Tulsi Gabbard’s Ideological Shift

I followed Tulsi when she announced her presidential campaign on CNN to Van Jones in January 2019. I was turned off to hear that she was a Bernie Sanders surrogate in 2016, but I was impressed by her foreign policy positions and I like her looking at her (she’s fucking hot). Throughout the years, I’ve noticed that Tulsi forms her views based on different seasons of her life.
Post-Iraq War, she’s consistently been a non-interventionist which was the central theme of her presidential campaign. Her deployment to Iraq motivated her to run for Congress so she could have a national platform to share her experience of being in a war zone. She has been outspoken about the proxy war in Ukraine and has called for a “negotiated outcome” to end the war. Her foreign policy is the main reason why I’m still huge fan of hers today.
When she was a teenager and young adult, she held very conservative positions on abortion and same-sex marriage. She worked for her dad’s gay anti-gay marriage organization that promoted conversion therapy and even successfully protested against same-sex civil unions in the state legislature. However, she cites her military service as the reason she shifted to the left on these issues. She claims to have served alongside LGBTQ service members which is interesting to hear because she enlisted when “Don’t Ask Don’t Tell” was still in effect. She had to apologize for her anti-LGBT past in the early days of her 2020 presidential campaign and even touted a 100% legislative rating from the Human Rights Campaign. I don’t think she hates gay people now, but she has railed against the LGBT agenda after suspending her 2020 presidential campaign. She introduced a bill with a Republican to ban biological men from competing in women’s sports. She even spoke at a forum called “Our Bodies, Our Sports” in 2022. Tulsi even said that “Don’t Say Gay” should apply to all grades, not just K-3.
The political right has eviscerated Tulsi Gabbard for her stance on the 2nd Amendment. They called her “gun grabber” and accused her of being “anti-2A”. These criticisms are not unfounded as she did support an assault weapons ban during her tenure in Congress. She was rightly called out for this when she claimed at the time that she was pro-2A, but supported legislation that would infringe on gun rights. She has slowly become more supportive of gun rights citing the concealed carry law in New Yorn that was struck down by Supreme Court. Tulsi even explained her evolution on this issue with Dave Rubin and Steve Scalise on her own podcast. It’s hard to tell if she has sincerely changed her view on this issue since she’s no longer in Congress.
It seems she has a love-hate relationship with Donald Trump because she wanted to be the Democratic nominee to challenge him to 2020. She called him “Saudi Arabia’s bitch” and said Trump is “unfit” for office. I think she was bitter about not having a Cabinet position in his first term since she mentioned the war hawks who were undermining Trump (Bolton, Pompeo, Haley). She voted “present” on Trump’s first impeachment, and I wonder how she would have voted in the second one. Tulsi has recently endorsed Trump because she knows that Trump would be better than Kamala Harris on foreign policy.
I think Tulsi just voted mostly with the Democrats since she represented a deep blue district in a deep blue state. She played to what her constituency wants which I’m not knocking her for. Her job as a congresswoman was to be the voice for her district, and she did exactly that. I don’t know much about her record in previous offices as a councilwoman and state representative other than her anti-LGBT past. Now that she’s retired from Congress, spends her days as a commentator in conservative media and is now a member of Trump’s transition team, she has taken time to reflect on her views and explore different perspectives. She is no longer handcuffed by her constituents to vote the way they want her to. Tulsi has distanced herself from the left because they treated her like shit. You can’t fault her for talking to people on the right since they’re open to having a conversation with her. I think the incremental exposure to right-wing views and conservative media personalities have shifted her own positions. The insanity of the Biden-Harris administration was the final straw for her to leave the Democratic Party weeks ahead of the 2022 midterm elections.
Some will say she’s a grifter, and they have every right to think that way. I just think she’s a human being who does lot of political introspection. She’s humble enough to realize that she could be wrong on an issue or that she placed herself in a bubble for so long and she’s now free to form her own positions.
PackAttacks@reddit
She said Trump was unfit to run for office and then endorsed him. She’s a grifter.

Or shes 10 chess moves ahead of you

Everything is 10D chess when you’re an idiot.
Ibo-Naw@reddit
I'd love for someone to ask her. What changed about Trump from the moment you endorsed Biden to make you think he's fit to run the country. Because nothing Trump did in office since that moment and since he left office is a convincing argument.
PackAttacks@reddit
If anything, he’s double down on the BS.
quantum0058d@reddit
I'm really disappointed by her stance on Israeli genocide.
Vlad9000@reddit
She realizes that Israel’s fight against the death cult of Hamas is a fight we have to support. Israel has made too many concessions hoping for a peace deal. This will only be done when Hamas is eliminated and when the Iranian ayatollahs are gone.
Captain_JohnBrown@reddit
Non-interventionist unless it is to support a genocide and war with Iran is an unhinged position.
quantum0058d@reddit
Madness.
Don't know where to begin. You obviously subscribe to the notion that arabs are sub human.

Israel is an apartheid state that has been trying to exterminate and steal the lands of non Jewish residents since it's founding as has fomented war in the region. It's trying to stoke war with Iran and in doing so rope a USA into the war.
Vlad9000@reddit
Gaza and Iran are gender and religious apartheid states that have been trying to exterminate Israel since its founding and has fomented wars in the region.
They are currently stoking war with Israel and the US. Iran and their proxies leaders are genocidal monsters who knew the results of Oct 7 but are happy to sacrifice their people as martyrs so to insure the flow of aid money which they will use to buy arms, build tunnels and deposit into their swiss bank accounts.
quantum0058d@reddit
I live in Europe. Zionist colonists went from Europe to Israel and proceeded to steal, slaughter and rape. It is sad. A good friend of mine was from Gaza. I've met many Israeli's and liked three of them
You seem completely uninformed.
Are you aware Israel had 1200 hostages before October 7th?
https://apnews.com/article/israel-detention-jails-palestinians-west-bank-793a3b2a1ce8439d08756da8c63e5435
The Israeli's have a torture camp called Sde Teiman. They're committing genocide and have invited Amekekh. It's sad but they've gone mad. In no way should tulsi be endorsing Israeli genocide. It's wrong.
The two sides should try to make peace but will probably take a hundred years or more to find peace. The US is sadly making things worse for both Israel and Palestine by backing the genocidal maniacs in Israel.
I think you need to read a history book or something.
BugEyedGoblin@reddit
"I live in Europe. Zionist colonists went from Europe to Israel and proceeded to steal, slaughter and rape."
WTF?! thats Hitlerious.
Vlad9000@reddit
Israel was created legally by a vote of the UN in 1947. Also a Palestinian state was offered but rejected and five Arab countries illegally invaded Israel some of which have yet to make peace. Hamas doesn’t want peace. Their leadership gets too rich off of war. Look that up. Hezbollah? Same story.
quantum0058d@reddit
Israel is fighting hard for a war with Iran. Israel has received hundreds of Billions from the USA.

Hezbollahs only demand is an end to the genocide in Gaza.
Vlad9000@reddit
I am quite well informed thank you. Living in Europe doesn’t help your knowledge of the ME. I’ve been to Israel and Gaza. I know the history. By the way whether it matters to you or not the majority of jews in Israel come from the Middle East. Also Arabs make up 20% of Israels population. It is hardly an apartheid state like Gaza. How many jews live in Gaza? Zero.
Miserable-Bit5939@reddit (OP)
Yeah this is the one foreign policy position she has I can’t get behind her on
Chrissyml@reddit
I watched Tulsi do a recent interview where she talked about being the first Democrat to work with Donald Trump as President. She was invited to Trump Tower and said they spent hours talking and Trump did a lot of listening to her opinions on American foreign policy in the Middle East. She said that, as she was leaving Trump Tower,"My phone blew up with messages, texts and phone calls from friends, family and Democrats. They were furious with me. "How dare you humanize him!" I was told."
WholeBlueBerry4@reddit
Yes
& I love Tulsi Gabbard too
But: Trump, Kamala Harris, Vance, are ALL TERRIBLE,
& This endorsement makes her look like just one more_
I wish she had opposed: Trump, Kamala Harris, Vance, Hamas, Natenuahu, Paula White, Kenneth Copeland, religious political leadership,, same as so many know needs to be done,
catchingtherosemary@reddit
Trump is more anti-war than Kamala and there's nothing wrong with her making a practical political move. It's good for the anti-war perspective in general to make smart political alliances. It's no secret she doesn't align with Trump on everything.
pacer502@reddit
Every Iraq war loving neocon that is left is for kamala, there is a reason for that
Ibo-Naw@reddit
Is it really a proxy war? Russia invaded Ukraine for no other reason than, "We want what used to be ours back."
It’s so weird how people keep pushing this “negotiated outcome” rhetoric to end the war. Again, Russia attacked Ukraine. Why should Ukraine negotiate? Russia should just withdraw and go home. Russia is large enough not to be invading former territories. The fact that Tulsi is on the fake side of peace is so phony.
As I have said about humans, and I keep telling people about Tulsi: A 40-year-old person does not drastically shift their ideology. You don’t go from being labeled a progressive, hanging out with Bernie Sanders, and walking with civil rights powerhouses like John Lewis on the Selma bridge to speaking at white nationalist conventions unless you’re doing one thing—grifting. No one here can seriously claim to know a person in real life who was pro-civil rights and then became anti-civil rights unless there’s something financial involved.
How exactly would Trump be better than Kamala Harris on foreign policy? Trump was laughed at on the international stage, he praises dictators and strongmen nonstop, and he was basically like, "F the world, America is the only thing that matters unless it personally benefits me." Oh, and don’t even get me started on his tariff nonsense.
Tulsi is a beautiful woman, so she had that going for her, and she speaks with conviction. People say Tulsi is the same person she always was, but she’s not. I started paying attention to her when she attacked Kamala Harris on the debate stage. I started watching all her YouTube content, her town halls, interviews, and podcasts. If you watched her town halls and video clips, there are moments where she shows so much passion, empathy, and happiness. There are moments where she cried, hugged people, etc. You can’t fake that—she does not have the acting chops to do that. However, her campaign strategies did shift a lot. One week she was independent, the next week she was progressive, and the next week she was moderate. One week she hated buzzwords, and the next minute she was referring to herself as a woman of color. When questioned on things, she would not directly answer a lot of them and just danced around the questions.
I was done with Tulsi when she started introducing regressive legislation and pretending it was about women… that mess about men in women’s sports, and then some Project Veritas or whatever it’s called. I still paid attention to her, and I do, and she has completely shifted. Sure, she still talks about the same topics she talked about years ago—the war, the nuclear arms race, Hillary Clinton, Kamala Harris—but now she’s extremely far right. She uses all the right-wing talking points, talking about anti-white racism and wokeness. Like really? She goes from this https://www.facebook.com/RepTulsiGabbard/posts/3200047190081773 to supporting a man who attempted to overturn an election.
So, Tulsi is one of these things:
A) Always a far-right conservative and played the game until it could no longer be played anymore. B) Was a far-right conservative who evolved once she started being around a more diverse set of people and then, once her career was over and she decided to no longer run for Congress, decided to grift.
I tend to believe she is B because the quick shift happened once she dropped out of the presidential race, and it was known she would no longer run for Congress based on her voting "Present" in the impeachment.
Right-wingers, you might not believe me when I say this, but it’s all an act, and you're being played by Tulsi and many right wing pundits who "left the left." It's easy to play you for a fool because you love being told what you want to hear.
AQMessiah@reddit
I’ve had this argument when the Russia Ukraine war started (last year?), it is unequivocally, 100% a proxy war. This is a text book definition of a proxy war.
I won’t comment on the rest of your post because I only skimmed through it but will say that Tulsi is not far right. It only seems that way because the left has continuously moved their banner into extremism. That’s why you now have people who were lifelong democrats now voting for Trump.
Ibo-Naw@reddit
How is Russia invading Ukraine just because they won't to take back old territory a proxy war? 😂
Ain't no lifelong Democrats voting for Trump. Stop it. 😂
AQMessiah@reddit
Do you know what a proxy war is?
Ibo-Naw@reddit
I asked you a question.
AQMessiah@reddit
DO YOU KNOW THE DEFINITION OF A PROXY WAR?
pacer502@reddit
It's what is happening in Ukraine
Remy0507@reddit
It's a war where a 3rd party supports one of the parties directly involved in a war for the purpose of influencing the outcome to that 3rd party's benefit.
Here's the problem with calling this a proxy war...UKRAINE DIDN'T START IT. And they're not trying to attack Russia. All they're trying to do is defend their own sovereignty.

It became a proxy war. The U.S. is doing the same thing they did in Afghanistan to defeat the Russians in Ukraine- supplying weapons and money.

If you think the Russia Ukraine war might have started "last year," and you were too lazy to even check that out, nobody should take what you have to say about it seriously. You're just spitballing about something you've vaguely heard about.

JoyTimer@reddit
As a conservative hawaiian, I have always supported Tulsi and really wanted her to get the nomination in 2020.
I also like trump. I'm an engineer, and I use logic and facts to back my decision.
If we got Tulsi vs Trump in 2020 I would have voted for Tulsi.
Together, they are a dream time. Come find me on the beach playing slack key with my maga hat on and we can discuss.
HokieFan10@reddit
If you used logic and facts you would not support Trump.
Ibo-Naw@reddit
I'm still laughing at me combating every single thing that person said and his response was... Nope... I don't do internet discussions on a website dedicated to having discussions on the Internet. 😂😂😂
HokieFan10@reddit
My comment wasn’t about your post, but to your post- she has never changed her stances personally, just publicly.
JoyTimer@reddit
Maybe if I used your facts and logic.
Ibo-Naw@reddit
There is no such thing as alternative facts comrade.
JoyTimer@reddit
Welcome back, friend. You are correct. Facts are facts. However, so many facts exist in the world that I could spend my entire life learning facts, and there would still be more. What you have learned so far in your lifetime could vastly differ from what I have learned.
Ibo-Naw@reddit

Indeed. If you want to talk about mathematics, I can answer with responses that you agree with.

Ibo-Naw@reddit

Hold off on the Kool aid friend. Your still pushing points on impeachment, January 6th, and the multitude of political allegations.
That might be the only thing that matters to some people, but as an engineer, I look at real policy. Economy, border security, safety, police and freedom of speech are some of the things I care about.
Ibo-Naw@reddit
Kool aid? Allegations? Which one's are allegations?
Here's some more logic and facts.
I can do this all day.
JoyTimer@reddit
Lol. It's good to know that we have an activist on reddit all day attacking trump. If you wanna have a real debate, come find me playing slack key on the beach with my maga hat. No point in having a discussion with somebody that stealth edits comments.
jagfb@reddit
There is nothing wrong with being a conservative. Or an engineer. But the man gave you clear examples, or facts, about Trump. Either you stay true to what you say and respond to the man. Or you acknowledge that you simply don't care about everything Trump did.
JoyTimer@reddit
Obviously, there is nothing wrong with being an engineer or a conservative. Strange to have to say that. The fact is, for an internet discussion, there is simply too much depth to the subject. A real exchange should be supported with proof and give time for ample discussion.
With how easy it is to have alt-accounts, edit comments, and troll, I have personally come to the conclusion that it is not worth my time to defend my political stance on reddit.
jagfb@reddit
What he said (what I copy pasted below) is true though. So again, either you acknowledge it and respond to it. Or say that you don't care about what he did. I'm not trying to discredit you.
If you don't want to hold political discussions on the internet. Then don't respond to them man...
Ibo-Naw@reddit
I would love for these people to just keep it real and tell me they don't care about anything Trump has said or done, they like him. I'd respect them for that at least. But they don't do that. They come up with all kinds of bs to defend him. Cult-like behavior. Or if it's not a cult, it's like having a favorite musician and defending the bad album they released. 😂
JoyTimer@reddit
The internet is a wonderful place, don't you think? All points can be researched, and the truth can be found. It may be hidden, but it is there for those who seek it.
jagfb@reddit
That is the cringiest thing I have heard this week. Have a good night.
JoyTimer@reddit
Sweet dreams, friend.
Ibo-Naw@reddit
I asked you a question.
JoyTimer@reddit
I hope you have a good day, friend. The internet is a wonderful place full of information, and research lifts the veil on controversy.
Ibo-Naw@reddit
Look at you deflecting because you don't know how to combat the nonsense you posted lol. Don't worry, you're not alone in that regard in this sub, so don't feel like you have no one to lean on when it comes to deflecting.
JoyTimer@reddit
Thank you for the supportive comment. It's good to know that there are lots of like minded people that don't want to debate on the internet.
Ibo-Naw@reddit
The internet debate avoidance club—where the motto is ‘Why talk like adults when you can just deflect?’ Always refreshing to see such commitment to not discussing the issues. 👍
JoyTimer@reddit
You should try a debate irl. It's much better.

I'm sorry to hear that you haven't been able to have a real debate with "maga people". Come find me on the beach and we can have a real debate. We can watch videos, read articles, present both sides, and discuss until we agree to disagree, or hopefully, become real friends.
Ibo-Naw@reddit
There are no both sides to facts.

1: I personally feel from my own anecdotes that I was better off during Trump presidency for the economy. However it’s not a huge factor for me as I’m definitely willing to point out that Bidens economy suffered from inheriting a COVID economy.
2: Just wanted to point out that there were numerous critics of the bills not being good enough for border control. Just saying that maybe the bill was shot down because of what was in the bill. And not because they wanted to save that win for trump. And to prove that look at bill HR2 from 2023, EVERY democrat voted against that bill. The existence of that bill shows how disingenuous it is to say that republicans in congress aren’t trying to secure the border bc they want trump to campaign on it.
https://archive.ph/sNljN
3+4: I’m pro 2A and dont feel like arguing about that right now lol.
5: That is one thing Trump stated that I disagree with. However Tim Walz said that 1A doesnt cover misinformation and hate speech. I’m sorry that is a fundamental misunderstanding on what free speech should be. How about the biden administration pressuring Meta and Twitter to censor the hunter biden laptop story and Covid “misinformation” including humor about covid. Trumps remarks on burning the flag pale in comparison to the rest of the fire the 1A has been facing.
Ibo-Naw@reddit
I hear this a lot. What exactly did Trump do when he was President that made your life better? All he bragged about was the stock market the entire time. He didn't do anything special for the middle or lower class. His tax bill was for the rich. Sure we got an extra $10 on tax returns, big whoop. lol.
The Republicans literally killed the bill once Trump told them to kill it. Many of the people in the Senate said so. It's not because of the bill, it's because Trump said to kill it. https://www.nbcnews.com/politics/congress/senate-republicans-block-border-security-bill-campaign-border-chaos-rcna153607 https://thehill.com/homenews/senate/4459861-trump-praises-collapse-of-bipartisan-border-deal/ https://apnews.com/article/congress-ukraine-aid-border-security-386dcc54b29a5491f8bd87b727a284f8 https://thehill.com/homenews/senate/4451977-mcconnell-dealt-blow-by-trump-on-border-bill/
What does Walz have to do with this? He's not running for President. As far as the Biden administration. There's a huge difference from what someone said someone tried to do and what someone ACTUALLY SAID and did.

plebbtard@reddit
Seeing her endorse Trump was incredibly disheartening. Just a complete and utter betrayal of everything she claimed to stand for previously.
It especially sucks because everything she has done the past few years just completely vindicates all the Bernie bros who called her a right wing grifter and said she was “just gonna join Fox News as soon as she’s out of office”
I just feel played for ever supporting her.

Looking back at Tulsi's political change from punch drinking cult member to Obama loyalist to Bernie supporter to independent to Trump supporter...... a lot can be explained if you look at the gradually shifting political affiliation of Hindu nationalists in general and Hindu Americans in particular. They were a loyal Democrat voting block. Modi and Obama were besties constantly praising each other, even after Obama's presidency.
If you're looking for the turning point in Tulsi's career when she began shifting to the right, it might have been around the time of the Howdy Modi event in Houston, when it started to become apparent that a large portion of the Hindu American community was migrating to Trump AND that the ideological affiliation of hindu nationalists globally was shifting to the right. Since then, Hindu nationalism has become more mainstream both in India and among emigrants. It seems plausible to me that the people in Tulsi's Science of Identity group may have undergone a similar political shift, which no doubt impacted Tulsi.
Ibo-Naw@reddit
Never heard Trump praise anything not white EVER in a non racist way. He refers to Black people as The Blacks, The Black people, Black jobs, my African American over there. Let's not get started on Chinese folk during 2020. Oh and his fave go to, the Mexicans. If Hindu Americans feel as they're immune to the slander, then I got a unicorn wearing a MAGA hat for sale.
beavis617@reddit
Talk about changing positions....right now MAGA is attacking Kamala Harris for changing positions...well, what about Lindsey Graham, Little Marco Rubio, Ted Cruz..and most recently Nikki Haley.
