show for sure.
Capable_Ingenuity726@reddit
I hate to agree but it’s true. The bits seem far more rehearsed while at the same time giving the impression on phoning it in.
Mythicchronos@reddit
Dependent on who they pick, recasting would not go as bad as people claim it will be and will go much better than TG. Unlike 2015, there are a plethora of car related personalities to look through with their "auditions" already up on Youtube to see, so the task of finding interesting car personalities that potentially can mesh well seems like a lot easier of a task than before.
Can already think of a handful that would be a good match for the TGT format, and frankly I'm excited about the idea of someone like that being elevated with the production and budget of Amazon Studios.
zigthis@reddit
Agreed. the pinnacle of Grand Tour was Vietnam and Mongolia. I've shown those to friends who aren't even into cars and they were a smash hit. The last few have been meh. I'm glad they're continuing it though - especially since Top Gear has now been 'paused'. It's challenging but possible to find good chemistry with new hosts, even though it'll never be the same.
BahnMe@reddit
Mongolia was epic, except for the strange ending.
And the Bostwana special is also a fave.
BlackberryHopeful659@reddit
Agreed. I watch them more out of familiarity than anything. Still entertaining, but they peaked a long time ago.
FlipperoniPepperoni@reddit
They peaked in TGT Mongolia episode, not TG.
BahnMe@reddit
Yes, they feel like they're my old uncles who were AWESOME AMAZING FUN when I was young but now, with me being middle aged, these guys just seem in pain and are more engaged/entertaining when they're pursuing their own passions and interests.
capncanuck1@reddit
There have been a couple moments in some of the recent-ish specials where I've genuinely been worried about the trio's health in a "oh fuck that's going to cause permanent damage that a younger presenter wouldnt have (as much of) an issue with" way, specifically the boats in the Vietnam special and when James hit the wall in the yellow evo.
I think it's important to realize that 1. Most of the bits have been done at this point, 1.5 their bodies cant hold up to the bits as well as they used to, 2. Traveling gets harder as you get older and unfortunately they're all on the north side of 50.
We should welcome the fact that they're retiring (kinda) when they want to, not when they have to.
fastheadcrab@reddit
They were decent but yours is definitely a very unpopular opinion because the viewership numbers were terrible and with the rise of internet car channels they really didn’t differentiate themselves. They were decently entertaining to car enthusiasts but never had the charisma or mass appeal of the original trio, even in GT form
Hence why BBC pulled the plug.
bnuts85@reddit
Glad I’m not the only one that likes the new trio on TG. They found their grove and I was really enjoying the last season. Really sucks Freddy and the crew member got hurt as bad as they did because I would have loved at least a few more seasons.
JJMcGee83@reddit
GT has had some questionable bits there too like the whole car made of meat episode. They were just starting to get their groove back by the S3 but then Amazon decided to only do road trips and the road trips are like frosting on cake, they only work for me if I have cake to put it on.
Alternative_Ask364@reddit
I found it very upsetting that Top Gear ended when it did because the last season of those 3 was in my opinion the best one. With the Grand Tour taking several years to get on its feet, we lost a lot of seasons to Top Gear that could have been fantastic.
TRS2917@reddit
Reformat the show and pair up various car YouTubers into tree teams and have them compete in various challenges while completing an exotic roadtrip. Trying to find 3 different people to replicate the chemistry and joy the format is a fool's errand, but there is a way to take the DNA of The Grand Tour and make it into something different and special.
phalanxs@reddit
Even Clarkson, Hammond, and May couldn't save this show from mediocre editing and the extremely lazy writing.
BTW calling it now, "One for the road" will feature one of those "unbeknownst to us, we set up camp for the night in the dark in an inconvienient place such as a road or ski slope and were woken up by locals going about their day in the morning" joke.
snapjenk@reddit
Bye
Internal-District992@reddit
Lets get James from Donut in there
markusalkemus66@reddit
The whole point of the show was to watch Clarkson, Hammond, and May do stuff together. This new version, like the version of Top Gear after the trio left, won't be as good. They'll either fall into the trap of trying to mirror the trio's personalities only to come off as a cheap imitation, or they go in a different direction and still fail. The magic of Top Gear and the Grand Tour after it was the trio's chemistry with each other.
t-poke@reddit
20 years ago, I started watching Top Gear for the cars. Now, I watch TGT for the trio. The cars are neat, but now I would watch them do anything together.
I really hope Hammond and May make a cameo appearance on Clarkson's Farm. Even if it's just to insult Jeremy and call him an orangutan.
Skreeethemindthief@reddit

dickmarchinko@reddit
People saying top gear failed with new hosts don't realize how good Chris and Freddie were. If they didn't have that obnoxious 3rd Paddy or whatever that could have been the start of another goat trio, until the accident of course.
But if they do it right, this could be great. If they do it like many versions of top gear, yes it will suck. Time will tell.
DjImagin@reddit
You’re telling 3 people to overcome an impossible bar.
If the chemistry isn’t off the charts by the midpoint of the first season, it will fail.
DubmyRUCA@reddit
This is fine. They were all unknowns at one point too, if Amazon finds some genuinely great people to take over, the brand continues which I think they would be happy to see happen. If it flops, they look irreplaceable(like they are) and everyone moves on but remembers their episodes fondly. Win win for everyone imo.
PalmTreeIsBestTree@reddit
Clarkson was not an unknown, at least in Britain.
Noobasdfjkl@reddit
Clarkson was absolutely unknown when he started top gear
abattlescar@reddit
James May wasn't exactly unknown either, he had been doing travelogues and what not for quite a while by the time he got picked up for TG
PalmTreeIsBestTree@reddit
Hammond had his Men and Motors gig on top of all the radio he did for years long before he got the top gear job as well. May even had a stint on old Top Gear too when Wilman was presenting on TV as well.

koopa00@reddit
Without them what's the point? Didn't we try this with Top Gear already? It's like watching Inside the NBA without the Chuck and Ernie.
Magma151@reddit
I personally am more optimistic. Top gear was abruptly upended and the trio left on bad terms with the bbc, took most of the off screen talent with them, and what followed was a desperate attempt to regain what was lost. This time the trio left on good terms and the crew presumably remains. The potential for a decent reboot is much higher.
TheAlphaCarb0n@reddit
Why would you bring that up right now???
NashBotchedWalking@reddit
Yeah but with TG they had to prove that car shows can be funny while being painfully politically correct. They stood no chance from the start.
hawksdiesel@reddit
aww man, i forgot about that.
Ok-Cardiologist302@reddit
The appeal for the original Top Gear to me was seeing all those exotic cars you'd never see driving and only at an auto show.
But now a days I can see all those cars on the streets or cars and coffees etc.
GStarOvercooked@reddit
I for one am glad that they will keep it running. Like everyone id prefer Clarkson, Hammond and May to keep going, but they were always going to retire at some point.
Maybe someone within Amazon has the nous to learn from other "New Top Gear" programs, and get hosts with some individuality, character, passion, and chemistry, and most importantly, not try to force anything.

There is absolutely no reason a travel show highlighting cars should not work. They need to keep fresh interesting ideas and get 3 people that genuinely entertain THEMSELVES. The best part of the grand tour and TG were when they seemed to genuinely be having a good time.
The rest have all been lacking to me is because right away you have the ex pro, the zany guy, and wild card.
Tidybloke@reddit
The whole show was based around those 3 guys, in particular Jeremy. It was the Jeremy Clarkson and his mates show, not a car show. That's why the Top Gear reboot never caught on, not even with someone like Chris Harris.
PassivePriest@reddit
Wow it’s like they don’t even know why Grand Tour exists and Top Gear doesnt
Potential-Ant-6320@reddit
Amazon should just make a new car show with all the ex doughnut people. Just give them a budget and get out of their way. Guaranteed they would do legendary goofy shit that would feel like top gear when it was white hot.
PurpEL@reddit
Throw Jensen Button, Nico Rosberg, and Shane Gillis as the new hosts and id watch. As long as Button relentlessly calls Nico Brittany.
sidekickman@reddit
they should just license and combine throttle house and savagegeese content and stream that mythbusters style lol

INSTA PASS. I literally jumped to this show from the BBC because of these guys, and I'll continue to watch Clarkson's Farm, Our Man in... etc. but the trio is the reason.
Confirmed_AM_EGINEER@reddit
And on that bombshell, it's time to end.
cjeff13@reddit
I would cast a vote for David Freiburger, Steve Dulcich, and Mike Finnegan
CMDR_omnicognate@reddit
The BBC tried this, it probably wont work unless it ends up being quite different, or they somehow get just the right people. they'd be wise to try to keep the show going in some different way, but then exactly what way to go is... tricky. there's a lot of car content on youtube that does from time to time feel top gear ish, and production values of a lot of these channels are honestly almost as good as the grand tour, just without the travel and crazy plot stuff like blowing up oil trucks or leaving a country via cargo plane ect.
Crazehen@reddit
Keep the format but change the name. You will never be able to fill the boots of these three, and using the name to ride on the coat tails of success for the new cast is not going to work. This is exactly why Top Gear post 2014, Top Gear USA, and Top Gear America ultimately failed. They weren't inherently bad shows, but neither format could live up to the name. It's the equivalent of taking a group of Nepo babies from the recoding industry and calling them The Beetles.
CookInKona@reddit
ugh, not again

bring back Adam, Rutledge, and Tanner. Clarkson, May, and Hammond were able to go out on a high note, let the American hosts do the same
cereal7802@reddit
Correction. Amazon will attempt to continue the show with new hosts. If it actually continues with different people is yet to be seen. They may only get a single season out of new people. They may not even make it that far. We will see how it goes.

As long as it’s not the fat dude who owns that garage in California and won’t shut the fuck up about how awesome of a storage facility he built.

I think he's gone on Ozempic because he's gotten quite skinny now. Compared to where he was.
DangerousPrune1989@reddit
Good for him anybody who lose his weight in no matter how they do it I’m happy for them, but he’s still an insufferable person. He is the arrogance of the car watches and coffee community. I’m in no way dismissing his storage facility for cars. It’s clearly very very thought out but from people who have met him, they say he’s exactly how you imagine him on TV.
Impressive-Potato@reddit
I agree, I can't stand him. His podcast interview with Tiff Needell popped up on my feed a the other day and I couldn't finish it. He kept interrupting Tiff and wouldn't let him finish his stories. It was so awkward.
grannyshifter35@reddit
Yeah, how’d that work out for top gear?
SmashThompson@reddit
The last top gear hosts and content they put out was better than season 1 and 2 of the grand tour so I welcome any new hosts. Just more good tv to watch Once they find the groove. Yall gotta admit grand tour was rough at first to. It was too much like the last seasons of top gear. Terribly written and fake
AIL97@reddit
At least change the name and pretend its a new series.
reberman8@reddit

WCland@reddit
It's been frequently said that it's difficult to match the chemistry of the original trio. I was listening to the Smartless podcast, hosted by Will Arnett, Jason Bateman, and Sean Hayes, who have great chemistry. They were talking about how they've been friends for 20 years, so it was relatively easy to jump into hosting the Smartless podcast. And that got me thinking they would be pretty amazing hosts from a chemistry standpoint for Grand Tour. Couple of issues though. One is that Arnett is probably the only actual car guy in the group, though Hayes does a credible job on the Land Rover Defender ad reads. Second is that Bateman in particular is very busy with directing/acting projects. Still, if they could take two weeks out of other projects to film a Grand Tour, I think it would be really fun.
Apolllo69@reddit
Only people I will actually consider are the throttle house guys.
James_Vowles@reddit
Nobody is watching that
Cost_Additional@reddit
Throw Chris Harris a bag of money and start filming
calculating_hello@reddit
Can understand as they age out but will be hard to replicate their chemistry, but is essentially the only car show left so will keep watching.
Nikiaf@reddit
This seems like a bad idea. The format really wasn’t the strong point of TGT since the BBC owned a lot of the rights to the various segments. It never was about the show itself, it was all about the trio. If you take them out, you no longer have a show.
Two_Shekels@reddit
It’s going to be utter shite
SNAiLtrademark@reddit
Are you happier with no car shows?
ycnz@reddit
The Grand Tour was already a bit shit with their forced new format. We only watched for the hosts, but it was never quite as special. New hosts and new format, is a match made in a dumpster fire.
IIYogiII@reddit
For the new hosts, I’d love to see Jethrow Bovingdon, Chris Harris and Jason Cammisa.

TheMannX@reddit
Chris Evans was awful, but the Harris-LeBlanc-Reid trio didn't work half bad to me. Not Clarkson, Hammond and May but you could do a damn sight worse.
KingMario05@reddit
Yes, but pressure to be CHM led to Neo TG overlooking safety and taste regulations. That lead to not only the Cenotaph stunt, but also Freddie Flitoff's horrific crash and another long hiatus. Hope Amazon just lets the new lads be... well, the new lads.

Original Top Gear Uk…greatest show on tv. Top Gear UK with other hosts was mediocre at best. Top Gear US….worst show in tv. The show is all about the hosts. This is guaranteed to be a royal flop
TheMannX@reddit
Top Gear USA wasn't that bad once they stopped ripping off the UK version, the Adam-Rutledge-Tanner trio got to know one another's strengths and weaknesses and they start doing their own thing. Their Big Rig episode was better than the Top Gear UK one if you ask me.
donaldsw2ls@reddit
They need 3 or 4 guys with real chemistry. Their friendship is what made it work. 3 guys who are good friends make a party start. We don't need a "look at us and how funny we are" group. Just a natural friendship with the un forced funny moments.
Is there a group of guys/girls who have this already?

I don't think Amazon gets that the whole draw of the grand tour was the trio.

bishopredline@reddit
Yeah because the work so well the last time that was tried. I'd like to see a good car review show with less emphasis on the grand trips
JJMcGee83@reddit
Honestly unless they are going back to the tent I kinda don't care. The appeal of the "specials" to me was that it was the only way I could see Clackson, Hammond and May together again. I've always prefered their in the studio stuff to the specials; the specials were very enjoyable but they work as the frosting on a cake for me, when it's just frosting I'm not too interested.
ExtruDR@reddit
At this point it seems that the Top Gear formula has run it's course.
This isn't a bad thing. We got many, many seasons of great shows from the original cast. Saw them mature, saw the nature of the show evolve and probably reach it's natural conclusion.
We then saw what happened after, with the Grand Tour. Epic adventures with these, otherwise mature and weathered guys. People and relationships change, the chemistry can's be reproduced and even if it could, it would hit differently.
We also saw MANY Top Gear spin-offs, which were all pretty thoroughly inferior (I watched all of them, including the Russian ones).
MOST IMPORTANTLY, we saw what Top Gear's influence was. At least a full generation, if not two, of YouTube car reviewers and content creators. They took what they grew up with and learned and made their versions of it.
I'm not saying that anything can top the "peak" Top Gear years, but these were also novel things at the time and a somewhat special time in terms of the media and auto industries which I don't think will happen again.
Personally, I enjoy Clarkson's Farm, even though I could care less about farming, and Jeremy's not all that appealing either, but the way that show is put together and the way the narrative and the various characters are presented makes it quite good.

DeLoreanAirlines@reddit

dod1138@reddit
Jimmy Broadbent, Freddie Tavarish and Ben Collins!
TheDrunkenMatador@reddit
When the Clarkson/Hammond/May trio was formed, they already had the foundations needed. All three were bona fide car enthusiasts, they already had a good working relationship, and they all had on-camera/mic media experience. All three of those things are key. The issues with trying to implement such a formula with hosts who don’t have that relationship already has been discussed ad nauseam, but that third thing matters too, and it’s why trying to pull drivers for a show isn’t likely to work, even ones with natural charisma. “Loose script” shows like this rely heavily on the presenters mixing script acting and improv acting skills with genuine chemistry.
Jay_Diamond_WWE@reddit
Could work if you grab guys that the hosts like. YouTubers like Tyler Hoover, Zack klapman, Matt Farah, Ed bolian, etc. They need name recognition already. No more racecar drivers or washed up celebrities.

Out of the Reboot Top gear as someone from the UK the only presenters that I felt worked were Chris Harris & Paddy McGuinness, they both had experience, down to earth without being bland & humour with variation plus Chris had a genuine passion for cars & their intricacies
Freddie Flintoff I never warmed to at all he felt a bit too Laddish & sky panel show, actually one of the reasons I didn't watch it very much.
Rory & Matt were good but not right for Top Gear.
The first series of the reboot was a complete mess.
For me they never got it right with the Top Gear reboot but they were close ( Minus Freddie )
For this they should just screen test as many people as possible & do pilot episodes to a test screening audience.
Remember the first series of the Clarkson Top Gear had a different presenter ( Jason Dawes ) but they decided to go into a different direction & brought in James May.
hawksdiesel@reddit

Oldachrome1107@reddit
I think the idea of a new car-centric adventure show is a good idea, but they are going to have to change the name. I liked most of the hosts on Top Gear but the backlash from Clarkson Trufans poisoned it for so many people that it was never going to be as successful.
I mean Amazon has so much money that an adventure show with good production values and three likable hosts that have decent chemistry will be successful. Calling it the Grand Tour will just turn hardcore fans off.
Naytosan@reddit

Rillist@reddit
Make it a dream team. Tom, James from TH for the down to earth. Mark from SG and Brian from RCR for sarcasm and cynicism and wit sprinkled from a place of nerdiness. Camissa just needs to be there as he's arguably the perfect combination of everything from huge production, his ongoing excel file of everything hes ever driven and his humour.
The biggest hurdle will be to not make it like the old show and let the presenters run the show. That was the magic of TG/TGT under the big 3.

Just cancel it and take the budget to give us a lot of seasons of Clarkson's Farm and James May's travel show.
PM_BBW_Cleavage@reddit
The suits don’t understand that it’s not the cars, or the challenges. It’s the boys, their camaraderie, their friendship, and their needling that makes the show what it is. The cars and all that is noise, most of us would watch them talk about dowel rods for 45 minutes.
The replacement Top Gears all tried to replicate TG with 3 dudes just thrown together doing challenges, that’s not the show.
Don’t hire 3 separate people. Hire a group, and let them build chemistry together and with the audience.
Use the next few series as screen tests for your top choices, and go with the most connected ones. Not the most accomplished, or best driver. Get 3 friends who geek about cars, and love each other and it’ll be a success.
Few_Highlight1114@reddit
Oh, ive seen this one before
Conspicuous_Ruse@reddit
I'm OK with this if they can find the right hosts.
Not only are the OG 3 good together, their cheeky British mannerisms are hilarious in their own right.
Host chemistry and the hosts ability to make up very random metaphors and bumble on about stuff on the spot are both requirements. One without the other doesn't cut it.
I think some of the TG hosts that came after these guys were OK together but they just couldn't come up with the hilarious metaphors and banter the original 3 were so good at.

GreatOdinsRaven_@reddit
Dont. Just don't
detectivescarn@reddit
Not opposed to the show continuing with new people. Imo, Thomas and James at Throttle House have proven that shows in the spirit of classic Top Gear can work as long as the presenters have chemistry. That being said, why the GT works as currently presented, is that we have had years of history with these guys. They don’t need to spend too much time explaining themselves, we already know their quirks and whatnot. We know Clarkson is going to pick the powerful car. May will use logic, and be methodical. Hammond is a closeted American.
If they want to use new hosts we need more of a Top Gear/original GT where we can get to know them through car tests, smaller trips, and challenges.
