Network Settings crashes instantly when trying to open, internet connection missing from taskbar.

Hi all, I be had my PC for about 4 years now. It has worked without issue. Yesterday, I restarted it, and when it booted up, the internet connection option was missing from my taskbar, and when I try to open it from the settings, it just instantly crashes. I have tried plugging my Ethernet cable directly into the PC, but it doesn’t seem to recognize it. Any ideas what may be happening?

Open cmd as administrator and type this:
net localgroup Administrators /add networkservice press enter then type: net localgroup Administrators /add localservice press enter then type: exit press enter and restart your computer

Man thank you so much , I thought I was done and dusted , thanks again

These are fake replies, this actually doesnt work, and you can tell because not ONE PERSON asked the guy to clarify "hey what exactly do I type? And when are u telling me to click or press enter"
Buddy didnt give any instructions about when the typing stops and when "ok now click as administrator or press enter" begins. He just said "type"...and then gave all the instructions without any breaks or directions like "ok now the typing stops, and u need to press this"...there's 0% chance ppl just followed it without even asking to clarification lmao

ImNotACachivache@reddit
Just in case someone else gets this error and arrives through google: if your Windows is not in english change "Administrators" for the equivalent word in your language (ej. "Administradores" for spanish).

Thank you! I could not open the "Network & internet" menu in the Windows 11 settings app. The Settings app would instantly crash as soon as I clicked "Network & internet." Running these commands fixed the issue!

Yes it did somehow open without crashing a day later and theres no problem since back then.
N_e_mix@reddit
Didn't fix it.
Glum-Role-3730@reddit
You find a fix?
N_e_mix@reddit
I was able to open the settings for just long enough after resetting a couple of times, clicked the update repair and then waited for it to restart. It didn't clear at 98% and got stuck so I shut the PC down, turned it back on and somehow that fixed it. Then they rolled out the fix and never had it come back since.
Glum-Role-3730@reddit
Where is the update and repair thing?

If anyone else looking this up, please not that the name of your localgroup might be different depending on your system's language. In my case (Russian) it was Администраторы.

This is a life saver, I have tried more than a dozen other "fixes" for this issue that did not work. This is the fix for Windows update not working, update could not get to the internet.

Run the Services, find the Windows Event Log, and change "startup type" to Automatic. Work for me in 2026 with Window10 pro. Good luck
Ichiban_PH@reddit
I have the same issue and I found the culprit. My dhcp client is disabled. Just search the services in windows taskbar search and run it as admin. Then find the dhcp client and set the startup as automatic. Reboot and it's done.
Glum-Role-3730@reddit
Could you elaborate further or make a video explanation please
InterestingRadio7174@reddit
I encountered the same issue today.(Windows 10) Tried all, diffrent cables, diffeent ports.
Issue was that the service for the DHCP tried starting but was unsuccessful due to the fact it tried a local account instead of system account.
Switched the option back to system-account and it worked again.

Didn't work for me, it just blinks off, trouble shooting doesn't work on anything on my POS operating system win10. Programs disappear, settings revert, fucking useless pain in my ass. Troubleshooting has been disabled by group policy but I just went through that and everything is set to default settings.
Checked every fucking one of them 1 at a time and made sure I looked at each explanation to be certain they were all set up to default. Spent hours yesterday, I can't figure out how to get Bluetooth to work either sometimes it will show up in the taskbar and I can add a device but that's rare, task bar is not locked the Bluetooth shows up in devices and in manager, wifi will occasionally show up in the task bar but when I try to connect to my phone or something, I can see it says it's paired, but my phone shows me it's not. It will constantly try to pair and a few seconds later it's not paired. I can connect my comp through my phones tether but that's the only way. When I try Bluetooth and direct connection it trys to connect and it will eventually say it's paired but I don t have any internet. Can't figure out how to pair a keyboard or a game pad through Bluetooth. Troubleshoot just shows errors no matter what I try to use it on.
I'm at the point where I honestly don't think it's worth my time to continue with this piece of shit OS i ran win7 64 for 12 years without ever any issues. This piece of crap hasn't worked since day 1. Tried 11 and got rid of it within a few minutes after it installed still have that blank partition on my hard drive labeled 11 as a reminder of just how awful windows is now. I don't need my computer to do much, but it would be nice if I could use it when I have no choice. I only connect it through my phone when I need to get it on line.
I've read so many others with these same issues, I can't even get it to download anything through windows update I get errors there as well. My fav is when I go to open a program and it's no longer on my hard drive. It's nice of windows to take care of me like that, it's just reminding me that I should just sell off the parts and be happy I won't be wasting any more time fucking with it .
If I had to use windows to make money I'd shoot myself and end the misery, I can't even imagine how frustrating it is for those who rely on their computers for a job? The wasted time and frustration would set me off every time, I'd be kicking that piece of shit until it stopped turning on and spending way too much money replacing the comps I smashed. I went through all this with a bunch of bad boards last year when my win 7 rig developed a bios issue and I've never had a solid working OS since. Only thing that runs are games and I never play them. Just another complete waste of my time, they offer little enjoyment and more frustration than I care to deal with.
Sad thing is I'm not alone on these problems and you have to basically be a computer wiz now to keep the OS running, is it just being an asshole on purpose or is it forgetful, or maybe it's testing me to see how much shit I'll put up with before I smash it? 7 was so good it was inevitable that they were going to sabotage it on purpose to create new revenue, it's a terrible world we live in now, corporate greed has destroyed most parts of are lives. I read that in 1969 (this holds true for me in 1979 as well) the average wage was around $16 per hour and minimum wage was just over $1 for me in 1979 minimum wage was just over $4 and I started an apprenticeship at $7 with a journeyman's wage set at $17 per hour. The average wage now is just over $22 with minimum at just over $7 but the prices of everything are 5 times as much.
I used to have tons of money to blow on everything, at the bar every night and bought whatever I wanted at any time, rent was $300 and gas was $1.50, eggs were 49 cents a dozen, a soda was 25 cents from a machine $1.50 a 12 pack and beer was $2-$3 a twelve pack and it tasted like beer. My wage increased to barely twice what I made in 1979 but everything else is 5 times the cost. Then theres the new way of thinking, don't make anything that will last longer than a few years only thing that's better now than before are Cars and TVs. Cars aren't a better deal but are better all around TVs are better all around and are a better deal. (I would add car stereos are better and cheaper but you're unlikely to be able to install one now)!
That's really too bad that I can only say 1 thing is better than 1979. I'm just lucky I have no kids, I don't know how you parents can do it in this day and age? So much to worry about, I can only wish you all the best in the future , I'm retiring in 4 months and I'm counting the days.
Neraxis@reddit
Have you disabled any services in windows lately? Windows 10 and 11 tie a lot of unoptimized services to basic functionality - disabling them can end up breaking that shit. Try reverting any changes you've recently done.
shmayvan@reddit (OP)
I have not disabled any services lately, nor have I made any changes to the hardware
