After Ian and Andrei left, Ryan Smith, head of Anandtech, decided to focus on cooler, PSU, mini-PC reviews.

Meanwhile, they missed reviews on many major products including the M3, Nvidia Ampere generation.

What a strange choice. There is very little demand for written reviews on coolers and PSUs. No one is going to share links on social media.

Meanwhile, their M1 review is still getting cited often even in 2024.

How could Ryan Smith not have a succession plan in place?

To me, Anandtech sort of did this to themselves. Yes, trend was that people want Youtube reviews but mismanagement played a big part of Anandtech's closure.

The issue was probably more of the case that Ryan Smith himself did not have the expertise to write reviews to the same extent not to mention, the difficulty of finding someone with the familiarity. As seen with Anand, Andrei, and many other, most of them to their knowledge to work in the industry which pays extremely well compare to journalism.

It’s true. It didn’t seem like Ryan Smith himself had the skill set to do the reviews. That begs the question of why he was elevated to that position and also a question of why he wasn’t always recruiting for young talent even when Ian and Andrei were there.

I often found Ryan Smith tweeting loads of stuff instead of writing for Anandtech.
