Reddit Alternatives You Should Use (TL;DR)
Posted by popcar2@reddit | RedditAlternatives | View on Reddit | 495 comments
I've seen a lot of back and forth on this sub and thought to make a post of all the good alternatives I've tried and which ones I would recommend. Right now, most of these are in early beta so don't expect something completely hassle-free. Instead, focus on which ones have the most potential to be something special.
Kbin.social
My personal favorite of the bunch. Kbin is a part of the Fediverse. If you don't know what that is, think of it as a connected web where anyone can host a server and communicate with other servers. What makes Kbin so good is that it's really polished and feature-rich despite being in early beta. It can communicate with Lemmy and Mastodon, which means there's already a sizable community to jump into. The on-boarding process is good as well, you can just sign up and browse content without worrying too much about Fediverse shenanigans. If you don't know where to go, start here.
It has a few issues (namely that some smaller Lemmy communities don't show up for some reason), but it's likely they'll be fixed later. The dev is quite active, and there is an official mobile version planned. It's also a bit confusing for people unfamiliar with the Fediverse, but you'll get used to it quickly.
Pros:
-
Clean GUI, perfectly good mobile website
-
Well-connected with the Fediverse, shows Lemmy instances and Mastodon posts by default without much hassle
-
Runs well without Javascript
Lemmy
The most popular alternative right now. Lemmy is the most similar to Reddit and has a minimalist, simple UI. There are some controversies surrounding Lemmy but the TL;DR is just don't use official instances (lemmy.ml, lemmygrad) and instead use community ones because of their dubious moderation and communist views. Consider https://beehaw.org/ , http://lemmy.world/ , https://sh.itjust.works/ .
Again, Lemmy is a part of the Fediverse. It doesn't really matter which instance you are specifically on, since you can browse and communicate with other instances easily. What makes Lemmy a good option is that it's relatively stable, simple, and has a booming community. There are also mobile applications like Jerboa, and it seems like it might be getting the most support in the very near future.
Pros:
-
Clean, reliable UI
-
Decent mobile apps exist already
-
Largest community so far
Tildes.net
Tildes is a promising alternative that's been gaining traction recently. It's still in early alpha and unfortunately is invite only. What's interesting about it is that it's text-only and seems like a place that fosters quality discussions. The goal isn't to be Reddit, but rather be a reddit-esque place without all the memes and shitposting.
pros:
-
Very simple and straightforward
-
Text-only, created for quality discussions
Squabbles.io
Squabbles is an interesting brand new website. It mixes the ease of browsing of Twitter with the long threads of Reddit. You can scroll down to quickly read posts and top comments without having to enter threads or click anywhere else. This seems like it could be a good casual talk website and a good place for memes. I can see myself browsing here when I'm bored.
pros:
-
Very simple to use
-
Fun for casual browsing
Other ones worth mentioning
-
Raddle.me is a simple version of Reddit. The UI kind of embraces early 2000's websites with bright colors and weird side banners. There's nothing inherently wrong with Raddle but it seems kind of redundant compared to other ones mentioned.
-
Sqwok.im is an interesting one where instead of comments, threads are a live chat anyone can hop into. Sqwok is pretty basic and is more of a novelty than a website I'd recommend for now imo. The idea of every thread being a chat means everyone is too split and the person you'll reply to likely left the chat an hour ago already.
-
Pillowfort.social is a Tumblr alternative that may be gaining traction recently. I'm not a fan of Tumblr, but it's worth mentioning.
-
Stacker News is a Hacker News clone (if you didn't get that from the title). I don't like it very much because it seems very crypto-focused and has web3 shenanigans with their own crypto coin you earn by posting. That always goes down well, doesn't it?
Closing thoughts
I understand the decision paralysis a lot of people are having, but really I think you should just settle down and try one. You're not making a blood pact by registering to a website and giving it a shot. Try some of these and settle on whichever is more comfortable to you.
Let me know if I missed any big ones.
MereRedditUser@reddit
From what I've read, reddit as a platform isn't so much an issue as (i) its lack of accountability in moderation and (ii) the weaponization of its comment karma system. On the plus side is the 1-level deep subreddit structure so that you can quickly access a particular interest and not rely on following specific individuals. Do the reddit alternatives address these pros and cons?
Few_Ad_5257@reddit
Why is Reddit so damn strict?
Few_Ad_5257@reddit
Here is what I want in a Reddit alternative:
More lenient, less communism
No archiving posts at all. Stays open indefinitely
Less strict
captain_americano@reddit
I think that decision paralysis is partially from many users, myself included, using Reddit as their only/primary internet landing page these days. People are looking for that single source of community and information that will mirror Reddit, but these sites aren't quite there yet. Federated sites are also a bit confusing, but at this point maybe working with confusing & slightly inefficient sites is the price to pay to avoid imploding monoliths like Reddit and Twitter.
I'm going to be trying a few out at the same time. After so long, it's going to be a tough shift from using mostly one site to "reverting" back to checking multiple sites/forums/feeds/etc. As they expand, each site might offer a different type of community, which would also be a nice break from seeing the same recycled viewpoints and word-for-word comments.
This post was stream of conscious typing as I avoid work, sorry if parts of it don't make sense. People smarter than me might be able to expand on what I'm grasping at.
Upswing5849@reddit
Since reddit has started really sucking over the last few years, I find myself returning to good old fashion forums more and more, and the experience is rewarding. There's something to be said for the autonomy and isolation that comes with a dedicated forum to a subject.
There's also Discord, which I don't really understand tbh. Maybe I should give that more of a fair shake, but seems to not really be what I'm looking for.
I also use RSS a lot more than I used to.
Reddit is terrible these days and getting worse all the time. Most/all of the social media sites have gone seriously downhill.
PruglePin@reddit
This. I'm a pretty tech savvy person and lemmy is not user friendly at all. Oddly I think discord is the closest thing to a reddit replacement. The only thing is you can't search the internet and get results from a discord server. The threads and posts on discord are really nice in those larger communities.
BlithelyOblique@reddit
Curious which sites you ended up trying and what you ended up liking!
KindaNeutral@reddit
My main concern is ease of indexing. I frequently turn to reddit since Google is getting worse and worse. If the fediverse can't really be searched as a whole, that would be a huge missing piece for me.
pyr0kid@reddit
agreed, every time i have a tech problem or are looking for tips i always add +reddit to the search.
its just easier to figure out if someone knows their shit on reddit as opposed to random websites google recommends that are clearly designed for people who dont know what "PC" actually means!
_yerffoeg_@reddit
this. this is how I go about researching anything.
TheFartingKing_56@reddit
Tip: Do site:reddit.com instead of +reddit. Instead of just including the word, it only includes the website.
myasterism@reddit
It’s shit like this that I’m gonna miss. Ughhh it’s starting to sink in…
Zanziv@reddit
Yeah exactly, OP provided to many alternatives. I want one single answer. I don’t want to analyze pros and cons and try 5 different websites
Zacny_Los@reddit
That's why we are using Kbin or Lemmy - one instance (no matter which) is enough to see content from all other instances.
Fritz46@reddit
Well.. Lemy doesn't allow porn
Zacny_Los@reddit
[ Removed by Reddit ]
tjofleR@reddit
That's how Lemmy and kbin are already starting to solve the chicken and egg problems of having enough users and content to attract more users to post more content.
It doesn't matter if each instance is small, because you're seeing and interacting (posting, commenting, voting) with content from the whole network.
megalodon7944@reddit
bit confused on how it works then - if all instances are seeing and interacting with all other instances, then what is the difference between each instance and why does it matter which one you choose? does it just come down to UI preference then?
DebateGullible8618@reddit
This is why people are over thinking it! It doesnt matter which instance you pick, just pick one that wont shut down and sign up!
Heavy-Capital-3854@reddit
UI and admins preference, the people running the instance can still control stuff like which other instances they federate(share content) with
tjofleR@reddit
Exactly! It (mostly) doesn't matter which instance to join, so there's no point overthinking it. (I'd recommend sh.itjust.works because sign-up is automatic and they're not overloaded)
While there are some Lemmy instances dedicated to certain topics, or regional ones (like feddit.de or reddit.it) most Lemmy's are just general. Here's a few things where choice of instance can matter: * Some instances restrict Community creation to admins only. For example beehaw.org does that at the moment to avoid splintering the users in too many sparse Communities * Some instances have disabled downvoting * Instances are free to block other instances. This is good because mainstream instances blocked the extremist instances * Many instances disallow porn, nudity, NSFW on Communities hosted by them
The UI is the same on all the Lemmy instances I've seen. Kbin.social isn't a Lemmy but shows much of the same content because it's all federated. I prefer kbin.social web interface, but their mobile app is still under development.
SupraMario@reddit
This is why I like tildes. It's like reddit back in the day. The federated sites have no real organization and are all over the place.
MedicByNight@reddit
How does one find an invite to tildes? As someone who browses anonymously (friends don't know me) on Reddit, I don't really have any way to get an invite through conventional methods.
I guess we wait until they change their strategy?
fireballs619@reddit
If you go to /r/tildes there is a thread to request invites. They send one to everyone who asks. The current one is locked right now because they just added a bunch of users and are giving them to adjust, but then next one will be posted tomorrow.
TheShreester@reddit
Suggestion: Why don't they allow people to register for Read Only access for a probationary period (such as a fortnight or even a month) and then allow Write priviliges once it ends?
This allows anyone interested to create an account, but delays how soon they can post comments.
sixthgear@reddit
I'm also looking for an invite if any Tilde users are happening to pass by this thread. It seems like the community I'm looking for!
doomsdayglock1@reddit
Same here. Lemmy.just seems like it has to much separation.
SupraMario@reddit
invites@tildes.net
Try that email asking for an invite. If the invites mega thread is locked right now.
TyrRev@reddit
Just from investigating it today, I do like that, as well as the discussion-based focus of it. I hope that as they get more users that the seemingly cozy and conversational vibe of the place remains. Shame that it's invite-only, though I'll have to try shooting an email to invites@tildes.net
SupraMario@reddit
I do wonder if it will stay invite only, I apparently have invites to hand out so I might do a thread of request invites or something here and everyone who has an account with invites can hand them out to people who actually want them
JhoodsLady@reddit
Looking 4 an invite as well if you have any left
SupraMario@reddit
Sent. I got 5 more recently.
JhoodsLady@reddit
Thank you
sixthgear@reddit
Hey, I've been reading Tildes threads for a couple of days and I'd love to start contributing. Do you think you could toss me an invite?
heffsta@reddit
I would love an invite too please

Thank you, I appreciate you <3
cocoagiant@reddit
Could I get an invite from you?
AriMaeda@reddit
I'm in the same boat, I've been lurking on Tildes for about a week now and really loving it! Could I get an invite?

If you have any more invites, I'd love to check it out.

How do you like tildes overall? I don't expect a reddit clone, but someplace to get interesting topics and conversation would be nice.
I would be interested in an invite if you have any to spare :)
JhoodsLady@reddit
Looking for a Tildes invite if u have
SupraMario@reddit
So far it's been great, it's designed around the topics and conversation vs shit posting right now.
Invite sent in PM.
dty840@reddit
Awesome, that is great to hear! Thanks for the invite, I look forward to exploring the site!
grapefruit_crackers@reddit
Me please if you have any left! Thanks much 🤗
SupraMario@reddit
I don't sorry. Ping one of the people I sent an invite to already, they should have 5 invites now
Hasaan5@reddit
My main problem with tildes is that it doesn't want to grow, and it's focus on text is going to leave it relegated to the sidelines. Like sure, focusing on longform content is good and all, but right now reddit does that and lets you post pictures and videos and stuff. Not a very good alternative if it only gives half the uses of the thing it's replacing.
fireballs619@reddit
Yeah if you’re looking for those things Tildes probably won’t scratch that itch. I’d just point out though that a alternative is not a replacement and Tildes isn’t really trying to copy all the features reddit offers. Think of it more as being like what reddit was like 10 or 15 years ago.
Hasaan5@reddit
Even reddit back then was still full of images, even if they hadn't taken over yet with the fluff to article ratio the other way around. The aim for tildes seems to be for a reddit that was very short lived, and one that wasn't that big, with /r/TrueReddit being whats left of that kind of thinking. Just seems like a waste to me when it could be so much more.
SupraMario@reddit
Hosting video and images is very bandwidth and storage heavy. Remember reddit didn't do anything but text and links for the longest time and relied on imgur to handle that load. Tildes allows for links, it works no problem that way.
Hasaan5@reddit
Oh I'm aware of that, it's just even linking to an image or gif is discouraged if it isn't going to lead to an in-depth conversation. This is just how the head admin thinks though so it's not a concrete thing but still impedes the place replacing reddit.
breakfast-lasagna@reddit
Yeah I tried lemmy and it was a bit confusing. I may try beehaw or whatever instead. Tilde was a lot simpler to start using, but the users and content aren't quite there yet.
SupraMario@reddit
beehaw is part of lemmy. Lemmy is just the federation of all of the sites together, they all seem to use the same design. The good thing about tildes is that the RIF dev is building a app for it. I'm hoping it becomes the home of the reddit converts as lemmy is just way to much of a mess.
hellrazor862@reddit
Oh that's awesome news! I have had a tildes account for a while but don't visit very often. An app would be great
SupraMario@reddit
Yea, he is saying Dec he wants to have an app for it
https://tildes.net/~tildes/15or/tildes_fundraiser_june_2023_encourage_an_app_developer_me_to_work_on_a_tildes_app_faster_by
breakfast-lasagna@reddit
Tildes is probably my favorite so far. I tried kbin, but they are requiring email on sign up. Beehaw is requiring some questionnaire to sign up as well. Tildes requires an invite to be able to register. Hopefully they will open up more as more people leave reddit.
SupraMario@reddit
Kbin looks way to much space between posts, it's not simplified enough. I think I'm going to start a post over on /r/redditalternatives for everyone to hand out invites from Tildes since users get like 5 invites to hand out, but I need to make sure this is ok with the dev.
TheoryOfTheInternet@reddit
Only speaking for myself, none of the "Reddit Alternatives" are cutting it for me so far. That's not meant to undermine any of them though.
What I have been doing is using a variety of internet forums.
Very_Bad_Janet@reddit
Which forums? I'm looking for suggestions
TheoryOfTheInternet@reddit
Most of mine are very specific, such as forums for the car I own, or specific hobbies like scuba.
esean_keni@reddit
Perhaps you could give Spyke a try. We've built it ourselves and its currently app only.
Anomander@reddit
That's a barrier, honestly.
Why?
JamieTheCasul@reddit
Not saying this is their reason but one of the major reasons platforms like reddit want people to use their apps is no adblock. They can make the app free with ads, then charge people a sub to remove them.
thorny-devil@reddit
Yeah fuck that.
VoluminousVictor@reddit
Can you add an option to login without Google connection?

Google-fu, forums, and RSS seem to be the way to go without a dominant Reddit alternative that a critical mass already occupies. Those things stick around through thick and thin.
In just a week, we have seen a massive breadth of supposedly Reddit-like competition in the space paired with a massive amount of flux and growing pains.
May take some time to see who the real winner(s) in this space will be. Even then, most people say they want a Reddit alternative, but what they mean is that they want an alternative built for how they use Reddit.
TheoryOfTheInternet@reddit
Once my own alternative is up and running, stable, and with the basics running smoothly, adding RSS support (both incoming and outgoing) is something I'm strongly considering doing.
Google (search) has massive problems, but that's another topic.
You either clone software, or you make software. Cloning is a great way to quickly get something up and running, but it's just a clone, lacking in uniqueness. Making software is incredibly complex, time-consuming, and risky. I'm one of those "idiots" in the later category, hah.
Growing pains are absolutely normal. One can try to "premaurely optimize" everything, but to an extent it's sometimes better to optimize as problems happen. The problems though with a lot (but not all) of the alternatives so far is they don't appear to understand scaling-issues at all.
One of the huge problems most platforms face, is they're not useful when they're small. They're also not unique. Why use the 150th Reddit clone, when Reddit exists, even if Reddit sucks?
VoluminousVictor@reddit
I would use remind me but.... Well...
TheoryOfTheInternet@reddit
Hah. Don't worry, my project will make the rounds when ready.
bettervanilla@reddit
If you don't mind, I'd like to add your project to my megathread. Since you don't have anything live yet, would you have a comment or thread that best encapsulates your project?
niomosy@reddit
I don't think we'll see a new dominant central location for a while. People want to try out other things, niche forums, federation rather than centralization. We had Usenet. Reddit has been Usenet 2.0. It will be a bit before the new Usenet 3.0 site comes along.
esean_keni@reddit
Perhaps you could give https://spyke.social a try. We've built it ourselves and its currently app only.
liveyourdreamsmax@reddit
Yea, we can't force in such a short timespan the organic growth reddit experienced over the course of years. My subs on reddit are not ultra niche....but expecting to find a single landing page that has Elden Ring discussion as well as politics, DIY tips, etc is asking for a lot.
The bottom line is reddit is being a bunch of jerks!
FanClubs_org@reddit
I have given this a lot of thought over the years, but ultimately decided to scale back and take a broad, but contained approach with our forums and Fan Clubs.
For the beta period, our forums will include sports and teams, video games, movies, TV, and comics. Everything else would be in off topic until it's time to grow.
I hope it's a viable option for some of you.
Jimmni@reddit
Reddit experienced explosive growth over literally the course of a couple of days as essentially the entire Digg userbase migrated here.
myasterism@reddit
Jesus, I had forgotten about that.
MysteriousBack3486@reddit
Is digg still around?
FaeryLynne@reddit
Technically yes, but it's no longer user driven and it's just a bunch of clickbaity articles in a format that's similar to the MSN or Bing News start pages.
MysteriousBack3486@reddit
If I could find another alternative without politics that would be a major W
cocoagiant@reddit
I was able to get reddit to do this through RES. Every time a major political issue comes up, I just add it to a keyword list of posts which are invisible to me.
Especially in 2016-2020, made Reddit way more fun for me.
MysteriousBack3486@reddit
Nice!
MysteriousBack3486@reddit
If I could find another alternative without politics that would be a major W
lgodsey@reddit
Most people who dislike /r/politics just don't like that their hateful, bigoted politics are not celebrated.
MysteriousBack3486@reddit
Nah. Just interesting is so much more meaningful and eliciting topics. Most people who like politics have depressive tendencies
unosami@reddit
Can’t be done. If you have any two people interact then politics will eventually manifest.
MysteriousBack3486@reddit
Can be done. By the site actually blocking suck subreddit or topics.
Don_Thuglayo@reddit
Well what's new about that reddit has always been full of jerks lol
ccellist@reddit
It's fascinating that Reddit managed to turns everyone's attention, focus, and hatred, from handful of mods that ran everything, to the entire platform. Has to be the fastest pivot for the largest group of people in history.
ColoneISanders@reddit
Some of us even like to get into circles!
redpenquin@reddit
As a jerk, I agree.
zachatree@reddit
I feel you. I think Reddit sorta broke how I used the internet. I need to relearn checking websites again. Shit what are good websites now a days? Last time I casually browsed the net was back when stumble upon and boingboing were still top dogs.
SimplyQuid@reddit
It's going to be really weird to have like, an RSS feed or a full list of regularly checked bookmarks
1080Pizza@reddit
RSS is the way! I have almost no bookmarks, but 100+ feeds on lots of subjects, along with some individual bloggers / newsletter people who share links to interesting articles 1-3 times a week.
PluotFinnegan_IV@reddit
do you use an app or something to manage so many feeds? That's the piece that boggles my head.
Mezkezy@reddit
Just started using NetNewsWire on iOS and it is very user friendly for someone new to RSS
cailian13@reddit
Will check it out, suggestions for ones that will also have desktop in some way? I spend my day in front of multiple big screens, picking the phone up is less optimal in my office setup.
MeteorPhoenix@reddit
Also want to suggest Feeder if you have android. It's free and open source.
And remember that even if a site doesn't advertise it has rss, it usually still does.
ZappyZane@reddit
My problem with current RSS aggregators are lack of offline mode.
Things like Feedly, Flipbook, Inoreader etc are either assuming always online connection, logins, privacy and other niggles.
Sometimes i'm somewhere with poor data connections, and just prefer to download a day/weeks worth of news, and just open the app and read.
Currently using Flym, but it's not an aggregator which suggests stuff, you need to know what RSS links to give it. Also a lot of places don't seem to supply good RSS anymore, you get very basic info, assuming you'll click thru to their website.
Very much hoping for new suggestions though.
MeteorPhoenix@reddit
In terms of privacy, I highly recommend Feeder. It's one of the few suggested by privacyguides, so it's as respectful of your privacy as you get. But it's similar to Flynn in that you need to give it links.
Sites are really poor at giving you the rss links these days, but the vast majority of them will have them anyway. You might have to tinker with the url, but I noticed that even just giving Feeder the main url will return the valid rss link without much finagling.
Anyway, for me, it's not a replacement for Reddit. I don't think anything can. But a combination of rss, old forums and googling will probably be enough on my end.
Yay295@reddit
For example, there are actually RSS feeds for YouTube playlists. You can't subscribe to a playlist, but you can follow its RSS feed. They look like https://www.youtube.com/feeds/videos.xml?playlist_id=PL6NdkXsPL07IOu1AZ2Y2lGNYfjDStyT6O
1080Pizza@reddit
I use Feedly, and I'm lucky to have an old account where the limit on the free version isn't 100 feeds.
Otherwise, most of my sources only post something 1-4 times a week or even less frequently, so that keeps the amount of content to scroll through manageable. But like Reddit, I also don't read every single post that comes through the feed.
Yay295@reddit
I use the Feedbro browser app.
dayvid182@reddit
Do any readers group topics into one instance? I tried an RSS feeder the other day for a minute, but each reply from one thread was a separate message.
IAMA_Plumber-AMA@reddit
I even have a (sort of) google reader knockoff spooled up and ready to go, I was mostly using it to RSS my favourite webcomic sites, but it looks like I'll be using it a lot more as a Reddit stand-in temporarily.
CJKatz@reddit
I gave up on RSS feeds back in 2010, which is why I joined Reddit in the first place!
Super_Parsley@reddit
I'm the opposite. I never tried RSS feeds but I plan to do that now and use mastadon.
Ekgladiator@reddit
I still use bookmarks but I also have been using toby to put all the websites I actually care about in my new tab. I used to use awesome new tab page and then awesome hq but toby replaced awesome hq after the dude abandoned it.
It definitely will be weird not having reddit after using it for 10+ years.
Ethab83@reddit
Thanks for showing this to me, what a life changer.
scstraus@reddit
I've kept maintaining an RSS feed, and honestly find more quality stuff there than I do on Reddit, but it's not quite as personalized, so a bit more scrolling to get to each item.
Very_Bad_Janet@reddit
Out of curiosity, what sites do you have in your reader? It's been so long since I've used an RSS reader (10 years?) that I don't even know what to subscribe to, lol.
scstraus@reddit
I don't see an easy way to export them on Feedly at the moment, but basically the thing to do is just note which sites you see a lot when browsing Reddit and add those. Once you start looking out for good sites to add you start finding them.
Very_Bad_Janet@reddit
I'm realizing that I subscribe to a lot of newsletters from websites and blogs, and that i can just use the Social tab in my Gmail as a RSS. It doesn't give me the community aspect and serendipity of finding something unexpected on my feed that I enjoy with Reddit, but its something. I've signed up for Lemmy but haven't gotten in yet.

These resources should be a good starting point for you:
kalayasha@reddit
Sad my first response was to save this comment. It’s going to be rough.
bettervanilla@reddit
Update: Mix is where StumbleUpon actually moved to. Cloudhiker is similar to StumbleUpon, but I'm not sure of its origins.
AllHailTheCeilingCat@reddit
I'm emailing reference post/comment text to myself. No idea how long those will be around.
pyr0kid@reddit
spacebattles.com is pretty nice, though most their traffic is in creative writing.
haunt_the_library@reddit
I agree. It’s my primary landing space for News and discussion. If there’s another app that pops up with the same ease of use and content, I’ll switch right away.
Zhaeris@reddit
That's exactly it! My niche subreddits and their members are like family and friends and to have it centralized in one easy place to go, stress-free was the selling point..
I feel like the family has been just exploded and all flying off to different places in the cosmos and I fear I won't find them again and I'll be left alone feeling strange and off on the internet
sedition@reddit
People used to be confused by the concept of a blog on the internet. They'll adapt.
LifeHasLeft@reddit
Yeah, I remember when I started using Reddit, it was already coined as “the front page of the internet”. It really was designed well but it grew organically too.
I also agree that the fediverse can be confusing. And it’s worse when you read things, like this very post, that say “stay away from xyz because they’re Nazi psychopaths”. It’s a little too common to find communities of authoritarian nutjobs in the fediverse because of the inherent freedom to share whatever you want without being censored or banned.
Which brings me to one key feature of Reddit that is going to be hard to replicate elsewhere: the booming community of mods who actually care about their communities. They are truly the real reason Reddit became what it did.
Violet_Nite@reddit
stupid idea: go back to 4chan and add /reddit
FlexicanAmerican@reddit
I've been going through the list and noting which ones are the most seamless transition here. I've basically narrowed it down to 4 or so and I'll try to spend more time with them over the next few days to make some final commentary.
niomosy@reddit
My hypothesis is that there won't really be one for a while. Online forums are cyclical in terms of expansion and consolidation. BBS expansion led to FidoNet and Usenet consolidation. Web forums caused expansion with link aggregator sites moving to consolidation with Reddit essentially becoming Usenet 2.0.
It seems we're due for a new round of expansion. A diaspora of users. Discord seems a target for many, particularly given they now have forum channels so you can have your forum style posts in addition to IRC and voice chat in one spot.
We'll probably see Usenet 3.0 but just as Reddit didn't exist when Usenet died, I suspect the new Usenet doesn't yet exist either.

i wish there was something that visually looked more like old reddit.
i want thumbnails, but i don't want them to be massive. i want expandos that collapse the text and let me click a button to view it inline.
lots of them go for that new reddit "make every submission gigantic on the home page so you only get a small handful". at my resolution, i can see 13 submissions when i look at the home page of this sub. in /r/InTheRing (a sub with thumbnails), i can see 9. on kbin, i can see 4.
also, i'm a little skeptic on the federated design of kbin and can definitely see it causing problems. for example, when i go to their technology section, there's a banner at the top that says:
that's NOT what i want to see when i'm looking for replacement options. it sucks the ruqqus closed, because that looked like it had genuine potential to be a serious reddit competitor if people signed up / used it.
tildes is never going to be a viable replacement if it's text only. text isn't just memes, there are topics where videos are relevant. also, you're never going to see something like /r/Animewallpaper on tildes.
squabbles is too twitter and not enough reddit. looks more random discussion and less submission based.

Mind commenting on the UI of my decentralized site’s design? I will have an extremely early beta next week most likely:
https://old.reddit.com/r/RedditAlternatives/comments/144s8rh/_/jnijgz5
anadem@reddit
Yes that looks nice. Will you send invites for your extremely-early-beta or post sign-ups somewhere?
Like reaper527 I'd eventually want it browser-accessible not just an app (and non-nightmode)
busymom0@reddit
Yes, initially it's a website only. Once I have the core features working in the website, then I will build the app too (which shouldn't take too long as I have plenty of experience in iOS and Android development).
Themes will be fully customizable, though initially I might start with just one.
I will share it on here along with some invite codes to test it out. Though I want it to be widely accessible asap.

reaper527@reddit
the UI looks PERFECT (well, aside from being a nightmode design, but i'm assuming that's something you're going to let people toggle between that and a normal white background, because no single color scheme will please everyone).
my only concern is that the description makes it sound like it's app only and not something that can be accessed via a webbrowser. that's going to be a dealbreaker.
other than that, the only other real standout thing is the lack of expandos. one of the best features of old reddit (with res)'s design is that when a tweet/picture/youtube video/etc. is posted, it shows like how it does in your screenshot, but it has a little icon someone can click to get an inline version (at a reasonable size for such a thing) without having to actually leave the page.
over all though, it looks great.
busymom0@reddit
Yep. In my hacker news app for example, I let users change the color of background, tint color etc. Some might like white background, some like dark blue background, some like dark grey background, some like jet black background. So all that will be customizable eventually.
What do you mean by "description makes it sound"? Initially it will be a website only and once the core features in the website are built, then I will build the apps too.
Yes, I will add the "expand" button for previewing the content. So embedded content can be previewed by clicking the preview button.

There's actually a "compact mode" on Kbin in the options you can turn on. It makes the website a lot more usable. Again, all of these websites are very early in their lifetime, it's likely more options will be provided in the future.

there's definiely a middleground between those old obsolete forum designs and the new "everything is massive" design, and old reddit finds that middleground perfect.
also, worth noting, that phpbb inspired layout lacks a true front page, so it's not going to scale to something that can represent hundreds of subs that someone might be subscribed to (and thousands total). additionally, it doesn't have a combined frontpage with stories from all of someone's subscriptions.
CanadaPlus101@reddit
It looks like it doesn't nest comments, either.

I feel like the alternative that will manage to take off is one that will manage to migrate the NSFW community.
After all, Reddit's NSFW community days are counted. No way it's surviving the IPO, can't have the shareholder being scared off.
And I doubt the main Lemmy instances are allowing it considering their views...
Any suggestion?

Isn't nsfw = just stolen porn? Not at any point in years did I use reddit for porn.
Eljimb0@reddit
You were downvoted but nobody replied to you for your question.
No. It is not. Gonewild and other subs have been around for ages (I'm 11 yr club and gw is what got me to make an account), with voluntarily created adult content by individuals. That isn't to say there aren't a ton of subs full of tons of clips of adult content from professionals, but by and large (at least in my viewing experience) most of the content one comes across is community created. In recent years, this community created content has been used for content creators to advertise their only fans and stuff, but those individuals are still posting their own content.
There is a massive NSFW presence on Reddit. It is one of the only places I can read an article about a monkey running switches at a trainyard, see about union job calls, watch an adult clip, then read about politics all in one format.
I agree with the above poster, the place that gets the NSFW crowd will probably thrive the best
ShadowKnight058@reddit
Pillowfort might be okay, haven’t checked it out but seems promising
Calipup@reddit
It depends. I think Reddit is making a huge push to hide it as much as possible, but still keeping it around because it has big traffic numbers. So some 12 year old or 45 year old pure mom isn't going to ever happen upon it, but for everyone already in the system or knows Reddit has it can find it.
Lightprod@reddit
Their heavy push to hide it is a way to kill it faster.
They could have forced login to see an NSFW post but they decided to remove it entirely from the 3rd party API.
For me, that's not a sign of them willing to keep it. Add the moderators tools / bots getting destroyed with the change (I don't trust spez words at all), there's clearly an agenda to kill porn on reddit, concequences be damned.
Tumblr and Imgur did it. Onlyfans tried. Reddit is next.
Hasaan5@reddit
They already hide it as much as possible, eventually the only thing they'll have left to do is kill it.

Ive been here since reddit was under a million users
people think something is going to be the next tiktok and have a billion users in a month
it wont. Facebook didnt, twitter didnt. A reddit alternative will be a slow build
there might be a dozen alternatives now but there always is on new stuff. Then things dwindle down to 1 or 2.
scstraus@reddit
I joined reddit 16 years ago, and honestly the golden period was probably right around when it had a million users. Lemmy is quickly getting to the golden period. At it's current rate of growth, I think it will be there within months. It's already better than reddit in terms of conversation.
grabityrising@reddit
The million was a nice time. People had conversations. Now it seems so much hot takes and go.
havent tried lemmy. Seems techy enough that will keep the casuals away.
scstraus@reddit
Exactly. Same as reddit was in the beginning. In reality it took me about 1-2 hours to fully figure it out, so it's not a very big investment, though those first 1-2 hours are a bit of a learning curve. I kind of like that there's a bit of a barrier to entry.
It's good enough already that I just come to reddit to counter disinformation about fediverse alternatives. I do all my actual usage on lemmy. It's actually already a better experience for me because all the conversations are actually good discussions rather than just a bunch of jokes and hot takes.
iris700@reddit

BannanDylan@reddit
I tried to sign up to 3 different Lemmy servers and I'm still waiting on my account getting approved. I consider myself pretty tech savvy but Lemmy already feels like more work is required for what people are looking for.
People just wanna sign up and browse, not learn how to use a website. Squabbles.io is pretty decent for this, very simple but it's still missing a lot of features that'll hopefully be included if it gets more traffic.
violet-crayola@reddit
Exactly. Non techies will never use Lemmy. Same way people dont go back to using irc

mackrevinack@reddit
people need to stop selling federation as this big feature. im interested in that kind of thing myself but 99% of the people i know couldn't give a rat's ass whether its centralised or whateveralised. they care about whether its good or not
testmeharder@reddit
It's a big feature because it avoids the sort of sh-t Reddit itself was able to pull and hence why people are looking for alternatives to it. If there isn't a central platform that can be run as a fiefdom, you protect yourself from this failure mode.
Oh_G_Steve@reddit
It just sounds like Mastadon or a Discord Server or a Facebook Group with extra steps. I don't want to filter through multiple platforms of the same niche. Reddit does a good job of making sure there aren't duplicate subreddits serving the same purpose and that's a feature that the vast majority of these alternatives are missing. I don't want to find something for RX-7 enthusiasts but have to decide which of the 5 RX-7 platforms I want to focus all my time in.
YesOfficial@reddit
Is the web world-wide? Cos this sounds like something I heard about in the 90s
b1__@reddit
Lemmy is built on the ActivityPub protocol, which is now a W3C approved open-standard for social networking platforms. Kbin also uses ActivityPub therefore Kbin instances (Kbin.social, fedia.io) can talk to Lemmy instances (Lemmy.world, Beehaw, Sh.itjust.works). Kbin is written in PHP, and Lemmy is written in the Rust programming language.
The world wide web, in comparison, is built on the http and more recent encrypted https protocol I believe (not an expert).
They are just universal standards that allow the users of each unique and separate piece of software to talk to each other.
Then there's Nostr, a broadcast protocol. Nostr is pub/sub, distributed, decentralized (not an expert - this is copy-paste). Nostr is about encypting everything. It's not P2P. Not sure if Nostr instances will be able to talk to Lemmy or Kbin instances (the Fediverse).
Then there's standalone and separate encrypted P2P social network platforms like Plebbit and raddi.net, Aether, Retroshare (again, not an expert).
Then there's the other standalone options: Squabbles (same setup as Reddit), Tildes.
YesOfficial@reddit
Ye, I guess the main question there is why ActivityPub is better than HTTPS for this purpose. Also there's federated social networks using HTTPS, so the benefit of federation isn't in the protocol. I'd compare it to what torrents are to download sites.
b1__@reddit
I don't think ActivityPub can be compared to https, they do different things and can work on top of each other. https allows websites to communicate with each other (external website links work for example); ActivityPub allows things like upvote and downvotes to be accumulated from different sites and added to your total upvotes, and whatever else social media sites do.
Reddit uses http, but has programmed its own social media features. Maybe if everyone leaves for the Fediverse they could convert their site to ActivityPub standard and join the Fediverse in future, lol.
(Nostr is a replacement for Twitter, btw, not Reddit, from my post above.)
Rokketeer@reddit
I don't think my analogy is entirely accurate, but this is how it finally clicked for me: Imagine someone releases the Reddit source code. Reddit can run on its own server, but other people can run their own Reddit 'copies' on their own servers.
Each copy has its own rules and some might have upvotes/downvotes turned off, etc. The important thing is, each 'copy' chooses which other 'copies' it decides to talk to, and which it blacklists. So you are effectively seeing content from other approved servers that your 'copy' allows and can interact with those users as well as though you were all on one website. As a user, you wouldn't even notice.
Your agency comes in the fact that you can choose which 'copy' you want to join based on how aligned to your values the owner is to your own.
fatcatfan@reddit
So how do I know which one I should join???
gcruzatto@reddit
Does the upvote count reflect the total of all connected instances, or is it just showing local upvotes?
Rokketeer@reddit
That’s a good question, I’m not sure. My guess is that it’s only counting local stats.
nerdening@reddit
How does this work in conjunction with moderation? If I create a server and decide to make my server about, let's say, how to pirate the shit out of everything - how can Lemmy, at large, police and remove my server from Lemmy, at large?
Or, what's to stop someone from setting up a sex trafficking ring on Lemmy? Is there a mechanism to keep bad actors from jeopardizing the project at large?
phire8@reddit
Lemmy, at large, has no control over all Lemmy instances. If you setup a Lemmy server and decide to host communities focused on pirated shit the only person able to stop it is you. Other instances/servers of Lemmy can either recognize you or ignore you, but they can’t moderate you.
Imagine instead of all subreddits being on the same server owned by Reddit, each subreddit is now hosted on their own server, with their own rules and their own moderation. Each of these “subreddit” instances can see one another and interact with one another, but there’s no “overarching ruler” like with Reddit Admins. If one instance or “subreddit” decides to go completely rogue, other instances or “subreddits” can ignore them or even block them from appearing on their instance… but they can’t totally wipe out the rogue instance from existing, because they have no power or authority to do so, it’s a totally separate server that just happens to be running the same Lemmy software as everyone else.
Zacny_Los@reddit
You don't need to understand the technical details to appreciate the plethora of content that such a solution provides the average user.
qwqwqw@reddit
I kinda do. I'm forever in that sweet spot of being just competent enough with these things to know that I know sweet jack all.
So if I don't understand the technical details... Then I have questions like where's my data going? Is the community spread across different servers with different owners? Does that mean a malicious actor could edit my comment (oh hey /u/Spez) if I posted in a server they controlled?
There's also the question of security. How are the different protocols protected? I'm not gonna bullshit you and say I can answer what makes https secure apart from Chrome telling me it's secure ;) but who creates the protocols, how robust are they, etc.
As you can tell. I know nothing. But I know enough to kinda know what words mean, and to kinda know what I should try to find out...
aMAYESingNATHAN@reddit
The main protocol used is ActivityPub which is open source, which doesn't guarantee that it is secure but it does make it much more likely. Open code means any vulnerabilities get picked up pretty quickly.
Jacen47@reddit
your data is going to an instance server that anyone in a federated instance that is/does not block your instance can see depending upon your post privacy. users from federated instances can follow users on other instances to see their follower only posts.
a malicious acting server owner could edit any content on servers they control, but this is not a problem most long lasting instances have.
Instances are just as secure as any other cloudflare site
I-Am-Uncreative@reddit
It's sort of similar to the way the Usenet worked, except faster and bigger.
hellrazor862@reddit
It is indeed spread across a bunch of servers with different owners, and yes they can do whatever they want with your info in their database.
I signed up to one of the biggest mastodon instances a few years ago. Mastodon is pretty not great, so I didn't hang around for too long at the time. Anyway, the enshittification of reddit and a discussion I had with somebody on here got me wondering if it had improved.
When I went to log in, my account was long gone, as the single dude who ran the server came across some personal problems and shut it down.
0/10 experience, would not recommend
niomosy@reddit
You do need to understand that there's "local" and "all" content, though. Else you'll end up creating a community that already has yet another larger community created... along with 5 other tiny communities of the same name on different servers.
Ohgodgethelp@reddit
There's so much content I don't know what's going on.
SpecialAgentPotato@reddit
I am new to the fediverse too but my rough idea without getting technical (yes I know its not perfect):
If reddit was a company owned hotel then the subreddits are the rented apartments. The fediverse is a village and places like kbin, mastodon and lemmy are their own independtly owned and maintained properties where the villagers regularly visit each other.
If the company owned reddit hotel makes some terrible decisions like say raising the rent to 20 million a month, anyone not stupid wealthy in that hotel is screwed. But in the fediverse analogy If one property owner decides to sell out or make terrible decisions, it does not ruin the whole village. If you were visitor then you stop visiting, if you lived on that property then you either move in with someone else in the village or make your own property (construction materials are free) and continue on with your social life.
Mr_Erratic@reddit
But is it more clear than the median explanation?

Where are the cons for your recommendations?
RGBchocolate@reddit
Lemmy instances are run by power trip kids banning everything and everyone they disagree with, free speech and diversity is not tolerated (similar like on Reddit in most of the subs)
Tildes, same as above except it's one opinionated owner
scstraus@reddit
That's a pretty big generalization considering there are more than 100 instances. You're telling me that every single one of those 100 instances are run by "power trip kids banning everything they disagree with"? Because in the past month I have seen a lot less modding (and need for it) than I've seen here. By maybe 1 or 2 orders of magnitude.
RGBchocolate@reddit
I hope you don't count instances with single or double digit numbers, hard to call that instance, people start showing true colors when they have at least thousands of users.
scstraus@reddit
There are at least 20-30 above 1000
popcar2@reddit (OP)
Nothing much, each website has its own experience and it's mostly down to preference. The only cons I would have is that everything other than Lemmy doesn't have a mobile app, and I don't actually have an account on Tildes because it's invite-only.
scstraus@reddit
Lemmy now has at least 4-5 mobile apps on each OS. I have 4 installed on iOS, and only stopped because I found one that I really liked (wefwef)
Vladimir1174@reddit
I've been using tildes and a 'con' for some people may be that it won't replace reddit. Like you said it's text only so there's not much in the way of memes or just short jokes in the comments. Most of the people there are there to have a conversation about a subject they're interested in. Great for people that want that but I don't see it replacing the meme culture that so many people came to reddit for
ewankenobi@reddit
That sounds like it is what Reddit used to be like in the good old days
AVTOCRAT@reddit
Don't want to beg for an invite off of you, but might I ask how you got one? Did you just happen to know somebody IRL?

I just commented in their open application thread earlier this week. I think it was on their subreddit. New accounts can't invite I think
anadem@reddit
True, I'm new there and was specifically told newbs don't get to invite anyone else.
HippySol@reddit
I believe that tildes is restricting invites during reddit's current 'crisis' in order to prevent an Eternal September event that would damage what the site has become. But if you LOVE reddit, you wont like tildes, unless you're an old school redditor who likes long form text only conversation.
ATLxLBC@reddit
This sounds like exactly what I want actually. Could you toss me an invite?
bloody_lumps@reddit
Can I get an invite?
Vladimir1174@reddit
I haven't been on it very long. I don't think newer accounts can invite
Mr_Mandrill@reddit
Kbin: I haven't really used it, but the whole fediverse thing looks even more if a mess when incorporating multiple types of platforms (mastodon, lemmy...). I know nothing of the people behind it either.
Lemmy: I see many people are upset because the people behind it are "tankies". Not that I really care, I just learned the meaning of that word, but it's hard to see them having a successful future while being so open about their extreme authoritarian political views.
Tildes: Very opinionated on the type of content the site is for. Only text posts and comments. I don't see it not staying a small forum. They actively don't want to be a reddit replacement.
No idea about squabbles.
lililililiililililil@reddit
I’m finally just checking out some of these alternatives and I’m just not sold on any of this federated instance site stuff. I mean, I don’t really understand it, but I have a CS degree, I could probably learn more about it. But it all seems so cryptoshitcoin/web3.0 marketing buzzword type of fad stuff.
Tildes, I kind of like. Looks good in mobile browser and looks like it could be expandable. Some of the posts reeeally remind me of of the beginning of the Digg V4 migration where a bunch of the older users hated it and didn’t want us to turn Reddit into Digg or change the culture and the rest were just excited to have a bunch of new people join the site.
Mr_Mandrill@reddit
Yeah, the fediverse seems cool enough if user friendliness wasn't a factor. I think a version of that with a single point of entry (a centralized authorization) would be a great compromise. You'd still depend on a single organization, but could still keep the decentralized communities. Hardcore decentralization like this I feel is just too much for most people. Like, yeah, Esperanto is great, you just have to learn it tho.
scstraus@reddit
It took me all of about an hour or two to get as comfortable using it as I am with reddit. Admittedly a bit of a steep learning curve for that hour or two, but quite short lived. Now I have it customized better than I had reddit.
JohnnyJayJay@reddit
Where do you get this from? I'm serious, the Fediverse has never made this impression on me. If anything, it's been the opposite. Is it just the use of the word "decentralisation"? Or do you have anything more concrete?
I think it's enough to see it like Email. Because Email uses pretty much the same idea of federation. (And I think everybody is ok with Email not being a single big tech company).
BannanDylan@reddit
Squabbles is pretty decent but lacks features, so if you join you're kind of in it hoping the Dev is going to a lot of the requests people have. Pretty simple though.

kbin supports lemmy, so in this case, why use lemmy if one can use kbin, which also supports mastodon, right?
scstraus@reddit
Same works the other direction. So just use the one you like and subscribe to the stuff you want from the others.
Gorbinius@reddit
That's true. Lemmy does also support Mastodon though, but not quite as seamlessly as Kbin. The main reasons to choose Kbin over Lemmy are the UI if you like it more (understanding that it can change as development goes on) and avoiding the controversies surrounding Lemmy with regard to the devs and politics in general. Mastodon integration being a bit better on Kbin can definitely be a reason too. I haven't spent much time on Kbin yet so I'm not actually super familiar with the exact differences in that integration but I know that Kbin does have a "boost" feature like Mastodon and upvotes translate to favorites on Mastodon. Lemmy also allows Mastodon users to post and comment in communities from Mastodon as well as subscribe to and see all posts from Lemmy communities on Mastodon (just like Kbin does both of those things as well) but I don't think the UI lends itself towards that integration quite as well. Like how Lemmy doesn't have an equivalent for boosting on Mastodon as far as I'm aware.
nerdening@reddit
Lemmy and mastodon should just fuck and get it over with lol

Here is a post that I made covering some of what is going on.
Here is a post from the guy that got banned by reddit for supporting lemmy and creating the r/lemmymigration. He has since been unbanned by reddit and made this post the other day.
There are others as well. It's a whole thing that I don't have the time to type up at the moment but my post that I linked first here should give you a decent overview of what's going on. Some people believe that we can take over the platform by creating new instances and that it won't be an issue. Others think we shouldn't support it at all seeing as the main devs currently are who they are and things like donations will go towards them. Others think that forking Lemmy and having new devs is the best option. I'm not exactly sure how I feel about what the best course of action is personally, but what I do know is that I refuse to support people like that.

Here's a good jumping-off point: https://www.reddit.com/r/RedditAlternatives/comments/143o5xd/reconsidering_my_support_for_lemmy/
popcar2@reddit (OP)
Yes. Lemmy does support seeing Kbin and Mastodon posts but it's not as seamless. I don't think most people are interested in interacting with Mastodon so it's mostly down to preference.
MichaelTen@reddit
Which of these have smartphone apps?
popcar2@reddit (OP)
Lemmy has plenty. I'm using Liftoff
rancor1223@reddit
Federated sites are not the way and will not replace Reddit no matter how much some want them too. The concept will just fly over people's head. It's too confusing and disjointed for regular people to use. Deciding which instance to join? Not happening.
Personally, I will probably take the opportunity and just quit this sort of social media. While I really enjoy the discussions, I can find some of those on specialised forums and most I simply don't need in my life. I don't need doomscrolling either.
I will setup RSS to get the news I need and that will be more than enough.
Wolf-Strong@reddit
Okay, can someone explain what a federated website is?
rancor1223@reddit
As far as I can tell, each federated website is its own "reddit" (with its own subreddits), but they can talk to each other and share content between each other.
LucianHodoboc@reddit
What about just using forums? There are hundreds of them out there looking for active users.
garrettw87@reddit
Gotta create accounts on every single one. Just a lot more friction-ful experience.
Wolf-Strong@reddit
This is exactly it. Forums are a great way to get into a niche community, but you need one account for EVERYTHING. Plus, when the owner of that one community gives up on the site, it has to fall on the financial burden of someone else, or it is forever shut down and gone from the world. All that knowledge is gone.
imfromwisconsin81@reddit
the issue is finding them.

twin-shadows@reddit
I came to Reddit after leaving Tumblr because it was during a lot of changes for the site. Reddit had some things that filled the same spaces as Tumblr for me like being able to search for a topic and find related things.
Blackfeathers_@reddit
Does Kbin have an App?
FishTank_Earth@reddit
https://saidit.net/s/WayOfTheBern/ has moved to SaidIt.net
danhakimi@reddit
Is there a good way to transfer a Lemmy account to kbin? Like, sometimes you can move an account between instances...
Personal-Pickle-boy@reddit
Hey guys. I just release my a little chrome extension I had been working on for a couple of years.
https://chrome.google.com/webstore/detail/sidesay-universal-comment/mjjijpamoiadghnhhngcmlldkjljgpek
Currently, it's not a true reddit alternative as I need to add some features such as notifications and trending sites etc, but you may find it interesting.
Cheers.
EAT_DA_POOPOO@reddit
None of these seem decentralized or federated, so they're not long term alternatives. You missed https://scored.co , which is more popular than any of these.
FlexicanAmerican@reddit
scored allows white supremacists and other questionable content. Unsurprisingly, a lot of alternatives that existed before the recent kerfuffle were people that left reddit because it wasn't "free speech" enough.
EAT_DA_POOPOO@reddit
That was the internet before corporate intrusion and walled-gardens. It is perfectly within your power to create a community that doesn't allow that.
Spraypainthero965@reddit
Not really, before big social media sites, moderators kicked white supremacists out of their communities just as often and they were relegated to their own spaces like stormfront.
FlexicanAmerican@reddit
Sure, but no one wants to transition to a site that is currently overrun by those types of people or was created specifically to host those people. There are other sites/communities that exist that aren't overrun by those people.
knbang@reddit
I'll go to an alternative that hosts those people as long as I can completely avoid interacting with them. But as you said if the entire community is purely those people, why would I want to deal with them.
FlexicanAmerican@reddit
Yeah, my approach was basically, "how long does it take to run into this content?" If I run into it within a few minutes of navigating the site and it's on the front page or whatever, then clearly that site has no issue with that content and a lot of those people. Just no point in transitioning there when there are other alternatives.
EAT_DA_POOPOO@reddit
Sure, but if you’re creating a list of alternatives, you should probably include the largest one, even if it doesn’t appeal to you personally.
FlexicanAmerican@reddit
I don't know why you want to die on this hill. OP didn't have to include it. And he's not making a comprehensive list. I already shared why it's might have been omitted. I can only think of two reasons: (1) you have a vested interest in the site, (2) you have a vested interest in the "ideals" promoted on the site. In either case, thanks for making it obvious.
I question the veracity of your claim that it's the largest.
"Free speech" people will find the "free speech" they're looking for without me or anyone else promoting it. Hell, they can all go on Twitter nowadays if they want.
EAT_DA_POOPOO@reddit
FlexicanAmerican@reddit
OP also wrote
Not sure why OP added that at the end since it seems to go completely against the point of his post, but point taken.
Fair enough.
Was not clear to me. I'd never heard of scored prior to today.
Yeah, but your replies weren't to OP, they were to me. And as was noted, OP said it was the ones he used/recommended.
We clearly focused on different things in the post. Doesn't help that OP contradicted themselves. Seems pointless to make this post if it's just going to be a regurgitation of the much more complete post. And if we take him at his word that it's just his recommendations, then the addition of scored isn't relevant.
yokaitheghost@reddit
One of the first things I see on the landing page is an anti-vax title in the Health community. I see why they didn't include it.
IntotheHorror@reddit
Eh it allows domestic terrorists thedonald on there. I'll pass.
Syd_of_Pentacles@reddit
Lemmy actually seems promising. We should spread the word.
LegitimateTask0@reddit
Squabbles.io is pretty rad. It's growing fast and now that users can create communities themselves, it's getting pretty damn interesting. Finding myself less on here and more on there tbh.
I_Miss_Daniel@reddit
The lack of downvotes worries me a bit.
Scede117@reddit
There is talk of devs working on this addition asap.
TheDuffmaster@reddit
That'd be huge
greenthenblue@reddit
Doesn’t require an email address to sign up either.
babysnatcherr@reddit
Yeah this is where I'm jumping off to. Looks and feels the best to me and the lone dev is seemingly trying to implement new features to support the migration.
Spiritual_Reason_69@reddit
Is there a downvote option/ability?
FlexicanAmerican@reddit
Not yet. There's lots of discussion about what the best approach is. The dev is very open to suggestions, so I'm sure it'll get added eventually. I think most want something of the sort.
ohmanstan@reddit
I see the future at squabbles. See you squabs in hell!
sizz@reddit
It's the best one so far. Their web design great, I like you can jump straight into comments and start shitposting.
Aquifel@reddit
Streamlining commenting without reading, the truest reddit experience, to hell with NSFW content support, this is what we've really been missing.
FYourShit@reddit
Just joined - looks great!
IntotheHorror@reddit
Why do the communities have to be approved?
LegitimateTask0@reddit
It's just a speed bump to prevent spammers from generating communities and loading them with spam links or other trash.
IntotheHorror@reddit
They were approved fast enough so Ill allow it. It does look interesting from what I've seen so far. An app in progress do you know?
LegitimateTask0@reddit
It's in the pipeline but I have no idea what the priority or timing is. Jump on the Discord channel, it has the most realtime info
ThreeReticentFigures@reddit
I joined it as well. I'm really enjoying it so far, and I'm a fan of the smaller feel.

How to Download Your Reddit Data: Reddit is about to shut off public API access, which means it’s about to get harder to use—and harder to get your data out. Here’s how to grab it now.
avinthakur080@reddit
What about SEO for these ? One good thing about reddit is that you can find it on google, or use google search to search its content.
ishzlle@reddit
What's the difference between Mastodon integration on Kbin vs Lemmy? I don't use Mastodon but it would be nice to be able to follow people there too.
Also... what ever happened to Voat? I remember it being hyped as a Reddit alternative a couple of years ago, but I think it ended up overrun by alt-righters?
SpaceNoodled@reddit
Voat was immediately overrun by Nazis, and shut down not long afterwards.
Chick__Mangione@reddit
Which makes the Lemmy devs concerning tbh.
popcar2@reddit (OP)
There's no official way to browse and create Mastodon posts on Lemmy, I think you'd have to find the link and then search for it on Lemmy to be able to follow someone from Mastodon.
Kbin has a dedicated spot for browsing and creating Mastodon posts at https://kbin.social/microblog
redditisnazis@reddit
Lol I got instantly banned from lemmy.ml for saying the admin's picture was of Fidel Castro. That was literally it. I didn't even say anything bad about it!
Daedalus312@reddit
These people are great! They decided to build a new just world on the Internet, equal for everyone and without the influence of bourgeois imperialist governments and corporations.
redditisnazis@reddit
I didn't say anything good or bad about it, I got banned just for saying it was Fidel. Kind of crazy over-zealous moderation tbh considering I am on their side and that's why I signed up there.
not_not_in_the_NSA@reddit
avoid the dev's instances. I'd suggest sh.itjust.works or beehaw
d_Mundi@reddit
Using a community where I have to avoid the dev’s instances is just going to be a hard pass for me, bruv.
sheepyowl@reddit
Both Kbin and the larger sub-Lemmys are experiencing clear issues handling the sudden spike in users. (login/signup servers take long, up\downvoting takes time, posting straight up failed to load etc.)
I believe they will manage to take this kind of load in the future, but right now they are choking.
popcar2@reddit (OP)
https://lemmy.world/ seems to be very stable for me today, try that one.
sheepyowl@reddit
I think I like Kbin better and it's working better since noon, I'll just wait around until they stabilize
LoneStar_2297@reddit
Seems like your site is just another leftist circle jerk.
zedoktar@reddit
Communist views on Lemmy sounds like a positive thing rather than controversial. Unless they are full on tankies, but those idiots aren't actually communists anyways, just Stalin simps who buy into the great lie that the USSR was communist.
firebreathingbunny@reddit
If they identify as a communist, who are you to say that they are not one? That's their personal truth.
bargainkangaroo@reddit
Why should anyone believe a fascist who lies that they are a communist
firebreathingbunny@reddit
If a person doesn't self-identify as a fascist, who are you to appropriate their agency and identify them as one? Doing so goes strictly against progressive ethics.
creativeuniquename69@reddit
wow, it's so exciting to see people like you will be joining the rest of us on these reddit alternatives too! just can't fucking get a break from this shit on the internet
firebreathingbunny@reddit
If the only counterargument you have is Ad Hominem, why do you even bother responding?
creativeuniquename69@reddit
doubling down on being an insufferable loser
firebreathingbunny@reddit
You came back for more suffering, so don't blame me.
bargainkangaroo@reddit
Interesting mental gymnastics to say the least. If you find some honest capabilities in yourself, you could try learning from progressives instead of those strawman stories
firebreathingbunny@reddit
I learned that you have no counterargument to my challenge.
bargainkangaroo@reddit
Who am I and when did I join a formal debate? Wild imagination you got there
firebreathingbunny@reddit
Any claim presuming to have a factual basis is open to challenge. I challenged yours, and you failed to respond in a way that remains consistent with your excuse for an ideology.
Bye, loser.

https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=org.quantumbadger.redreader
Neidron@reddit
Isn't that just a 3rd party reddit app? The pilicy change will kill it too. That's how this whole mess started.
brezhnervous@reddit
No, it was actually mentioned as one which wasn't being affected, maybe because it is open source and makes no money
Also when you install and login, this popup appears
Neidron@reddit
Okay, but either way it's still just a Reddit viewer. This sub is people looking to leave.

Dont_Say_No_to_Panda@reddit
This might seem way off base, but seeing other commenters describe feeling as if they have “relearn how they browse the web” in a post-Reddit world, I have been thinking lately of how I might have to time travel back to 2010 when I mostly used bookmarked sites and RSS readers. Ideally the solution would be the most futureproof (so your whole setup, your list of subs, comment history etc) could be exported to something generic like CSV.
I haven’t used it in years but Feedly used to be great and I have a note to checkout raindrop.io. Does anyone have any other ideas along this vein?
busymom0@reddit
Mine isn't built yet but I am hoping to have an extremely early beta next week. I am the developer of HACK, hacker news app for iOS, android and MacOS, one of the top hacker news apps on the app stores. I have been working on a decentralized link + text sharing site called AvocadoReader for last few weeks. I describe it as a "Decentralized public community of communities for sharing links, text and media."
Here's what I have so far. Got the post submissions and community creations working.
https://imgur.com/a/mim2X9H
I shared some implementation details here if people want to read more:
https://old.reddit.com/r/apolloapp/comments/13x0hzo/been_working_on_this_decentralized_reddit
Mind commenting on my UI?
Dankassweedm8@reddit
Please continue posting about this. Once Apollo goes down I will delete my Reddit account, and this is the most promising alternative I’ve seen.
busymom0@reddit
Thanks! I got editing profile metadata working:
https://i.imgur.com/ZIs0vV6.png
Also, I am changing it to LimeReader DOT COM instead of AvocadoReader as Lime only has 1 syllable as compared to 4 in avocado. So it’s easy to say and shorter.
iconredesign@reddit
And the companion third-party app can be called Juicer lmao. I like the sound of LimeReader, but I think Lime is a lil snappier, at the cost of being impossible to squat on social media and URLs.
Dankassweedm8@reddit
Name change is very good. Thanks!
johndorian55@reddit
Awesome, HACK is the best HN app
bettervanilla@reddit
UI looks neat and fits nicely in the HN/Lobsters/Teddit aesthetic. My only gripe is how long the site name is...
busymom0@reddit
Any other name suggestions?
I also own mars51 DOT com
Is that better?
StickerBrush@reddit
avo DOT reader or anything similar would be simpler.
busymom0@reddit
I am trying to stick to DOT com domains only as based on my experience with non-techy people, they get confused on other domains.
/u/bettervanilla suggested Lime Reader and surprisingly that was available. So I bought LimeReader DOT com
and will use that instead.
VaritasAequitas@reddit
Call it Cado, or Qado. Or Léelo (Spanish for “read it” as in “I read it.”
busymom0@reddit
Problem isn't the name, problem is that most short names and good name domains are already sold.
I was even surprised AvocadoReader DOT com was still available when I bought it.

OverfedRaccoon@reddit
In the past, I've tried Voat, Minds, and Snapzu. The problem wasn't the format in some cases, but the lack of people and interactions.
Tildes looks promising, but the invite-only isn't going to help people actually interested in moving over.
I'm on Lemmy, and now also kbin, and while it's been fun, I'm worried about the barrier to entry for most casual users, communities being spread across instances (with dupes of major ones on each instance, so still not really unified, even though everyone can interact), and people just choosing to not migrate despite all the bullshit, especially since the AMA. There's a lot of potential, but the people need a place to go, not scattered into the aether.
What made Reddit great was the volume of users, which means more potential for people with niche interests.
fudefrak@reddit
Which one will be best for porn?
Nose_Fetish@reddit
Tildes is not text only, they said it themselves. They just recommend posting a discussion with your media, since that’s the whole point.
Flintloq@reddit
I'm unable to confirm my email address or reset my password after registering on Kbin. I'm getting an "invalid CSRF token" error. Anyone else experiencing this / any advice?

Eh, I once created a few subs on the most popular instance of Lemmy, and being the only member of those subs, I made an effort to upload several articles to each every night in order to create a base of content.
Well apparently, new posts automatically show up on the front page, and I got banned for spamming. Wish I could disable showing up on the front. Maybe you can do that now, I don't know, but it left a bad taste in my mouth and I never went back.
d_Mundi@reddit
Sounds broken. Another reason to pass from me. Glad for this thread, but simply haven’t found the alternative to a giant like Reddit (and the same goes for Twitter, sadly, as both of these sites really are going into the gutter).
plays2@reddit
Thanks for this. I’m looking into building an app that lets you browse Reddit along with some of these. Is there an appetite for this? Obviously with Reddit uppping its prices the Reddit feature would have to be a subscription but the rest could come included. If this sounds like something you’d use drop some must-haves in a comment. I’ll remember you 🙂

All I want is to be remembered! Can you work that into the app somehow? :)

CmdJackson@reddit
Honestly, so long as I don’t need to jump through too many hoops or give out too much personal information, I’ll go wherever my communities go. The main thing I’m afraid of is that I won’t know where to go when the move happens. If Reddit doesn’t change course after the blackout, is there anywhere in specific to check to see where people end up going?
Meeterpoint@reddit
I agree. I moved to squabbles.io simply because it's simple and easy. I guess if the community moves there, great, if not then people will also talk about that on squabbles. So just choose an alternative that you like right now and you'll surely somehow find out where the majority is moving to. I wouldn't worry too much about that.
niktemadur@reddit
At first glance, Squabbles.io lacks something Reddit has that I do prefer to have: a downvote button function. Instead it has the Facebook thing of liking posts and comments.
After twelve years, with many highs and lows, I can't believe I'm exploring alternatives to Reddit. But here we all are. This feels like terminal rock bottom and I'm heartbroken. Goddamn it.
With these options, at least we have something to explore now - and quite possibly really like - especially starting on June 12. Something that isn't a repeat of Voat and the specific type of toxic community that overran that site. To be honest, I for one was goad to see them go... only for them to return in 2016 to shittify the place with their parasitic orange idol.
We can know and feel like we aren't just insignificant cannon fodder, that we DO have agency.
Ninja_Hedgehog@reddit
I'm a bit confused about Squabbles. It looks good, but subscribing to communities doesn't seem to do anything? I expected the frontpage to be a stream of posts from communities once I'd subscribed to them (like reddit is), but it doesn't seem to be. How do I see a collation of posts I've subscribed to on Squabbles, then? (And what's the point of subscribing to a community?)
PaDDzR@reddit
Why is lemmy.ml itself bad? How is moderation different on "official" lemmy vs the other links differ? Do mods on the subs have different control?

Vladimir_Chrootin@reddit
I fail to see why this is a problem; you either want to post something on the internet for anybody to see, or you don't.
AimeePlaysMSM@reddit
The exact opposite is being suggested in various "I'm leaving reddit!" threads; with people recommending various tools to edit their message history (which supposedly means the original post/comment is actually gone from reddit's servers as well) before deleting it.
When someone asked whether that doesn't just contribute to the knowledge rot of the internet where googling something ends up in discussions where information has since been removed, a reply comment essentially boiled down to "reddit not making money off of my content trumps that concern so idgaf".
It's interesting seeing these two schools of thought clash when looking for alternatives.
cogthecat@reddit
With you on this being an interesting ideological conflict, though I certainly find myself falling firmly on the data preservationist side. It's really problematic for me both personally (hobbyist often seeking niche information or older content) and professionally (IT technician) for comment chains to go missing or for links to break.
Just a couple of weeks ago I was doing some digital archaeology on my own forum history and found that a huge amount of it is just gone, even through the Wayback Machine. As a result, I genuinely have no idea how to reconnect with the friends I remember but lost or forgot contact info for, and everything we wrote is now permanently lost to the ether. To see redditors deliberately invoke that is... distressing.
I-Am-Uncreative@reddit
Yeah, one the one hand, I'm glad that some of the dumbest things I've ever posted on the Internet are lost to time, but on the other hand... they're gone forever.
WhyIsThisGoing621@reddit
So does Reddit yet everyone is here. What is the difference?
tehyosh@reddit
i assume it's because reddit's been around for over 10 years, initially was niche, then it became entreched and mainstream before their privacy issues became well known
WhodaFRU@reddit
But even when their bad privacy policy was uncovered/scrutinized users like you and me still stayed. And yet wpeoppe are complainkng about fediverse privacy issues? Doesn't seem logical, does it?
Also, the lemmy devs have already responded to that here.
tehyosh@reddit

Anything you post on any social media site is stored forever... I don't get why that's any different with Lemmy? The archive team and pushshift also store all your reddit comments forever.
Vladimir1174@reddit
Every one of these federated sites will store everyone's comments essentially forever on one server or another. Why is everyone targeting lemmy specifically? If you don't want your words being saved forever on somebodies computer the only real solution is to not post on social platforms...
r_-@reddit
Exactly, and not even just the federated ones. AI companies, governments, advertisers, shady big data companies, and on and on - they're all certainly scraping the fediverse along with tildes, pillowfort, lobste.rs, reddit, voat...

esean_keni@reddit
Hey, just wanted to post a reddit alternative that we have built as well. Our app is called Soyke. You can check out our concept and install it from https://spyke.social
We're actually thinking of opening up our API to third party clients in case people are interested in it.
triip256@reddit
Can you not browse the site without an app?
esean_keni@reddit
Not at the moment unfortunately. It's an app only. We plan on working on a webapp as well once time permits.
Aquifel@reddit
Without a web app, you're never going to hit the communities you need to appeal to the wider reddit crowd. Should be easy to market to the younger crowd with just an app, but if that crowd becomes the entirety of the community, it's going to make it highly unappetizing for a wider community to try to develop there.
triip256@reddit
Literally unusable then.

Hasaan5@reddit
Have to say all the fediverse stuff seems doomed to fail to me, we already saw how mastodon failed to supplant twitter, trying it again but redditfied seems like it'll fail too. That a lot of the web3/crypto/techbro types are the ones pushing the fediverse also makes me want to stay clear of it, after all, the guys who ruined reddit, twitter, etc are the exact same techbro web3 pushers, and going from one to another likely wont be the solution to the problem, it'll just delay it at best, waste our time humouring things without a chance of being a serious replacement at worst.
mysterious_whisperer@reddit
I think the reddit model works better for fediverse than the twitter model. Twitter users want as many people as possible to see their tweets. Reddit posts are community-specific. It doesn't matter if people who aren't in your community aren't able to find your post.
Sea-Marketing5034@reddit
I have looked at fediverse alternatives like Lemmy and Mastadon, but there are just large barriers in place that make the switch hard.
Community names are not intuitive and finding specific places is difficult when many have strange labels or are the tenth "this is a general place to chat" with no real difference from the others.
There are also very extremist sub communities. If I am just looking for a casual Reddit alternative, I don't want to have to deal with "oh gosh yet another communist/fascist/extreme ideology community".
And above all, size. This is a problem for all alternatives with no immediate solution - there just is a lack of content and traffic. Many people lurk on Reddit and just want to browse "the front page of the internet". These alternatives really lack the traffic for most important topics or discussions to even appear in main congregated feeds.
GreyFoxSolid@reddit
On kbin and Lemmy there seems to be no way to keep track of what sub...feds? I'm subbed to. I don't like it.
ThinkFree@reddit
Beehaw is down at the moment. Getting hammered hard by the Reddit migration I think.
funk-it-all@reddit
Are there any that respect privacy? The federated ones are horrible for that.
all_natural_d20s@reddit
Raddle specifically doesn't want your info and since they aren't based in the US they won't give up what few things are tracked. See https://raddle.me/wiki/faq
FlexicanAmerican@reddit
You might want to check out tildes.net or cohost.org. I haven't had a chance to really dig into any of them, but they're non-profit, donation-driven, and say they won't sell data/keep minimal data. wt.social might also be in that boat, but again, I haven't had a chance to dig in.
WhodaFRU@reddit
You're on reddit. Stop parroting what you've read.
Here is kbin's privacy policy: https://kbin.social/privacy-policy
And here is what the lemmy devs had to say about the post in reddit about privacy: https://github.com/LemmyNet/lemmy/issues/2977
Stiltzkinn@reddit
Same as Reddit, I know Tildes do take privacy seriously and is not advertising focused, but you need to trust Tildes developer as we trusted Reddit back in the day.
reaper527@reddit
do the people screaming privacy have any legitimate complaints about the solutions being proposed that aren't "OMG, i can't delete things!!!!!"?
FlyingQuokka@reddit
I cannot for the life of me figure out how to create an account on Kbin. Am I stupid?
bettervanilla@reddit
Looks like registration is temporarily disabled in kbin.social to prevent further overloading of the instance. Users have been receiving a lot of 500 and other error codes recently, me included.
My reasoning is that other Polish instances have a registration link in the login page. It's probably best to wait until kbin.social solves its problems.
Maybe you can ask for further details at /r/KbinMigration or in this thread?
sneakpeekbot@reddit
Here's a sneak peek of /r/KbinMigration using the top posts of all time!

I see. I guess the alternatives have some work cut out for them to handle the influx of Redditors, who might later leave.
bettervanilla@reddit
Registration is up now for kbin.social.
bettervanilla@reddit
Maybe. I'm curious as to why no new English language Kbin servers, that are open to registration, have been created specifically to ease the load on kbin.social.
Leondre@reddit
As a purely old reddit user I don't like any of these.
ScaldingLake@reddit
Does anybody have a link to the Warlizard gaming forum?
Bossman1086@reddit
I've been really enjoying Tildes. It reminds me of the Reddit of old from 10+ years ago. Huge focus on real quality discussions and disallows memes, trolling, and low effort crap. Very minimalist UI and a great community. It's invite only right now, but /r/tildes has regular sign up threads to get invites if you're interested. Usually every or every other weekend.
I know there's been a big push to move to Lemmy and the fediverse and while that's cool and I like the idea of a decentralized future, I'm not sure the average person is ready for that yet. The second you have to do more than sign up for an account or install an app, people's eyes glaze over - especially if you start explaining the technology behind it. All people care about is a single site/app/place to go to get all their conversations on a platform that's easy to understand.
RobbStark@reddit
Can someone explain how this Fediverse technology is supposed to simultaneously allow different platforms to communicate and share communities, but also have different moderation approaches?
If there are problematic aspects to one instance of Lemmy, how does using a different site that supposedly has the same content avoid those problems?
not_not_in_the_NSA@reddit
instances can block each other.
If you are on instance A that has rules against Nazis (or some other thing), and instance B has Nazis, instance A can block (unfederate) instance B.
What this means is before blocking, you can see stuff from instance B, on instance A, but afterwards, you cannot.
Jacen47@reddit
there are limits to this where if A blocks B but not C and C has not block B then users of C can share posts from B that then are seen by users of A depending on the instance features of A
JPalmz@reddit
Someone hit me up with a Tildes invite if ya got one.
NeverNotNewbie@reddit
Try sending an email to the address listed at the bottom of the announcement blog. From what I can tell by discussions there, the dev is actively approving invites (though may get behind).
LuciusPotens@reddit
Thanks for putting this together. Two questions for you. First, do any of these have a good app that's easy to use? It could be entirely psychological, but I find browsing on my phone's browser clunky most of the time (opens new tabs, reloads the main page, etc). Second, do any of these have NSFW content. Asking for a friend....
bettervanilla@reddit
Of the alternatives in the OP, Pillowfort is NSFW-friendly. It doesn't look like they have an app.
Lemmy may also have some NSFW-friendly servers. It does have apps, which you can find here: https://join-lemmy.org/apps
Jimmni@reddit
My trust in Tildes is shaken if it's still in alpha after all these years. On another note, thanks for reminding me Tildes exists.
bettervanilla@reddit
This is probably far-fetched, but maybe that's the goal?
phasetwo__@reddit
Thanks for the shout out! (https://sqwok.im). What you describe is one of the challenges I've found with making a site that's based on public chat vs comments. When there are a bunch of people online and you have people to talk to, it can be delightful, but if you show up to a thread and it's empty, you're likely to bounce.
In the past I was doing daily "hangout threads" that acted as the sort of fallback for people to hang in, and we started doing some planned events like a movie night where we set the time in advance and people showed up. Thinking to restart that soon.
Also open to suggestions or ideas in terms of more long-lived posts/chats that make it more usable, or any other feedback on improving the site.
Cheers
Nachohead1996@reddit
Are there (toggle-able) sound notifications upon someone saying something in the chat? I'd honestly be okay with keeping 1-2 chats open in the background and join in when others are there.
That would also allow people to send a quick "anyone live?" message, and otherwise tune out or similarly keep it in the background until further notice.
phasetwo__@reddit
Great question, currently there are no sounds but it's something I've thought about in the past. Unsure how much effort it'd be to implement but I do think we should add it.
Will look into it and get back to you!
KerooSeta@reddit
Thank you for this. I've been using Lemmy for a few days and enjoying it, but it's good to see a break down of some of the alternatives.
TotesMessenger@reddit
I'm a bot, bleep, bloop. Someone has linked to this thread from another place on reddit:
^(If you follow any of the above links, please respect the rules of reddit and don't vote in the other threads.) ^(Info ^/ ^Contact)
Devilz_Avacado@reddit
Definitely checking those out. Beehaw isn't loading though. Is it down?
DandalfTheWhite@reddit
I have an account set up on Beehaw the other day. But I don’t understand how you “federate” with other sites/options/federations/whatever. Like how do you connect one to the other? So I need to make an account on one? And there are some mastodons I’d like to follow but again I don’t even know the terminology and the guides I find are not really for lay people. I don’t even know how to ask this question right probably so I’m sorry about that. Thanks in advance.
awdrifter@reddit
Gab, Communities d00t win.
submissivehealer@reddit
Tildes looks really interesting. I'm bummed to hear that it's invite-only, but I'll definitely keep my eye on it.
FlexicanAmerican@reddit
It's not really invite-only. The blog says to email the dev for an invite.
submissivehealer@reddit
I don't know how I missed that. Thank you :)
vivliz@reddit
I'm going to create an account on every single one of these sites during the blackout. Thank you.
incorrectwombat@reddit
Your kbin account also works for lemmy and vice versa, so that's a bit less to do.
Calipup@reddit
Registered for kbin.social, isn't a great replacement but I'll be interested to see it grow. One issue is that there doesn't seem to the be the same level of account options to intereact with the content. You can't save or hide posts which I feel is pretty necessary with heavy use. I don't want to come back to the gaming section and have to scroll through the first 30 posts to see something new, or have the first 10 posts be half new half old. Or if there's something cool I need to save for later (most recently that was video game guide I'll use a few weeks from now), I can't do that.
cecirdr@reddit
I'm on BeeHaw/Lemmy and just joined Kbin. The Kbin interface is a little nicer. I'll see which instance I prefer and delete the extra account.
I just looked at Tildes. I like the simplicity. Sadly, I'm not invited to play. hahaha!
I expect that I'll be hitting up multiple forums in the next few months as things shake down. Eventually, I'll find my happy place(s) and I doubt I'll miss reddit.
Vladimir1174@reddit
It's a strange time to be looking at other forums again. I do miss the feel of community that existed on hyperfocussed forums in the past so maybe this will end up working out for the better.
IniNew@reddit
kbin looks really nice. Sad that server went down before I could click into any links lol
Hokulewa@reddit
It was just momentary... it's back up now.
IniNew@reddit
It was. Joined and browsing. Thanks!

Here are my picks. I chose only three of the best candidates to make things easier for the reader.
https://www.reddit.com/r/APIcalypse/comments/1429xt2/viable_reddit_replacements/
Chapi_Chan@reddit
Where do I get reasonable/interesting/useful/ valuables/informative contributions within the first three comments for a given post? You know, the kind that gives me hope for humanity and feel surrounded by decently intelligent human beings.
firebreathingbunny@reddit
Hacker News. But it's about programming and startups only.
redsol23@reddit
It seems like kbin doesn't have any comment response alerts nor a history of my own comments. That's disappointing. Unless there's a setting I just haven't found yet.
popcar2@reddit (OP)
It does, but there seems like a bug where it's not on by default. Go to settings on the top right and scroll down to enable notifications. You can see comment history in your profile as well.
haiku23@reddit
Thank you for this post.
triip256@reddit
Are there any that don't require an email address?
Stiltzkinn@reddit
Just for the heads up Stacker News is about Bitcoin and Nostr, nothing about "web3 shenanigans" or altcoins.
habarnam@reddit
I am offended that nobody mentions my own project. :P
Any community that wants to move away from Reddit, I will offer support to create their own brutalinks instance.
Brutalinks is a federated link aggregator similar to (old) reddit and HackerNews. The code is free at https://github.com/mariusor/brutalinks but it's been neglected for a while, and some features might be lacking.
An example instance is at https://brutalinks.tech
