This is what we have hobbies for. Now it is time for the we-don’t-need-takeout-because-we-have-burgers-at-home version out of disassembled transformers, some motors, LEDs, and an Arduino.
Haha yeah I know there also obscenely pricey Star Wars stuff but I am a classic Trek fan. To the point I have Vulcan calligraphy tattoos on my forearm.
But no LEGO sets.
There are cooler electronics you can get for that kind of money. Once you show your friend group this thing, it just becomes a $1,000 toy that just sits there.
I used to scoff at soundbar surround sound, then I got one for that ballpark. It blows my old Sony 5.1 surround sound out of the water and it’s very low key
my husband got home today from taking our son to the park & he went OFF on how jealous he was of some kid that had a remote control Optimus Prime toy like this.
he was originally a handgun because he was a licensed toy from a different line that transformed into life size items (watches, radios, etc). Being evil, the most obvious life size handheld item would be a gun.
It actually worked out well storywise IMO because it showed his character pretty well; he was ineffective without others also being evil or choosing to be evil and he had no other purpose other than to do harm. It was a pretty defining "guns are bad" statement too but I get why they stopped it. I just wish he had better alt modes than a generic tank/plan/ship. He's the main bad guy and his new alt form is one of the least memorable/consistent.

Did Soundwave come from that line too?
Yes, it was called (“micro change”)[https://tfwiki.net/wiki/Micro_Change]
There is a YouTube channel called the basics on transformers and one or two of the episodes is how the toyline was originally created, and it’s actually pretty interesting. It answered a lot of questions I had.
It’s actually made me appreciate transformers even more, and now I’m a little sad they are unifying all the storylines into one consistent lore. I kinda enjoyed the slightly different retellings, made it seem a little more mythological…and you could pick and choose what you liked.
On the one hand, something that I heard when the ‘07 movie was getting ready to release made sense. The Decepticon leader transforms into something so small he can be handled. And actually has to be handled in order to be useful against an enemy. A change in design made sense in that light, as well as them obviously not wanting to market handgun toys.
But on the other hand, Megatron is a handgun with a scope and a shoulder stock and that’s cool just because it is. Him not being a handgun will never sit right with me. I couldn’t even enjoy hearing Galvatron would be in the 4th movie because he obviously wasn’t going to be a huge canon.
I understand why he was a gun and why they wanted to move away from it (even though personally I think he should have still become a space rifle or something).
I wish they hadn't chosen a tank because plenty of other transformers are tanks or vehicles with mounted weapons. He needed to be something different..I wish they had gone with him transforming into a dragon, a monster, something really tiny that could control other things...idk more creative than just a tank.
True! Sadly they completely avoid the gun design these days.
Hasbro doesn't even reissue the G1 toy version anymore, only Takara in Japan still does it.
I remember that episode of the Toys that Made Us and the Green Rangers flute sword was like legitimately sharp for the Japanese version. Toy safety is not a number one priority over there.
I remember the Inter Tek line of toys in the eighties. They were so realistic that cops would literally shoot kids because they were "Fearing for their lives."
The megatron pistol was dope though.
I remember that. The company changed the paint schemes in order to clearly identify their products as water toys. Pretty sure they went under at some point or were bought out by Mitt Romney's people. He was known for doing that.
Still is :) I have the G1 and Master Piece version:

As a father in his 40s, I'm 100% blown away by this.
I just wish my kids could understand. In the near future, we will be explaining to kids we had to do this by hand. Like, figure it out on your own if you lost your booklet.
I was the autistic kid everyone in my family brought their transformers to because they lost thier booklettes.
There was just.... something about how my brain worked at the time I could just see how everything flipped around. I would hand their toy back properly transformed.
