GenX here. I quit my job in the 2000s to go back to school, and my 2024 self thanks tha guy every day. Don't give up when challenges arise (illness, car breaking down, having to work overtime). Power through and get that cert.

Check with your local/county school controlling board. In PA they're called Intermediate Units and there's one in each county. They offered sub certs to anyone with a bachelor's degree and a clean background/fingerprint check. They ran the seminars twice per school year when I got mine. If you're looking for full time teaching positions, get the state cert. I will say that school in my late 20s/early 30s was way easier to focus on than when I went right outta high school. A quick wit, sense of humor, and a sharp tongue go a long way when subbing.

Thanks! I have a master's degree in history but failed to break into the museum field. I've been working retail since then. I have basically considered two ideas- going for a master's degree in library science and becoming a librarian, or becoming a paralegal. I leaned towards this, especially because there's a night school I can attend 2 night classes a week with over 48 weeks. I recently received a small inheritance and I thought this would be a good way to spend my money. I wanted to go back to school, just not anything that would cost me another student loan.

GenX here. I only did a semester of college out of High school, but I learned how to do PC work on my own. I spent the late 80's through mid 2000's doing various tech production work and PC repairs. Mid 2000's I was about your age. I went to tech school for medical and crushed it. I had math, physics, speech, English, and a ton of anatomy and physiology classes. Some tech schools offer remedial (noncredit) free classes. I took a free Biology and Algebra class as a refresher and to see how my brain would respond.

I also felt like being older, I took the curriculum more serious than the "kids" in the class. There were three other "old" guys in my class and we all teamed up. I felt we had a good system of working together because we all had life experience and took learning serious. We all made it through and three out of the four passed the CA bar on the first try. Not bad for some old guys!

I'm currently getting a Master's Degree online in that same field in my 40s. that's more of a mixed bag. I'm not crazy about doing everything through online courses, but it was my only option with my work schedule.

Paralegal here! Have you tried seeking a job in the field with the skills you already have? I have an associates in paralegal studies myself, but lots and lots of my co-workers don't and the first lawyer who hired me didn't care that I had the degree, he just cared that I could read and write well and had a sincere interest in the field. Unless you're in CA, or a few other limited places, paralegals don't require any kind of education or licensing (which is actually kind of crazy).

I also went back to school in my 30s. I wasted my 18 years with liberal arts. Having no idea how badly it would kneecap my ability to earn wealth and live a happy life. I wound up enrolling in a community college in engineering with the intent of transferring for a bachelors. It was really weird. Everyone around me was in their late teens and early twenties. I pushed through it and now here I am with an engineering degree making six figures. Going back to school is absolutely worth it!

I’m usually the oldest in the workshops, but I don’t care at all, and I’ve met some nice folks. I never plan to stop, my dad is the same, in his 60s and still takes classes. We love in-person learning and see learning as a life-long hobby.

I did my underground with a psychology major and philosophy minor, then did the masters in clinical mental health counseling I started making more money as soon as I graduated with my ba (I went from juvenile corrections to case management). That took me thru grad school because I could work partly from home. Then, after the masters graduation, I got a job at a school as a counselor, which took me thru registered internship. Then I got licensed and went private practice. If I had done it sooner, I would've done a phd. But I make decent money now.

I plan to become an amateur luthier. I'll fix guitars in my garage while smoking copious amounts of marijuana, listening to music, and smiling at my dog. I did my MA before teaching, and truly loved it. I hope you enjoy the experience. I did a stint as a Seconded Professor for 8 years, which was more than enough to discourage me from pursuing that any further. Lol. I'm fortunate that my teaching career includes an incredible pension. Freedom 55 1/2 for me. :)

Good for you! I'm proud of you! At 38, I changed careers. Went from a good healthcare job to my dream job of being a truck driver. It was a good move at a bad time. The height of the 2008 recession and a divorce had me returning to my healthcare job. I excelled with a new company and, after 13 years, decided to return to return to school and get my degree. My 56 year old brain isn't as quick as it used to be but I did it. Keep going and good luck, you can do it!

Did you decide on the 1-year or 6-month courses? I did the UCLA program, class of 2012, did an internship for a year, then got hired at a big firm, and I'm now 42, so I've been doing this for a long time now. I was a bit younger than you, but it was a tough decision. I really needed the work so invested in this. I decided to go into intellectual properties. Unfortunately, almost nothing I learned had to do with IP. A chapter or two maybe, in the properties textbook. Mainly, the certification I got just made it easier for me to find a job. I learned 99% of everything at my job. Paid off that loan fairly quickly too.

Doing a 11-month certificate offered by the college I got my bachelor's in history from. I got a small inheritance which I am using for this instead of my original plan to pay off my car. It's two days a week which shouldn't be too much. I'm keeping my part time retail job at a movie theater. The good thing is that this hits on "slow days" so I shouldn't get too much pushback. As for what you're saying, it does track with what other people said that you mainly do learn on the job.

I did back in 2019 at 41. I obtained an accounting certificate, as I wasn't sure if I wanted to commit to an actual degree program. I completed it a year later. I feel it's helped me land the job I've been at the past few years now (one of the reasons I did it was due to long-term unemployment). I'm now pushing 47, and am considering going for the degree. Between the certificate courses and the credits from the degree I obtained in 2000, I'm not too far off. If I'm completely honest, I wish I went that route a decade before I did. Also being older made me appreciate what I had to do academically far more than the 18 - 22 year old me when I had my first go at higher education. Go into the program with a positive attitude, a willingness to put in the work, and you'll be fine.

A friend of mine did this maybe 7-8 years ago. She had an art degree she didn’t really use and had just been working at Starbucks for a couple decades, even started there in high school. Did an accelerated program and was done in 16 months. Got hired in at the local county circuit court and learned the job doing criminal and civil cases. The pay and benefits are great, she will have a pension and she just got promoted since her judge is retiring soon. Prob the best thing she’s ever done financially for her life so I’d say go for it.

Secondary education is for people of all ages and backgrounds. I think I was 38 or 39 when I graduated with my associates and got my paralegal certificate. If you are also taking general ed classes, you will be working with younger students. Paralegal classes are usually mixed, with people who already work in the office or people who are looking to make a career change. r/paralegal has lots of good info and understandings of the minutia of working in a law office. One thing I would like to say about schooling at an older age is to not let your ego cloud the experience. Older students have a habit of either thinking they are smarter or more experienced, but lots of younger people/students have also been around the block. Go to class prepared, keep up with technology and try not too rattle off on life advice. Everyone just wants to pass the class and get good grades and be out. You will be good, education is a great way to advance in life. Depending on your location paralegal work is generally high in demand. Focus on the end goal, study (I liked using quizlet) and you should be good!

I'm a paralegal! I went back in 2016 for my Paralegal degree- I used my Bachelors towards the gen ed of the Associates for it, just did the Paralegal stuff. My then-boss (now retired) made me a deal- I pay for and go to school, he'd buy my books, then when complete I'd be his paralegal (pay raise from legal secretary). School was a lot like riding a bike, it took a second, but then I fell back into routine. I'm glad I did it, I'm a paralegal, my old boss retired, but I got to stay with the firm and I now work for a different attorney, and switched from civil litigation/insurance defense to transactional, real estate, business contracts and some estate planning, which I really like. But I am officially completely done with formal education, now. I love learning, but I'm over formal education. You can totally do it! Ask all the questions you need, you're there to learn and be taught. Law is a lot at first, but it all builds on itself, and it's incredibly repetitive. Law looks back to what came before (stare decisis, there's your legal vocabulary for the day). It's incredibly formulaic. Once you get that formula, you can apply it to just about everything.

I really like estate planning. I did my own stuff myself after doing a bunch for clients. I really hate probate. Just personal preference, there's nothing wrong with it. But unfortunately we have a few probate matters so I've been doing a few. Same with family law- I won't touch that with a ten foot pole (though, somehow, I've helped two different relatives with their divorces, lol). I got burnt out on litigation, but there's a lot of variation so it's often pretty interesting. I originally did construction defect (represented the subcontractors via their insurance companies), then did mostly car accidents (sometimes interesting, I learned stuff from the big ones with accident reconstruction and forensic engineering experts, but mostly it was rear ended in a parking lot at 2 mph and now claiming the moon), slip and falls, and the occasional industrial accident (those were incredibly interesting).

I will say, going back to a physical campus of any kind and taking classes with people 18-25 years younger than you, will always be a different experience than online only. But it's all subjective anyway and really depends on many different factors. If being around young people will make you cringe and make you feel unrelatable/out of touch, take online only.

Just a word of caution - when you're looking for certification, try to see if it's a role than can be outsourced or improved by technology. I just interviewed for a company that does AI for law firms and in house legal departments. The technology quickly does the work of a paralegal. No clue if this tech is widely used or not but something to consider.

I went to 3 years of law school starting at 40. You’ll be fine. 6-7 years from now it would be an issue, because then you wouldn’t be able to get in 3-5 years of learning the job and a full 20 year career to boot, but at 39 you’ll be fiiiine. And if you’ve ever had a full time job where you had to work and support yourself, school is dead easy.

I’m a grad student and see older students ALL THE TIME. People in their 30s, 50s, even 70s, and they all seem to enjoy it and get loads of support from other students and faculty. If you’re nervous, or think you won’t fit in or whatever, don’t be. Enjoy the opportunity and journey! It’s worth it.

I went back to community and then state college at 35. It was surprisingly easy, I found myself much more disciplined and able to study and learn the material. As opposed to in my twenties where I did enough to pass but was more focused on which bar/party to attend that night. Good luck op!

It is very challenging, but somehow, I'm doing it! Summer was especially tough because it's 16 weeks of content stuffed into only eight weeks. I teach adult ed. The best thing about adult learners is that you know your motivations and you know yourself better than you did at 18. You know why you are going back to school. You have clear career goals. That is your motivation. When things get down, or hard, or overwhelming, picture yourself thriving in your new career. This schooling is just the hurdle you need to get yourself there. Focus on getting through it. Also, at this point in your life you know your strengths and weaknesses. You know your other obligations. Be upfront about them. Like, if you’ve struggled in the past with deadlines, or staying motivated, or completion, put that out in the world and build a support system for it. It could be friends, family, your educational peers, instructors. People will support you if you just reach out a bit.

I did it a couple years ago, then decided to go back to my old career because I missed it. What I learned is that my ability to take notes with paper and pencil and my ability to study textbooks gave me a huge advantage over the younger students. I personally retain so much when I take handwritten notes during lectures. I hope our old school school helps you as well!

When I was 37 I went back to college and got a B.S. in Business Administration. Fortunately I was able to transfer some credits from an earlier stint at a community college to save some time and cost. What I'll say is that a lot of the math and science related stuff is still challenging, but life and work experience made a lot of the other stuff easy. For me, it just boiled down to prioritizing making time for it and keeping myself motivated. I didn't make a career change out of it, but I was already working as a project manager and the degree makes it easier for my boss and his bosses to justify promoting me.

I was more focused, more able to manage time, more responsible, and a few years of life experience I could apply to what I was studying. I know the saying is you can’t teach an old dog new tricks, but I think we’re in prime years to learn something new. Take the best lessons from the past and apply them to the future, just have to keep an open mind.

I started my undergrad at 25, took 5 years. Started a PhD program at 30, left after 2 years due to undiagnosed (at the time) ADHD and not having accommodations. Didn’t want anything to do with school until 38 when I found an online masters program on disability services in higher ed. About to start my final semester in the program. It’s 100% worth it to go back to school. Routines are really important as well ask asking for help when needed. Don’t be shy about office hours or emailing your professors. I'm of the belief that it's never too late to go back to school. I went back at 31, as did my wife. Absolutely made the difference in our careers. I always pushed my dad to go back to school. He went to junior college when he was younger and got his HVAC certificate, but after he started his own business and sold it he never worked in HVAC and he was working for the gas company for 25 years. The one thing that held him back was that he didn't have his bachelors, so I was always telling him to go back to school, but he always said "I'm too old for that." He did eventually break into management, but it was the top out role that he would have ever been able to get without a bachelors. His boss? Went back to college in his 40s and got his bachelors and made like twice what my dad did.

I’m a couple years older than you and went back to school after a workplace injury when I was around 35. Definitely the right choice. Got an internship, graduated and rolled right into a full time position. That’s just to say it’s always worth the effort to go after something you want.
