I think the more accurate definition is close to or adjacent. Like you get in paramedic, paralegal and paramilitary

You know what, I never even thought about it in terms of meaning! I just thought of it as ‘Paralympics’ as an entire word just like I’d think of Olympics the same way, never thought to split it.
