Adult driving lessons

I'm 29 and haven't learnt to drive and it's really starting to cause me issues. I have major issues with anxiety and panic attacks so would need a driver who is good with that side of it. I have built up driving in my mind so it is going to take me a while to get rid of that anxiety whilst driving.
Any recommendations of instructors people have used in a similar spot to me would be great.
Thank you

Hey OP, as someone who coaches on track, and is in the final stage of their ADI (driving instructor qualification), I’d advise at least giving a manual a go.
If you ever go on holiday where an automatic car might not be readily available to rent, it might limit your options!
With the right instructor, you might just surprise yourself and beat the anxiety 💪🏻 Best of luck.

Hope you find the right instructor for you. My instructor was nice but he’d shout a lot, if I took the wrong turn for example… nearly cried on two occasions. 🥲 held back those tears like a champ.

Stay clear of my driving instructor. I remember saying left or right and looked over to see he was flat out snoring 😴 in the passenger seat. I passed manual, but drive automatic. It’s the lazy way, but the easy way to drive

Yikes! Who was your instructor?!
And yeah at the end of the day if it gets people around that's all we are really looking for!

I think it might of been one of the big chains. He also kept pulling the car over and spent most of my lesson hearing about his ten pin bowling 🎳 nights out 😂
It comes as no surprise, that I never passed first time 😎

Hi OP, well done for taking this huge step! I’ve recently passed at 28 and I went with an automatic driving school (PACE) and a female instructor. Both of those elements made it so much easier for me to pass as I felt more comfortable with a female and there is less to think about when driving an automatic. I’d suggest mentioning your anxiety when you enquire so that they can let you know if they can tailor lessons to help you (this may be offering regular breaks or explaining what manoeuvre/area you’re going to do at the start of the lessons etc). Generally, lessons are expensive and instructors are also in demand so you may not get a lesson straight away. Overall, there will be times you feel like giving up, but stick at it and you will feel so proud of yourself and relieved when you do pass. Good luck!

My partner actually drives automatic currently so that might make sense then I can also go on his insurance and car.
Thank you for your recommendation, I'll look into PACE!
It is so expensive , another reason why I wish I had passed when I was younger and had more disposable money! 😭

Why don’t you get learners insurance on your partners car, it’ll give you some cheap driving experience.

I probably will, but would like an instructor to teach me the basics again first as I haven't gotten behind the wheel since I was about 17!

Good luck 🤞

I would highly recommend Travis School of Motoring. I found him after I had a really negative experience with another instructor who was loud, condescending and destroyed my confidence. James built it back up again. He is really calm and patient. He’s great.

He’s on YouTube so you can check him out beforehand to see if you like him.

I recently passed in an automatic, took 100 hours of lessons (60 of those in a manual, waste of time) and three tests but got there in the end. I went through multiple instructors. The last one I had was good, his name is Aahil through Drive Johnsons. All their other instructors weren’t very good at all.

My wife used this instructor who is independent while she was in her 30s, he was great:
