Why is there so much coverage of the sunken yacht?

Past few days there has been non stop coverage. Seems a bit odd

Does anyone know what the safety was like on this yacht, there was one life craft as I’ve heard that the 15 or so people managed to deploy and get on, where there not any life jackets on board? Or any other buoyancy aids on the yacht? Usually in videos I’ve watched online there are weather tracking systems in such yachts, if the captain knew there was going to be such weather why not dock at the port? Something doesn’t seem right with this.

The life raft automatically deployed because of hydrostatic pressure after the knockdown, which threw all of the survivors into the water. The crew was trained on getting into the liferaft

Super yacht's are too big for a lot of ports. Just google map's '**Porticello**' and look at the port. It's tiny and packed full of smaller vessels. As for the life jackets and life crafts, it likely had loads but the eye witness says it capsized and sank in 2 minutes. How easy do you think it is to retrieve equipment when the boat is sideways and flooding full of water? Besides it seems the only ones that died were below decks and couldn't escape in time.

Mike Lynch was celebrating winning, only a short while ago, a seemingly hopeless case brought by the US government. He had been pretty much dragged to the US from the UK accused of over-valuing his company. He hadn't sought a sale; HP pursued him to buy it and they were the ones who valued it. The US government basically tried to shaft him and he expected to die in a US prison. Statistically his chance of proving his innocence was miniscule. He said if he hadn't been wealthy he wouldn't have been able to fight the US and fees that is wrong. The first few minutes of BBC Radio 4's PM programme on Monday re-played Mike talking about the case earlier this month - how people who are not wealthy would not have been able to fight for justice as he did. [Well worth a listen.](https://www.bbc.co.uk/sounds/play/m00223qw). Go to 10m15s for Mike talking about the case and how he won. Oh, and Mike's co-defendant who also successfully defended himself was killed just before Mike in a different accident at the weekend.

Meh. Rich guy got off the hook for dodgy shyte. He celebrated on his mega yacht and the captain got drunk. He sunk the boat. Killing his paymasters.

He absolutely was seeking a sale. Larry Ellison (CEO of Oracle) wrote a blog entry a few years ago - before the legal case - a schadenfreude laced article ripping into HP for buying Autonomy and describing how Lynch had been trying to sell the company to *Oracle* but him seeing through the bluster and sales talk all quite easily to realise he would be buying a pig in a poke.

Largest aluminium mast apparently ? In fact they now say that might have contributed to its capsize.
View on Reddit #33832801

SomeoneRandom007@reddit

Sailing boats are designed to pull upright with their masts, sails and a strong wind. I think what happened here was that a tornado knocked the boat on its side, but the portholes, hatches and bulkheads were open because of how hot it was, resulting in rapid flooding and sinking. Thus, there are no significant air pockets and they are all dead.
View on Reddit #33833567

spectrumero@reddit

Apparently it was dismasted (note that a water spout is a tornado out to sea, and can quite easily be a vortex with winds exceeding 120 mph). A mast of that size, over 70m tall, violoently collapsing could poke quite a lot of holes in things as it comes down.
View on Reddit #33869049

SomeoneRandom007@reddit

Suppose it was dismasted and fell straight down through the hull. It would still take a minimum of several minutes to sink. The draft was 9.73 metres, but most of that would have been the keel with the cabin draft likely to have only been 3m or less.
View on Reddit #33962588

spectrumero@reddit

4m with the keel raised. Here's the mast going on, the scale of it is something else. [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OqAS-eCM9B0](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OqAS-eCM9B0)
View on Reddit #33965901

SomeoneRandom007@reddit

Yes, the draught with the keel up is 4.05m (https://www.perininavi.it/yacht/2008-bayesian-formerly-salute/) It is likely that this bit of the boat will have a lots of material in it because it carries the bending moment from the keel and it also at some risk of being hit if the yacht grounds. So, the actual deepest bit of the actual cabin is still likely to be around 3m or so.
View on Reddit #33967146

Dazzling-Event-2450@reddit

It had a retractable keel, which is the huge weight underneath any yacht that like you say keeps the damn thing upright. If during the night the weather turned and the keel was retracted then it would capsize.
View on Reddit #33869968

SomeoneRandom007@reddit

Catamaran keels can be retracted for racing to reduce drag. All retractable keels might be raised for going over shallows. In this case, the boat was a monohull and at anchor. Why would the keel be up? Why would it be possible to raise the keel to a point where the boat wasn't positively stable?
View on Reddit #33962343

£30 million. No air conditioning.
View on Reddit #33843301

spectrumero@reddit

It's a sailing yacht. If you want to sail and just hear the sound of water going by the hull and the wind in the sails, and not the sound of a large powerful diesel generator thrashing away, you must do without air conditioning.

I heard that the mast snapped hence it tipped over
View on Reddit #33837248

SomeoneRandom007@reddit

If the mast snapped, it can no longer pull the boat over. The boat would then be even more stable. What I can believe is that the mast didn't snap but was blown horizontal, leading to flooding.

Most what they call yachts in the press belonging to billionaires are motorboats / very small cruise ships. This thing was an actual yacht - sailboat. It is a mega yacht.
View on Reddit #33869851

spectrumero@reddit

It's pretty damned big - LOA is 56m (183 feet) and beam 11.5m (37 feet) displacing 473 gross tonnes. As sailing vessels go, that's pretty 'mega yacht' sized. Sure there are bigger motor yachts but this has to be one of the largest modern sailing yachts.

Nonsense, were the Chilean miners also rich? What about the Thai boys football team? These kinds of events attract widespread attention because of the dramatic and freak nature of the event and the potential for a heroic rescue mission. Until yesterday there still seemed to be a chance that someone was still alive inside the wreck or adrift at sea, so people were invested in the rescue effort. The name nonsense about "people only care because they're rich" was being parroted around on here when the Titan Sub was lost, but it's got very little to do with it. People on here just love to hate rich people.
View on Reddit #33860272

> People on here just love to hate rich people. Considering all extreme wealth acquisition comes at the expense of large parts of society, the revulsion is hardly unsurprising nor is it confined to redditors.
View on Reddit #33863158

Papi__Stalin@reddit

I mean yes and no. Yes, they have a disproportionate amount of wealth, but rich people also contribute disproportionately to society. If you were just to look at income tax revenues in the UK, the top 1% of earners pay 30% of all income tax revenues. Rich people also generate their wealth, usually through owing and employing capital to produce goods. By doing so, they provide incomes to other people. To use Mike Lynch (the guy who's yacht sank) as an example, he founded a company called Invoke Capital that employs 1,500 people. The average salary at Invoke Capital is £75,000 (which is more than double the UK average). So Mike Lynch's wealth, also helped to create 1500 well paid jobs. Wealth acquisition is a doubled edged sword and does negatively impact parts of society, that is true. However, on the whole, wealth acquisition is a net positive go society, and to try and frame is a purely social bad is incorrect. Why do you think governments all around the world try and encourage wealth acquisition and try to attract wealthy individuals? The answer is because it drives up economic growth, it increases tax revenues, it increases employment, and it improves standards of living.
View on Reddit #33879957

Freebornaiden@reddit

Absolutely terrible comparisons. Firstly people getting trapped down mines or in cave, is a lot more interesting than a boat sinking. Then of course the coverage shifted to the rescue operation, the ingenuity of getting them out alive and of course they both offered happy endings.

i think the difference between how this is treated and how we treat the sinking of the small boats says a lot about us as a society. Kinda sad.
View on Reddit #33832533

Desperate-Oven-139@reddit

Yeah? The small boats come every day, they sink every other day. It’s *barely* news. It’s the status quo. Large boats rarely sink. Large boats very rarely sink and people die. I’m not sure anything quite like this has happened in my lifetime. Add to that the notoriety of the people on board and the fact the story is constantly evolving - it’s not a single incident where absolutely everything is known immediately. Whether you like it or not, it’s interesting. It doesn’t alter the way anybody feels towards the small boats. It doesn’t change policy. And if a small boat sinks tomorrow and people die, it will be reported. I think it’s easy to say *society is fucked*. The way the news is reported/treated is absolutely not the fucked part though. Suggesting that is just lazy.

There’s no mystery to the small boats. If you pack dozens of migrants into a boat in choppy water, of course it will sink. There’s no one of note on the small boats. There’s no reason for them to get national attention. The small boat issues happen far more frequently.
View on Reddit #33861427

scuderia91@reddit

I don’t think it does. The small boat siblings are a lot more frequent, the news isn’t going to report in detail on all of them. This is noteworthy as it’s not often a luxury yacht gets caught in a massive storm and sinks with somewhat noteworthy people on board. Look at the titanic submarine. It got loads of news coverage. And I don’t think that coverage was popular because people cared more about the billionaires as a lot of people seemed to think it was fine to not care as they were just a bunch of rich twats doing something stupid. It’s why we don’t get massive news reports on every fatal car accident but if it was a very freak accident or involved well known people it’ll always generate more interest to the general public.

A 180ft yacht is big but not remarkably big as superyachts go. The mast *was* unusual- it was the second tallest mast in the world, as most sailing vessels that size have several smaller masts rather than one huge one.

View on Reddit #33903829

redrabbit1984@reddit

I don't understand half the comments here. People saying "because he's rich" are being slightly ridiculous and just sound simple. It extends way beyond this. * He's a highly successful businessman who has been behind several UK based companies * He's been behind a lot of controversies and legal issues * Most notably a long running fraud case where the US authorities (I think) were trying to extradite him * He was only recently cleared of this after a trial * The co-defendant in that same case, which went on for about a decade was killed in the US around the same time after being hit by a car. * The people on the boat included * The chairman of Morgan Stanley (one of the biggest banks in the entire world) * A partner at a major law firm in London So when you combine this, it's quite clear why this is newsworthy. Not just a yacht which had sunk, with it's occupants unaccounted, but those on board being very prominent. These are not just "rich" people and to describe them as such is a bit insulting. Especially when you consider that one of those onboard was 18 years old. Those saying "rich people died", "He's rich, they're gutted for their mate.", "Haven't we been calling for the world to eat the rich?" are being dicks, and should remember that although they were wealthy, I don't think them or their families deserved to die like this.

*Good evening, 47.* Your next assignment takes you to the tranquil waters off the coast of Sicily, near the picturesque village of Porticello. The target is a high-profile individual who recently won a legal trial against a multi-billion dollar corporation, a victory that has not gone unnoticed. His actions have upset a major world superpower, drawing the kind of attention that can only lead to one conclusion: he must be eliminated. The plan is simple, yet requires your precise execution. The target is known for indulging in lavish yacht excursions, often isolated at sea, far from prying eyes. His next voyage will be no different. However, this time, the calm waters of the Mediterranean will turn treacherous. You will need to make it appear as though the yacht encounters a freak weather phenomenon—a sudden and unexpected storm, one that takes him by surprise and leaves no survivors. The authorities will chalk it up to a tragic accident, another casualty of nature’s fury. But we know better, 47. The key to this operation lies in timing. You will need to monitor the local weather patterns closely, perhaps even influencing them through discreet means. Ensure that the target is far enough from shore, with no possible escape or assistance. The yacht must be compromised in a way that suggests nature’s wrath—rigging the vessel to fail under extreme conditions. Perhaps a malfunction in the navigation system, or a sudden breach in the hull—your choice, as long as it’s fatal. Remember, 47, this is not just about eliminating the target. It’s about doing so in a manner that leaves no trace of your involvement. The world must believe that he was simply a victim of an unpredictable and violent storm. *Good luck, 47. Make it look like nature itself has turned against him.*

Nah. The probability of a yacht encountering bad weather in a weeks Med sailing is close to 100%. Now, storms in the Med can be sudden, but they aren’t magic. The worst one I’ve been in gave us about 5 minutes warning. More than enough time to get our shit together, and despite being 50 km offshore in s totally unsuitable RIB with not a professional sailor amongst us, we were fine. So the task for Agent 47 is not to summon a storm, it is to take advantage of bad weather and sink the ship. It would appear that no one was on watch, and no one was listening to the radio, everyone has windows and hatches wide open, and maybe the keel was retracted. It does seem odd that a modern yacht, which is specifically designed for (say) Atlantic storms, just foundered. Zero prep appears to have been done. All very tinfoil of course.

The yacht sank far too easily, especially when considering that smaller boats have survived waterspouts without much trouble. This one, however, went down like a lead balloon. Without getting too conspiratorial, there are some serious questions here. They knew bad weather was coming, which usually means at least two crew members should have been on watch. Yet, no distress signal was sent. For a yacht of that size to sink, it must have taken on a significant amount of water. This suggests that the hatches were left open, either due to a major oversight or ... something else entirely.

spectrumero@reddit

Sailing yachts (at least ones built for sailing a serious ocean) don't sink easily regardless of size, but they do sink and every year a number of them from small to large go down. We don't hear about most of them because they don't have the "British Bill Gates who just was acquitted from a fraud trial" on board. Quite a lot of modern yachts are also built for speed rather than safety and have things like bolted on keels that can be damaged in groundings only to fall off years later (and fall off in heavy weather, ripping a hole in the hull) so until someone's examined the sunken wreck it's all pretty much supposition at this stage.

I've watched enough Below Deck to know it takes about 30mins from the deckhand/bosun/officer on anchor watch to see enough anchor drag on the radar to justify rousing the captain, raise the anchors and move the boat with engines. All evidence points at the boat being ripped apart, including from a few locals who saw the distress flare go up at about 5am, who saw nothing but debris and a liferaft when they answered the call shortly after. The fact divers are noting bodies within the wreckage now at the seabed furthers the theory the boat dismantled rather quickly. So what exactlynis fishy? Other than the remains of the people who couldn't make it to the life raft?

> the woman who hit him stopped, called an ambulance and police and cooperated with them - real hit man stuff there. Obviously, it's a TV show, but Slow Horses did this in season two. A certain character had been plied with vodka, was murdered with an untraceable poison, and then had his death staged like an accident where a Russian hitman ran over his body and bicycle, before the owner of the vehicle, an ordinary British woman with ties to Russia, got back in the car and reported it to the police, claiming he came out of nowhere and she accidentally ran him over. Like I said, it's a TV show, but there's always a little bit of truth in fiction. I'm not saying this is what happened, but I wouldn't be shocked if it is what happened.

Stephen Chamberlain died on Saturday, the boat sank in the early hours of Monday morning. I’m really struggling to understand why people are popping their tin hats on about it. If there was weather summoning technology, in the hands of Black Ops type hitmen, then maybe. Or if the yacht was accidentally-on-purpose torpedo during a ‘routine military exercise’ then yes guys, we’d have something. Has to be said though, between this sinking and the implosion of the Titan submersible, mixing water with being mega rich is not a healthy combination, is it?

There are a few more angles to this that no one has mentioned. The CFO of Autonomy, Sushovan Hussain, WAS [found guilty of fraud in 2018 and sentenced to five years in prison](https://www.justice.gov/usao-ndca/pr/former-autonomy-cfo-sentenced-60-months-prison). Mike Lynch and Hussain were [found to have committed multiple acts of fraud under the Financial Services and Markets Act and the Misrepresentation Act 1967 in a civil suit brought against them by HP in a London court in 2022](https://www.judiciary.uk/wp-content/uploads/2022/07/Autonomy-v-Lynch-summary-280122.pdf). The most baffling angle is how Lynch was found not guilty in the US.
View on Reddit #33859997

The latter is satisfactorily explained by the different standards of proof required in civil vs criminal trials. Civil trials are on 'the balance of probabilities' and criminal is 'beyond reasonable doubt' (or 'sure'). So it is not unheard of to be civilly liable but not criminally liable.

Btw even with the crazy mast, this boat is still more stable than a non sailing style super yacht.
View on Reddit #33834224

vaskemaskine@reddit

Yes this kind of boat is designed for sailing less than ideal conditions. My friend’s father just sailed his yacht across the Atlantic and it’s a fair bit smaller than the one that sank, although they are similar in design: https://preview.redd.it/d639vl3mp5kd1.jpeg?width=922&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=c6e8bff6d28e9df3c8eaac2d77a7d448a77ab549 That said, I am in Italy at the moment and the storm that hit on Monday was pretty bad, even though I’m a fair bit further north than Sicily.

When you say a non-sailing style super yacht, what do you mean? Like…a car? That’s non-sailing.
View on Reddit #33834595

I don’t think a car is a yacht. I guess I mean a motor yacht.

View on Reddit #33837146

daveysprockett@reddit

Perhaps, but if, as has been suggested, there was a retractable keel that had been retracted, less stable than it might be while under sail.
View on Reddit #33837090

RainOfBurmecia@reddit

More stable than a non-sailing style super yacht that would also likely capsize if a waterspout hit it in the right place? You're talking about winds upwards of 120 mph that can cover a wide area nearly instantly, this isn't the same as strong waves or gusts hitting you sideways on. I don't really get this narrative that "boats like this don't sink" - no boat is immune to sinking in such insanely intense conditions.
View on Reddit #33835378

HorseBarrierRoad@reddit

They think the unique design may have contributed as far as I can gather. Something about an unusually tall mast made from aluminium and a different style keel to support that. Mast snapped, which may have contributed to it apparently rolling over.
View on Reddit #33833457

Lady_of_Lomond@reddit

The latest news is that the mast is intact.
View on Reddit #33833679

HorseBarrierRoad@reddit

That I did not know. I do wonder when the investigation concludes what the underlying causes will be. If it's in any way the boat design the lawyers will have a field day with this one. I'd not want to be the insurer it rests with.

View on Reddit #33858897

I'd expect a boat to be harder to capsize once the mast has snapped.

View on Reddit #33834262

So what do you think happened someone went on there killed everyone on board sank it and then paid off everyone involved in the search and made sure to do it on the same day as a storm
View on Reddit #33835387

Dry_Action1734@reddit

I assume he thinks it was a bomb. But that wouldn’t make any sense either given there were plenty of witnesses and plenty of passengers survived. Nobody is suggesting there was a bomb.

Because much like ancient peoples who thought their Pharaohs, kings, caesars were immortal gods, we view billionaires in a similar way as if their money made them immune to life's vicissitudes. So, when one dies in this kind of capricious way, our sense of good order in the universe is disturbed.

A yacht sinking in a freak weather event is newsworthy. When that yacht’s main passenger (who likely died) literally just got off fraud charges in the US and one of his lawyers was on the boat, it’s extra newsworthy. When his co-defendent dies too, having been hit by a car on the weekend, it’s conspiracy theory levels of newsworthy.

Overview here https://www.cio.com/article/304397/the-hp-autonomy-lawsuit-timeline-of-an-ma-disaster.html?amp=1 Add to that his co-defendent was HIT BY A CAR AND DIED on Saturday, it's just another chapter to this wild story.
