Funny, you should say that. The only guy that I knew in my entire life who owned Mooney said above 2000 feet he got scared. Spent a lifetime running down problems on Texas oil pipelines.
Mooneys are incredibly efficient the higher they get.
The turbo M20’s have excellent cruise performance in the flight levels.
Horrible training platform. Great cross country machines.
They aren't. They're known for being traveling airplanes - fuel efficient (160 KTAS @ 12 gph) and a solid IFR platform. They aren't noted for maneuverability, downward visibility, or short/soft field performance. So, I don't know what this dude is talking about. But there are a lot of strange people in aviation.
I Knew this pilot as a friend in the early 2000’s may he RIP. His home and airstrip are next to the highway and I shit you not a 1200’ tower on the north end. Guy wires and all. We took off to the north one day with a first timer in the right seat. He was sh**’n his pants for sure. Pilot looked at me like he was enjoying it!
His son was flying 747’s for UPS back then. Had a Russian Yak he used to fun fly up near me. I would catch him from my back yard at about 4 or 5000, doing aileron rolls over and over in a relaxed spiral.
Did not fall far from the tree 🌳. Good air to you all.
I had a guy come in for a landing but botched it and went too long so requested right closed, took it about 1500 feet down the runway at maybe 30’ agl and pulled closed like a fuckin fighter, it about gave me a heart attack. The mooney guys are different for sure.
Because you are dispatched with just enough fuel to do so. A Mooney on a weekend hamburger run can be either a similar fuel load (Missed, try again, divert+45 minutes) or shoot the approach all day because they have literally 5 hours of fuel at economy setting.
I was ball parking low for a full tank start hamburger run across a state, but yes the point still is that GA planes generally have better endurance to do approach after approach in comparison to jets in a 135/121 environment. Hell even 91 that's the case.
There's no instrument approach, so you're basically going to have to wait until the fog/clouds clear or divert. KLLR isn't too far away and tends to have better weather.
You can camp at the airport, or stay in one of the hotels. But if you are going look for high pressure out to the coast pushing the fog away. There is no fuel so plan for that.
I'm happening to look at Shelter Cove \[0Q5\] at the moment. This guy flew up there from SoCal two hours ago and has been trying to get in ever since he got there. He diverted to Garberville for an hour, and is currently trying to scud run/ water land/ whatever. Descending as low as 25ft above the water.
What do you think is going on?
Planes just don't move that much air. You need to be able to see the runway get your alignment right and not hit the surface, and if you can see the runway well enough to fly over it at 50'...well I hope you can figure out what to do next.
I think you nailed it. He's under the layer, but the runway is \*in\* the layer.
I don't know his girlfriend, but her \*\*\* must be radioactive for him to try that shit to get there.
Scary stuff.
Ryan Gosling and Rachel McAdams should do a romcom playing this Mooney pilot chasing true love in fog, with McAdams crying/screaming at the ocean while Gosling slowly descended into the waves, call it the Logbook,
Later NTSB concluded that cause of crash was due to inability to effective communicate between sexes and recommended that “men are from mars women are from venus” be part of all pilot training curriculum
Ease of production. The vertical and horizontal stabilizers are all the same shape. The skin can be made by a single piece of aluminum and is interchangeable.
Can’t tell from the screenshot what time of day it is. If it’s early morning, I’m diverting. If it’s afternoon, I’m diverting. If it’s late morning and I have fuel, I’m going sightseeing for an hour and then try again.
I landed there in foggy conditions - basically would have been an SVFR/Contact approach if it was controlled.
Departed on IFR plan pretty much straight out, but we had our life jackets handy.
Spot the runway:

When I lived in arcata and had like more than half my flights out of mckinleyville canceled, I was told that airport was specifically built to be in the foggiest place they could find, for training ww2 pilots to fly in shitty conditions. Job well done I guess
Yeah that’ll be a no from me dawg
Too many trees/ buildings/ etc pp for non precision
Add that it’s single engine
On the pacific coast
Nope nope nope nope
Fog was in and out all morning at Shelter Cove. On the deck, very sparse but persistent. This guy was just doing laps praying for the fog to break. Interesting thing is he made it in though. And shortly after this the fog broke and it was a sunny afternoon.
