If someone charges their car at someone else’s home, should they offer some money?

Let’s say someone visited you for a long weekend, and drove quite far, so their car battery was pretty empty. They asked to plug their car in and charge it overnight. It’s a pretty interesting question (imo), as it’s quite a new problem, so I don’t think the etiquette has been established. Personally, I think the homeowner should allow the person the charge (assuming they’ve got a driveway and an easy way to run the cable), as it’s way cheaper to charge at home. But a car charging could cost around £10, which is not nothing, so the car owner should offer some money for it. Has anyone been in this position before? How did you deal with it?

I really don’t understand why so many people consider this to be a quandary. If said friend drove a petrol/diesel car it is highly unlikely that they would dream of asking someone they were visiting to fill up their tank for them! If they did, you would likely consider it highly inappropriate of them. This is exactly that, and people need to realise that they are STILL responsible for fuelling their own vehicles, regardless of what it runs on!

I don't think "should" is the right way to look at this. Would it be the right thing to do to offer some money towards the charging cost? Absolutely it would. Would I accept or expect my guest to pay for it? Not if we are talking £10 no, just as I would not expect them to pay for the food they ate while staying with me. If it were a longer stay then things would likely be different but for the sake of £10 I could not care less.

I haven't seen "I could not care less" used correctly in so long it almost sounded off to have the "not" in there. Also agreed, if someone pays to come see me I think it's fair to at least cover their journey home in cases like this. I'm getting an electric soon and if I feel like I'm taking the piss by asking I'll just opt to buy some takeaway or something to feel less guilt about it, but I imagine most people will be using their car whilst visiting and use charging bays whilst out as to not be inconsiderate.

As an immigrant who does know this is the right spelling, I still don't understand when is the case to add "/s" to a comment and when is not; I've been told several times "/s" must be used only in the US as in the UK people normally appreciate sarcasm. I sympathiise, but as you say, this is Reddit ¯\\\_(ツ)_/¯ The "should of" is just wrong, and very American. The /s lets others know that sarcasm is intended, as written word alone contains no inflection or emotion....how the sarcasm is received is entirely Hit/Miss/YMMV.

No, but it's not about the absolute value. It's about the fact that it's a resource they are using at your home whilst in a guest in your home. If I had a hot tub at home. I wouldn't expect them to pay me for the electricity to heat it up while they're there. But if we went to a spa during their stay I wouldn't pay for their entry. I wouldn't bill them for food at home but I wouldn't pick up their restaurant bill (probably a better example than the first one!) Anything (within reason) they consume in my home, including a modest amount of electricity, is part of the deal of hosting. Any thing they consume outside my home is a different situation entirely.

I had this exact situation recently when visiting a family member. Strangely, for a posh part of the country full of expensive houses, cars, etc., there were next to no public charging points nearby. Looking on a map it is an almost empty zone! I offered to pay towards the cost of charging as it would have been about £10-20 over the visit. This was declined, but I thought it polite to offer as they were allowing me to charge.

I think the etiquette has been established. You charge at a station before arriving or you head out after arrival to find a charging point. You don’t use the host’s electric point or electricity, just like you don’t ask for a can of petrol. I’ve been driving an electric car for years and stayed at many homes as a guest, not once have I asked to use their electricity and have always charged at a charging point nearby.

In true Britishness as a host I wouldn’t expect anything. As the guest, if it was a full charge I may offer the host some £ to cover the charge, but you can only refuse twice then it goes back in my wallet. Also the host has the right to moan ‘didn’t even offer me anything’ if you didn’t offer, even though he didn’t ask in the first place.

If you're granny charging you'll probably get maximum six hours as most people won't leave their windows open overnight or while out so they get robbed. That'd 18kw at 30p or 6£ If they have an EV charger you could smash it overnight but then it's (200ish miles) about 60kw at 9p or 5.40£ So not really the only way it would be more than a tenner is if you used either more than 112 kwh On a charge point overnight or granny charged 11 hours continuously at the High rate

I would assume that if I'm visiting someone else without an EV, they wouldn't have cheap overnight electricity (I don't, but I WfH). So at 28p/kWh it's more like 100x0.30=£30. But yes, they're more likely to only have a three-pin so £6 seems more likely in that scenario.

Charging an electric car, based on some of the figures mentioned here (£10-25) could be anywhere between 25-62% of my monthly electricity bill. My electricity was £40 for July. So if someone increased my monthly bill by 50% charging their car, I'd probably expect a contribution in the same way I'd expect a contribution if they forgot to turn the oven off and left it running all night, running up a massive bill.

I’m with you here and really surprised at all these answers. IMO there’s an expectation I would have extra costs when I’m hosting someone anyway, and this falls into the same category. If they were staying longer term, I would hope they wouldn’t charge every night, but if they do then I still wouldn’t expect payment honestly. If anything, I only really expect hospitality from them in turn, as anyone staying a week or so with me will only ever be someone that I would do the same with at their home.

What if you live in a block of flats or don’t have off road parking? If I have an EV myself, with a charging station. Then it’s perfectly acceptable for the guest to ask. Because as pointed out, you’re probably on an EV plan. No different than your guest asking to borrow a phone charger. However, as the guest I would just find the nearest charge point and pay for it. Same as I would with an ICE vehicle. I would only ask to charge if for some reason that wasn’t possible and only charge enough to get to a charging point. In the same way that should a friend insist on paying for the petrol; putting in what you used is fair. Filling up the tank with premium would be taking the piss.

We routinely charge at my in laws' house and don't pay (or offer to) (I also know sometimes on their tariff they have made money on us charging!) and I wouldn't want/expect them to pay to charge at our house. It's not like you'd offer to pay for their petrol or wear and tear.. but it would be very odd to ask for electricity costs, unless you're struggling for money. My electricity bill for July was £40. An increase of £25 is the equivalent of almost 3 weeks usage. If I got the train to visit a pal, I wouldn't expect them to reimburse a £25 fare.

When we invite a guest, we expect to feed them, keep them warm and clean and wipe their bum (at least give them the means to do so!) I think it's a similar unwritten rule that they have the means to get themselves home, clothe themselves, have their own toothbrush etc (not sure what the etc is). Not having such I feel is a breach of etiquette. I certainly wouldn't grudge a friend a tenner if they were in need, if they said "I can get to yours, but I won't have the means to get home" then I'd cover it gladly.

I think charging up your car is definitely different to, for instance, charging up your phone at someone's house. £15ish is very different to a few pence for charging a phone. I'd certainly offer a guest the opportunity to plug in their EV overnight. I wouldn't ask for money, but I'd be somewhat put out if they didn't offer. If they didn't offer to pay, it would be akin to them asking me for £15 so that they could go and put some petrol in their ICE car or siphoning some fuel from my petrol tank for free.

That said, if it only happened occasionally and was only tenner, I'd pay myself it as hospitality - just like the meals. I have an electric bike and sometimes when visiting friends it will need charging before I go back home. It costs around 80p to charge, and I'm more than ok with paying my dues. I'll typically give payment in the form of buying them a coffee once in a while as the cost of charging it is so low. Personally I think it's more than reasonable to ask them to pay for the electricity they are using to charge their vehicle, you wouldn't be expected to pay for their petrol.

He say it’s nothing but it depends if you’re talking about somebody with a cut rate package or not. The likelihood is that somebody with a wall box will have a cut rate package. An MG4 with an extended battery is 77 kWh - assuming they get to your house with 10% battery free then very roughly they’re going to be needing 69 kWh. Ignoring any type of losses from charging et cetera that is 69 units. i’m on Octopus and the last time I looked cut rate was 9 p/ unit meaning £6.21 to fill the battery. However, if I wasn’t on the cheap rate, it would be 29p per unit which is £20.01 although on a granny lead that would probably take about 30 odd hours to charge it is still possible on a long weekend. Personally, I wouldn’t take money for either unless my guest insisted incredibly hard but I would be a bit put out if they didn’t offer.

So at the moment it’s generally more affluent people with EVs (apart from motability) as things move on it’s likely to be more and more people. For me it’s £6.21 as I’ve got a split tariff so not exactly the end of the world FOR ME. This happened twice over the last year when friends have visited have visited from England. Whether it’s “normal” or not, none of my Scottish friends and family, affluent or not have EVs whereas a few in England and wales do. The first time I refused any money even though they offered the second they paid the £7 as part of a load of other expenses (holiday, 2 couples, paid 50/50).

I don’t think it’s up to the home owner to just simply not acknowledge it and accept it. The car owner should be asking if it is ok, and also offering to pay for it. Some charges may cost £10, others may cost over that, it depends on the tariff someone is on, and the amount that needs to be charged. To put it more bluntly, would you expect a person you are visiting to pay for your fuel for the return journey if you had a petrol or diesel engine?

If you are a guest at the person's home, I think it would be odd if they expected you to pay, or if you offered. If they served you dinner or you slept over, you wouldn't pay, would you? Of course not, even though those things are worth more than a few dozen kilowatt‐hours to charge your car. Friends do each other reciprocal favours; they don't sell things to each other. No, the polite thing to do is to bring your hosts a gift. A nice bottle of wine or a flower arrangement are the classics, but more creative options would also serve.

If my mate who works at Tesco pays less for groceries with the employee clubcard, doesn't really matter whether the beef joint for Sunday roast was £25 when I host or £10 if he does, the end result is a roast. They're guests and asking for a relatively minor favour, if the £20 is gonna put you out, obviously don't go into financial problems over it, but if they're in my house, staying overnight, and have travelled a significant distance, I assume they're good enough friends that they'd return a similar favour without thinking about it.

I'm just about to get my first EV and was thinking the same thing. From the research I've done, if you're not on a special EV tariff it will cost significantly more than £10 to fully charge a car, as much as £20. Much more again if they're on a PAYG meter Now, it depends on who you are visiting and if they can afford £20. To many this wouldn't be an issue but I wouldn't expect this from anyone and would need giving them the money in full without asking, I never expect people to pay for my fuel if I visit them, this is no different. A question I do have though, do many hotels offer free charging? I've not looked into this but we do go away and stay in nice country hotels and guesthouses a few times a year where they'll be no local place to charge. It's an emerging 'thing' and I'm still trying to wrap my head around all this!

Yes, I think a full charge will be anything from a couple of quid to £15 depending on battery and tariff. Not everyone is on a cheap overnight rate. It’s pretty easy to work out exactly what you have used.

I’m an EV owner and I wouldn’t dare ask someone to charge my car at their house without offering payment. Whether they accept the payment is a different question but then I’d cover something when we’re out etc. If someone came to my house, asked to plug in their car and didn’t offer to pitch in for something at the weekend I’d be quite annoyed. My friends and I often do this as a few of us have electric cars. It’s not difficult to swing £10 on online banking or get a round of coffees in. You just have to agree on what works for you.

Depends if it is trickle charge or super charger with preferable rate. Ours is 6.7p/kWh which works out to be £4 for a 60 kW car. Visitors will probably not need a 0-100% charge so realistically it is going to be less than £3 for a charge. I’m not going to charge my friends £3. On the other hand, a bigger battery on trickle charge may well cost £20.

I think it would be a bit rude to turn up at someone's house without the means to get myself home, whether that was petrol, bus fare , electricity or broken legs. I wouldn't ask to charge my car and would expect to account for the time to charge it if it was low. (I know very little about e-cars) If someone asked me, I'd feel a bit put out. I have no idea how much it costs to charge, and the not knowing would give me anxiety. I'd be reluctant to invite someone again purely on the basis of the social anxiety.

If they're my guest, I'd make the offer. If they're a random person visiting a neighbour, they're welcome to ask and if it isn't an inconvenience to me then I'd let them. If they're my guest I wouldn't expect them to pay, just like I won't give them a bill for hot water or for breakfast. However, if I was the guest in this equation I'd absolutely offer! If they're my neighbours guest, I'd upfront ask them for a small amount of money to cover it.

At my home I absolutely wouldn’t charge a friend - I already have an EV tariff and so it would only cost about £3-6 which is well within a favour for someone staying over But if someone doesn’t have an EV time-of-use tariff then it could potentially cost up to £25 (with a large 100kWh battery), which is a much more substantial amount of money. I have this with my sister in law who along with her husband take home probably 3 times our salary but squaff it up a wall so always plead poverty. They have a useless Peugeot people carrier because they can't stop having kids so need a 7 seater, and that probably does 120 miles to a full charge. Their home charger has been broken for months so all we hear is how expensive it is to charge at Tesco. Naturally every time they visit they ask if they can use our charger (other half has a hybrid, I'm still in my 3.0 petrol having tried a fully electric for a month and didn't enjoy driving a buggy computer on wheels. Of course they never carry cash. It's causing a fair bit of conflict now as they charge at day rates when they visit. When we visit if I asked for £20 for my petrol I doubt they would be cooperative. So why should we give them free electric - at 24p a unit when we charge our hybrid at 8p over night? My view is they need to go use a fast charger on the way home. I've twice succeeded in forcing that issue but they have since twice topped up bit when visiting. So yes charge them. Better still register your charger with Zappi and tell them to just Zappi it

There are friends who I know who are not well off and quite often won't have the heating on, but will put it on when we are round, often I think should I give them some money but I don't want to offend, instead I'll buy them a takeaway and a bottle of wine, a bit of a gesture of contribution for the evening. A bit of give and take, don't need to tally up a costing at the end and split the weekends costs, but it's nice to contribute, especially if it's more often you go to theirs than they come to yours. Flip side if I know this person doesn't have as much disposable income then I'd much prefer to cover all costs, I'd rather see friends than them worry about how they'll afford to get there and back, eat, drink etc. I suppose in the end it depends on the scenario and people involved

If I were the one accepting the charge, I'd give the homeowner a nice bottle of wine in return, but I generally wouldn't normally expect them to ask for money or offer to pay them. Yes, it depends on the guest and the timing of the charge as well. I did have a friend of my parents visit and charge their car - they give me a nice bottle of fizz as a thank you for both. For me an overnight charge is 7p a kWh or 30p kWh in the day so that makes quite a difference compared 50p-70p on public charger. My parents don't charge me when I visit but my Dad does jokingly complain. If I was visiting a home and charged then I'd generally offer something - I gave a nice bottle of fizz & some beers last time I visited family friends and charged.

People don't generally accept money but I'll always offer. I have a car charger installed and an EV specific tariff that makes car charging cost 7p per kWh. I would be actively encouraging them to use my charger instead of public chargers, and I would outright refuse any money they tried to offer. Charging my entire car's battery (64kWh) costs under a fiver at that price and that's a reasonably large battery as EV batteries go right now. If someone is coming to visit me, then me "paying" a fiver for them to spend the time travelling seems like an extremely small price to pay. Especially when I spend time with friends in scenarios like that, we tend to pay for each other for anything we do together. So I get drinks, they get food, this time, other way around next time. It all averages out probably. If I were the one driving to someone else's house, I would offer to pay. But honestly, unless they have a proper charger installed, I wouldn't charge off of a socket in case the socket turned out to not be up to the task of the power draw of a granny charger.

it depends on a lot of things. If you're living paycheque to paycheque and feeding 50p's in to the meter (is that a thing any more?) I think it'd be fair to expect it or even condition it, or to ask them to schedule it during your 'cheap' window if you have one.. If you're the CxO of Megacorp plc and you've just been showing off your spare top-end EV then no and it'd be petty to even think of it. If people are staying a week and came some distance, and will be road-tripping a lot over that week - I'd expect them to offer. If it's close family or friends and it won't cause you hardship, I'd expect to not ask and to refuse any cash offers - at most might allow them to pick up an extra round if we go out if they insist, or something similar as a 'thank you' gesture rather than as 'payment' Assuming there's some level of reciprocal hospitality it'll all probably roughly balance out over a lifetime, and if it doesn't then c'est la vie.

When she first started coming she always used to bring a little gift as good gesture. But now she just takes, no reciprocation. I am afraid that’s how society has become, just taking and no reciprocation. Rant over.
