These Drivers Are "Driving" Me Insane!
Posted by Upbeat-Natural-7120@reddit | plano | View on Reddit | 124 comments
I just need to rant y'all. Nothing new, but these drivers around Plano might be the worst I've personally ever seen.
These past few weeks, my tolerance for people on the road has gotten much lower. Just on the way home, I encountered three drivers who just made me go insane.
One decided to stick their nose out halfway into the right lane (they were coming out of a neighborhood), causing me to swerve left. The second, who was turning left onto a median, decided to continue on into my lane and nearly hit me. The third decided to turn right at the last second (not in the turning lane either; I was) and nearly hit me.

I have lived all over the USA and other countries as well. This area is the most aggressive and angry area I have ever lived! Just returned from a trip to Cleveland and the difference in how people are with each other is astounding.
Eggaloney@reddit
Phoenix is much worse. Rudest and angriest drivers I've ever dealt with were in Phoenix and Arizona in general. I've been shouted at there and seen other drivers shout and cuss out their windows. People in Arizona in general are some of the meanest too. My biggest complaint is that people here drive like they live in a small town, extremely slow. I do wish people would drive faster here, then maybe it wouldn't create problems.
purpletaco28@reddit
What gets me is no one goes the speed limit. WHY are we going 30 when the speed limit is 45 ššš
Upbeat-Natural-7120@reddit (OP)
That's another thing. There's also plenty of "slow" drivers here as well.
jenica13@reddit
Plano has the worst drivers. Just dumb mistakes I see on the road. People almost swerving into me, sticking their car nose in the middle of the road of a busy road. Donāt know where ppl learned to drive here š«š«š«. Gotta be super aware.
GertBertisreal@reddit
I wasn't an angry driver til I moved here and I'm born and raised here
Greenbeanhead@reddit
š same
GertBertisreal@reddit
Houston was bad when I was growing up but nowhere near what it is today. Moved to Austin where I had a scooter and lived close to downtown, no problems. Moved here and it was a shock!! It's gotta be the water
Greenbeanhead@reddit
Thereās no law enforcement on our highways
And thereās really not much more on the surface streets
With this many people, the police have other problems besides traffic violations
Iāve been around for a minute at 54 years years old , in my lifetime Dallas has never cared about traffic violations. In the past 20 years, the immediate suburbs aināt got the time for that shit
You probably gotta go up to Frisco and north of there before the police have the luxury to enforce traffic violations
It feels like a weird video game , traffic rules are optional. And you gotta watch out because a lot of people arenāt even paying attention and then some people are hyper aggressive
Itās a special kind of stupid
Historical_Call_8349@reddit
We're seeing the results of the refund police movement. Yep. A special kind of stupid!
runfayfun@reddit
Blaming crappy drivers and poor enforcement in Plano on something that never happened in Plano is worrisome. Besides, it was this way well before any of the "police defunding" events.
And, of course, defunding never happened to the Plano PD, nor the Dallas PD. It was all hysteria by certain news sources and I'm not sure why you think it happened. (Source: Plano and Dallas budgets -- Plano PD budget $69m in 2014, $87.5m in 2019 and $106m in 2024. Dallas PD budget $426m in 2014, $517m in 2019, and $719m in 2024. George Floyd was killed in 2020, and all this talk of defunding happened in 2020 onward.)
Historical_Call_8349@reddit
I want talking about an event or the actual funds. I referred to the "movement". Seems departments are reacting to the movement to avoid those things. Deciding started right after George Floyd and gained momentum in 2020. The fact that is seems relatively new to you doesn't negate the fact that police departments have been under fire for quite a while. If we want more policing we need to be vocal.
runfayfun@reddit
What evidence do you have that the Plano PD is reacting to the "movement" and that this is producing reduced enforcement of traffic laws?
I didn't say this was new. I said that crap driving and lack of enforcement has been going on since way before George Floyd.
Plano citizens have been vocal about more policing and have voted in elected officials who have consistently increased the size and budget of the police force. Yet you say there has been worse enforcement of laws. If increasing funding and positions isn't the solution, what do you propose?
Historical_Call_8349@reddit
I think increased funding & positions IS the solution. You're looking for a flight and I've got better things to do.
runfayfun@reddit
I'm not saying to defund them, nor trying to pick a fight. I'm genuinely curious because so many just blame it on the "movement" and slap the hood and say, "Well, that's the problem, no need to look further!". But it's clearly not because that movement has absolutely quieted down substantially and there's still no improvement in enforcement of moving violations and other issues that result in citations (I.e. fines, money, which if funding is an issue, there you go!). And you say the solution is that they need more money and personnel, but that already has been done and didn't work.
The problem seems to be leadership. Someone in the PD is determining that these laws do not need to be enforced. Referrals to the DA are up (in lockstep with both population growth and police funding) over the same timespan that citations are down substantially. This tells me that they are still policing higher level crimes but have chosen to stop issuing as many citations for lower level crimes.
This is why in an earlier reply to you I said you need to be vocal and tell your elected officials they need to start enforcing these laws.

No one in our neighborhood stops at a stop sign and we have an elementary school
TXVette121@reddit
Same. Mathews Elementary. Drivers just breeze on through.
Texas_Mike_CowboyFan@reddit
Same, Cross Bend and Round Rock. They zip through that intersection like they aren't even there. While kids are walking to school.
ASleepyLawStudent@reddit
As someone from Houston, I hate driving in Dallas because the drivers here are just dumb. Everyone speeds in Houston. Here, a regular, non traffic speed is 55 in a 70 (in the left lane because the idiots here donāt know the left lane is the fast/ passing lane)
Loud_Internet572@reddit
Exactly - I've been having to travel quite a bit to the Houston/Austin/San Antonio over the last few months and it has been a refreshing change of pace to not only actually get up to the posted speed limit, but to actually go over it as well. I don't understand why people in and around Dallas are doing 50mph when the speed limit is 70-75mph.
ASleepyLawStudent@reddit
Exactly! People are so passive here, my theory is because there is more money here. People arenāt as stressed out as in other cities and donāt really have any sense of immediacy.
Or rather, thereās more old money here, so the immediacy isnāt as great as other cities in Texas. Itās always the range rovers going 40 in the left lane that send me over the edge ššš WHY am I facing to go the right lane to pass your slow, entitled butt!
GertBertisreal@reddit
OMG thank you! I grew up in Clear Lake and we had to drive "in to town" to get anything . But best part was living so close to the water
PcChip@reddit
the thing that drives me crazy are people driving UNDER the speed limit on clear sunny days, blocking traffic behind them. It seems to be the worst on Legacy and Spring Creek, between Alma and Coit or so
D-Atari@reddit
This is literally the worst driving state in the union.
TheDutchTexan@reddit
As a euro import I can and will go on record: A lot of Americans can't drive for shit and it's because you get your license never leaving a 30mph neighborhood in some cases. I laughed my ass off during my drivers test back in 2007. Took less than 10 minutes total and put probably less than two miles on the car.
Proper examination should have you on a 30mph residential, main 40-45mph roads and the highway including parallel parking, backing up and a 3 point turn. A full hour examination. The majority will not pass first time. And some people will never pass because they shouldn't be behind the wheel. All those idiots now pass first time due to the simplicity of the examinations. It's a blatant lack of driver ed.

Also the statement is true. If everyone is an asshole you are the asshole. Maybe just having a sensitive day?

I had a friend die this week on 75, a wreck happened in front of her and she stopped in time to avoid it but because of a tailgating careless driver behind her, she was smashed from behind and pushed into the wreck in front of her, killing her...
Greyboy1972@reddit
Oh,my goodness, I am so sorry to hear that . My condolences š I am from Texarkana, and I am shocked by the tailgating. I myself would rather be afew car lengths away, but that could be all them years of being a trauma nurse.
Upbeat-Natural-7120@reddit (OP)
That's awful...I'm so sorry about that.
Longjumping-Month412@reddit
Itās definitely a lot worse and scary.
I have quite a story.. My husband was hit at spring creek/coit by someone who ran a red light and then try to tell the cop his light was green. Thankfully we had a dash cam that proved otherwise. 23 y/o was not on the āinsuranceā nor the owner of the car so his friend came and provided insurance.. we called his insurance to only find out that it was inactive š”š¤¬
Rode my motorcycle out the other day and I had an idiot who cut me off then decided last minute to leave the lane then get right back in my lane. Thankfully I had control of my bike but JFC people!!!! Learn to drive!!!

Icy-Essay-8280@reddit
I would laugh but it's so true. You wonder what these people use for brains.
DueSavings45@reddit
It's bad. Too many people and too many slow or distracted drivers. I'm also sick of seeing all "Student Driver, Please Be Patient" stickers. Most of them are way too old to be students, they're just bad drivers.
Cloudy_Automation@reddit
I wonder if some of the people who didn't grow up in the US put their speedometers into metric. They may be more familiar with metric, but the speed limit signs are in mph. It's the only thing which would explain some of the speeds I've seen. I don't know if the adult driving places teach that, but they should. I understand there's a lot of things to learn on moving to the US, and no good way of learning everything.
sfa1500@reddit
There are a lot of adult driving schools that have popped up in the past ten years. They generally cater to Asian and Indian drivers that have moved to this area. But if you've been around here long enough you've probably seen plenty of posts from people coming from major urban areas who readily admit "I've never owned a car is it necessary?"
ASleepyLawStudent@reddit
Honestly, as a south Asian driver whoās been in the states since the age of 2, Iāve seen people talking about that sticker and kind of using it to say some ācasualā racism.
People who are narrow minded also just assume everyone and their mom gets their license at 16 like most of us raised here in Texas do!
sfa1500@reddit
Let me be clear, there is no racism meant in my explanation. Simply an observation of the names of the companies. But also an understanding that for many places it's either cultural why they didn't drive or that it wasn't necessary due to dense urban infrastructure.
ASleepyLawStudent@reddit
Oh no! I think I may have been unclear!
I thought I was agreeing with you! You seemed to be understanding of different back grounds and experiences! I wish more people were like that!
Sorry, I didnāt mean to make it seem like I was disagreeing š

kuronekotango@reddit
God the people turning out from a plaza/strip mall sticking their nose into the right lane, as well as those waiting in the left turn median but have their nose halfway into the left lane of the other side, are so annoying... just go already, or wait like a normal person lol. Hate to say it but they're always the usual suspects too....
dallasdude@reddit
We need to invest heavily in traffic calming infrastructure on our non-critical surface streets.
There is absolutely not one single reason that all of the roads flanking our neighborhoods needs to be six lanes at a 40mph limit with most traffic going 45-50mph.
Why arenāt we converting these into 4 lane roads with 35 mph limits?Ā
These big fast wide open straight interior roads are dangerous for everyoneā the cars on the road, any pedestrians or workers along and the surrounding neighborhoods.Ā

Upbeat-Natural-7120@reddit (OP)
That's not me.
ATK-QM-750@reddit
Well, I guess that just goes to show how bad the drivers really are in Plano if this is happening regularly haha. If you don't already have one, get a dash cam. They are definitely worth it.

No, but they clearly looked inept and unbothered by their Terrible driving.

You must have learned to drive someplace else other than Texas. Driving in Texas is a competitive sport. After a while, you'll just say nice move.
Upbeat-Natural-7120@reddit (OP)
I've lived here my whole life. It's my (general) ability to recognize these things that has helped me not get into an accident.
ravan363@reddit
In addition to following the rules, I try to anticipate what stupid drivers can/would do. I had many such instances you described where I had to swerve into another lane simply because the other driver didn't look at the oncoming traffic and merged into the right lane, so I usually avoid driving in the right most lane and similarly some people stop suddenly without their blinkers on to turn right / left. Don't want to stir any group but my observation is Toyota/Lexus drivers drive much slower than the speed limit, I tend to stay away from those cars, move further away from them.
Upbeat-Natural-7120@reddit (OP)
The slow drivers have also been a problem, although much less so.

I particularly bad trip for you. But this appears to be the slow degradation of ādriver moralsā everywhere. Not sure if itās the digital life, or something more - but many are losing the required patience, accountablity, and even, dare I say it - tolerance - to maintain safety on the road.
Yāall be careful out there. And when driving seems most stressful, take the time to curiously ponder in the moment.
SportingDirector@reddit
And I'm literally about to start learning to drive...am I in trouble?
ShotgunBetty01@reddit
My kid is a good and cautious driver and she got t-boned by an idiot the first year she had her car.

Sir_Space_Naught@reddit
Simply put, do not copy what you see on the DFW roads. People are too busy staring at their phones, driving like idiots, and have zero care for anyone or anything. Follow the rulebook and course instructorās advice
SportingDirector@reddit
I'm so introverted I wouldn't want to crash into anyone because then I'd have to talk to people
Sir_Space_Naught@reddit
Same here, honestly if you just follow the road rules, accidents wont really happen unless someone else around you fails to follow them. IE, speeding, distracted driving, failing to yield, failure to follow road signsā¦..
Ive been on the dallas roads since 2016 and the number of idiots I see that fail to recognize the most common road sign on highways (yield to ramp) baffles me.
EzzoBlizzy@reddit
Iām ngl rule number 1 avoid GMCs at all costs. Those fuckers give me nightmares I be trying to follow the speed limit and thereās always one of them behind me either honking, having them fucking lights on flashing at my mirrors and I canāt see none or 3 trying to swerve by me like this is some fast and furious movie. No joke this happens so often I just speed up now when I see one and somehow even going 50 on a 35Mph they are on my bumperšš and go 60 somehow they still follow me. Itās impossible with them gmc drivers man, I just now genuinely believe GMC stands for Great MotherFuckin Cunt. I seen the other day on idek if it was the 121 or 399 or coming out of them but this gmc driver on a fucking sierra made this ford explorer driver go off the roadš. Theyāre vicious people who believe the world rotates around them.

I drive an old bathtub on wheels (2001 wrangler) and I love when I am already going 5-10 over the speed limit in the right lane on a highway, theres some deadbeat riding my bumper. Sorry, ive only got 3 gears and I top out at 90ā¦ If im going to slow, thats what the lanes to the left are for, pass me and be on your way.
Welcome to Texas, where all drivers think the highway designation is the speed limit.
Yes, that includes 820ā¦. People will go flat out on that road not caring at all for the sheriff parked 3 miles up the road.
Texas_Mike_CowboyFan@reddit
It's the other people you have to worry about.
Loony_Loveless@reddit
In the decade Iāve lived in DFW, my biggest pet peeve has always been why people feel the need to stop at red lights wherever they choose to stop. 2 car lengths behind the white line, 3 car lengths behind the car in front? No worries, Iāll just gradually pull up the ENTIRE red light so everyone else has to inch forward as wellā¦ Or maybe I wonāt so the entire left lane that had a green arrow wont get to go because theyāre blocked behind me. š¤¬
ASleepyLawStudent@reddit
