I've known two females who believed they would, if evil came, be able to defend themselves with bats. I challenged them with this:
Here is a foam nerf bat. Not only will you probably not be able to hit me (unless you ambush me), but any hits you manage to land will be inconsequential. Neither of them were able to hit me. It was easy to either close distance or to step back, based on their motion. Fortunately one of them took the CCW course with me earlier this year.
Anybody who thinks that a bat is viable indoors outside of an ambush context is fully immersed into a fantasy.
Exactly, the bat is a force multiplier but 0 times anything is still zero, 10 times a really small number is still a really small number. The only way the bat is helping you is if you were already reasonably capable of beating someone to death with your fists, if you are not then the bat will do nothing to help you.
True, but a spear in a narrow hallway can still get stuck in a wall if you miss, especially in the US with all their drywall shit. I'd prefer something like a spartan xiphos.
Why not a small chainsaw? Loud as shit, intimidating, and nobody in their right mind is going to go up against a dude with a chainsaw in close quarters. You ain’t grabbing shit nor will have fingers left to grab anything again if you do try to yoink that chainsaw.
I realized the overall ineffectiveness of melee weapons as a defence tool when I got into a fight with my roommate and he grabbed a machete. As he was yelling and wildly swinging I could see how slow the windup and recovery was for each swing and figured he might be able to hit me once, at best, before I would be too close for him to hit. Before I could even try I noticed some onlookers with their phones out and that made me immediately "nope" the fuck out of there since I figured *someone* had to have called the cops by then. Come to find out later that machete's edge was about as sharp as a fucking butterknife and would have caused more blunt force injury than anything.
Yeah, I ended up moving 2 weeks after that. It's weird, once you get in a machete fight in a goodwill parking lot you no longer want to be around that person anymore.
I’ve asked people who plan on using a bat or their sword 😂 in a home invasion if they have ever swung something like that inside a house. They never consider how narrow hallways are and how low the average ceiling is. They obviously have not considered how those things can hinder the ability to swing a melee weapon that is over a certain length.
I had a friend who had this attitude, I gave her a baseball bat and told her she could hit me as hard as she wanted, but I was going to hit her as hard as I wanted.
I handed her the bat. She is 5'4 and about 110lbs, I am 6ft and about 210 lbs.
I asked if she was ready, and she just stood there and eventually dropped the bat.
She now owns a snub nose .357 and we go to the range together once a month.
most people dont realize how chatotic fast and brutal self defense scenarios are. especially since no one is ever expecting them usually and it takes the brain a few seconds to get into fight or flight mode. this person will close the distance on them in a house in a second and even if they grab the sock off will drop it and re-grab the bat in half a second
I’ve been doing historical fencing for quite a while, and even athletic men who understand they’re trying to hit a real person (in gear and will do no damage) pull their hits and are bad at timing and distance management.
It would take just as much if not significantly more training to be competent in a life or death situation with a bat (or other blunt weapon) than with a firearm.
Even though I’ve done it for years and I’ve been to proper tournaments and done decently well, if someone said I had to defend myself with a sword I would be terrified.
Cut the bat in half the short way, then stuff your rifle inside. Hook wires from the large end of the bat to the trigger. Cover with the sock.
They tug on the happy sock they get the Glock. They tug on your nice stiff bat… they get the action they want… 🤪
In a world where your best option is available, it is irrational to choose not to have it. Can’t help those who are not able to get a gun, but everyone else has no excuse.
People who are controlled by irrational fears have no excuse. Get over it. Buy a safe, teach your kids to respect dangerous things, boom everything solved.
Choosing to continue to be irrational when you have the choice not to be is not laudable.
Also, I’m into eating ass but since you’re probably a dude I’ll pass. Double pass because furries weird me out.
When did I say I was speaking on behalf of everyone? I own firearms. I just know and you know too that most people don’t want them. It’s not irrational to always be around a weapon like that.
And if you can’t eat a dudes ass too then youre incredibly weak.
> When did I say I was speaking on behalf of everyone?
About right here:
> Most people especially parents arnt comfortable with firearms.
Kind of a dumb question to ask when you literally just did speak for most people right there.
> It’s not irrational to always be around a weapon like that.
I agree, I’m not even sure why you would have to make this statement.
> I just know and you know too that most people don’t want to them.
I don’t know that. I can’t name a household I know of that doesn’t have one. Also, get back to me when people stop lying about not owning guns on surveys. I’ve never admitted to it, and neither has anyone I know. It’s an issue with self reported survey data, especially on sensitive topics.
> And if you can’t eat a dudes ass too then youre incredibly weak.
Also the hypocrisy of calling me weak for having a valid sexual preference is just astoundingly funny. I’m straight. It’s okay if you aren’t. I wouldn’t call you weak for being bi, it’s equally valid. I just think anthropomorphism is weird, especially in a sexual context.
Are you saying most people arnt comfortable with it isn’t factual? And that’s surprising you’ve never met a household that isn’t comfortable with them, outstanding odds really.
As for you finding that stuff weird, then okay. I think some BDSM stuff is weird but that doesn’t make it valid for them. And I wasn’t making fun of you for being straight, that was obvious joke. What ever you like sexually then cool.
As for the conspiracy theory with the surveys, well I’m not sure what to even say there. lol. You can’t wish everyone loved guns as much as me and you but that doesn’t make it reality.
Ive owned guns for a while and I’ve never once gotten whatever survey you’re even talking about. I’ve moved all over too from liberal California to the Deep South in Georgia.
If anything I get asks me why would I lie if it’s legal?
So ur telling me I put a sock on my bat to prevent them from getting hold of it? But if they got hold of it the first time what stopping the second time?
A better question is, "Why would I want to get that close to an intruder?"
My firearm is a ranged weapon. It does wonders for stopping a threat while keeping me at a distance where they can not grab my weapon.
I don’t remember if it’s only if you carry it in public or if it applies at home to, but from what I remember about British self defense law, anything that you could intend to use as a weapon, legally is a weapon. If you were to post this video about a cane that you walk with, it would be used to prove that you’re cane is a weapon and that you’re committing a crime by carrying your cane in public.
If you have a self defense bat in Britain, you better fucking keep a glove and a ball nearby too
By that logic everyone with hands and feet are criminals carrying illegal weapons, since they can be used to punch and kick. Completely ridiculous, and a terrible way to live.
A highpoint is like a hundred bucks + maybe a $150 for a few hundred rounds of 9mm ball and 20 rounds of JHP+ $50 on range fees for a couple trips to practice= about $300. I got that's a lot of money for many people but I figure most people can do that if they make it a priority.
I usually recommend a Rossi/H&R/etcetera single-shot 410 or 20 gauge if funds are a serious problem and/or they don't want something that's capable of several shots without reloading for moral/ideological(?) reasons. In other words, they don't want it to be stolen, for example, and used to kill ot injure 3-5+ people in the case of the vast majority of pump shotguns capacity or something because then it'd be on their conscience since they, indirectly & unwillingly, provided the weapon that was used to perpetrate said scenario. I don't personally think the same way, but it's a real mindset that some do have and ive found a single shot or maybe an over and under/double barrel usually has a higher chance of getting them to consider it with legitimate seriousness as opposed to pump actions or autoloaders and what not. I also implore them to get some GOOD bear or pepper spray thats in like the full/large sized handle set instead of the little keychain/purse sized small containers (although for mobile/out & about I don't knock the small ones fkr those situations) to use a backup/distraction to buy time to reload another shell if need-be. There's much better/more effective options out there, I know, but this seems to be a good way to get someone hesitant about it to at least consider it and "open the door" so to speak more than it would have/would be usually.
A bat lets you put at least a little distance between you and your target. And while it doesn't serve as much of a force multiplier for a weaker person, any weapon is better than no weapon.
I'd actually say that it's worse than no weapon because, if they didn't have a weapon, they'd have to go get a real weapon.
If the bat is filling the weapon role then they don't really have a weapon but think they have a weapon.
It'd be like in an RPG game where you have a weapon slot and you equip a broom instead of something useful.
In this scenario running is the better weapon lol. Call it a hunch but most people probably don’t live in houses big enough to allow a bat to be used effectively.
A bat in a house is not optimal too much shit in the way of a good swing. Either get a gun or a six or eight pack of Campbell's soup and keep them in your room. If an intruder brakes in just start slinging soup cans. I'd almost rather being shot than being hit in the head with a full can of soup.
>hit in the head with a full can of soup.
You're assuming that in the full adrenaline dump mode that they can aim those cans to land anywhere specific.
Black powder is legal for everybody (felons too) and conversion kits to shoot “modern” undercharged smokeless rounds exist and depending on the revolver don’t cost that much, the revolvers themselves are very inexpensive.
That girl could swing that bat at me as many times as she wants and there is no scenario where I leave even remotely injured. If she had a shotgun, there is no scenario where I even leave alive. I know a guy who isn’t allowed to own guns (felon) who has a crossbow by his nightstand, it’s at least something. Also has a sword which is hilarious to think about
The Handy lifehack is to not swing the bat like you are going for a homerun because it allows too much of an open arc for someone to grab it. Instead, you basically poke it swift and hard. And buying a firearm or resorting to a firearm isn't the end all answer you think it is because there are great reasons why soldiers learn hand to hand combat and are given edged weapons.
Did it ever occur to you that hand to hand is taught in the event of being disarmed? Meaning that you should be using a firearm instead of your fisticuffs because they’re not as good of a weapon…
Yes, poke with a heavy, blunt object. Excellent choice.
And soldiers are barely trained in hand to hand as a way to survive and recover a firearm. They aren't ninjas going around a battlefield slicing up the enemy troops. I work with about a dozen former service members from all branches. They all say the unarmed combat training is doo-doo.
Best idea if all you have is a bat is an escape route. Unless you’re John wick. Melee weapons overwhelming get taken and used against the defender. Firearms scare the attacker off a majority of the time and because they’re distance weapons that require less skill and very little strength or stamina to use they’re statistically far less likely to be taken by an attacker than melee weapons
Meh. Kinda some made up nonsense TBH. It seems like a clever idea on the surface, but the reality is, that’s not how someone is actually going to grab your bat, and if having the barrel of your bat grabbed is a concern, you are using it so ineffectively that its an irrelevant tool anyways.
TBH, a full sized bat probably isn’t that great a choice in most peoples homes anyways, in terms of how much room they have to work with.
A short barreled bat (SBB) is much more deadly and too concealable, so it requires some special paperwork to acquire one, and you can’t move it across state lines without pre-authorization.
Great now I have this mental picture in my head of somebody carrying around one of those tiny little bats you get at baseball games in a CCW position lol
The reality is they don’t have to grab your bat when they’re blitzing you like an NFL defensive lineman and knock you on your ass or grab your hands/the handle, or just stab you or something
>TBH, a **full sized bat** probably isn’t that great a choice in most peoples homes anyways, in terms of how much room they have to work with.
At least you don't have to fill out forms and fork over $200 to shorten your baseball bat. But that's the only real plus.
>you are using it so ineffectively
I think you may be giving too much credit to the general population. Plenty of people out there just don't have any tactical thinking, they've probably not even considered what might or might not work in a certain situation, so the likelihood that someone might have their defensive bat grabbed is probably a lot higher than we would hope (because people are dumb, especially when panicked), it might just give them a chance to recover and save themselves. Obviously, a bat, or any swinging blunt weapon, is far from ideal in the vast majority of situations, but if it's all you have then it's what you're going to use. Besides, the sock wouldn't make the user any less effective, so why not.
Thats my point, they haven’t considered what would work which is why they probably don’t realize this is nonsense. But it IS nonsense.
I’ve heard the old “put a sock on it” clever nonsense many times.
What I’m saying is
A If someone is trying to hurt you, and they can walk up and grab your bat, then you weren’t really swinging it at them. You were either swinging it so weak and slow as to be totally pointless, or (likely) you were just holding it, as if shaking a bat at them was supposed to scare them off.
(Look at this girl holding the bat. Even in tik tok demo mode, she clearly doesn’t know how to hold the thing properly for a swing hard enough to hurt anyone)
B look at where she is standing for the little “ha!” Second chance sock escape nonsense.
There’s no distance. If someone is close enough to be grabbing the bat, and they do the little sock snatch, they’re still close enough that you can’t seing the bat again. They’re within one step. They can immediately step into your arm length.
Meaning, 1 you don’t have room to get a good swing in. 2 they’re close enough to block your arms, or grab your wrists, or just rip it out of tour hands at the hands, or just grab YOU by the face, hair, neck, etc. They’re already all over you before you can do anything with that bat.
Th me entire mindset of this “yank the bat out and you got them” idea is based in some TV mental exchange where the bad guy just kinda grabs the bat, and then just stands there, making “villain face” and waiting while you respond. This shit might work on an NPC, but not on a human.
And here I am running a 9mm pistol inside because I don't like the clearance of rifles indoors. Yeah a long bat is not ideal inside for sure. However I will admit, some crazy girl running at me with her heart print stocking on a baseball bat might make me rethink my life choices....
When my wife and I started dating, I noticed an aluminum softball bat in the corner of her room. I asked her to slo-mo show me how she would swing it at an intruder and got a good laugh.
It’s not tho. The bat slipping out of their hands just means they have two free hands to hit or grab you with while you’re still reeling back your bat. As a general rule, don’t take self defense advice from the internet
Right?
It would be pretty simple to disarm her even if I was unarmed. I might get a few bruises, but I know she's not gonna win unless I'm taken by surprise and I get my skull smashed in.
Guns work much better for this type of thing.
Or just use the correct technique against someone with a bat and get inside the striking zone so when you do go take control of it you’re grabbing below the sock, closer to her grip, and you can just force it out of her hand. Now you have the sock bat.
Did you see the way she held the bar to swing it? Chances are the intruder would have time to pull the sock off and grab the bat again after the first swing.
The whole thought process of not wanting to use a firearm because it's too violent. However bludgeoning someone to death is okay. Of course they aren't actually planning to use the melee weapon they are hoping to bluff their way out the confrontation.
The reality is that there are people out there who can not be bluffed, they can not be reasoned with, that can not be threatened, they will not back down. If someone comes at you in an altered state of mind be it rage, drugs, mental instability within seconds your only option to defend your life is to stop them with lethal forces. Which means you won't have time to talk or to brandish your weapon, you have to act.
Personally if forced to defend myself with lethal force I prefer to pull a trigger rather than bludgeon, stab or slash if at all possible. Every option is on the table in that emergency though.
Yep. People always have a fantasy of how a violent attack will go in their minds. They have (generally) NO training in reaction let alone taking action, nor do they realize how fast it all usually happens.
You have seconds to decide and respond. Any longer and it’s usually too late. The bad guy will have a bat AND your sock.
Then what? Tissues???
People have absolutely no idea how much it truly takes to beat someone to death. It isn’t like the movies. There are sound effects associated with it that I’m personally really not up for unless it really is life or death.
Yeah it's not like TV and Movies where you can karate chop someone on the back of the neck and they pass out for 3-10 hours completely unresponsive.
You CAN kill someone with a single blow from a baseball bat. Reality is once you start that fight you need to be ready to finish it. In a real brawl whether it be melee weapons or fist it comes down to strength and stamina. Tweakers have more strength and stamina than you do.
Sounds like you're talking about GG Allin. Dude was an absolute maniac. Punk rocker that died of an overdose but not before becoming famous for shitting on stage, rolling in it, wiping it on his body and then going into the audience naked to try to fight people.
Youtube it. Shitty videos - I think it was early 90s. There was documentary about him and he was on Geraldo's (?) talk show. The dude thought he was a god if I recall correctly.
She's getting warmer, but there is an option that doesn't let them get in grabbing distance. Imagine if you will, a device that can defend you from a would-be attacker and send a "bat" to their location while keeping you safely out of harms way.
Hollow aluminum bats are not good self-defense tools. If you're not using a gun, then it needs to be something solid and heavy. The only time I would use a bat is if it was the old steel bat my grandpa kept on his front porch, that thing would crack your head open in one swing. We kids found out it does not feel good hitting a softball with that bat, it sent a shockwave that would hurt your hands.
I recently moved out on my own(male in his 20s). Having a firearm in the house really makes me sleep way better at night. Every american household should have some-type of firearm for home defense.
To Reiterate what a previous commentor said, something to keep in mind when you take it to the range or back yard is to run through drills of gun malfunctions. My everyday carry is a rock island .45 with laser and ten round mags. I've had issues with ammo types, magazines, and the laser itself. I now finally am confident in what I carry. The same goes for my at home. Depending on the scenario I've got my ar 15 or my maverick 88 (which if you're balling on a budget and need a home defense shotgun I cannot recommend enough)
Buy a 100 round box of Winchester white box....You're guaranteed to get atleast one dud in there. So that way you have a designated training dud to load in your mags at random for malfunction drills.
To be fair, many people already have a bat so it's free, and unlimited ammo. In the absence of the ideal options and/or funding, you could do worse than an aluminum bat.
*I promise I could*
*Still take that bay away first*
*Try in an instant*

Yup. That specific sock. I’m doing a forensic breakdown of the video to figure out where to find it. If I was as motivated in my professional life as I am in making this happen I’d be the boss.
Jesus christ kid. Based on physical presence and just how she holds that thing, if someone is clos enough to grab that bat they’re close enough to strangle that kid without thinking twice about the bat.
1000 IQ prank, frat pledge pretends to be burglar, told to steal sorority pledges stockings
realizes how easy first attempt was
goes back for second attempt
also takes bat, uses in greek week softball game
Legalities of firearm ownership aside, I’m always amused by the moral superiority people sometimes hold when they say guns are too violent/deadly, but then are more than willing to potentially bash someone’s skull in with a blunt object.
People don't seem to realize that it's really difficult to neutralize an adrenaline-motivated threat with a blunt weapons. And if they have a knife or a gun you're fucked
I don't think those people intend to use it that far. I think their hope is it will be a non lethal bluff. They don't actually intend to use it in most cases.
Delusional woman.
If your swing is proper no one will be able to grab the bat with their hands, if you need a sock to deal with the bat being pulled away, your swing sucks.
This also assumes it even works at all. Bats are tapered so if you grip hard enough and pull (like you probably would be if you were trying to disarm someone hitting you with something), it seems equally likely that you would still manage to just yank the bat of out her hands.
They dont even need a weapon. Unless her first swing is a massive dinger right to the head, a bat is going to be rendered completely useless as soon as the woman is rushed and tackled.
Because violently beating someone to death, breaking their bones and beating them to a pulp is a preferable alternative to just shooting them for these people, suffering=ok
So what's the plan after the attacker grabs the sock off the bat and rushes forward toward the intended victim? Now the attacker is on you. You need space to swing.
Isn’t this also intent to do harm? A lawyer will say you purposefully planned to murder or harm someone because nobody keeps a sock on their bag for baseball.
why not put a sock on her front doorknob and prevent the intruder from being able to get in.
see, he tries to turn the knob but the sock keeps slipping...boom, don't even need the bat.
Her plan is when she fails to neutralize her assailant and he/she tries to disarm her, the sock comes off.
then what? she's in the exact same position she was 10 seconds earlier. she still has an assailant, she still has an ineffective weapon she can't effectively use, and she's down a sock
What happens if they grab it twice?
It kind of seems that if you are swinging a bat, and ostensibly hitting them with it; that if they are still coherent enough to grab the bat and pull it from you. You probably aren't going to be able to bring them down with the bat.
Pointless advice. If I'm swinging a bat as hard as I can and that person is able to just stop my swing and grab the sock off, I've got bigger problems then trying to swing again. Plus, if you actually try this, the sock just flies off mid motion.
I think that most people decide to purchase or carry a gun after the first time they needed a gun but didn’t have one
I certainly did
Back around 25 years ago
Pass. Why would you limit yourself to a close combat weapon when you don’t have to. That’s a very poor strategy. You’d prefer to armed with a less efficient weapon that also is not useful with multiple people attacking you or someone stronger than you, and the thought process is guns are bad, yet you want to beat someone to death with a baseball bat, knife, or some other type of weapon that is realistically less effective and way more dangerous to your own survival in a self defense or break in. On top of the fact it’s a lot more difficult and a lot more gruesome to kill someone like this…lacks a lot of logic on a lot of levels.
I want the most effective weapon for the job, and it rhymes with fun.
>So… not everyone wants....a gun
It's perfectly within their rights to drastically limit their own defensive capabilities. It's also with our right to say they're fucking stupid.
>or even should have, a gun.
Like the home invasion crew that should be in prison, but instead are in your house and laughing at a sock-covered bat
The kind of idiotic nonsense anti gun corporations tell their underlings to do. "In case of an active shooter, find a weapon, use a stapler or a chair or... you know, you've seen Die Hard, become John McClain but without the icky firearm... so like become Kevin McCallister." Yeah okay, sure, and I'll get under the desk when the nuke goes off too.
It’s so weird to me how many people are willing to refuse to use a gun in home defense scenarios and instead opt for a much more personal and brutal way of deterring an attacker. I’d much rather use a method with a higher likelihood of lethality than a less-lethal method that requires me to get medieval on my attacker.
Carrying around a bat in your car with an attached sock means you are intentionally carrying around a weapon. Carrying around a bat by itself (ideally also with a ball and a glove nearby) means that you are a baseball player who, as a last resort, happened to legally use a bat for defensive purposes.
In theory, but not necessarily in application. If you get hit with a baseball bat it's gonna hurt but if you get hit with a mace not only will you get shredded if its spiked or flanged it will break and crush bones. The mace speaks with a lot more authority...and damage.
Which would still be legal in a lot of states in the US. Gun, bowie knife, sword, tomahawk,, club, doesn't really matter. In more restrictive states and other countries it might cause issues however..
Im not tough by any stretch, but she can swing that bat at me as hard as she wants, its not going to do much. She needs spray, if not an actual firearm. Its a good idea for women to have dog spray on a key chain. Spray, run, scream...going toe-to-toe and offering them a weapon (and sock) is not wise
I prefer to wrap it in Barbwire and refer to it as louceil. Then when the intruder enters my property I can throw it at them to catch and blast them in the fucking face with my gun
She is at greater risk with the bat than with the gun. Get a gun. Train with it. Take some classes. Enjoy the benefits of distance. The last thing I want is to be hand-to-hand with a bad guy.
