I watched Howard The Duck this weekend for the first time in years...

How was this movie rated PG? Do animatronic duck boobies not count?
Also, it's as terrible as I remembered it.
Reasonable-Wave8093@reddit
Certified dud and i saw it as a kid too.

Who knew Dr. Jennings was just as creepy in real life?
jinsaku@reddit
So many great Jeffrey Jones performances are now so problematic to watch.
Chadmartigan@reddit
That's too bad because Mom & Dad Save the World is more relevant than ever.
TemporaryBuilding395@reddit
Debating whether or not to Google...

Yep. CP and soliciting a minor.

I just learned about this but somehow I'm not surprised.

When he said Be-ver-lyyyyyyyy
I felt that.
I fucking love this movie.

The 'How Did This Get Made' podcast has an excellent episode for Howard the Duck...
highly recommend :)

The problem with “How Did This Get Made” is that you need to have seen the film, preferably recently. I lucked out on “Howard the Duck”. I’d just seen the film when I found the podcast. The film is god-awful. The podcast is hilarious.
BlackPhoenix1981@reddit
Never knew about this podcast. Definitely going to check this one out!
rougekhmero@reddit
Oh man I haven't listened in years but it's absolutely great
GeetarEnthusiast85@reddit (OP)
I'll try to check it out
Feisty_Mouse6919@reddit
Please do, you won't regret it... but be forewarned... extremely NSFW content! It's great.
Feisty_Mouse6919@reddit
They address the duck boobies...
Lucinda_Jane@reddit
Why does she have breasts? Is she a mammal?
BlueSnaggleTooth359@reddit
Where they come from you don't HAVE to be a mammal!
Internal_Craft_3513@reddit
Haha so happy that this movie is making a comeback!!! Sooo bad but so good and really embodies the time… Time for the garbage pail kids!
mlo9109@reddit
Standards were different back then. Most of the shit we watched growing up would never fly today, even "kid" movies. Either they'd be not woke enough (ex. Star Wars, based on the current remakes) or "too woke" (ex. Captain Planet, I already hear the podcast bros bitching in November when the new one comes out). Rewatching old Disney movies when you're old enough to understand the hidden dirty jokes hits differently.
BlueSnaggleTooth359@reddit
OG Star Wars was actually woke though. Baddies were all British accent white guys and good guy rebels were all races, all species, all sexes. Etc.
BlueSnaggleTooth359@reddit
If real boobies could be PG in the 80s, they sure as hell are not gonna go R for duck boobies.
BlueSnaggleTooth359@reddit
although then again now that I read that....
big-hero-zero@reddit
Leah Thompson's ass makes this movie watchable.
darthsokath@reddit
This movie is so awesomely terrible and has a special place in my Xennial heart.
seffend@reddit
Saaaame.
WeatherIcy6509@reddit
I've always liked this movie. 😁
Ms_Rarity@reddit
TBH I was kind of sad Howard the Duck didn't cameo in Deadpool and Wolverine.
It was Marvel's first wide-release theatrical film,* after all. You may want us to forget, Marvel, but the Internet never forgets!
(*There was a theatrical 1944 Captain America film, but Marvel wasn't Marvel yet, so arguably that one doesn't count.)
boringsuburbandad@reddit
I was about to post about this being the first live action Marvel theatrical film... because Captain America was a serial, not really a 'movie'. Your argument about it not being Marvel yet actually makes more sense.
In any case, anyone who is a fan of the MCU needs to show proper respect to Howard.
YVRkeeper@reddit
I’ll take some fake duck breasts over the blood and gore violence that is widely accepted under the PG umbrella these days.
DebiMoonfae@reddit
I likes that movie when I was a kid but when I watched it as an adult I added it to the list of movies I shouldn’t have watched until I was older.
Unfair-Geologist-284@reddit
I watched that movie more times than I care to admit. Why? I have no idea.
MNPS1603@reddit
I remember my mom took my brother and I to see this in the theater. I was maybe 9 or 10, brother three years younger. I didn’t really think much of it good or bad, but my mom went on and on for years about it being the worst movie she had ever seen.
remedialknitter@reddit
I heckin love this movie!! I have loved it since I was little. I was so excited to see a glimpse of him in the new Marvel movies. I wish they'd go ahead and make a new movie of him. I've read all the newer comics they put out with him in the last ten years or so too. I think he's a good level of sassy and weird to fit in well amongst the Guardians of the Galaxy and Avenger folk. I would also accept a team up between Howard the Duck and Squirrel Girl.
Think_Profit4911@reddit
I’ve heard rumor that Kevin Smith (Clerks, Dogma) is working on a Howard the Duck reboot
moles-on-parade@reddit
I have to bust your chops just a little bit for bothering to include some of Kevin Smith’s body of work in this of all subs. 😆
Tacothekid@reddit
This movie is the best movie about a duck from outer space that I've ever seen
wastedpotential31886@reddit
I too watched this for the first time in like 30 years this weekend and child me did not remember the duck boobs.
Moist-Cloud2412@reddit
Lol The duck Titties are what I remembered the most😅
GeetarEnthusiast85@reddit (OP)
TBH, neither did I. That's why I was like "This was rated PG?"
wastedpotential31886@reddit
Tell me about it. Not my proudest fap.
OpiumPhrogg@reddit
I believe it was rated PG because it was released before Temple of Doom and that was the movie that caused the creation of PG-13 and R ratings.
Scrapla@reddit
I remember watching at as a kid when I was home sick with the flu. I can never re watch it without remembering how sick I was especially when that guy started to transform into the alien creature in the diner.
songbird81@reddit
That terrified me as a kid. I haaated the tongue especially. I watched the movie a million times and always looked away for that part. Unfortunately still burned in my brain though.
Esseldubbs@reddit
PG-13 wasn't a rating yet, so if you weren't R you were default PG.
There are a ton of PG 80's movies that would be PG-13 now
Abraxas_1408@reddit
Another cocaine-fueled 80’s fever dream.
MyCleverNewName@reddit
Duckman > Howard the Duck
itsagrungething69@reddit
It's Quacktastic!
InNausetWeTrust@reddit
Yes arguably the worst movie made in the last 40 years
Motor-Tap4350@reddit
Ahh. When I was an adult, I realized the beasteallity parts
Joeva8me@reddit
Who care about duck boobs. The opening sequence has some fantastic ones perfect for wearing out the VCR pause button.

I love that movie with all my heart.
HunnyPuns@reddit
I love this movie so much. :D
Interesting_Tea_6734@reddit
Cleave-land 😅
Geekboxing@reddit
I feel like they hadn't completely figured out the then-recent PG-13 rating at that point.
ApocolypseJoe@reddit
So it aged well?🤣🤣
epidemicsaints@reddit
They really thought that was gonna blow up. Ford Fairlane with Andrew Dice Clay, same problems.
I think for both movies they didn't make it gimmicky enough. Makes them come off as half baked, chickened out.
Much-Diet1423@reddit
Ford Fairlane, haven’t heard that name in decades lol
NectarSweat@reddit
I loved it when I was a kid. I tried to watch it again a few years ago and was like WTF?!
cerialthriller@reddit
I watched BioDome for the first time In 20 years and holy shit was it bad. Only decent think about the movie was that Chasing Amy blasted her in every single one of her scenes
_Can_i_play_@reddit
Shit still holds up. 👍👍
TheLastBlakist@reddit
Everyone remembers the duck tits (WooOooo.)
ramalledas@reddit
I remember the inter-species relationship a bit more
Apprehensive_Hat8986@reddit
❤ Lea 😍 Thompson 💗
Loneshark707@reddit
The character's creator had a big hand in developing the script and was on-set for most of it. It's purposely, unapologetically bad, and I love everything about it.
majorjoe23@reddit
Are you sure about that? Wikipedia says "Though Gerber's schedule generally prevented him from being present during the shooting, he chose to miss the deadline on the first issue of The Spectre so he could watch the final day.^([11])"
Also from Wikipedia: "Gerber read over the script and offered his comments and suggestions." Which doesn't sound like he was really involved in the development at all.
Loneshark707@reddit
Huh, then I'm probably mis-remembering. If I can find a source that says otherwise, I'll link it.
Glittering-Most-9535@reddit
Airplane! came out a few years earlier, was rated PG, and had non-animatronic human lady boobies. Because I think at the time they were more literal about the letters P and G, as in there was meant to be a parent there guiding the viewing experience, and covering a kids eyes when there were nipples on screen trying to corrupt their tiny minds.
Chihlidog@reddit
I can't help myself, Jeffrey Jones is absolutely hilarious in the diner scene. I don't know why I think it's so funny.
"She took my eggs".......
majorjoe23@reddit
Keep in mind that PG movies regularly had nudity, I believe even some after the PG-13 rating was introduced.
My guess if they figured duck boobies weren't titillating enough (heh) to warrant a higher rating.
brianc500@reddit
This movie is so absurd lol. The actor who played Howard the Duck is from my hometown so I’m partial to it.
translucentcop@reddit
You’re from Duckworld?!?
Shigglyboo@reddit
I love Howard the Duck. One of my favorite movies. It’s super weird and the aliens at the end were the best SFX I’d ever seen at the time.
xavierguitars@reddit
You can order a chicken breast, so naturally ducks have breast too....nice, big, juicy duck tits....
BrattyTwilis@reddit
Still waiting for that MCU remake. I'm sure in the right hands, they could make a better movie
MikeDawg@reddit
The MCU is strong, with this one.
Chemical-Cap-3982@reddit
I don't think it was supposed to be the classic that it became.
DiaDeLosMuebles@reddit
Not to mention that ducks don’t have mammary glands or nipples!
Muderous_Teapot548@reddit
I think PG-13 was too new at the point and they were still trying to decide where to draw the line. It was more aimed at action or frightening scenes.
