What are the consequences of the Jeremy Kyle Show?

The Lie Detector tests weren't anywhere near as accurate as they made out on the show, just seeing if anyone out there was on it and got accused of lying even though they were telling the truth, and what happened afterwards?
TermAggravating8043@reddit
My cousin was on one of the specials, nothing exciting though.
Personally I miss this program, I enjoyed having it on in the background. I do feel sorry for the guy that killed himself and his family of course, but I do believe the lie detectors were right in the majority of cases, and perhaps I’m naive but if you knew you were innocent you’d demand to have them done again, and you certainly wouldn’t fail every single question.
This show was simply an opportunity for the great unwashed to get a quick chance at fame, whist being put in a fancy hotel and catered for for a few days. The vast majority of the people on it, went back to their own lives to create more shitty dramas.
But every now and then, this show would give you a piece of history. They had the mother of the moors murders boy on trying to help the search for her sons body, they had the couple on that found out they were actually brothers, they had mick phillpot on with his wife and gf before he went on to murder his 5 kids then blame his gf for it.

Lie detectors don't work at all. They're as reliable as putting a piece of paper that says lie and one that says true in a parrot's cage and seeing which gets shat on first. If you were arrested at 2 in the morning, accused of killing 3 people and got put through a polygraph test, you'd fail because you'd be stressed, which is basically what it detects. Conversely, if you had done it but clenched your anus while doing the control questions, you'd fail. They are not lie detectors, lie detectors do not exist. They are 50-60% accurate. Do you know what else is 50-60% accurate? Guessing. If someone was in a different room, I'd never met them and had no details, was just asked to say true or lie, I'd be as accurate as a polygraph test. David Mitchell and Lee Mack are better at spotting liars than polygraph tests.
You calling the guests "the great unwashed" shows exactly what kind of people enjoyed this show. People who just wanted to gawk and sneer at people they perceived as beneath them, when the worst scumbag in the room was almost always the prick holding the cards. If he didn't know polygraph tests were horseshit, he was thick. If he did know, he was evil. I mean of course, he was evil regardless for choosing to present that shit, but still.
mynameisdamn@reddit
The problem is it’s a stress test not a lie detector test… and I’m pretty sure the Jeremy Kyle atmosphere induced a lot of stress.
Legitimate_Squash659@reddit
Nah they’re straight up pseudoscience nonsense
If they were that effective then the yanks would’ve caught the soviet spies that were double agents during the Cold War
You’re right in that they test for signs of psychological stress, but the signs they’re monitoring are affected by a wide array of factors. If I strapped you into the “magic truth seeing machine” and accused you of committing a heinous crime you’d be stressed
I’m very thankful that our court system see them for what they are, and they hold no more weight than a clairvoyant does in terms of “evidence”
And to follow onto your point, yes absolutely the show made it even more stressful. I don’t know their full procedure, but the “backstage” was designed with filming in there in mind, and was deliberately made a maze to make it more confusing for “guests”, “guests” being picked up hours earlier than the stated time only to be dumped in a room by themselves for hours. It was straight up bear baiting
Exploitation of vulnerable people for entertainment
Demiboy94@reddit
There was a bbc article today about a guy who killed himself after taking the test on the show.
The documentary about the show on 4oD was excellent
Radiant-Sorbet-2212@reddit
I had to turn off the news when those clips came on. My heart was breaking for that man.

Lie detectors can’t tell you if someone is lying, just someone is stressed answering a specific question, it’s why they’re never used in court.
blozzerg@reddit
I studied them at uni, they’re about 50-60% accurate, which is equivalent of…guessing.
I remember one study got some professionals in to determine if someone was lying or not, so think senior military folk, police interrogators or negotiators, people with decades of experience of working out if someone is being honest. The best you can get. Asked the subject a bunch of controlled questions, they had to sometimes be truthful, sometimes lie etc. and asked the professionals for their opinion, as well as doing the lie detector to see whether it could work out when they lied too.
If I remember, the professionals were accurate 60% of the time, which is only slightly better than guessing which would be 50% (it’s either a truth or a lie). The lie detector was slightly less accurate.
GlasgowBAB@reddit
Given the nature of the questioning it was never just "DID YOU CHEAT!" It was "Have you ever been unfaithful!" During questioning the guest could be conditioned about what unfaithful means. It could mean having sex with another person besides your partner, It could be holding somebody else's hand, It could be just chatting with somebody else and thinking unfaithful thoughts. There is an argument to be made that checking out the curves on the office hottie and thinking about her sexually is a form of being unfaithful. Same goes for having a close relationship where you tell somebody your emotions. The outcome of the answer to the question is entirely subjective but you can always manipulate an outcome. Its about as unscientific as anything can be
Garfie489@reddit
They were once used in a scientific paper to show that plants can feel pain.
Admittedly im not sure if the paper was serious or satire however. You do sometimes get scientific papers with genuine studies deliberately trying to get nonsense results to prove a piece of equipment is nonsense.
meandmyflock@reddit
Every show ended up being about lie detector results-Kyle LOVED the lie detector, I just thought it was really boring. I hate the guy and hope he gets his comeuppance finally since he seems to have moved swiftly on from all the damage he did-he's just on the radio now instead I believe. Shouldn't be able to get away with it. Also how many kids by how many women?! Put something on the end of it Kyle!
Top_Explanation_3383@reddit
Jeremy was banging a 16year old intern too. He is absolute scum
meandmyflock@reddit
Wouldn't surprise me.
TheSilkyBat@reddit
At the very least, it showed us how rough some people in this country are.
At the very most, it destroyed lives and fractured families/relationships.
Raventree321@reddit
Apparently the producers would tell the guests that they’d be picked up for filming at one time but then the guests would be picked up hours beforehand so they wouldn’t have had time to shower/get ready. Hence why they all looked super rough. Oh, and they’d be able to use the hotel bar for free too the night before just to doubly look rough in the morning.
meandmyflock@reddit
I read they were given what to wear as well-ie tracksuits and plied with booze. Also the staff would rile them up saying the other guest was saying all kinds of stuff about them, which wasn't true.
nathderbyshire@reddit
But then they could shower at the hotel surely? And they doesn't explain the peggies on the people, they were the true stars of the show. That's a lifetime of not brushing teeth not one night
Raventree321@reddit
The guests would be told they’d be picked up at say noon, but then they’d get a knock at their hotel door at 7am saying they had to leave that instant hence why they all look like they’ve just rolled out of bed… because they had!
gyroda@reddit
Yeah, they went out of their way to cause the people on the show to look bad no matter what.
Bantabury97@reddit
It was horrid Americanised tripe that lead to the deaths of at least 2 people. The lie detectors were awful and so many innocent people were wrongly accused and had their relationships destroyed. All by a public school boy bellend who pretends to understand and care but is actually a right wing nutter like so many others of his ilk.
ArcTan_Pete@reddit
Lie detectors tests are not allowed in the UK courts for a reason. It's only undeveloped countries (coughUSAcough) that place any credence in them..
...and that has led to some serious problems - a Russian agent who spent years working for the CIA passing frequent polygraphs - and a killer, who passed the polygraph, was freed (and went on to kill again) while an innocent man was sent down for murder after failing the polygraph in the same case
Fun fact = they were invented by the guy who created 'wonder woman' - who, famously, had a 'lasso of truth'
boredstudent81@reddit
Does anyone else remember the episode where he had young guy (I believe his name was Josh) in for a lie detector test to see if he stole from his Mum's handbag? Josh was going to move in with a friend who was in the audience and there was also a bit where Jeremy read out a letter from Josh's sister who said she didn't trust him one bit.
When Jeremy was reading out the results he asked Josh, "Why did you say no [that you stole from your Mum]?" and Josh confidently said, "I was telling the truth!" before Jeremy revealed he was lying. Josh insisted again and again he wasn't lying, and looked genuinely shocked. He went into the studio to find his Mum promising he didn't do it and offering to take the test again. Jeremy told him to do one and said he could "see in his eyes" that he was lying before the result.
I watched that episode way before the Steven Diamond incident and even then I believed Josh. Now I'm more convinced than ever that this was a case where the test was wrong :(
phatboi23@reddit
because all a "lie detector" does is look for stress.
you'll easily fail one when there's family involved even if you're 100% telling the truth.
Postik123@reddit
I dunno, but I remember one of the "guests" on his show skimmed his lie detector result card through the air and it hit Jeremy on the back of the head. You could see for a fraction of a second he was caught completely off guard and thought someone had come up from behind and hit him. I quite enjoyed that moment.
totalewis@reddit
I remember this, lmao. He turned around, looking bewildered, and his hair stuck up from the great strike.
TheGhastlyFisherman@reddit
Well it was cancelled due to Jeremy driving someone to suicide. And then a few years later, one of the producers killed herself from guilt.
Mammoth_Parfait7744@reddit

The article says she killed herself because she lost her job when it was axed, and couldn't find work.
Nothing to do with feeling bad about what she had taken part in...
TheGhastlyFisherman@reddit
So I misremembered. That's still 2 suicides that Jeremy Kyle and his team caused. Fuck them.
Mammoth_Parfait7744@reddit
Absolutely 👍
ReggaeZero@reddit
Shhh that doesn’t fit the narrative of people willingly signing up to reality TV being a bad thing!!!
TheGhastlyFisherman@reddit
You sound like just the sort of cunt who watched Jeremy Kyle.
That show took advantage of people with mental health issues, stressful situations, and other problems. They were not capable of providing informed consent. The show also regularly lied to them, didn't provide the care promised, and faked mental health evaluations (done by people with no training or accountability) in order to get them to agree.
Jeremy Kyle and all who supported him are scum.
ReggaeZero@reddit
You sound just like the sort of cunt who insists people are unable to take responsibility for their own lives.
Never watched the show for what it’s worth.
Mammoth_Parfait7744@reddit
Jeremy Kyle is an absolute cunt who took advantage of dysfunctional families struggling with drug abuse and alcoholism, using discredited lie detectors to bully and embarrass people who were not intelligent enough to defend themselves.
Fuck him, I hope he rots in hell.
Vellaciraptor@reddit
Well, the show got cancelled because one person took his life after failing a lie detector test. There's a Channel 4 documentary about it.
Garfie489@reddit
I don't wish to be pedantic, but we need to challenge terminology such as "failing a lie detector test".
It gives far, far too much legitimacy to the polygraph test performed. An unaware reader could read it as "he got caught as a liar" when, in actuality, the likelihood is production thought it'd be more interesting for them to be called a liar.
Vellaciraptor@reddit
Honestly, I'm so aware that polygraphs are nonsense that I forget other people aren't. What terminology would you suggest?
Garfie489@reddit
Im aspergic, so admittedly the way i type probably sounds overly formal. But
Well, the show got cancelled at least in part because one person took his life after taking a polygraph test. The show marketed this as a "lie detector test", despite scientific evidence demonstrating this to be false, with the producers later admitting they regularly fabricated results for these tests - whilst on screen claiming near complete accuracy to the audience and guests.
Vellaciraptor@reddit
I've updated my comment. It's not as fully explained as yours, but hopefully the important part is there now. Thank you!
Discopants180@reddit
Been in the crowd a couple of times, Kyle is even slimier in real life than he is on tele....
Also the bouncers that "break up" the fights on tele aren't that swift, some lass got a cracking dig in on her pal before they intervened.
Zennyzenny81@reddit
Lie detector tests aren't real, full stop.
There's a reason they aren't admissable as evidence in court. They are complete pseudoscience.
LivalicetheOK@reddit
At best they're nervousness tests, and being put through what you think is a "lie detector" is probably going to make you a bit nervous already. Polygraphs are great for giving false positives.
GreenCache@reddit
I actually went on a date with a guy years back who ended up on the Jeremy Kyle show a year later, he seemed normal at the time I met him but we just didn't click after meeting in person. This guy was living in a decent home and working a managerial job he seemed to enjoy from what I remember. A few years later I saw the same guy on a porn site and watched out of intrigue only to be shocked at how broken he looked.
I'm not going to say that the show is the sole reason this guy went downhill but I think it definitely contributed. To air your issues on a show like that and have Jeremy act like Judge, Jury and Executioner has got to have some extremely negative consequences considering it's televised for the world to see.
DavidVPC44@reddit
Probably a lot of mental health issues for people who went on it.
Agreeable-Dinner@reddit
Jeremy Kyle may have be a lying coersive twat but he knew exactly what the viewers wanted.
Effective_Ad_273@reddit
I’m sure at least one person committed suicide after the show, and you can imagine many relationships were negatively impacted from even appearing on the show. Looking back, the worst part about the show is how it was framed as a resource to help families or individuals, but it was really just poverty porn. Picking apart the working class and taking advantage of some of their naivety to entertain the audience. Jeremy Kyle as a person is garbage. He seemed to take pleasure in humiliating his guests and making himself feel superior when he himself has had his fair share of issues in his personal life.
Overall, I’d guess that less than 10% of the people who went on that show came out with a positive experience from it.
Cool-Caterpillar-630@reddit
I’ll always remember the paternity test with the blatantly black baby. 😂
ExpressAffect3262@reddit
I think people who went on the show just used it for a mini-trip away at an all-expenses paid holiday.
My wife had an old school friend who went on the show twice, just because it was a laugh, they liked the attention & as mentioned, got a free trip/hotel out of it.
Aside from the guy who committed suicide, I don't think there were general consequences.
The type of people who went on the show are the ones who were arguing years beforehand, and would have argued years afterwards.
One-Storm6266@reddit
It was an evil show aimed at demonizing the working class. Owen Jones mentioned the show in his book. The 1 percenters absolutely DESPISE us 99 percenters and this trash show reflects their view on us all. We are ALL working class.
Realkevinnash59@reddit
Mostly no major consequences. There were a few scraps and arguments, but they were likely behaving on the show and their home lives were quite close to how they were on the show. So any break-ups etc would have likely happened anyway.
The case with the guy committing suicide is tragic, since he was a known chronic pathological/compulsive liar. which means his natural response to any question is to immediately tense up and think of a lie. So his lie detector results couldn't show if he was telling the truth one way or the other. Just so happened he was telling the truth, the test said he was lying, he lost his mrs through no fault of his own and killed himself. tragic.
For the most part the people on screen were the same demographic as the audience at home. They applied to be on the show themselves as each episode had a section where it asked "do you think your partner has been unfaithful? Does your parent or guardian not respect you? call and talk to us today". And if the show runners thought your story sounded interesting enough, they'd pay for everyone who wanted to be on the telly to come down, stay in a hotel, get fed on ITV's budget and also get to be on the TV.
The show was about as deep as a copy of the Daily Star or Sun, most topics were chosen because they were the biggest subjects people argued about, and the shows producers would rile up the guests in the green room so they'd come out on stage fuming.
The audience was mostly people who were at home during daytime TV hours, so usually students and the unemployed. The students usually nabbed the free audience seats as you likely had to provide your own transport, and the unemployed usually nabbed the topic guest opportunity as it got them out the house for a trip to London.
SlySquire@reddit
I worked with a lad who had been on it. Wouldn't tell anyone why and I spent months trying to find the episode. Never did. Think he was more embarrassed about the whole thing than anything else.
Jlaw118@reddit
An old neighbour of ours’ wife had passed away, and he very quickly moved on with this girl significantly younger than him. He moved out of our street and moved somewhere else in the country with this lady.
They ended up on the show but for an absolutely ridiculous reason. It was something like he was accusing her of sending naked pictures to somebody she played an online game with, and her argument back was that she found a lump and this guy had said he was a doctor 🤦🏻♂️
They argued and bickered and Jeremy didn’t even resolve it, he actually just crawled off the stage whilst they continued to argue in the background.
As if we didn’t think that was a publicity stunt, a few years later they both went on Judge Rinder for something completely different. They were clearly just money grabbing
