I’ve been taking a class on celestial navigation, he looks to be using a Tamaya. Two months ago I was totally confused, but it’s finally sinking in. Cool talent to have!

Sharp eye! It is a Tamaya indeed. My dad always wanted to have non electronics backups. He always carried a Walker log with a rope and a bronze like spinner even when our last boats also had electronic instruments.

That’s really cool. I don’t recognize the scope on the tamaya, that’s a lot different than what I’ve seen before. What kind of sailboat was it?

Alpa 11.50 a Sparkman&Stevens design. Her name was the "Red Witch" and the photo was taken somewhere along the route on our way to Puerto Rico. What great memories for you. I’ve only sailed twice on the Atlantic side, but I very much enjoyed it. I’m based on the west coast.

We sailed from Italy to Panama, went through the Canal and spent a year or so on the Pacific side (Balboa) living in Panama City. Thanking dad for the memories he gave me!

Yes, I think definitely a regional thing - I find most Brits call it Astro-Nav and most Americans seem to call it Celestial! Honestly, I have no idea why!

He taught me to do it during the day with the sun. At night with the moon or starts it was too hard for me. I very rarely felt seasick but those super tiny numbers on the ephemerides were tough :)

Sorry maybe I'm translating wrongly. I was quite amazed as we hit Puerto Rico right according to our charted course :) IIRC some 2900 miles and 15 days at the helm. Fond memories.
