Help! I put the hob on and got distracted and accidentally left a glass dish on it, what do I do?

A disaster has just happened, I'm working from home and decided to have a short break and make some porridge. So I put the hob on and then got distracted with some Teams messages, without realising that I had left a glass pyrex dish on top of the hob. Then after a few minutes the dish shattered and glass went all over the kitchen floor, and has now burnt the vinyl. When I realised it had burnt the vinyl I panicked and tried moving the glass away with my hands and now my fingertips are all cut and covered with blood. I live with my mum currently and she's away for the week and before I realised it had burnt the vinyl floor I thought I'd just buy a new one and she wouldn't realise anything had happened. But now its going to be so embarrassing to tell her what has happened to the floor. My heart is racing so much, still panicking and typing this has been hard with bleeding fingers. Don't know how I'm going to carry on working

Phase 1 - sort yourself out. Phase 2 - vacuum everywhere, as well as clearing/cleaning the hob and work surface(s). It's no joke to say this kind of thing can travel. I'd vacuum connecting rooms too. Phase 3 - see how bad the vinyl really is. It'll probably need replacing but it's really not the end of the world. That's priority order. The only thing that takes precedent over 1 might be warning any others in the building, and particularly ensuring e.g. any children are safe and stay away until Phase 2 is complete.

Sort your injuries out and stay in the area until you're sure all the glass has cooled down. Put on a washing up glove if you still can and then start picking the glass up, collect it in a bowl as you do it. Call your mum tell her what happened and that you're fine, then start to research flooring places near you I guess? At least offer to pay for some of the cost if you can't cover all if you're working. Shit happens don't stress it. Open windows too. Melted vinyl might not be the greatest airborne substance to have around if it's smoked when burning

To add to the clean up of the glass. If you’ve got one of those mops with the disposable wipes on the bottom, they’re great for picking up the fine shards that can’t be seen but are guaranteed to stick in your feet if you walk around barefoot.

A slice of bread can be pretty good for picking up shards too - just be sure to bin it after...

True, guess you don't need to worry about scratching if the floor is already damaged lol

The small fragments won’t be scratched the surface too much but you will know about it if one gets in your foot.

Firstly take deep breaths and fix yourself, then hoover all the glass. It travels everywhere so be thorough and dorn kneel or stand on shards of glass. Accidents happen so hopefully your mum will understand.

Your mum will understand, these things happen. Just tell her what you told us and that you're very sorry, and your fingers hurt. There's home insurance for things like this, relax and put some plasters on your fingers.
