Do the banks have an 'end game' for branches?

It seems you can't go for more than a few weeks without hearing one of the big banks announcing yet another raft of branch closures. They're obviously going down the salami slicing route, cutting more and more each year. Do you think HSBC, Barclays, etc. have a goal in mind for the final size of their estate? And what do you think that might look like? Just one branch in each major city? Maybe some in larger provincial cities/towns, too?
