Why are sleepovers considered so important ?

Anyone else think they might be overrated and more risk than they are worth?
I was permitted to sleepover at the homes of friends and hosted them too, but if you had a daughter (or even a son for that matter), would you be so encouraging of them? If not, why not?
Were you allowed sleepovers growing up?
What were the best and worst things that happened to you all?
