Did this actually work or was it impractical?

Considering how active the french paratroopers were in the 50's I would say it's okay. You could shoot it with the gun still attached but it was made to shoot and scoot puns intended

It is only meant to be a transporter. The gun is not meant to be fired in this position

Quiet you. It’s an anti tank scooter of course it can fire!
Let a man dream!

Yeah! Let a scooter dream!

It'll definitely be up in the clouds one way if that fires

The fact these were air dropped in makes this comment even better lol

It's a recoiless rifle and it could have been fired from the moped but a 150cc engine on 10 inch wheels loaded with a gun, amunitions and 2 passengers wouldn't be very effective on a battlefield.

Its design brief was that it and a second scooter (carrying the ammo) would travel in pairs and unship the recoilless rifle before firing, but it could be carried loaded and fired from the scooter while in motion.
Imagine being the poor bastard that survived being taken down by one of these. "Vat vas it zat disabled ze truck, Hans?"
"It vas ein Vespa!"
