How do you feel about people wearing their work lanyard in public/public transport?

Is it weird/odd? I ask because I wore mine to work this morning and I caught a man on the train looking at me and feeling like he was judging and laughing on the inside. It's an NHS ID badge and I put it round my neck since I lose things easily. Is this not normal? Probably not going to do it anymore since I feel self conscious now😂. But wondering what people think of this.

My work ID does not display any personally details except staff number and photograph. I wear it in public for the sake of simplicity, I won’t forget it and I’m meant to wear it 24/7 on site so I may as well just wear it around. I won’t be allowed into the building without it and the safest place for it is around my neck than a pocket or something because I can keep an eye on it at all times.

It's completely normal to wear it, it's also completely normal for other people to be a little nosy and stare without realising they're doing so. Personally I don't wear mine because if I do people are more likely to stop and ask me for directions and things like that.

The person was probably just trying to read it/make out what it said. I've caught myself wondering what the logo on someone's shirt was, tried to make it out, then realised it was a woman and the logo was where logos are on work shirts. That got me worried for the rest of the day if she saw me and thought I might be a creep.

I hate this. I can remember at least two occasions where I've been "busted" for staring when I was actually just reading the text on a t shirt. It's actually annoying. I feel like if people don't want other people to glance at their chest then they shouldn't wear attention -grabbing clothes with "funny" slogans on them.

It's human psychology. This reminds me of a podcast I was listening to. He was studying psychology at uni and one day the lecturer gave everyone a delusion. The task was to go out and find evidence of that delusion. His was that poeple think your shoes are funny (or something along those lines). He thought it was ridiculous but could have a nice day off at least. He went into a cafe and a group of people were sat at a table suddenly burst out laughing and he swore one of them glanced at his shoe. Throughout the rest of the day he was convinced people were quickly glancing at his shoes and by the end of the day he swore people found his shoes funny.

You'd be surprised. Some companies explicitly ask you not to wear your work lanyard outside the workplace. Two reasons. In some cases, these folks become lucrative targets. In other cases, the lanyard can be swiped, cloned and used to gain unauthorised access to the workplace. Either way, I would never "advertise" where I work. I even ask my spouse to take down the parking permit when not parking in the workplace/home. Don't want them to get the home address/work place with a simple glance.

I worked in two hospitals in the states. Orientation day they made explicitly clear you were not to wear your lanyard offsite or post it anywhere on social media. For the exact reasons you mentioned. Posting your lanyard on socials would get you brought into HR. When I moved here and worked for the NHS, no such thing was mentioned. I found that odd because it is a safety issue.

If I'm in and out of work in the day I leave the lanyard on and pocket the id card. It's a plain lanyard and doesn't have my employer name. It's a key card. Without it I can't get back in.

This feels a bit "overly paranoid redditor". There is no risk to wearing a name tag that contains your place of work. If there really was some elaborate scam you can pull off with just that information then you'd look up the hundreds of companies that list their staff publically online, or the thousands of LinkedIn profiles with far more information. The idea that some dangerous scam artist is going around on public transport trying to read people's off their work lanyard is laughable.

Not entirely true. I work in defence IT and the general rule is if you're off premises then you take it off. Less to do with being scammed and more to do with not blatantly advertise where you work. Mine even has a little dit on the back about it being an official document citing the OSA and should be handed in to a police station if found

It's a small risk, but one that's easily avoided. Like it's not really going out of your way to put your lanyard in your pocket or bag or tuck it into your shirt. Plus like, it's not just scam artists, it's stalkers and weirdos and stuff that can start up conversations with you on public transport that you might be uncomfortable knowing where you live.

As you replied to the person who said about working for a bank: Common risks: -Hounded to sell information to scammers/ criminals. - Followed home and blackmailed to get info as above. - Threatened at knife / gunpoint to give info. - Rare in this country at least, but kidnapped in an attempt to get the bank to pay a ransome. - Kidnapped and forced to steal money / give access to criminals. - Simply stealing the ID card to gain access to secure premises. I'm sure even the simplest of criminals could just wait until they see someone leaving the bank and follow them if this really was a common scheme. You know banks are open to the public right? And they often wear uniforms? Employees aren't exactly anonymous you don't need to wait outside to spot an ID badge. Nobody is pulling off a bank heist as a crime of opportunity because they spotted a lanyard ya loon. I know there is a stereotype about redditors being paranoid shut ins but christ being follow home and stabbed for wearing a work lanyard is spectacular.

So i actually stopped wearing my lanyard on my commute because of exactly this. I was waiting for a bus when a dude caught sight of my id and zeroed in. He came up super close and said "hey name how's it going" and then proceeded with the usual creep agenda of trying to talk when i clearly wasn't interested, asking about boyfriends etc and then tried to follow me onto the bus. Luckily it was free for me and when they charged him he got pissy and didn't stay on. But did yell "I'll see you another time full name!" Do I think he would have gone full stalker? No. But do i think wearing the lanyard caught the eye of a creep and gave him more of a target/ a plausible excuse to engage creep mode? Yeah absolutely and I'd rather try to avoid anything that makes those encounters more likely.

All it takes is a few glances at someone badge to make a half-legible copy that nobody is really going to question and gain access to a work building. "Oh my badge isn't working, can you let me in?" People have done this and got into places they don't belong.

There is a risk, it facilitates social engineering. Hi, its Dr Foobar from oncology, I'm WFH today and my password needs a reset... Social Engineering is a risk even with temporary conference passes. There are also workplaces (like, >!you know!< where anyone who works there needs to keep it secret).

It really isn't. The online info doesn't tell you which train they take, who else they associate with outside work, the car they drive, the gym they go to at lunchtime, the hours they work. It doesn't let you put a name to a face when you overhear a conversation. Social engineering is about putting together puzzle pieces. Don't give anyone a piece if you don't have to.

Maybe you do for people who represent a significant target, but that's not many people. Everywhere I've worked has lists of employees, names, job titles, contact details, even little bios. Unless you're telling these organisations are under constant attack and half my colleagues walking the halls are imposters with malicious intent I'm going to think you are being a bit silly. It doesn't much you think you know, literally hundreds of thousands, if not millions of people, wear ID badges every day and have even more info published online. None of them are waking up to drained bank accounts, arrest warrants in Panama, or keen eyed stalkers standing over them waiting to wear them like a leather jacket. It's demonstrably fine.

I know what social engineering is, and some random redditor repeatedly saying it isn't going to convince me half the UK is at risk because they committed the grave sin of letting a stranger know their name. It is hard to imagine but we are already in a virtual war with cyber threats, some of which are extraordinarily well-resourced. For those, the puzzle piece of ID badge is just one thing they're collecting. Hiding your identity badge isn't just about protecting yourself, the bigger threat is to your employer's IT systems, often accessed by bad actors blagging your colleagues. The more they know about you, the easier it is. FWIW I also thinkit spoils the effect of business attire.

A combination of your behaviour out of work can reflect badly on the company (similar to you're still representing the school while you're in your uniform). And also someone might have an issue with their utility bill, nothing to do with you personally but they see the company and start taking it out on you.

When I was in sixth form we had lanyards and I stopped wearing it in public because I'd get creeps coming up to me and reading my name and using it to try to chat me up. Since then I've never worn one (whether for university or work) outside of those spaces. Just don't like the idea of someone knowing my name and information about me if I don't want them to.

Nothing wrong with what you've done OP. Many people do wear their work related things on their route to work. If you're on public transport, even more so normal. My lanyard stays in my bag till I'm getting it out of the car and going into the office. I only changed habits over doing this after reading some article highlighting dangers of wearing lanyards while driving. I didn't see much risk anyway but sort of took note. Be proud to work for the NHS, whatever your role is. The only joke is being underpaid in the NHS, which many people are. On the flip side of that, they offer one of the best pensions!

Do not wear your work lanyard in public, is the rule anyone who has interacted with the security world in any way has had drilled into them. What if someone on that bus hated your hospital, was mentally unstable and attacked you? What if somebody wanted access to secure areas and hatched a plan to find someone who was lax over their card? There are thousands of reasons why you shouldn't wear it when you aren't there. The more information you give out about yourself and your employer, the more at risk you both are. You should take that seriously, especially for your patients.

I work for a consultancy and was seconded into a client office for a bit - the client insisted we remove the ID lanyards for our safety. It was a project which not everyone was a fan of, so the idea was to prevent anyone getting accosted by people who hated the project.

It's not weird/odd, but there can be some risks. Your basically telling everyone where you work and, depending on where that is, leaving yourself open to approaches from unhappy customers/clients. I work in local government so I keep mine in my pocket while outside. I only work in IT but they wouldn't know or care and would ask me questions or complain about their repairs or their rent arrears if I wore my badge. I'd think an NHS ID might leave you open to similar approaches.

A lot of people don't realize that social engineering is basically a ladder for bad actors to climb. They don't rely on their luck to get an immediate quick win, but every snippet of info is a rung to get further. Theyre probably raiding the paper recycling outside your office, too.

'Work me' - it's a security risk and you should avoid it. It could be used for phishing attacks (they could guess your work email address with firm + name) and using a bit of personal info from seeing you. My own firm has just your photo and name, no firm ID, on the lanyard. 'Out of work me' - it looks lame

I think whether it's a security risk depends on your job. It would take about 5 mins for anyone to find my info - it's actually published on a public facing webpage by the university: job title, email address, work phone number. I suppose if you have an employee ID no. on your card that may be more of an issue in some cases, maybe?

If someone wants to start a fight on the street (which is something that happens unfortunately) they will pick on anything, and if they can see your name that's even more intimidating. They'd also know where you work. It's not safe for you and it's not safe for the business. It's not necessarily about what info you have on LinkedIn. It's how your ID card looks and what lanyard you use. These things can then easily be mocked up. All it then takes is security to let you into the building manually when your pass doesn't work because it looks like there's just a fault on the card. Everyone in there thinks you're a new hire.

Thinking more about it - it's probably more an issue if I obtain the physical card from you, so I can then access the building. If you wanted access to a building, it would be easy to follow someone who was visibly showing their ID then mug them. BUT - If I used personal info I gathered by watching you on the train/tube/bus, I could probably construct a good phishing email by guessing your corporate email address. Get you to click a dodgy link/attachment and I'm into your system.

If you wanted access to a building you'd be best hanging around an entrance dressed in suitable attire claiming your here for X reason I'd argue. Given that I've had to sit through enough reminder sessions I'd buy that getting people to open links is pretty feasible - especially if you aren't used to receiving unsolicited mail. Maybe I'm just thinking too much about my own experience a little too much, where I'm aware that my 'corporate' info is relatively public. That email would get moved immediately to spam for me - too personal, too forward and it wants me to click something.

To get into my office, which isn't THAT secure, you need to get through the main entrance - there is decent security there that won't just let anyone with a clipboard or suit in. If you are meeting someone they call that person to get you. Then, when you go past this, you go in the lifts and need to use your ID to access the floor. This is probably weaker, but we do get trained to challenge people without IDs. That's not even 'strong' security - e.g. a turnstyle that prevents 'door holds'.

When I worked for a NHS trust they advised us to take off Lanyards and to avoid wearing our uniforms/scrubs outside of work even before Covid (2015-18). Not many people followed that rule. At lunchtime you’d find half the clinical staff out grabbing lunch. In 2020 when I went back to clinical medicine, I went out at to grab a meal deal from Tesco (literally around the corner) wearing scrubs. I got accosted by the Covid hoax loonies. Phone in face filming me asking me random questions. Trying to grab my lanyard to film my name. Filming my name tag. Asking if I had given patients Midazolam, or if if I was part of the so called ‘plan’. Learned my lesson. Take off lanyards, don’t wear work uniform outside of work.

Infection control? I eat most of my ‘lunch’ in the corridor walking between jobs with my scrubs on. If I’m doing a long shift I’m sure as hell turning up and leaving in scrubs. Don’t like us walking around in public in scrubs, then make the car park free so we don’t have to go for a 15 minute walk to our car

I agree, but when you have 15 mins to grab lunch you aren’t going to get changed. I don’t know whether it’s truly an issue from infection control perspective though. NHSE guidance says something similar. In generally I wouldn't recommend doing it - keep it in a pocket or bag. From a security point of view - it's a bad idea for various reasons. However given that it's an NHS one then they might have also thought it was meant to be a bit showboaty - "I'm NHS so praise me/let me go first/give me a discount" vibes. Don't wear a lanyard outside of your place of work. There are certain jobs that are seen as undesirable by some members of the public. Civil servants, for example, have been attacked near government buildings because they're identifiable as civil servants because they've forgotten to take their lanyard off. Regardless of whether someone can read your name or not, just the fact that you have it round your neck makes you a target. And it doesn't matter if you're not a civil servant, or another job that makes you a target, you can still be associated as such, especially as there are government buildings everywhere in every city. Put it in your pocket or your bag. It's a tiny mitigation to avoid the worse scenario, even if the risk of it happening is small.

Yes, it is weird. I always wonder why people do that. The other day on the train I sat opposite of a woman with a lanyard. I double look, because her face and the picture were very different. She noticed me, and turned her card inward. But still kept it on! I have a work lanyard but i don't have to wear it but when i have its just this annoying shoe lace thing smashing you in the face and just being there and annoying. So i have always wondered how people wear them even they don't have to (as in not at work)? I work in charity. Some of the charity offices, including local government have signs on the inside before you leave recommending you take your landyard off because staff can get waylaid by people, including I think instance one staff member get attacked. When you’re working with homeless people, vulnerable individuals and substance abusers you have to be super super careful not to give personal info out to ensure you have proper boundaries, and so I would tuck my landyard away before going into the office as clients would visit their and I didn’t want them knowing my personal info.

Never have it visible out of work. I'm often the bearer of bad news and have been targeted by disgruntled clients previously. My ID card also serves as a security fob for accessing numerous buildings, so would be a massive risk if someone swiped it. Has to be visible when inside one of our buildings and I need it to access equipment. I also don't like randoms approaching me because I work for a particular organisation so must know everyone else there or can advise on any random issue..

I work in the NHS, I never have it on outside of work, it lives in a pocket of my bag. I've actually got it clipped on the lanyard back to front so when I have it on at work the only thing passersby can see is the back of the card saying 'if found return to HR....' I've got a very distinctive name and had a spate of patients trying to add me on Facebook a few years ago. It seems to be a common occurrence and I know a fair few colleagues who have had patients try and find them on social media, enough there was a movement to change our staff badges to just have first initial and surname, but nothing came of it.

Where I live we have a bus that goes to town but goes between two hospitals and NHS workers just have to show their ID badge and get to ride the bus for free. I think this depends on your job role, and employer to be honest. I worked in the Police and currently the NHS. I had it instilled in to me as a police officer, that members of the public should not know my job role unless I was on duty (full PPE), so travelling in work clothes was also a no. Now of course working for the NHS the rules are laidback, but I don’t want people know my job role as it’s in cybersecurity so I could be a target. (Disclosing it online under an anonymous account is not as much of a risk). Unfortunately, Lee Rigby was targeted because of the job role he was in, so therefore I would say don’t wear your lanyard in public, because you’re not even safe on your own doorstep these days.

Most security policies tell you to remove them before going out in public. Physical pen testers will sometimes take pictures of ID cards using telephoto lenses, then use that to construct fake access cards. The idea is to prevent this by not displaying them in public areas.

Our members of staff were going to the local supermarket in branded uniform/hi-vis jackets and getting abuse from customers the business had let down. Do what you want. Personally I wouldn't wear one outside of work (and indeed as little inside of work as I can get away with). Feels to me a bit like "flair" from Office Space". I will sometimes try to read other's Lanyards, especially if there's a gaggle of people obviously wearing the same one - just out of curiosity about who has offices nearby.

I don't care and see people do it all the time. I personally don't, largely having got into the habit of being diligent about removing it (or slotting the actual badge inside my shirt between two buttons) while working for an employer that had (legitimate) security concerns and had a policy that it must be removed/hidden off site.

Yes, it’s slightly weird. Why would you let everyone else know what your name is and where you work? I used to wear mine but kept it under the jumper or in the shirt pocket when in public.
