Ik this post is incelcore but I do really despise the trend of sniveling 100lb skinny fat limpwristed nerds being the usual main charachter in recent shows
True story. One time I got told explicitly I needed to use an /s at the end of my comment, and when I refused also, I got shouted down by like 5 different people (alts?) for being ableist
I think that's less a consequence of people not being able to recognize humor and more that there are so many out and proud lunatics on this site, and tbh the Internet in general that there's a fifty fifty shot of any given shit take being completely sincere. And Elon stans are exceptionally delusional lol
Isn’t part of the fun with sarcasm that not everyone gets it and it can be misunderstood? I feel like indicating sarcasm as sarcasm goes against the spirit of it
It's easier to do sarcasm in person because of tone and non-verbal cues, sometimes it doesn't translate to text. But I agree, the whole idea behind sarcasm is that it's implied and not spelled out. So explicitly pointing it out ruins it.
Yeah I made a don't trust everything you see on the internet joke on r/interestingasfuck and instantly got labeled as being on the fast track to fascism which is crazy honestly
I feel like once you hit 1 billion dollars, you’re high value regardless of it you look like a scrotum. High value is a pretty nebulous term, but billionaires are definitely in that category, whatever it is.
Traditional men in fiction are big and heroic and not super relatable. Traditional women in fiction are objects and plot devices. I think this trend is informed by that
I would watch left cause cute girl, I watch right cause it’s a loser guy who overcame his social anxiety and became a better person and im all for that
Like I said on the other 'le male self insert' post a few days ago, having a reasonable male self insert isn't that bad. The male self insert example for this one is definitely a spineless wimp but has decent enough social skills with what I'll call reasonably healthy relationships.
Having a more toned down flawed self insert is better than the 'I'll write myself as a based gigachad who's perfect in every way'. I'd rather read about the spineless wimp that actually has a personality and is a 'realistic' character than some writer projecting their insecurities and lack of writing skills into their story.
Yea but it all goes to shit for me when they make the guy so utterly pathetic that it becomes painful to watch. What do you mean it takes you 100 chapters to become comfortable enough to hold hands with a girl? What do you mean you're not able to hold a basic conversation with a person of opposite sex without getting an anxiety attack?
You proved my point. You described the most realistic incel self insert one could make. If you added some mental issues of varying degrees and some not-so-moderate political views, then it's a spot on 4chan self insert. At that point, the anime English dub should be done Patrick Bateman or Ryan Gosling because he's literally me.
I thought your point was that moderate self insert characters are not so bad, because its more interesting to follow a flawed character who improves than a gigachad who is amazing in every way?
I said that i agree with you in theory, its just that these self insert characters are often not reasonable, they are bottom of the barrel incels with unrealesticly low social skills and zero redeeming qualities, thus making me unable to enjoy the story.
Left girl has elaborate dress, probably a rich Isekai royalty. Right guy is a mundane office wagecuck. It's just different genre, you should pick some of the Isekai guys with elaborate costumes too.
Yeah true, its bait. Theres so many edgelords in isekai anime/s. This one is just being modest and wants to better themselves through fiction. The rest just do shortcuts.
Literally, the idea that this shit is indicative of the masculine urge to improve is deranged. The appeal of isekai bullshit is that you can keep being your unwashed NEET self and inexplicably develop a harem of beautiful women by virtue of some intrinsic trait.
The reason the MCs of these series are generic because they doesn't matter as a character, they're just a vessel for the audience's power fantasy. If they were attractive or strong or confident or meaningfully talented, the guys who consume this slop wouldn't be able to relate to them and may actually develop an impetus to grow and change as people.
Men imagine cool things just because they arr cool. We must reject this idea that we do it because we wish things were different.
A giant robot. A massive AOE attack that kills a fake god. Running at the speed of lightning to save a loved one. These are cool, and sinply are.
Men should be able to be left alone and enjoy thee joy of simply thinking of nothing while also thinking of cool things.
Have you ever been asked by your Girlfriend or wife what you are thinking? And you were just looking into space thinking of pulling a rope real hard, that you kinda tensed up? Well, it means nothing. So you say "nothing".
Thats what power fantasies are for me, nothing, but also, that dumb bundle of muscles calling the alien fuck "one ugly motherfucker" is kinda cool. Ya feel me?
That's just your experience, because you are a well adjusted person. But unfortunately most of the target audience actually self insert. That is made painfully obvious by the backstory of these characters (a complete loser who gets bullied suddenly becomes mega powerful for no reason and gets a harem). If it was truly just about seeing cool shit happen, whats the point of making the MC originally be a loser and socially inept?
Enjoying these shows doesn't automatically make you one of those people true, but the main target audience still is unwashed losers who want to self insert.
yes, Overlord is an isekai... a businessman that spent all his time and money on a game gets transported into a new world where he is the strongest person and everybody in his giant (and I mean GIANT) castle worships him like a God.
I know that, I saw overlord. I’m asking if the character would be considered generic, as he is not good looking being a liche, and doesn’t seem interested in any romantic interaction, seeing everyone in this world as disposable pawns
very few isekai MCs pursue romantic interaction. They often have a harem to choose from but never really do. And they are/act dense so they don't have to deal with that.
I wouldn't say he sees anyone as his disposable pawn (except for the minions that he personally sPAWNs). He is very resourceful and treats every resource and acquaintance with utmost care/respect. For he is a businessman first and an overlord second.
I don't think he is generic, but he is written to be really relatable so that he can be a self insert. It's still a male fantasy anime.
"OMG CARDBOARD-SAMA, YOU SAID I SHOULDN'T BE BURNED ALIVE FOR NO REASON, SAID HI TO ME TWICE AND ONLY TRIED TO RAPE ME THRICE, THIS AND YOU BEING SO POWERFUL MAKES ME LOVE YOU"
A lot of these "isekai slop" (and also general fantasy slop as I feel the reincarnation element is losing traction nowadays) start with a core story arc of the mc having to go through trials of wit, self improvement, physical pain etc. to gain their advantage.
Often it's the whole hook for the story, think of some cliche titles:
"I had to die gruesomely 200 times before I unlocked my cheat ability"
"Starting a new life as a weak lvl 1 monster"
"Everyone thought my powers were weak until I developed it's hidden ability"
"After being banished from the kingdom I practiced magic to get my revenge"
"God accidentally tortured me for 50 years so I got a cheat power as an apology"
And the mc is often the smartest, being able to figure out how best to use his abilities, because thats how the reader would want to feel going into a new world.
Albeit in a lot of cases this is a short segment, it can give the reader the (cheap) feeling that they deserve to be overpowered because they worked for it.
(Also there are the stories where the gimmick is that they have to/want to restrict/hide their powers which go more into the self control and gentlemanliness side so yeah)
So while I'm not sure about the female fantasy part, the male one does in general include the act of growing into character (and the stories that entirely skip this step feel especially cheap)
And yet they all go back to the "cheat", "OP" and whatever other isekai trash trope ou can think about. That's not growth, that's a "get rich quick scheme" but made into a power fantasy. Plus most of the time, those "trials" early on are just bait for revenge plotlines trash.
Really, in the "trash isekai" enviroment you have two archetypes
1) Edgy revenge stuff (Shield Eho type things) where the early story is that, the character being marginalized for some reason and quickly turning that into a powerscaling thing of some kind.
2) For some stupid reason the character has an unfair advantage handed to them either from the beginning OR after grinding something silly.
The second option here is mostly set in the context of boring job and/or videogame logic, not actual self-improvement which requires discipline and effort.
It's easy to bring this into the topic of gym and stuff like that, but it's not even just that.
Studying itself requires effort and focus, not just doing mindlessly the same thing over and over.
The same applies to learning a skill. "Discipline" doesn't mean only to do something all the time in a set pattern without giving in to the desire to take it slow, but rather it means to do it with focus and intent. That's why so many eventually give up on things like these as well: they make it a habit, but not put in the will to improve.
Exactly, it's still all just powerfantasies after this first part is over. It's not there for it to be a good plotline or clever writing, it's just the cheapest way to arrive at the feeling of progress/accomplisment.
Instead of having to bury yourself into the story and read hundresds of chapters of one piece in order to see Luffy take a single step towards his dream you can just rush through a single chapter and end up powerful.
(and also general fantasy slop as I feel the reincarnation element is losing traction nowadays)
TBH part of the problem with isekai is that most of them don't need to be isekai. They never do anything interesting with the isekai. The character is just a generic dude who instantly adapts to living in a fantasy world and forgets all their knowledge about modern society other than the occasional pop culture reference. Their abilities always come from some gimmick that is given to them in fantasyland, rather than actually being tied to them being from the modern world.
The few actually good isekai out there are the ones that actually let the protagonist do something interesting with their modern knowledge, Ascendance of a Bookworm is the example that comes to mind.
I agree, thats why I felt it was fair to somewhat talk about both genres at the same time.
And yeah, it's generally good writing when the protag still has connections to the real world via information(memories) or sometimes modern items via shop/creation powers.
Yeah - the character's aren't bland because the "male fantasy" is "growing into becoming powerful". The characters are bland so that as many people as possible can project themselves onto said self-insert character.
Isn't most isekai just average men with skills that are considered unspectacular in our world but dropped into a reality tailored so that their mediocrity suddenly makes them an alpha male?
It's not even their mediocrity (or knowledge of the modern world, that might actually be interesting, god forbid) that makes them popular - it's pretty much always some random-ass ability they're given as part of reincarnating.
How dare you! Suginorikokorokami also known by his title "The black ripper" EARNED the respect and love of these nine women and single large breasted child.
And yes, his dismal outlook on life, offensively neutral personality and utter lack of redeeming qualities (besides being nice ofc, easily the most rarest quality EVER) would make him the ideal wielder for the Bone blade of infinite demon dragon summoning so don't even suggest otherwise
On the contrary, a lot of shonen romcom, harem or even drama manga come with the premise of a 10/10 girl magically dropping from the sky, for some reason becoming the personal lifecoach, therapist and eventual lover or close one to some random unattractive guy who was in personal growth dead end.
Of course, it will appeal to the many guys who can self-project into that kind of person and that's why it's so common and popular in manga, but that's not a good message.
I liked that in Kaguya-sama, the male MC actually set his own goals and did everything by himself to become a better person, that was refreshing.
My self insert power fantasies are usually just me NTR-ing people who would send me unsolicited pics, get 1000 views per 3 days on AO3 and send the link to them. Im sick of being a toy.
All that bullcrap about high and low value people, looksmaxxing, social hierarchy and dating scene is such a huge circus. The best is to not engage and just watch the dumpster fire.
If you want to consider bullying turn bullying friend(?) group then sure. Though he is artistically talented, hes considered to be a spineless loser generally through it all
Her sister is there because she fucking loves the romance between him and nagatoro. She also heard a lot about him from her sister, so of course she's curious
So there's only one girl all up on him, the others are just supporting him
These self inserts aren’t considered very “high value.” The only real consistent thing among them is that they’re nice and usually respectful about boundaries.
Every generic isekai and romcom for example, they’re all generic Japanese high school boys. Most of them aren’t too tall either (Senpai for example is taller than most the girls but isn’t crazy tall). The only exception I can think of is from Dress Up Darling, where the guy is noticeably tall and seems well-built too, but again, super nice and respectable.
And even ones where the MC isn’t nice, like Quintessential Quintuplets, he still respects boundaries and doesn’t seriously consider the women to be romantically interested in him unless it’s the last option.
That’s also pretty consistent with these types, their harems aren’t made on them putting effort into it, it just “happens.” And the women are always the ones attaching themselves to the MC. It shows that average reader wants the woman irl to put in all the effort. If you want to blame that on laziness, or fear of rejection, or whatever, but that’s just what I’ve noticed.
I mean, if we want to be serious about this, "female self-insert" used as example is more of a female gaze thing rather than male. It's not made to appeal to horny teenagers and dudes in general.
For the same reason, the usual male self-insert is unlikely to be made with a female gaze in mind.
Yes the yare written as eventually being cool or whatever, but they still don't push those features that are more typical of an "hot guy" written explicitely "for women by women".
I mean, that's kinda the point. They are *self*-inserts, not made to be object of desire of IRL people of the opposite sex.
Women tend to think of themselves as more important than men tend to. Plus women care more about status than men. Men basically just wanna fuck the girl next door
You could say the main character of The Apothecary Diaries does both. She is introduced and carries herself as a poor, nasty skinned, mid/ugly recluse with an autistic interest in poisons.
To transition her into the shoujo romance plot her background had to get reversed: She's actually a consorts child who's so excessively pretty she has to cover herself with dirt or else she'd be too pretty (apparently her scars disappear too), her being physically undeveloped is a bonus because the main guy likes children, her special interest in poison and drugs is because she has plans and contingencies for the exact scenario she has lucked into as the recluse now has the social skills to masterfully manipulate her way to the top of a political intrigue series.
I'm ranting because I just wanted a Columbo series with a unique setting and instead I got a romance series that ignores the initial premise of the series.
I don't watch enough anime. Don't those basic AF self inserts eventually grow and become more badass/cool by the end or something? Basically an "every man" that goes through the heros journey and changes to be more fleshed out. Wouldn't that be the whole point?
The male self insert also gets all the girls just because "he's nice" and if it is a battle focused series has no magic or conventional power but is actually the strongest
I've watched and read a lot of shoujo, self insert girls are usually just as bland as the guys. 99% of them are meek and being bullied in some way, and most of them have very basic designs
Read a booktok or hardcore harlequin romance book. Meaning, the kind of books that are popular with girls. The basic plot’s main character usually is a normal day-to-day girl, just like in male fantasies.
Genuinely baffled at the original post because as far as I knew the stereotypes had always been the opposite, with female self inserts being what you described and male self inserts starting off basic and becoming "high-value" through perseverance
why is then it was so popular? a lot of shoujo on the website that i use is 9.7-9.8 only because heroes look pretty.
not to be "women☕️" guy but i think some time ago it put much more effort into looks than in substance
not that male isekai was better, it mistly don't even have good art
Not true ackschually,
I don't know much about female anime self inserts but with movies and books/fanfics, the girl protag is mostly described as very relatable and a sorta blank canvas. Best example is 50 shades of grey girl, yea dakota johnson is kinda hot but she has no outstanding style or characteristics and is just a "basic girl".
I haven't seen many girl-protag-romance anime but in the few I've seen, the girl is also made out to be super relatable. And clumsy. God they always make the girls so clumsy. Every medium be it anime film book whatever they are always clumsy ALL. THE FUCKING. TIME. Like yea we get it she's so relatable and quirky fuck me man be creative for once! And then it's said men write women always the same, female authors are not better! Maybe they would be more creative but I honestly believe that's simply what the audience wants to see so I can't really blame them. We as a society must change.
Stop clumsy girls.
anyways just whip out the cat already
Have you seen any superhero movie, any action movie, read any book with a hardened warrior as a main character? Men do want to self-insert as attractive badass men.
Young men expect or wish for great things without actually needing to put in any effort into their appearance. Young women are often expected to put great effort into their appearance with makeup/outfits/etc.
In this case, the male fantasy is to be irresistible even when you don't put any effort in, and the female is to look beautiful with as little effort as possible. Both are power fantasies revolving around effort, but male fantasies appear more to do with changing others perception magically, while female power fantasy is more to do with becoming an immortal self who others adore.
Woman are meant to be able to show off their beauty more to find a stable sane guy, but a man is supposed to show how reliable they are for a family. Most men just aren't as attractive by nature as woman(me as well). Heavy body hair, sweating more, decent chance of not having a standard "deep manly voice", ect. Many just want to draw their perception of themselves how they see it and make them more interesting personality wise. (Also none of this means you have to be with the opposite sex or that men can't be attractive at all.)
Meanwhile, Tolkien's self insert, Faramir, is a noble knight who refuses the ring and allow Frodo and Sam to go in there way. Unlike in the movies, where he is kindof a dick.
Don't worry, the same thing exists for the other side. Although the women-oriented ones tend to value being socially overpowered (noble status/love interest is like CEO or something) instead of physical power.
Male korean manwha writers rising from nobody to some important figure in a construction/real estate company for the 56th time: "I don't have such a weakness."

Because "self-inserting" is about appealing to a personal fantasy.
Men fantasize about growing into becoming powerful, intelligent, wise, and respected.
Women fantasize about being those things without having to grow into them.
The difference is how one views their own initial potential, 🍺 want to become better, ☕️ want the idea of "best" to be dropped to their level.

If they were attractive or strong or confident or meaningfully talented, the guys who consume this slop wouldn't be able to relate to them and may actually develop an impetus to grow and change as people.
morbnowhere@reddit
Wrong.
Ya feel me?
IliceonTrade@reddit
That's just your experience, because you are a well adjusted person. But unfortunately most of the target audience actually self insert. That is made painfully obvious by the backstory of these characters (a complete loser who gets bullied suddenly becomes mega powerful for no reason and gets a harem). If it was truly just about seeing cool shit happen, whats the point of making the MC originally be a loser and socially inept?
Enjoying these shows doesn't automatically make you one of those people true, but the main target audience still is unwashed losers who want to self insert.
Master-Drake@reddit
Would you consider Overlord to be in this category ?
TheDuckkingM@reddit
yes, Overlord is an isekai... a businessman that spent all his time and money on a game gets transported into a new world where he is the strongest person and everybody in his giant (and I mean GIANT) castle worships him like a God.
Master-Drake@reddit
I know that, I saw overlord. I’m asking if the character would be considered generic, as he is not good looking being a liche, and doesn’t seem interested in any romantic interaction, seeing everyone in this world as disposable pawns
TheDuckkingM@reddit
very few isekai MCs pursue romantic interaction.
KuTUzOvV@reddit
"OMG CARDBOARD-SAMA, YOU SAID I SHOULDN'T BE BURNED ALIVE FOR NO REASON, SAID HI TO ME TWICE AND ONLY TRIED TO RAPE ME THRICE, THIS AND YOU BEING SO POWERFUL MAKES ME LOVE YOU"
-Least deranged Isekai slop
One_snek_@reddit
BINGO
No, what would happen is that Isekai slop would lose audience
EnchantedSpider@reddit
Hyperversum@reddit
EnchantedSpider@reddit
Exactly, it's still all just powerfantasies after this first part is over. It's not there for it to be a good plotline or clever writing, it's just the cheapest way to arrive at the feeling of progress/accomplisment.
Instead of having to bury yourself into the story and read hundresds of chapters of one piece in order to see Luffy take a single step towards his dream you can just rush through a single chapter and end up powerful.
But people reading it (me) eat this shit up.
ArchmageIlmryn@reddit
TBH part of the problem with isekai is that most of them don't need to be isekai. They never do anything interesting with the isekai. The character is just a generic dude who instantly adapts to living in a fantasy world and forgets all their knowledge about modern society other than the occasional pop culture reference. Their abilities always come from some gimmick that is given to them in fantasyland, rather than actually being tied to them being from the modern world.
The few actually good isekai out there are the ones that actually let the protagonist do something interesting with their modern knowledge, Ascendance of a Bookworm is the example that comes to mind.
EnchantedSpider@reddit
I agree, thats why I felt it was fair to somewhat talk about both genres at the same time.
And yeah, it's generally good writing when the protag still has connections to the real world via information(memories) or sometimes modern items via shop/creation powers.
ArchmageIlmryn@reddit
Yeah - the character's aren't bland because the "male fantasy" is "growing into becoming powerful". The characters are bland so that as many people as possible can project themselves onto said self-insert character.
Ok_WaterStarBoy3@reddit
Yeah the whole point is the dudes having everything handed to them and being loved just by being themselves (a boring lame dumbass pervert)
ambermage@reddit
Soooooo 🍺 becoming ☕️?
No, twinks are already too powerful.
The universe can't handle their strength in greater numbers.
Formorri@reddit
Isn't most isekai just average men with skills that are considered unspectacular in our world but dropped into a reality tailored so that their mediocrity suddenly makes them an alpha male?
ArchmageIlmryn@reddit
It's not even their mediocrity (or knowledge of the modern world, that might actually be interesting, god forbid) that makes them popular - it's pretty much always some random-ass ability they're given as part of reincarnating.
Solcaerev@reddit
How dare you! Suginorikokorokami also known by his title "The black ripper" EARNED the respect and love of these nine women and single large breasted child.
And yes, his dismal outlook on life, offensively neutral personality and utter lack of redeeming qualities (besides being nice ofc, easily the most rarest quality EVER) would make him the ideal wielder for the Bone blade of infinite demon dragon summoning so don't even suggest otherwise
TheAskald@reddit
On the contrary, a lot of shonen romcom, harem or even drama manga come with the premise of a 10/10 girl magically dropping from the sky, for some reason becoming the personal lifecoach, therapist and eventual lover or close one to some random unattractive guy who was in personal growth dead end.
Of course, it will appeal to the many guys who can self-project into that kind of person and that's why it's so common and popular in manga, but that's not a good message.
I liked that in Kaguya-sama, the male MC actually set his own goals and did everything by himself to become a better person, that was refreshing.
mistress-vivian7@reddit

I wasn't even talking about the bullies, I was thinking about Nagatoro, his Senpai from the art club, and the Senpai's sister.
Garrais02@reddit
His senpai is on him because she's his guide.
Her sister is there because she fucking loves the romance between him and nagatoro. She also heard a lot about him from her sister, so of course she's curious

GillysDaddy@reddit
And then there's Kazuma, who dropkicks a woman, makes a Goddess cry and has multiple cases of sexual harassment against him.

Hyperversum@reddit
I mean, if we want to be serious about this, "female self-insert" used as example is more of a female gaze thing rather than male. It's not made to appeal to horny teenagers and dudes in general.
For the same reason, the usual male self-insert is unlikely to be made with a female gaze in mind.
Yes the yare written as eventually being cool or whatever, but they still don't push those features that are more typical of an "hot guy" written explicitely "for women by women".
I mean, that's kinda the point. They are *self*-inserts, not made to be object of desire of IRL people of the opposite sex.
ponygobyebye@reddit
Another example is Sakurai from Uzaki-chan: tall, sporty and well built, just a bit introverted.
Also Tadano from Komi-san, who had to act like a normie for years to nerf himself and prevent him from rizzing up everyone in a 100km radius.
Dominationartz@reddit
Ironically enough the MC of Nagatoro-Senpai had to put quite a lot of effort into their relationship.

CPC1445@reddit
I don't watch enough anime. Don't those basic AF self inserts eventually grow and become more badass/cool by the end or something? Basically an "every man" that goes through the heros journey and changes to be more fleshed out. Wouldn't that be the whole point?

Not true ackschually, I don't know much about female anime self inserts but with movies and books/fanfics, the girl protag is mostly described as very relatable and a sorta blank canvas.
