Comparing the upgrade cycle of the 'vintage' days of consumer computing to modern day, have the capabilities neared their maxed out point?

Thought this might be a good little discussion topic.
Probably safe to say many of us here remember the computing days of the 80s-90s and into early 2000s. The rapid advancements, increasing specs and overall "new and fresh" made it a very exciting time. When I look at modern computing and see what is being offered, I don't get nearly as excited and pretty much concede to keeping my current equipment and "wait for next year." Maybe back then being younger it was just presented in a way that hit differently (I do miss Steve Jobs' performances). Anybody else have this same reaction? Can consumer computing really advance much more? Interested in your perspectives.
