Has anyone tried dirty soda?

If you don’t know what it is soda with cream with syrup.

If you don’t know what it is soda with cream with syrup.
gen_adams@reddit
people always need something new to jump onboard the bandwagon. just the last few fads: matcha tea (2019), bubble tea (2020), coffee with soda (2021) then boba drinks (2022) and so on. apparently this nasty stuff is the latest that will live 1 season and next year we will have new idiocies.
remember when cronuts and similar, actually tasty stuff were " a thing to be hyped "? good ol days... now it's just sugary drinks and stupid stuff
Agitated_mess9@reddit
Those were all around 15 years ago. Pretty popular where I live.
gen_adams@reddit
yeah I'm sure they "started" a long time ago, but they became mainstream around the timestamps that I mentioned. many ppl did many things 20-30 years ago which is all fine, it's the bandwagoning that I hate. 4 years ago my wife got me to try a matcha tea, it was the single worst beverage I had ever had the misfortune to consume - yet many ppl hype these things, even if they hate them deep within, because "it's hip to be square"... 🤦♂️
Libertas_@reddit
Bubble/boba tea has been around long before that in California.
gen_adams@reddit
jesus calm down people, I said it became MAINSTREAM to consume these, I DID NOT SAY THESE STUPID THINGS WERE INVENTED IN 2019. something becoming wildly popular, almost compulsorily popular is defferent to " yeah there were 1-2 places selling these 20 years ago ".
I hope yall get my point, my problem with hyping specific things is that from there EVERYONE has to try it and some ppl (lets not call them influencers) will make their entire persona about it to get clout and traffic through their pages and for their advertisability. this is my problem, not sugar tea for $20 in itself
Nomahs_Bettah@reddit
Maybe in New England it’s different, but matcha and bubble tea have been popular there well before 2019/2020 and remain so.
pirawalla22@reddit
I was definitely drinking bubble tea in New England in 2005
pirawalla22@reddit
I think you need to adjust your dates back at least 15 years, as I was drinking all of those things (and seeing specialty shops pop up on every corner) at least since the mid 2000s
CatOfGrey@reddit
If you lived through the 1970's, you will remember the show Laverne & Shirley, where Laverne loved her "Milk and Pepsi".
As a child, I tried at least every major soda with milk, at least once. It's basically a 'float' with a little less sugar and fat. As a kid, I remember grape and strawberry sodas with milk being the best. That's way too sweet for my tastes today!
RemonterLeTemps@reddit
I did that with ice cream, starting with black cows (root beer & vanilla ice cream), and progressing to white cows (with 7Up), pink cows (strawberry soda), and purple cows (grape soda). I still make one now and then
Agitated_mess9@reddit
Theres a brown cow too. Chocolate ice cream & rootbeer. It’s delicious
sw00pr@reddit
I still drink milk sodas, typically cut them with water these days. Sometimes add nutmeg or whathaveyou. I think of it like a soda-tea.
When done with boiling water it gets real foamy and effervescent.
Folksma@reddit
Yeah lol I don't drink alcohol and when the internet introduced me to that part of Morman culture, I decided to try it
I like the ones with Dr Pepper as the base
Agitated_mess9@reddit
What’s a good recipe for a Dr Pepper dirty soda?
evsummer@reddit
Same, my Mormon friends introduced me to Swig. The Dr Pepper ones are amazing. I should try making them at home since I probably won’t be in Utah again for a while.
sociapathictendences@reddit
Our regional gas station chain has syrups and creamer by the soda fountain so I it’s totally doable.
OhThrowed@reddit
Dr. Pepper with coconut cream and raspberry puree is great.
purpletaco28@reddit
Dr. Pepper with coconut creamer. My roommate and I love it
bombatomba69@reddit
My daughter swears by dirty Dr. Pepper. Personally I don't get it, but whatever
The_Griffin88@reddit
You mean an egg cream?
bloopidupe@reddit
So like a float with melted ice cream?
OhThrowed@reddit
Nah, flavored syrups and the coconut cream, half and half, etc.
bloopidupe@reddit
Interesting.
BankManager69420@reddit
It started as a Mormon thing since we can’t drink coffee or black tea, so soda shops are common in the west so we can get our caffeine intake lol.
bloopidupe@reddit
Why can you have caffeine but not coffee? I thought caffeine was the issue.
BankManager69420@reddit
There’s no actual reasoning I’m aware of, but it’s in our scripture as part of our health code to avoid “hot drinks” which, when it was written, meant coffee and black tea. We also aren’t supposed to drink alcohol or consume tobacco or excessive amounts of meat.
Some Mormons will avoid all caffeine, but it’s not a rule.
bloopidupe@reddit
Not to be that guy... but can you drink ice coffee?
MrMemes9000@reddit
Yeah I enjoy it quite a bit. We got a company from Utah called Swig that recently opened up in my area. They have some good drinks.
jellydonutstealer@reddit
I’ve never even heard of that.
Idealtrajectory@reddit
These guys probably have: https://youtube.com/@sodamilkshow?si=duUsEOUf_ZmPaz64
MyNameIsNot_Molly@reddit
It's a very Utah/Mormon thing. Too much sugar for the rest of us
Mysteryman64@reddit
Saw a Mormon girl for a little while. I thought I had a sweet tooth, but I was fucking amazed at how much sugar Mormons puts away. They may not have been allowed to have caffeine, nicotine, or alcohol, but they made up for it in the quantity of sugar they ate. It was wild.
RaptorRex787@reddit
Btw, mormons can have caffeine-they can't (or advised against it) have hot drinks like coffee and tea (which have caffeine in it which causes the misconception)
Evil_Weevill@reddit
Uh... Are you sure? My brother has a Mormon friend and I very specifically remember that they'd always get orange soda for him because other sodas had caffeine in them. This was just a year or two ago last time I saw him over.
RaptorRex787@reddit
Huh, cause all my friends (who are mormon since utah) and everyone else mormon I know drinks coke and other things with caffeine (like iced coffee)
user_1969@reddit
This is really just dependent on the mormon. Different mormons read the rule differently. Older school mormons avoid all caffeine where nowadays it’s more acceptable to just avoid hot caffeinated drinks.
RemonterLeTemps@reddit
You're right! Though it seems contrary to what those of us of a 'certain age' learned about Mormonism (from the Osmond brothers lol), Mormons are actually allowed to drink cold caffeinated drinks like Coke/iced coffee. They're not allowed to drink hot coffee or tea, tho
whatsthis1901@reddit
Interesting. When I was growing up caffiene was the forbidden fruit with the Mormon crowd.
Mysteryman64@reddit
Same here. A ton of them drank absolute boatloads of hot chocolate instead of having coffee and the like.
whatsthis1901@reddit
Yeah, and I remember that we had to have non-caffeine soda just in case they came over for a visit.
OhThrowed@reddit
So, I'm sure it's not forbidden by the LDS church. I'm not sure it isn't forbidden by his parents.
poohfan@reddit
That's usually the distinction. My best friend wasn't allowed to even have hot chocolate, because her mother always said that all hot drinks were forbidden. We absolutely peer pressured her into drinking some at a Christmas party, and her mom was so mad when she found out. She made her tell the bishop she had broken the Word of Wisdom, but he assured both of them it was ok & not anything to be punished for. Her mom never liked my family, because my mom drank Tab or Diet Coke, so she knew we were are allowed to do whatever we wanted. She kind of got humbled a few years later, when one of her younger daughters ran off with her boyfriend & showed back up with no boyfriend, and a baby.
Q_X_R@reddit
I read into it a while ago for my friend, who has a Mormon friend at their job. Some official of their church came out a while ago and cleared up that it's just no hot drinks.
That said, not every sect or whatever they call the little splinter groups below their main church has agreed, so it varies between groups.
BankManager69420@reddit
We can definitely have caffeine, but there are many families who choose to avoid it.
devilbunny@reddit
When in SLC, I stayed at the Grand America Hotel (which is a very nice, very attractive property, FWIW). When we got to our room, I joked with my wife: how can you tell you're at a Mormon-owned hotel? There's no coffeemaker, and there's no booze in the minibar.
But they had colas (diet and regular) galore.
Not to say that older generations weren't brought up with a blanket prohibition, but at least currently, it's not an issue from the church's POV. Might be for individual families.
theflamingskull@reddit
Orange soda, especially Sunkist, has a crazy amount of caffeine.
Evil_Weevill@reddit
Most of them don't. Sunkist is an exception. I believe it was Orange Crush that they usually got, which is caffeine free.
Rick-burp-Sanchez@reddit
It depends on how hardcore the family is. Exmo here, didn't have caffeine until I was 16.
Arcaeca2@reddit
The prohibition was only ever about "hot drinks" which was interpreted to mean tea and coffee. A lot of people assumed that the real underlying reason for why tea and coffee would be prohibited was the addictive nature of caffeine, and that therefore caffeine should be avoided in all instances. For that reason a lot of people eschewed caffeinated sodas, even though they technically didn't have to. The church put out a statement in 2012 clarifying that caffeine had never been prohibited; still, the avoidance of caffeinated soda persists due to sheer cultural inertia, although it has been slowly waning.
I was raised Mormon and we didn't have caffeinated soda growing up, and I still don't drink caffeine even though I know I can because 1) I just never developed a taste for it (I remember trying Coke for the first time and thinking "this is what everyone is ribbing us for not drinking? Seriously? This just isn't that good") and 2) I see no reason to develop an unnecessary physical dependence. It is a drug, if a mild one.
Nomahs_Bettah@reddit
I think the crux of the issue for a lot of people is that it isn’t an “unnecessary” dependence. A lot of workplaces now require schedules that require you to not get enough sleep (I work in labor law, we’re trying our best to push back against that).
Mysteryman64@reddit
That's a pretty new thing. IIRC, they basically did that to cover for Romney back in 2012.
As an old fart, I remember the days when caffeine was verboten.
OhThrowed@reddit
Goes back farther then that, we've talked about it since at least the 90s. The topic hit the limelight when Larry King interviewed Gordon B. Hinckley. We are still warned not to form a chemical dependency on anything... except what our doctors prescribe.
ballrus_walsack@reddit
Except sugar it sounds like.
Senkyou@reddit
Lmao. I used to be Mormon, but still live in Utah. Pull up a map and search "Swig", "Fizz", or "Sodalicious" and be amazed.
Coffee is bad for your health, but don't worry about getting in the fast track for diabetes.
mostie2016@reddit
It’s also cause the Mormon church bought up a ton of stock in Coca Cola.
cdb03b@reddit
They can have caffeine. They cannot have hot drinks. That is why they can have soda.
Rick-burp-Sanchez@reddit
Le fuck? I'm exmo and lived in Utah for a long time and never heard of this. Mormons love their diet coke. So sinful.
doyouevenoperatebrah@reddit
Yeah I’ve tried it. It’s good, but it’s so much sugar that I didn’t finish it.
scrapcats@reddit
Egg creams are delicious. I’ve never heard the name “dirty soda” before.
bananapanqueques@reddit
I’ve had Your Mom, Extra Dirty
BB-56_Washington@reddit
That sound like an Italian soda with cream to me.
KoldProduct@reddit
I’ve never had an Italian soda without cream
BB-56_Washington@reddit
Me neither, but they always ask if I want cream or not.
bananapanqueques@reddit
They’re different types of cream.
butt_honcho@reddit
A cremosa.
purplehorseneigh@reddit
I feel like literally anyone in the country can just make this at home once they google what it is.
I personally wouldn’t because it sounds like too much sugar (even for me as a sweet tooth!), but like yeah it could very easily be done anywhere by anyone.
I’m confused by the “hot drinks are unhealthy for you and you should not have them” but then thinking THIS is fine, but Utah people you do you I guess
RemonterLeTemps@reddit
Probably in the era when the restrictions against 'hot drinks' were made (1800s), people hadn't thought of drinking iced tea or coffee yet. This allowed a work-around for later generations to get their buzz on, and still remain good Mormons.
CODENAMEDERPY@reddit
Sounds like an Italian soda.
BankManager69420@reddit
For those of you who don’t know what it is it’s soda (coke, Dr Pepper, etc) with torani syrups in it.
Soda shops are common in Utah (and other western states) since Mormons can’t drink coffee or black tea. So it’s essentially our version of a coffee shop so we can get our caffeine intake.
tokuyan_@reddit
It's basically only a Utah/Mormon thing. They couldn't drink alcohol for religious reasons I think and created dirty soda as an alternative.
BankManager69420@reddit
Yep. We can’t have alcohol, coffee, or black tea so it’s essentially our version of a coffee shop.
TrulyKristan@reddit
It’s called an egg cream in NY.
BankManager69420@reddit
It’s a different thing. It came from Utah and it’s essentially soda pop (coke, Dr Pepper, etc) with torani syrups.
A “dirty soda shop” is basically the Mormon version of a coffee shop since we can’t have coffee or black tea.
royalhawk345@reddit
Syrup as in maple syrup?
BankManager69420@reddit
No it’s like Torani syrups. It was invented by Mormons as a way to get our morning caffeine since we can’t drink coffee or black tea.
OhThrowed@reddit
Flavored syrups. Torani is a brand that makes 'em.
BiclopsBobby@reddit
No, it’s more like the type of syrup you could get in your coffee.
eugenesbluegenes@reddit
I use maple syrup for my coffee.
BankManager69420@reddit
Yeah. I’m Mormon and we were the ones who basically invented it as a concept. They’re alright but I’m not personally a huge soda guy.
TerminatorAuschwitz@reddit
Dirty Dr pepper at Sonic is so good. Coconut cream and lime. Delicious.
sw00pr@reddit
Coconut milk is a good idea! How have I not done that yet....
TerminatorAuschwitz@reddit
I've never craved a drink so much haha. I very rarely drink soft drinks but damn that's tasty.
sw00pr@reddit
yes. Easier to just buy preflavored soda and add cream.
DoublePostedBroski@reddit
Um, what in the world is this?
seatownquilt-N-plant@reddit
If I saw this as a child I would try it. But my taste buds have changed and I don't think I could really drink all of that as a beverage now. I can barely finish a bubble tea.
MyFace_UrAss_LetsGo@reddit
I’ve put cream In root beer before. It was kinda like a melted root beer float.
RecommendationAny763@reddit
Yea I made one at home recently. Baja blast soda over ice with some sweet cream coffee creamer (I forget the brand). Was delicious! Tasted like Baja blast milk shake.
tsukiii@reddit
No, and I don’t think I want to try it. I’m more of a diet soda girl.
SunsetBain@reddit
Not quite, but back when I tried (and failed) to lose weight with keto, I would make diet floats by mixing diet soda with heavy cream.
Sipping_tea@reddit
Yes, very popular in Utah. We actually have soda shops everywhere making weird combinations like dirty cokes.
kimness1982@reddit
Sonic offers dirty sodas, but I don’t think it’s very well known. I think they only offer one flavor though - coconut and lime juice.
funky_jim@reddit
I make them all the time and they are fantastic. We generally use Sprite Zero or Fresca for ours. 10/10 highly recommend!
Nuttonbutton@reddit
I can't be the only one here who thought OP meant cough syrup soda 🥲
blueponies1@reddit
I’ve never heard of that but it sounds really gross. To me when I hear dirty soda I think of drinking lean.
Responsible-Fun4303@reddit
No what is it?
pinaple_cheese_girl@reddit
Yes, I tried the dirty Dr Pepper at sonic. First 5 sips it was so good. After that it was way too rich for me to even finish.
ExtinctFauna@reddit
I've put extra vanilla syrup in Coke, in Dr Pepper, and in root beer.
HarveyMushman72@reddit
Tried it for the first time last week. I liked it.
ComfortableFriend879@reddit
My dad lives in Utah so we love to hit up Swig when we are there! There’s one with root beer, cream and toasted marshmallow syrup that is to die for!
CupBeEmpty@reddit
Closest thing my non-Mormon Midwest upbringing had was floats.
s4ltydog@reddit
I had avoided it just because I grew up Mormon and the current Utah culture that the “dirty soda” popularity springs from screams “look at us we are normal, we have mixed drinks too”. That said, I finally tried one at Sonic last weekend, it was definitely a good way to ruin a perfectly good Dr Pepper.
waltzing-echidna@reddit
When I was a kid I used to drink Malta (Cuban malt soda) with condensed milk stirred into it. So yummy! As an adult now, that’s way too sweet for me.
timothythefirst@reddit
Like lean?
I drank it a few times when I was younger but it’s not really that great and it’s extremely expensive.
lovejac93@reddit
Lmao no not like lean
butt_honcho@reddit
Most coffee shops call that a "cremosa." I like raspberry.
IHaveALittleNeck@reddit
Sure, at a Jewish Deli. They were a thing in immigrant communities in NYC at the turn of the 20th century. They’re called egg creams.
JimmyJackJericho@reddit
No, it's just a poor replacement for iced coffee anyways....
JohnMarstonSucks@reddit
We got the Dr Pepper/Coffeemate coconut cream bottles at work, I tried it. They tasted good I guess, but I don't really get the point other than, hey try this it tastes good.
Arcaeca2@reddit
Yes, a couple times. Utah has quite a lot of stores for them. While I don't dislike it I don't think a cup of soda is worth a trip in and of itself nor the prices they charge. Conceptually though it's not really that different from an Italian cream soda and I do like those.
Next_Firefighter7605@reddit
Do you mean an egg cream?
MissSuzysRevenge@reddit
That’s what I thought. It turns out it’s a Mormon thing. Soda, sugary syrup and creamer, something like that. I guess a super sweet Mormon egg cream lol
Next_Firefighter7605@reddit
Creamer? Like coffee creamer?
MissSuzysRevenge@reddit
Yeah, I saw an ad for coffee mate creamer in different flavors. It was advertising “dirty soda”. I had to look it up. I was a little nauseous. I don’t think you can have a drink any sweeter.
Next_Firefighter7605@reddit
That’s nasty.
BiclopsBobby@reddit
I think they’re pretty much the same thing, the only difference being that an egg cream calls for soda water and a “dirty soda”, at least the ones I’ve seen, use something like Diet Coke or Dr Pepper as a base.
tcrhs@reddit
Never hear of it.
Working-Office-7215@reddit
Yes. We are in Missouri but have a Mormon-owned soda shop in town, and I have taken my kids a couple of times. It can be a nice way to celebrate the last day of school, for example, and it is cheaper than Starbucks. I usually just get seltzer but I have tried my kids' concoctions.
OhThrowed@reddit
Hi, yes. My personal favorite is a peaches and cream sprite.
Tsquare43@reddit
An egg cream?
AnalogNightsFM@reddit
That’s just soda in a dirty glass.
To be honest, I hadn’t heard of it until today.
Positive-Avocado-881@reddit
No I have a major sweet tooth and even that sounds like too much for me. I like soda as is
Degleewana007@reddit
lean?
steveofthejungle@reddit
I live in Utah and I’ve still never tried Swig or any of the big dirty soda chains. I’ll stick to beer
youngpathfinder@reddit
It’s mostly just a Utah thing, from my understanding.
BiclopsBobby@reddit
I’m not Mormon enough for that tbh
I take my Diet Sunkist unadulterated, just the way God made it.
ModernMaroon@reddit
It sounds like it would be really good but also send me to the bathroom.
