Have you ever been to your state’s largest city or your state’s capital?

I’m sure most people who live in small Northeastern states have been to both, but most people live hours away from these cities.
Im_a_hamburger@reddit
Both. One was for a protest.
Euphoric_Injury_5535@reddit
Mainer here. I have been to Portland (biggest) and Augusta (capital)
There fine. I mean Augusta has some ghettos and is the smoker capital of Maine but their fine. Most people in the suburbs or the rural places tend to dislike cities where I'm from. I like em more than the rural places I am now but it's a personal opinion.
But it's really interesting to see the differences. For example.
People in rural Maine tend to have a basic t-shirt and jeans with some stains on it.
People in the cities have a jacket a cool shirt and skinny or cargo pants with a few rings or even earrings.
Cool to see the differencea
manicpixidreamgirl04@reddit
I live in the largest city but I've never been to the capital.
thelordstrum@reddit
NY:
New York City: I'm from the Bronx, so yes.
Albany: I've been a few times. Most notable time was a field trip to the State Assembly as a kid.
MD:
Baltimore - Haven't been since I moved down here, but I did go there as a teenager (as part of my field trip to DC).
Annapolis - Go somewhat regularly. Usually for car-related stuff or anything else that requires me to go to a city.
SheenPSU@reddit
Of course! Not very difficult in these small New England states tho
Manchester and Concord are like 20 miles apart. Just go on the highway and you’ll be there in like 20/25 mins
azuth89@reddit
Yeah, both. "Hours away" doesn't mean much down here.
Hij802@reddit (OP)
Well, I’d say someone from El Paso or Amarillo would be a lot more unlikely to have.
azuth89@reddit
Been to those, too.
We get around lol.
freedux4evr1@reddit
Yup, born and raised in the Houston metro, been to Dallas, Ft. Worth, Austin, San Antonio, El Paso, Amarillo and Lubbock.
AcidAndBlunts@reddit
Yeah I’m from a small town on the Texas-Oklahoma border and I’ve been to Austin (capital city), but I’ve never been to Houston (largest city).
OldStyleThor@reddit
You'd be surprised. Texans vacation in Texas.
travelinmatt76@reddit
Houston is an hour from Houston.
Emotional-Tailor3390@reddit
Same with Chicago
hugeuvula@reddit
Traffic must've improved.
jollyjam1@reddit
This is so brutally true lol
Bender_2024@reddit
I've always liked the saying
"100 years is a long time in America. 100 miles is a long way in Europe."
I took a round trip of 300 miles on Friday and thought nothing of it.
Ernigirl@reddit
Out here, either. Californian here - “hours away” has meant my daily commute more than one job in my life.
azuth89@reddit
Pretty sure it's purely a northeast thing. I wound up in a different state by missing an exit up there once, it's wild.
tifosi7@reddit
100%. Lived in Austin for 10 years and visited SA, Dallas and H-town a few times each year.
Heck, we travel 90 minutes just to try new barbecue or tacos - Lockart, Tyler.
Keewee250@reddit
Sort of?
When I lived in CA, I lived in LA and visited SD often. Went to SF twice. Never went to Sacramento.
When I lived in TX, I went to all the major cities, including Austin, multiple times.
When I lived in WA, I only stayed in the SeaTac area. I don't even know where Olympia is.
When I lived in NY, I lived right outside of NYC (worked in the Bronx). I went to Albany once; had been to Buffalo and Rochester.
I live in VA now, and have been to Richmond several times, as well as NoVa, CVille, and the other major hubs.
Champsterdam@reddit
Yes, I’ve actually been to most state capitals and largest cities of most states.
Spyrovssonic360@reddit
I've been to Seattle a lot of times. even drove past it on occasion going to a different city. believe it or not, I live about an hour or so from Seattle, so it isn't a big deal for me whenever I go over there. Just wish it wasn't so overpopulated. One of these days I'd love to go visit Olympia, never been there before.
TaquitoLaw@reddit
Here in Arizona they are one and the same and I happen to live there these days. I grew up in North Carolina on the coast and went to the capital several times, the largest city was pretty far away so I didn't really ever go there that I remember, not until I was older and moved away from home.
More_Cowbell_@reddit
Just curious… I grew up near the ocean as well. Nothing against AZ, but I can’t imagine living away from it. That doesn’t bother you?
TaquitoLaw@reddit
I do miss the ocean for sure. Living near it just isn't in the cards right now I'm afraid.
La_Rata_de_Pizza@reddit
I live in the largest city and state capital
FernMariposa@reddit
Yes and yes. I live in Omaha, my parents live in Lincoln. They’re pretty much the only cities the state has lol
whitecollarpizzaman@reddit
I used to live in and currently live in a suburb of the largest city in my state, the capital city I’ve been to on numerous occasions, and I was literally just there for work today (truck driver.)
Red_Beard_Rising@reddit
Yep. Lived in it for 15 years. The other 30 have been in the burbs.
Unpopularwaffle@reddit
Nevadan here:
I've been to Las Vegas once as it is 8 hours by car from where I do live.
Carson City is the capital, and I have been there a few times as it is like an hour from where I live.
Alaxbird@reddit
Yeah. Spent four months stuck in a hospital there when I was six
Seventh_Stater@reddit
I have been to both.
CherryBoard@reddit
Yes. Albany is a shithole
Evil_Weevill@reddit
Yeah. Of course.
I haven't spent much time in Augusta. There's not a lot there.
But I've been to Portland a bunch.
polkadot_polarbear@reddit
Yes & Yes, been to Anchorage & Juneau
Gatorae@reddit
I've been to every major city in Florida. Tallahassee is way too far away and there is nothing there except FSU and FAMU. I've visited, but only to see friends in college and later as a stopover on my way elsewhere. It's a nice college town with a capital in it.
Joodles17@reddit
The 3 states I’ve lived in… CO Largest city: live in it Capital: same city
NM Largest city: lived there Capital: yes
AK Largest city: lived there Capital: no (too far away and relatively inaccessible)
itsmejustmeonlyme@reddit
I’ve lived in California my whole life. I lived in SoCal as a kid, then moved up north. I lived in Sacramento for a few years in college but came back up after. I’m just a few hours south of the Oregon border. I was in Los Angeles last year. First time I’d driven through there in a very long time.
River-19671@reddit
Yes, to both (Minneapolis and St Paul)
gioraffe32@reddit
I lived in the state's largest city by pop and area (Kansas City) for the last several years and grew up in the suburbs, visited the state's largest metro by pop (Greater St. Louis) many times, though often just passing through, and visited the state capital once or twice (Jefferson City).
St. Louis was only 3hrs away. I think Jeff City was like 2hrs away.
aaross58@reddit
Yes. The difference between Baltimore and Annapolis is night and day.
MihalysRevenge@reddit
I was born and raised in my states largest city and the capital is only a hour away. I have been to every city in the state which there aren't many lol
nomoreozymandias@reddit
Are you still here in the 505?
MihalysRevenge@reddit
Indeed I am.
Wespiratory@reddit
I work part time in the largest city and have worked in the capital as well.
According-Bug8150@reddit
Atlanta is both, and yes.
greendalehb11@reddit
Daily, even.
greendalehb11@reddit
Was born there. Then raised there.
adamrac51395@reddit
Yes and yes
JisuanjiHou@reddit
I live in Atlanta! It is both the largest city and the capital.
BALLERinaLyfe@reddit
I've lived in two different states' capitals (KS and MD) and I've at least stopped off in the capital of my current state at some point. I would say most schoolchildren probably visit their state's capital at some point.
Brandino1999@reddit
Grew up in Central Illinois, I’ve been to both multiple times and for being the largest city in Central IL, Springfield is boring as hell. The only thing to do there is Abraham Lincoln shit.
OddTransportation121@reddit
Of course
Honest_Report_8515@reddit
In my current state of West Virginia? No.
In my native state of Virginia? Many times.
Judgy-Introvert@reddit
Yes to both. We live about 4-5 hours from each.
TheOmniverse_@reddit
Been to both NYC and Albany, ones much better than the other
Whitecamry@reddit
I've never been to Trenton.
Laiko_Kairen@reddit
Californian here.
I live an hour east of Los Angeles. My cousins live in Sacramento. I've been to every major city in the state.
Gswizzlee@reddit
I was an hour south of Sacramento and my aunt lives there so we’d go a lot
lavasca@reddit
Yep. Los Angeles is a required visit. I dodged Sacramento until adulthood.
nativeangel213@reddit
Sacramento is not bad. I actually enjoyed the summer I spent there. Incredible farmer's market, cool area around the Capitol, and Old Sacramento is a nice visit. We used it as home base on a trip recently to go to San Francisco and the redwoods, and it worked out very well
lavasca@reddit
It isn’t a bad place. It simply doesn’t touch the ocean. My life is bad unless I can conveniently touch the ocean or a bay every day.
I think I should go to the beach during lunch today.
Plantayne@reddit
I lived in California for a decade and never left the LA/OC area except passing through the IE on trips back east. It's kind of crazy when you think that you lived so long in such a small radius, like these New Yorkers who wake up one day and realize they haven't left the island of Manhattan in 5 years.
HourBlueberry5833@reddit
New York is right next to New Jersey, Connecticut, and Pennsylvania though. Most of us have been to multiple states just because northeast states are so small. A seven hour drive from Boston to DC will take you through 7-8 states.
lavasca@reddit
Meanwhile you can start at one end of California and can’t reach the other end after 8 hours.
True for North to South. False for West to East.
More_Cowbell_@reddit
But that’s the thing about a dense city. You can have more… everything, so close.
San Francisco is only 7 miles by 7 miles, for example, and I’ve met people that told me they don’t even go to one side of the city.
And yet, they still have more at their fingertips than someone in the middle of Kansas would have within 200 miles.
FederalAmmunition@reddit
Fellow Californian here. I’m so sorry…
tooslow_moveover@reddit
I think Bakersfield belongs to Oklahoma
ResidentRunner1@reddit
Make it a part of the panhandle
Gswizzlee@reddit
Yes, state capitals for my state and other states as well. Lived in CA. Been to Sacramento so many times as my aunt lives there and I lived an hour south in the 209. Now in VA. Been to Richmond. Been to DC. Been to Atlanta, GA, Raleigh, NC, Nashville, TN, and many more.
trexalou@reddit
The “hours away from” part is what’s hanging you up. 4 hours one way is short enough for a day trip. 5-7 hours is a weekend and 8+ hours is a long weekend - week trip. For me anyway, though there are exceptions. I’m 8-9 driving hours from Chicago (still in Illinois, but tiny bladder). However, I can drive a hour and catch Amtrak and go another 5.5-6 hours. If I catch the 3 am train to Chicago and the 8pm train home, that 9 hour each way drive becomes a day trip to a museum.)
I’ve also driven from my house in Illinois to Miami FL and back in about 58 hours. (I bought a boat on eBay. 😆)
That said, I’ve never been to MY state capitol. Others, yes… just not Springfield.
Realistic_Phone_9606@reddit
I've been to the state and national capital. Neither are very exciting tbh
dumbandconcerned@reddit
Yep, been to both. Biggest city more than the capital. Capital ~2 hours away, biggest city ~3. That’s like, a casual day trip
littlemiss198548912@reddit
I live in my state's capital (Lansing) and been to the state's largest city (Detroit).
ButterFace225@reddit
I live in one of the "big" cities. Our capital is in the center of the state, so most people can get to it pretty easily.
rckblykitn14@reddit
I live in the US's smallest state. I'm about 10 seconds by car from the capital, and 10 seconds the other direction to another state entirely.
Sp4ceh0rse@reddit
Yes. I live in the largest city and the capital is only like an hour away. Have been there plenty of times.
Traditional_Entry183@reddit
I grew up in WV and lived there until I was 26, but I've only been to Charleston a few times. It's a four hour drive from my hometown and not really on the way to anywhere I've traveled.
VA is another story, as I worked in Richmond for five years and have been there well over 100 other times to do stuff.
Immediate_Bet2199@reddit
Yes (Olympia) and yes (Seattle and Seattle area)
tuiva@reddit
I live in it's largest city (LA). Never been to the capital of California (Sacremento), though.
machagogo@reddit
I'd say most people in New Jersey have not been to our capital Trenton even thought it is pretty damn close to everyone.
The city offers basically nothing of interest to the average person.
No sports team, no meaningful entertainment venues. It is nowhere near the largest city even in a state with small cities and is not a major center of commerce or industry.
shelwood46@reddit
The number may go up if they live in Central Jersey, especially if you're in Mercer County. I lived in Princeton for ages and went to Trenton a lot, particularly for medical care (and one time to PSE&G hq)
holiestcannoly@reddit
I’ve lived in four states.
PA: no VA: yes NC: yes OH: yes
shelwood46@reddit
I am always surprised when I look up the largest city in each state, which is a weird thing I do somewhat regularly, and the answer for Ohio is Columbus by a pretty wide margin.
Necessary_Zone6397@reddit
I live in Philadelphia (largest city) and have been to the state capital (Harrisburg), but I would definitely bet most Pennsylvanians have never been to Harrisburg.
shelwood46@reddit
I used to go for the Fire Expo, oddly enough when I was living in NJ (I do live in NEPA now)
grandzu@reddit
But the Harrisburg Coat Outlet for irregular coats!
laserdollars420@reddit
Yep, out of all the states I've lived in PA is the only one whose capital I haven't been to, and that's the state I've lived in the longest. It's just so out of the way and not particularly appealing for any reason.
Hij802@reddit (OP)
I mean, anyone in eastern PA is less than 2 hours drive away, not to mention Hershey’s existence right nearby likely has led to lots of people checking out Harrisburg. I think western PA residents are less likely to have, considering Pittsburgh is 3 hours away and Erie is 4.5 away.
Muii_GI@reddit
Nebraska. Yes, I've been to Omaha, countless times- actually. But, I've never went to Lincoln before. Unfortunately-
OK_Ingenue@reddit
I think most Americans have been to their state’s largest city and the state capital. It would be more unusual if they hadn’t visited. I’ve lived in Texas, Ohio, California and Oregon. Yes to your question in all states where I’ve lived.
Fantastic_Rock_3836@reddit
Really? I haven't and have no plans to. They are one in the same and almost 500 miles away.
OK_Ingenue@reddit
What state? Texas? CA? Just curious…
I did say most people have seen their capital/largest city, not all people.
Fantastic_Rock_3836@reddit
Idaho.
OK_Ingenue@reddit
Yeah pretty long state. Beautiful up north. I prob live as close to Boise as you do. Oregon.
redjessa@reddit
Yes, both. Forget hours, I live 20 minutes away from the largest city in my state. Hours away from the capital, but I've been there.
enormuschwanzstucker@reddit
Yes
Acceptable_Peen@reddit
I think outside of Alaskans, or people who have recently moved to their state, it’s probably likely that most Americans have been to their own state capital, at a bare minimum. There are always exceptions, of course.
lazyslacker@reddit
I swear questions like this are posed for data farming purposes. Hopefully just for someone's school project and nothing more sinister.
oldcousingreg@reddit
Same place, spent half my life here
Diligent-Ice1276@reddit
Lots of times I'm fairly close to it.
snuffleupagus7@reddit
Yes to both. It seems unusual to me not to, but I live in a pretty small state.
phinbar@reddit
I have, yes. Thanks for asking!
dotdedo@reddit
I’ve been to both. Because I live like a stones throw away from Detroit. And then went to Lansing for an anime convention with an ex that I regret terribly to this day.
Emotional-Tailor3390@reddit
I live in Illinois and, while I haven't been to Springfield, I have lived in and around Chicago the majority of my life
Taz9093@reddit
It’s usually an elementary school field trip to the state capitol building. I think we went in 7th or 8th grade.
RockyArby@reddit
In my birth state of Florida, I've been to Tampa (2 1/2 hours), Orlando (1 hour and 45 minutes), Miami ( 2 hours), and Jacksonville (3 hours and 15 minutes). Never had a reason to go to Tallahassee (5 hours and 20 mins) as it would have been a longer trip than any of those cities I mentioned.
In my current home state of Wisconsin, I live 30 mins from Milwaukee and about 1 hour and 30 minutes from Madison. I've been to both multiple times.
koolman2@reddit
I live in the largest city but Juneau is not available by road. I’ve never been there.
Saltwater_Heart@reddit
I don’t know why, but I’m always amazed by people who live in Alaska. Being from south Florida, it sounds unbearable but it’s also high on my list to visit.
SquidTheSalsaMan@reddit
How do you like living in Alaska? Rural PA here, and I’ve always wanted to visit your state.
IttybittyErin@reddit
I was only there for a few days, but Anchorage actually reminded me a lot of the smaller cities in Western PA like Erie.
koolman2@reddit
I’ve lived here most of my life. It’s fine. I like the slower pace compared to large cities. Winter is long. There’s nowhere to drive that isn’t days away.
secondatthird@reddit
Do Anchorage and the peninsula
PatrollinTheMojave@reddit
Isn't all of Alaska a peninsula?
secondatthird@reddit
I mean the lower on of Alaska itself
Stupid_Watergate_@reddit
I'm so jealous of people who get to live in AK. I was just talking to my husband this morning about how I miss the glaciers/wildlife and it would be a dream to live there. Do you love living there?
koolman2@reddit
I visited central Texas recently and found the scenery and hills much more beautiful than I expected.
Beautiful scenery is all about what you don’t see every day. I love the scenery here and it is gorgeous, but it’s not special to me because I’m always seeing it.
Saltwater_Heart@reddit
Yes. They’re far from me, but I have been to our capital on a field trip when I was in high school. We met Charlie Christ as he was getting into his car at the capital building and made it in the paper after our whole class got a photo with him, and our largest city (Jacksonville). Went there for two concerts in one weekend in 2019. Loved it. Would love to live in the area. The weather was way nicer than down south where I live:
Massive_Potato_8600@reddit
Ive only ever been to the biggest city, philly, cus i live here. Ive never been to the other cities or the capital. When im traveling far it’s usually out of state, nearly never within my own state
FeltIOwedItToHim@reddit
Listen, I've traveled every road in this here land....
kevmart96@reddit
I only passed through Albany once through Amtrak if that counts.
QuinoaPoops@reddit
Much harder for Nevada.
The largest city is Las Vegas and the capital is Carson City. They’re about 7 hours away by car and there really isn’t much of substance in between. I live in one and have never been to the other.
FeltIOwedItToHim@reddit
Don't feel bad. No one else has ever gone to Carson City either.
Ernigirl@reddit
I hear you! Just drove from Riverside county to Yreka (~25 miles below the Oregon border) on Sunday. Good lord, California is long and dull. Like driving from El Paso to New Orleans.
HighFiveKoala@reddit
I'm from California and have been to Sacramento several times. When I lived in Texas I visited Austin once on a weekend trip.
Boo_Pace@reddit
Often, my States capital is about an hour away. Go there for professional sports games and concerts. My largest city is also my capital.
TheMainEffort@reddit
Yes. And this is actually true for every state I’ve lived in for over a year.
Cardboardhumanoid@reddit
Yes they are right next to each other
MurkyPsychology@reddit
Yes to both in each state I’ve lived in - Maryland (Baltimore and Annapolis), Virginia (Virginia Beach and Richmond), Colorado (Denver x2), and California (Los Angeles and Sacramento)
HurtsCauseItMatters@reddit
*looks around at the states surrounding me....*
So if you'd asked me this question last year I would have said .... not only was I born in Louisiana's state capitol, the largest city is only 90 mins away so yes. In addition, I've been to both for all of the states surrounding me - Texas, Arkansas, Mississippi.
Now, however I recently moved to TN. I still live in the State capitol which is also the largest. But I'm now missing 6 of the 9 states that surround me. Guess I have to get to traveling.
HurtsCauseItMatters@reddit
Also, I should mention I drove 3 hours once for beer that wasn't being sold in Louisiana. We measure a drive differently down here I guess.
RatioLivid3320@reddit
Yes. Even though my State is slightly large, I'm still relatively close to both for them.
MM_in_MN@reddit
Well, a day at The Capital is a common 4th grade field trip for most kids in the Twin Cities. And I’ve been several times since then. Either on a tour, or protesting/ rallying for something outside on the steps.
I work in the largest city.
PhysicsEagle@reddit
Yes, but the real question is how many have been to their state’s capitol while in their state’s capital
winter457@reddit
Lived in four states. Three of those states, I lived in the capital. In the other state, the capital was a 3 hour drive and the city had nothing notable besides the state government and a state college.
IOWARIZONA@reddit
Heck, I’ve been to most in all the states
Matchboxx@reddit
I grew up in West Virginia, living there for 20 years. I have never been to Charleston or Huntington or really anything in the lower half of the state.
nerdycarguy18@reddit
Only major City in TN I have yet to visit is Memphis
calicoskiies@reddit
Never been to the capital, but I live in the largest city.
Traditional_Trust_93@reddit
I live very close to the Twin Cities. I'm just on the outskirts of the southeastern metro so yes I have been to St. Paul many a time.
Belisama7@reddit
Yes, it would be very uncommon for anyone to never have gone to their own state capital or major city. I grew up in rural Kansas where the cities and capital were hours away, and we went often. Dr. appointments, shopping, trips to zoos and amusement parks. Even most schools take their students on class trips to the capital.
Odd-Equipment1419@reddit
I don't know that it's that uncommon, especially in some of the sates where the capital is nowhere near the largest city like Nevada, California or Alaska.
Crazyboutdogs@reddit
Yes. Many times.
PoolSnark@reddit
Yes. When I was a kid, all of my state’s elementary schools did a visit to the state capital at least once, maybe during 5 grade?
IMissMyLife1994@reddit
Yes and yes, got shot at in one
Wheres_Izzy@reddit
I have lived in and around the Lansing area for many years now. Have a bunch of family in and around Detroit and have spent a lot of time there.
paka96819@reddit
Well, I live on the same island. But you’ll be surprised how many never have been that live on the island.
Curmudgy@reddit
Wikipedia gives the same number for the population of Oahu and metro Honolulu, which is interesting by itself but doesn’t contradict your statement. If we go with the number for just the urban area, that’s a 4/5 of the population, and it’s difficult to imagine the vast majority of those have never been within the city limits. But that leaves about 200K outside the urban area, and I can see that many would never make it into Honolulu.
Brock_Hard_Canuck@reddit
This is becsuse there are no cities in Hawaii.
The only level of government below the state is the county.
Honolulu is actually Honolulu County, which covers the whole island of Oahu.
The largest settlement outside of Honolulu is Hilo, on the Big Island. But again, Hilo actually isn't a city, its merelyan "unincorporated settlement" (the US Census Bureau considers Hilo to be a "census designated place", and recognizes the Hilo MSA as being coterminous with Hawaii County, which covers the whole of the Big Island).
CupBeEmpty@reddit
I know a few Hawaiians and most from Maui. The number that had never been to the other islands at all surprised me.
languagelover17@reddit
Of course.
UNIONNET27@reddit
Yes to both! Albany is a bit empty at times but I like it. I also grew up in NYC. NYC is NYC. Great places and food I wish I could live there. Too expensive.
RandomGoose26@reddit
I live right outside of Albany and its honestly weird how empty it feels. Anywhere in the city you are it feels like it is abandoned with the lack of people, its like a ghost city.
UNIONNET27@reddit
I will say that Albany has potential. Maybe better (HSR) transportation from NYC to Albany and on to Canada might be helpful. Perhaps investment, better zoning or cheaper housing would work too.
Dai-The-Flu-@reddit
I grew up in NYC so that’s a yes, but I’ve never actually been to Albany.
RandomGoose26@reddit
I live outside of albany and trust me you arent missing much lol

QuebecRomeoWhiskey@reddit
I think they’re the same here (going by city limits, Cleveland might be a bigger metro area) and yes I have
JonMatrix@reddit
Yeah it looks like a giant dick and balls.
jcpainpdx@reddit
It’s a function of the capital’s distance from the state’s major population centers and the extent to which the capital offers attractions other than being the seat of government.
I grew up in Illinois and visited the state capital once, but my parents are interested in politics/history, and I’m sure there are plenty of folks in Chicagoland who never made the trek to Springfield.
I lived on Long Island (New York) for several years and never visited Albany while I lived there. (I had gone to Albany previously but not to the Capitol building.) I’m sure there are many folks from the NYC metro area who’ve never been to Albany.
Ravenclaw79@reddit
Yup yup. But I imagine a decent amount of downstaters have never been to Albany: NYC tends to be its own bubble.
kitchengardengal@reddit
Yep. The ATL is just 40 miles away.
pigeontheoneandonly@reddit

I’m from California (OC) and had been to Sacramento and Los Angeles.
I live in Chicago and have been to Springfield.
icantbelieveit1637@reddit
My states largest city is the capital and I also live there so it all works out.
Free-Veterinarian714@reddit
I've been to the state capital plenty of times, not just the city itself. I even lived in that city for nearly 7 years.
And yes, I have been to the capitol building more than a few times. I have spoken in front of crowds there around 5 times for various causes.
geronika@reddit
I work there.
Tomagander@reddit
I've been to both. My entire life, I've lived 45 minutes or less from one, and no more than 90 minutes from the other. Which is which has changed over time.
uhhohspagettios@reddit
Boston and Boston. Yeah, it's really nice
Additional-Software4@reddit
I went to high school in Los Angeles and visited Sacramento a couple of times.
Old Sacramento is pretty cool
limbodog@reddit
I live there. But the entire state is only a few hour drive across
Jewell84@reddit
I live in Washington DC, and grew up in Harrisburg, PA. So you!
jessper17@reddit
I’ve been to both very frequently. The largest city is an hour away and the state capital is a few miles away.
icspn@reddit
"A few hours" isn't much of a deterrent here. I grew up about 50 (an hour drive) miles away from my states big city/capital and everyone drove into the city at least a couple times a month. Many people (like, numbered in the thousands) do the drive every day.
icspn@reddit
Oh, also, I think I've been to every neighboring states capital also. Out west that's just where the stuff is, unless you're doing nature based activities. There's long, long stretches of empty country in between the cities.
tall-americano@reddit
I’ve never been to Albany, but I’ve been to Santa Fe!
panic_bread@reddit
I have lived in two state capitals (I grew up in the suburb of one of them) and I now live about an hour from the capital of the state where I currently live, so yes, I've been there many times.

Been to Nashville, which is both. I live in the upper East corner of TN. Also driven to Memphis(490 miles, little over a 7 hour drive)
Road trips are part of American culture and long drives aren't really that big of a deal. Most people have probably been to their capital and largest city.
whatafuckinusername@reddit
Milwaukee hundreds of times, as I live ten minutes away. Madison much fewer times, though, maybe once in the past twenty years, lol; I’ve been to Chicago, a bit further away, more times in the last two years than I’ve ever been to Madison.
anneofgraygardens@reddit
yes, I've been to the largest city in California many times. Both of my parents are from Los Angeles (well, my dad is from LA proper, my mom is from the San Gabriel Valley) and I still have family there.
I've been to Sacramento a couple times. I live much much closer to it than I do LA, but I've been there way fewer times because I don't have any big reasons to go there.

I live in the capital city (Topeka), have been to the largest city (Wichita) many times.
Kansas City is larger, but it is situated such that it is split between Kansas and Missouri with the majority of the population on the Missouri side. FWIW I have been there many times as well.

Yep. Not a fan of Lansing and I only know limited parts of Detroit because I don’t get there much.

I will say yes to both. I live about 45 minutes from the biggest city in my state. Los Angeles. And about 7hrs from the Capital of my state. Sacramento. I’ve been to both. I’ve actually been inside the state capitol building in Sacramento.
lpbdc@reddit
There is a major misconception at work here. 80% of Americans live in cities (urban areas). So most people have been to one or the other by virtue of residence. And for those sparsely populated states, the capital is often the largest city, so 2 birds 1 stone. Wyoming's largest, and capital city is Cheyanne. just over 10% of the states population live there. Anchorage is Alaska's largest city and home to almost half of the state's population.
That said, I have been to the largest city or of Capital for every state I've lived except Iowa.
Jakebob70@reddit
Yes to both. Springfield is about an hour and a half away for me, and Chicago is a little over 2 hours. Not a very long drive. I've driven that far for a good burger before.
LineRex@reddit
Yeah, we head up to Portland every other week or so to stay with some friends. Love the place. We always walk to some random bakery or cafe, I tend to spend a lot of the day just wandering. I love the forest of course, but the occasional long stroll through a city is a joy. Plus Portland is the only city with mountaineering & ski shops within an hour of my town so I get to drop in and see some cool stuff.
Salem is closer, but Salem is basically a bunch of houses surrounding the capital building. It is incredibly spread out so you have to drive everywhere, and now more and more national chains are opening so it's losing what little character it had. Still, downtown is nice and walkable.
AilanthusHydra@reddit
Yes. I drive through the largest city on my way to work, as I live in a near suburb on one side and work on the other.

You have to remember, Americans tend to travel further than Europeans do. Spending hours in the car is kind of normal for us, which is one of the reasons American vehicles tend to be larger. It's also why the interstate is so important to us.
Most people do go to most of the larger cities in their state for some reason or another. Some kind of cultural event, or a sporting event, or sometimes just to go shopping or for a specialist of some kind. Sometimes it's a business thing for work.
Or, frankly, just because they want to go to the city to see what it's like.
You will find some people here who haven't left their county, or who haven't been out further than 50 miles away from where they were born, but they are kind of rare. Most of us road trip at least a bit, it's really part of our culture.
JeddakofThark@reddit
I would find it downright weird if they hadn't. With a few exceptions.
I find it weird that I've lived most of my life in Georgia and I've never been to Savannah. Certainly not the capitol (also, it's "capitol") and it's only the fifth largest city, but I understand it's very nice.

I grew up and live in the Chicago suburbs so I've been downtown plenty of times, and I visited Springfield once as a kid for a school fieldtrip. But if it hadn't been for that trip I probably would have never gone to the capital, it's not a great place with much appeal.

Harrisburg no, but I've driven by it before. Philadelphia yes, many times.
jacksbm14@reddit

Gladyskravitz99@reddit
Yes I think it's pretty normal for people to go to both, no matter how big the state and even if you're pretty poor. We all have to have cars here anyway, just to get back and forth to a job, so we can almost all make short trips. And imo anything less than five hours is short, for a trip.
Here in Alabama our capital city has the Shakespeare Festival (common for school trips), a zoo, a living history site, and now the justice memorial, as well as government buildings. And Huntsville has the space and rocket center which is a must see, especially if you have kids.
iSYTOfficialX7@reddit
been to Virginia Beach a couple of times. Despite legally being a city, its more like a cluster of suburbs, a beach, a naval air base, and a very VERY faux downtown.
CupBeEmpty@reddit
I have been to both in every state I have lived in which includes the northeast, Midwest, southeast, and northwest.
A couple were when I was a small kid.
For New England it’s all of them even in the states I didn’t live in. “Hours” of driving is pretty low effort unless it gets in two figures.
Indiana is easy because it’s one place.
Montpelier was the funniest one because I went through almost the whole city until I saw the Capitol and was surprised how small the city was.
Now I am kind of curious how many states I have to both but off hand I know it is a lot of them. Most of the Midwest and northeast, probably a decent chunk of the west too. Maybe not some of the western Midwest/plains states. Some southern states I haven’t probably hit both. It also depends on how you define “been to.” Do you mean literally was present or passed through or do you mean actually spent time there?
Curmudgy@reddit
I’ve seen Montpelier from I-89 but never actually stopped in it.
Come to think of it, the same is true for me for Concord, NH and Hartford, proper. (I’ve been to West Hartford.)
CupBeEmpty@reddit
Yeah I was on 89 coming back from Montreal and needed to get gas so I just followed the nearest gps recommendation not even realizing it was Montpelier.
Concord is a little more obvious if you are on I-93. I can’t remember whether I-89 actually goes through Concord or just skirts around it.

I’m sure most people who live in small Northeastern states have been to both, but most people live hours away from these cities.
What evidence do you have for this? There might be a few Alaskans who live a fair way from Juneau (the capital but not the largest city), and there might be a few Texans who live a fair way from Austin (ditto) - but outside that, every American lives only a couple of hours drive from their state's biggest city - or their state capital if it's different.
Pretty uninteresting question, if you ask me. US states are generally pretty small.
