ULPT Request: Where can I get fake degrees?
Posted by Sandzisincharge@reddit | UnethicalLifeProTips | View on Reddit | 418 comments
You heard me. I wanna know where I can get convincing but fake degrees. Also how much trouble I can get in if I use these degrees. Obviously I’m not gonna get a medicine degree but I want something that can land me 6 figures without me potentially being caught out for being a fraud. Any tips?
FastEntertainment492@reddit
Hey, did you get anywhere with this?

Any graphic designer can crank out professional looking degrees (minus the raised seal). It’s really simple.
HausWife88@reddit
Raised seals can be made.
bonesbobman@reddit
How
SenorSplashdamage@reddit
The single time I was asked to prove a degree as part of the interview process, they required a request sent to the college and mailed to the employer. There wasn’t an opportunity for the applicant to intercept or submit their own records.
It’s a rare request in general, and someone paranoid enough to ask for proof of degree will probably be operating out of that same paranoia when evaluating the proof and deciding how they evaluate it.
Psychobabble0_0@reddit
I think you're a little biased. It depends heavily on what industry you're in. In the medical field, and the science industry in general, having the right degree (and a real one) is something they have to check
redditisevil-@reddit
It’s not paranoid to ask for proof of degree. Paranoia means you think someone or thing is out to get you
pm_me_ur_demotape@reddit
Gotta get one of those fake transcripts and mail it from campus
OutinDaBarn@reddit
If you provide a copy to an employer the raised seal isn't raised.
Montanabioguy@reddit
An employer isn't looking at the document. They're looking at the transcripts or the background check.
smmstv@reddit
I love how OP doesn't even know this yet thinks he's gonna fake his way into a 6 figure job.
GreggEddwards@reddit
this country was built on bluffs
Objective_Mammoth_40@reddit
This is so accurate it’s scary. We even have a saying for it “fake it til you make it!”
atomsmotionvoid@reddit
I’ve built a 20 year career well over 6 figures by faking it until I made it, or faking it and not making it until a better offer came along - my only degree is from the school of remaining employed
ConsequenceNovel101@reddit
Depends on the country. In the UK I was asked for a diploma. I sent them a link where they can get transcripts from my uni in the US directly and they declined. They wanted a copy of the paper diploma 🤷♀️ Had to ask my mom to dig it up at her house and scan it for me.
CosmosProcessingUnit@reddit
Because they're simply not checking with the university. As I said in other comments - if you pass the technical round then you deserve the job - do everything you can in between to cheat this corrupt system.
hamilton28th@reddit
If you cheat here, you are very much likely to cheat while working your job. And if you make it big - embezzlement is written all over it….. no one starts thinking they will just do this one felony, but if you start small and normalize it without ever having to face consequences then you end up embezzling or cheating yourself out of the future.
I hope you are in a better place mentally and understand that in social environment trust is all we have.
ZeCactus@reddit
"If you cheat to bypass a requirement that is OBVIOUSLY not actually needed (since you passed the test anyway), then you'll DEFINITELY embezzle money from your company"
The logic here is... Interesting.
Aquilax420@reddit
If you "cheat" on your job while still getting the results needed, it just means you're doing the tasks more efficiently. Trying to find shortcuts while still offering the same or even better quality should actually be a positive trait in an employee.
The issue with most companies is that working more efficiently is often only rewarded with more work. So as long as that's the case, I'll just do my work with some cheats so I can do it twice as fast as my boomer colleagues while keeping my mouth shut and relaxing the rest of the time
JustSkillfull@reddit
My Software company did a full background check (through a 3rd party) that included signing a document to say they can contact the university on my behalf as well as requesting my degree certificate. They're US based, but pay well.
I'm assuming most places that pay well will do background checks.
MoanyTonyBalony@reddit
You could change your name to the same as someone with the same DOB and a degree.
At least in the UK, they wouldn't check more than that.
Montanabioguy@reddit
We pay about $700 per background order
Axethedwarf@reddit
Same for me, for another US based company. Third party checked and rung up my university. I think just about any large business is probably going to do the same
DukeOfMiddlesleeve@reddit
That’s stupid
ConsequenceNovel101@reddit
Totally agree.
ClitClipper@reddit
To get an entry-level English teaching job in Japan I had to send my original diploma in the mail to be verified before I could be hired or be issued a work visa.
OutinDaBarn@reddit
That's true if you are young and just getting started. Later in life they don't check too close. The last job I had they just wanted the resume. I have an extensive list of education. I don't think they checked on any of it. YMMY.
Gusdai@reddit
I don't think they ever check themselves. There are companies that do that type of checks for them.
If they check (by checking the university database) and realize your diploma is fake, not only will they obviously rescind the offer, but in some jurisdictions it is a misdemeanor. Google tells me that in South Carolina it's up to $1,000 and a year of jail time.
I don't know if misdemeanors appear on background checks, but if they do then you have another problem on your hands.
the_corners_dilemma@reddit
It just depends. Every job I’ve had has verified my education via background check services.
gogomau@reddit
Yes mine is embossed too with the seal
lysergic_tryptamino@reddit
So my seal will be raised without parents? How can it be?!?
Glasseshalf@reddit
It takes a village
liloldguy@reddit
True. But anyone with a phone and a few minutes to kill can verify whether or not it’s legitimate. Shady stuff scamming their way into a job that others with the proper degree might get looked over.
Mostly5150@reddit
Almost… unethical.

MCCGuy@reddit
Then they can add that in their resume

BaconSoul@reddit
The thing is, nowadays it’s not the diploma you need to fake but all the information in public databases that companies use background check agencies to find.
NullGWard@reddit
I found a website for a place based in South America that will sell fake degrees—but expressly stated that they will not sell medical degrees. It’s refreshing to find a company these days with ethics.
Ikimaska@reddit
could you share the place? really curious!
NullGWard@reddit
It was just a Google search done years ago out of boredom and curiosity. Unfortunately, I did not bookmark it.
Montanabioguy@reddit
Hi, recruiter here.
Don't waste your time. You're better off saying that you graduated from a diploma mill that's now defunct.
HR or recruiting isn't going to want to see a diploma. Doesn't tell me anything.
I'm either just interested in verifying that you went to school so the background check would verify that. Or I want to see your transcripts for some reason and ask you to provide them.
If the background doesn't come back or you don't provide transcripts, then no job for you.
You're better off trying to fake transcripts if anything.
Otherwise_Log7549@reddit
job job job
ImplementComplex8762@reddit
I feel like a diploma mill is worse than having no degree
Montanabioguy@reddit
Probably the same tbh.
It's like, why go at all?
Uniquely_limitless84@reddit
What if I stated a associates degree at at a community college, how would I get a fake one?
Vryk0lakas@reddit
I know it’s way later but question for you. I dropped out right before my senior year to take a decent job and help my family. Would it show up that I dropped out? Or how would it come out?
Montanabioguy@reddit
In that case there is nothing wrong with putting down the college, the degree focus, any projected graduation date.
You don't have to be currently enrolled. At least, not for my review. You may also say something like how many credits you've obtained or how much longer you have left to go on the degree in your resume.
It shows that you have college.
For some jobs, college is absolutely necessary. For others, It's not as much but is a good bullet point.
College shows two things. One, that you know how to buckle down and get work done to meet deadlines.
Two, it shows that you have technical training in a specific area. Such as for accounting, core sciences, classes on areas of the law, engineering training, etc.
Some professional licenses out there require a college degree per state regulations. Such as to become a licensed surveyor in South Carolina, you must have a college degree in an associated field.
What job are you going for and what was your degree focus? How much college do you have? In other words, at what point did you drop out?
Vryk0lakas@reddit
Currently I just have the dates attended and the program. I did electrical engineering but was offered one of those executive training programs that put me all over the place at a company. I’d like to parlay some of the B2B sales experience and the engineering, but engineering sales is hard to break into even with a degree from what I am seeing.
Montanabioguy@reddit
Absolutely.
But right now I will say "Bachelors of Science in Electrical Engineering, South Harmon institute of Technology (in progress)"
Instead of a day, put in progress.
Assuming that you're executive training program only took a year away. More or less doesn't matter. But you can also include that in your education section.
It makes it look like a high quality paid internship and shows working experience connected with your education.
I know more MBAs with engineering degrees then those who stay in engineering. Business education and experience in your field is superb to have.
Vryk0lakas@reddit
The executive training thing was a year long position then I held a position after that as a buyer and now I’ve done some procurement for a startup. I’ve been out of school for 2-3 years now so it’s hard to put in progress..
Montanabioguy@reddit
Exactly. Let them make their own assumption (that you're only a year or so out).
With the direction your career is going, you should really consider taking some online classes like one or two at a time to finish that off. You'll need it eventually.
user2847_@reddit
Out of curiosity, what other things like that come up in background checks? I’ve always thought background checks were essentially just to check your criminal record and things like that which I’ve never had to worry about. But now I’m concerned there’s a lot more on background checks than I thought lol.
Montanabioguy@reddit
A lot of the information is based on what you tell us. Such as where you worked and where you went to school and where you lived.
Can't always look if we don't know where to look.
With that said, it's mainly your criminal checks for state, county, and federal. Education checks show your degree and GPA.
Jobs tend to show what title you held, if you're eligible for rehire at that company and sometimes a termination reason. Depends on what the person at the old job told the investigator.
Don't get distracted by what's legal to ask and what's not. It happens anyway. And, you'll never know. Unless of course you're going into a role that gives you access to that information. Such as HR.
suitablyderanged@reddit
I do background checks for my job, we accept unofficial transcripts. Those are super easy to fake.
DoctorGregoryFart@reddit
So that raises a better question. Where can someone get fake transcripts?
Probally_a_repost@reddit
I typed “how to fake a transcript” into google and it looks like there are a lot of services for that and a diploma.
Jennrrrs@reddit
What exactly do you check? I have one more semester left but I’m job hunting now and have thought about answering yes to having a bachelors degree.
suitablyderanged@reddit
I look for a date of the conferred degree. If we think the unofficial transcript is suspect we can ask for one to be provided directly from the school, but this isn't encouraged.
Jennrrrs@reddit
Thanks for the info!
ShitsFuckedDude@reddit
Random question if you don’t mind, I’ve been wanting to get into being a recruiter and have no degree (my aunt is one and told me college is a scam and I wouldn’t need one) any advice on how to get into it?
MacaroonNo2253@reddit
interesting
I was never asked for diploma's while the work that i do and did were heavily required lol but i did had to do some courses to know how the systems work
I also think here in the Netherlands it's against privacy laws (AVG) to go ask your school if you intended or not, what makes a background check illegal maybe .. so OP move to the Netherlands😂
Bea-Billionaire@reddit
I wonder if that would also work to list a school in the Netherlands... 🤔
Scragglymonk@reddit
Would need to speak Dutch and know the customs there
Whats-Upvote@reddit
Wooden shoes, cheese, liquorice, cheapness, stubbornness, I think I’m good.
Scragglymonk@reddit
more to do with the ethos, clogs are rarely worn, but have a couple of pairs myself, cheese and ham, they love pork and eat loads of it
The_Synthax@reddit
Depends on the visa and where in NL. Good to know Dutch but not everyone does.
bralama@reddit
Not necessarily, there are many English study programmes in the Netherlands. I am currently studying in one (computer science). I’m learning Dutch to adapt here, but I know many people who never bothered to do that.
necovex@reddit
Attend college to take Dutch language courses and other courses to learn Dutch culture and history. End up with a degree. Fall in love with the Netherlands. Eventually earn a PhD. Now you can put down a fake Dutch university and make it convincing that you went there
Mrpoopypantsnumber2@reddit
Nah bro, I can log into an online dutch govenrment website and share my diplomas. They won't ask the school I think, but its not easy to fake one. And I assume there's a way for schools and employers to check if its real.
MacaroonNo2253@reddit
maybe the diplomas have a trace or registration number? So it isn't attached to a name but a number ..
Yh i can download my diplomas on DUO.nl as well but that's not your 'official' diploma, that one is only 1 paper one. The online 'proof'diploma (uittreksel) is even easier to manipulate then the real diploma.. take a look for yourself
But i think if your convincing enough during the interview they may not check the realness .. i think this was the same with me
whateveriguessthisis@reddit
That link you posted doesn't talk about if the employer pulls the degree themselves only in the case of a potential employee downloading it and then sending it to the company which is obviously extremely easy to fake
whateveriguessthisis@reddit
They only ever ask you directly if they need the transcript (to check what courses you took and what grades you got) otherwise they can go through an information broker or the school itself as on most of the world where you went school and what degree you received isn't privileged information.
Augustaplus@reddit
Publishers clearing house has a database of everyone’s transcripts and degrees earned, and it’s routinely checked during background checks
bigE819@reddit
It’s attended not intended btw
Noticed you’re Dutch.
MacaroonNo2253@reddit
thankyou friend, i didn't realize
Sandzisincharge@reddit (OP)
I’m from South Africa lol so corruption is already rampant here. Might be easier to just stay
Shifu_1@reddit
In Belgium working for the dep of education they def needed it. They even withheld my extra pay for an additional degree till I could give them a paper copy. Event tho I already finished the courses.
Hitdomeloads@reddit
You can recruit deez nuts
PlywoodSpider@reddit
Hi recruiter! Question for you, and this may be at least a BIT rhetorical, but how often is a lack of degree scrutinized? I'm finding more and more that jobs are saying required (or with LinkedIn's "Easy Apply" there's often a question of "do you have a degree"), which is very frustrating to a management level person in IT, who has a successful 20+ career behind them but no degree.
It's very dissuading to be presented point-blank with a "Do you have a degree?" question. Is this question simply a screen and if I say "No" my application won't even go in front of a real person? Should I just say "Yes" in that case?
Montanabioguy@reddit
So first thing is first. Don't use easy apply. Here's why. Every company uses some sort of HRIS or ATS. Meaning an HR information system or an applicant tracking system.
When we post a job, on our own company portal/website we ask a bunch of questions that the candidate answers to make our screening easier.
Easy apply leaves a lot of information out and what info remains doesnt port over to our ATS from LinkedIn very well. So we often look at easy apply applications last, if at all.
While most positions say they want a degree, experience usually trumps college. College is great. Especially if it's an engineering degree (due to some licensing requirements).
Real work experience and certifications mean more.
My advice is to go directly to the company website and apply the regular way. Upload your resume with the info and let's the chips fall.
I'm happy to review your resume form you to suggest changes. Normally formatting. Did you know that the average time a recruiter spends reviewing a resume is 7 seconds? You wanna be able to get past that quick scan.
You can say "yes" to college and just say later that you only attended classes but you have the experience. Or you can say no and submit anyway. Again, most places don't care. Especially in IT. Having certs and exp is the way.
PlywoodSpider@reddit
Well, fuck
midnight_rebirth@reddit
Same. I've been using easy apply.for 2 years.
TimeWaterer@reddit
Same. Three years, no bites except some random recruiters who just find my application in a search and ask me to apply to a job for which I'm completely unqualified.
HotIllustrator2957@reddit
12 years... lol.
the_corners_dilemma@reddit
It just depends on the field. In my very competitive career field, if you don’t have a degree, your resume is never gonna make it through to be seen by anyone.
Mr3k@reddit
Let's get straight to the point of this sub. I don't have a job and I'm a really good bullshitter. I'll offer you a lot of money to get me a job that pays well.
CptMuffinator@reddit
FeetFinder has a niche for everyone!
atemus10@reddit
Why not just go into sales? A really good bullshitter could easily sell whatever they have.
kenda1l@reddit
My brother barely finished high school (mostly due to ADHD and dyslexia before schools cared about those things.) He has charisma and is one hell of a bullshitter, though so he's always been an amazing salesman. Now he owns his own business, hired people to do all the stuff he doesn't want to/isn't good at, and pretty much spends all his time doing the sales part. It's worked out great for him.
iRebelD@reddit
What industry?
weirdeyedkid@reddit
Sounds more like he's looking to hire a good bullshiter.
midnight_rebirth@reddit
Sell me this pen.
Yardbirdburb@reddit
60% your check I can get you low show job. Not no show bc sometimes you’d have to be seen. Once every few days
riftwave77@reddit
Best bet is to find someone with your same name that has a degree, find out where they went to school, when they graduated and then claim that you have that degree. This way you'd survive a surface check and only be on the hook if they dig in for details (birthday, SS#, etc).
r/Montanabioguy is right in that running the background search into a dead end (a diploma mill that no longer exists, or a foreign school that they might not bother contacting) will buy you the benefit of the doubt.
however, truth be told... if you were really good at bullshitting then the degree requirement wouldn't be a difficult obstacle.
Tallproley@reddit
1) your not that hood a bullshitter if you haven't bullshit your beat into a job.
2) You just said you're a bullshitter, why would I believe you could pay me a lot of money even if I did help you. On account of you establishing you are in fact, a frequent speweer of lies. Are you lying now, do you have a job already, do you not need money, what do we believe?
satirical_lover@reddit
Well could have to RE sales. No degree required only pure bullshit.
Flaky-Wallaby5382@reddit
Yes i did for a pmp. Got the interview told them a pmp is a pigeon hole
MysteryRadish@reddit
pmpin' ain't easy
Flaky-Wallaby5382@reddit
Depends on your hoes
kenda1l@reddit
I don't know what a pmp is but I read it as pimp and was sitting here wondering what kind of pimp does interviews.
Flaky-Wallaby5382@reddit
Its a group of people who “certify” you with a test. Its good their PMi frameworks for projects are great but the pmp certification is about making money
PlywoodSpider@reddit
Niceee
Applejaxc@reddit
One click apply positions exist because there's enough people in the labor market that they can put whatever bullshit they want. If you want to sell yourself without a degree, online applications probably aren't the way to go
kodemastor@reddit
Hi, also a recruiter here. Depends on the company. I work for a government contracted med device company, so our roles have minimum requirements that we NEED to abide by. This isn't the government telling us what to require, but it is the government saying that if we say we need a B.S. we NEED to hire someone who fits those min. qualifications. Doesn't matter if you have 40 yrs exp. If minimum qualifications say bachelor's, you need a bachelor's.
Qorsair@reddit
You're going to be better served by networking in-person. Maybe your industry is different, but it finance my experience has truly been it's who you know that matters. There are a lot of really smart people I've worked with who don't have degrees, and a lot of really dumb people who have PhDs. Most firms allow them to manually flag applications for review so it doesn't get blocked automatically. Once they know you in person, you have a much higher chance of making it through the process.
PlywoodSpider@reddit
Yeah, I'm leaning on referrals whenever I can.
JazzFan1998@reddit
Side question: Can a recruiter detect if someone says they're working for a (friend's) company, but just wants to hide a gap in resume? TIA.
Turtleintexas@reddit
The gap appears in The Work Number history, because that tracks you by your social security number. The only way around that is to say you were working for cash and not filing taxes.
JazzFan1998@reddit
Thanks, do recruiters automatically think we're lying when we say the sick family member thing?
Turtleintexas@reddit
In my case it was true, and then my dad died, so yeah.
jesus_bacon1811@reddit
I've asked previous hiring managers this question, they know ~probably BS. The good news is that they don't particularly care unless you've been unemployed for multiple years.
They are more concerned if you've been fired before.
CptMuffinator@reddit
Good on you for making sure people are qualified! I wish all HR/recruiters were like this.
I had to explain to a software engineer with a masters in computer science that their program to send an e-mail wasn't working because they didn't specify a recipient. Even worse was the error they sent us to notify they needed help included that a recipient was missing...
rescue2113@reddit
Out of curiosity, Does the background check show that the person graduated from that school or just attended the school? Because that could be the true ULPT if it only shows that you were enrolled lol
LosWitchos@reddit
What are transcripts? British here and we don't use that word in recruiting. Probably just another name for something we do. But it would be nice to know!
jesus_bacon1811@reddit
It's essentially an academic record of your time in university. Companies or more commonly graduate schools may ask for a copy of your 'Official transcript'.
LosWitchos@reddit
Thanks for clearing that up. Yeah we have similar things too, of course.
kenda1l@reddit
Yeah, I can't remember a single time I was asked for my actual diploma and honestly only once was I asked for my transcripts. TBF none of my jobs were ones that absolutely required a degree, it was more just a "hey, you have higher education, cool" advantage. They also weren't exactly 6 figure jobs either. Now I'm in a trade job so even though I put my school on there, the only thing they care about is whether I'm licensed or not.
lucidpopsicle@reddit
I'm a recruiter also and recently found out you can buy a degree with verification for a BCG and they will also sell you transcripts. These schools are not in the US though.

larsonchanraxx@reddit
Yeah the physical diploma isn’t really a requirement for a job. The closest thing to that I’ve ever been asked to supply myself is like a transcript when I applied to a government. Idk how these people think HR offices are demanding physical diplomas for close inspection lol.
GeneralZaroff1@reddit
How easy is it to verify a degree? Can you input someone’s name and get that yourself?
riftwave77@reddit
Extremely simple. Usually less than 10 minutes of work.
haobanga@reddit
Yep!
Startup world is easy to break into with minimal background checks. They just don't have the manpower.
If the company grows, however, especially before going public, a thorough check of all employees will be done. This can result in termination, loss of stocks granted, and potentially a fraud charge.
Might work to make some quick cash and get out, but you would likely be putting in a lot of work and missing out on a huge payout if/when the time comes.
Shazam1269@reddit
Our HR director catches people all the time that claim to have a degree and don't. Not sure if there's a way around HR that actually do background checks.
silentstorm2008@reddit
You call up the bursars office and ask- , or sometimes that have an online portal for that.
fr3shout@reddit
Do you have a list of diploma mills that are now defunct?
WatermelonNurse@reddit
Devry
Empty401K@reddit
Yep, this is the answer. I’ve never been asked to see my diploma. Hell, my diploma is still in the envelope it was delivered to me in, unopened. For all I know they sent me printouts of Hulk Hogan riding a roller coaster.
The few times I have been asked to verify my education, it was with my official transcripts. But those were for government positions, and lying about it would have been illegal and easily caught. I’d suggest avoiding lying about one’s qualifications for any position that requires an SF85, SF86, or applying to any company that would receive bailouts from Congress when they go broke.
jhkoenig@reddit
This. Just don’t
SmurfSmurfton@reddit
you know how to do that friend?
Kewkky@reddit
Photoshop is all you need. Download it as a pdf, change some things around, and done. The problem is when you need an official transcript, since they have sender information on the envelope and are sealed with stamps and such.
CosmosProcessingUnit@reddit
Photoshop is NOT the way. Never done this before myself but used to be a graphic designer. Everything is available by digital copy, and nobody is checking the signing in these documents. If the signing may be an issue then fuck it, find another job, just present something convincing and you'll be fine. As long as you pass the technical stages then you deserve the job regardless of paper...
nevertfgNC@reddit
I am retired now. I was never asked to produce transcripts. Interesting how times have changed. But perhaps my publication record on my cv has something to do with that.
I hope you find work somewhere. Better to be honest up front. Less to remember that way.
Regular_Amount2719@reddit
I didnt get the grade I wanted but I have a job lines up already. can someone make me one to give to my parents to hang??😭
distortion-warrior@reddit
Everyone is getting off topic here, the question was where OP can procure a fake degree. I'd like to know as well for entertainment purposes as maybe I'd like a new piece of wall art.
On the flip side of this, there is no lack of people that will take your online classes for you, do your homework, take your tests, get you through organic chemistry, for a very reasonable fee. Wander over to r slavelabour to find some.
Basic-County6959@reddit
have you found one?
distortion-warrior@reddit
Nope, you got a place in mind?
thpineapples@reddit
Any fee seems reasonable now that I've sat through the entire ochem degree. I have regrets.
distortion-warrior@reddit
Most degrees are rather pointless, just an arbitrary requirement. Just get the stupid paper and move on ASAP.

Attend a school based in Mississippi, honestly put it on your resume as having gone to school in MS. You'll get bumped up for having a Master of Science degree. I had more hits referencing this than I could keep track of - and I don't even have an Associates degree.
jesus_bacon1811@reddit
Just curious how do you list that on your resume?
I can see having the letters MS on your resume tricking those spam recruiters - but you wouldn't be able to convince the company you have a masters would you?
Otherwise_Ebb4811@reddit
Under education section:
school name, city, state
School of Hard Knocks, Biloxi, MS
Since recruiters seem to focus on keywords / phrases and not actually review, it put my resume in the contenders pile. I never followed up so I don't know if it eventually would have been caught but it always made me laugh.
WinSysAdmin1888@reddit
They don't normally contact the university directly. There is a company that maintains a record of accredited degrees that provides this data during basic employee background checks. I don't know of any service that will bypass this.
imrankhan_goingon@reddit
Ive done verifications for companies. I’ve done background checks and transcript/graduation verification as well. There is a central website that we use that will pull up a person’s graduation from a university. If it’s not listed we call the school. A paper saying you graduated won’t help much in this case.
anti-ism-ist@reddit
Interesting, what's your territory? Does the verification work in 3rd world ?
imrankhan_goingon@reddit
I work in the US. We call and email universities overseas all the time. 🤷🏻♀️

InvisibleChorus@reddit
If you don't mind, what shows up in a background check?
punkwalrus@reddit
Depends on what you pay for. Basic checks go from $30-90/per and usually go for all the public records: current and former addresses, arrest records, convictions, tickets, sexual offender databases, or anything you might have gone to court for (like divorce, child custody, etc). Also, if related, professional licenses and certifications. Also college degrees (if you claim it). Some search social media, and some do credit checks although usually one has to pay separate for that. Then there are some that cost quite a bit more that check former employment (via tax records), which might also pull salary, although frankly I have never seen salary pulls actually done. Generally companies scummy enough to pull that don't want to pay extra for it.
Really expensive ones will do drug testing, and while 90% are just urine (most common) and maybe blood (rare), the $1000+ do hair follicle and they don't always pull from your head, either. And if you're 100% bald, that's weird and suspicious unless you can prove alopecia or something.
Note: they can do credit reports even if you have frozen your credit with the major companies. IF they claim you have to UNFREEZE your credit for employment verification, that is a major red flag that they are going for identity theft.

Yeah, I never once saw someone's diploma unless they were my doctor's office or a manager pointing to it on the wall in an argument (this really happened, he used it to "win arguments," he was an asshole). For background checks, it's like you described: there's a central database of accredited educational institutes that most investigation companies can contact. It's probably all digital, now.

I used it again and just changed the date when I traveled a few months later.

I took multiple HR classes in undergrad and grad school and briefly worked in HR, so I would know what to say to get you hired for a job. If you want to shoot US$100 dollars my way, I could be a positive and convincing phone reference for you. I could even coach you on your interview.
asclw7643@reddit
I can't think of anywhere that would hire someone for six figures and won't investigate their credentials. They might skip over your schooling, if your work history is enough to convince them. But it doesn't sound like you have the work history, if you are focusing on making up the degree rather than past employments.
The only situation in which I could see a fake degree helping is if you have all of the skills that the degree would have provided you with. I've heard of people who had to drop out of college in their senior year due to finances, and later bridging their gap to employment by purchasing a diploma in that field from a degree mill.
If you somehow crack the code on how to get a six-figure job based on a fake degree, please let me know. I won't stop you, if you can do the impossible.

Almost any job making six figures will be with an organization that does a simple background check. That check includes checking graduation date and degree.
Even if they don’t, you just f yourself later down the road. Like when you got hired 20 years ago by a corporation in Hanover, MD, apply for a low-level executive position, get it, they do a press release that includes where you graduated, the university gets alerted by a simple Google News alert of all mentions of the university, they call your HR department and say they never heard of you, and you get fired instead of promoted. We all laughed our asses off because every time that dude moved offices, the FIRST thing he did he hang his diploma in the new office. It was fake all along!!! Bwaa ha ha!!!
danteselv@reddit
I think you're missing the point. Now that he has experience he doesn't need the piece of paper which was useless in the first place.
234anonymous234@reddit
He won’t get a good reference and they could potentially inform the new company of this. Imagine working somewhere for 20 years and not having one single person from the company able to vouch for your work ethic- it’s a red flag.
danteselv@reddit
None of that matters that's why I said he knows how the world actually works. That rhetoric works well when you're talking to a 16 year old
234anonymous234@reddit
I’m not really following. A presenting candidate that worked a decade or more at a job that isn’t able to furnish a single reference from that position will not be a desirable candidate to a prospective employer.
danteselv@reddit
Exceptions are always made for exceptional talent. To put it in simple terms if someone has a weakness they should make adjustments to account for it. Assuming everyone on earth is going to want references is illogical especially if we're talking globally. Many of the large companies or corporations will choose from a diverse pool of candidates regardless of references or degrees. You were right in 1985 maybe.
234anonymous234@reddit
Any employer offering a position requiring a degree with a six figure salary will require references. This shows that you are out of touch with the competitiveness of today’s vocational environment.
danteselv@reddit
Skill issue.
ICanHasBirthday@reddit
You might think that - but when the employer found out he was a lying sack of shit for two decades, they fired his ass instantly. Like we came back from lunch and he was GONE.
danteselv@reddit
So he got 20 years of experience and can easily use that for leverage into a new position? Sounds like the plan was executed flawlessly with 19 years of extra padding for his resume. I'm sure he was gone to a new job that he was already waiting to switch to when the geniuses working in HR finally figured it out.
ICanHasBirthday@reddit
Ah, yeah, it COULD have gone that way, but didn’t.
I just checked in with the former co-worker who is still friends with him on FB and the holy shit - i only knew HALF the story!
First, this guy was a total arrogant a-hole. No matter what you did, he had a story that one-upped you. He took credit for other people’s work and was just an arrogant prick. And he had a porn stache that absolutely gave off Chester the child mo vibes. Total douche canoe.
So they caught him lying and when confronted, he apparently told a BIGGER lie. He told them that because of his service as a Navy SEAL, his actual college transcript is top secret and he’s not allowed to tell anything about it!
So HR calls a guy in the company who was a SEAL and that guy reaches out to Frogman (no clue who that is) who apparently maintains the database of all SEALs. Nope - no guy with his name was ever a SEAL. They ask him his BUDS class number and he gives a number that is bullshit. So they just fired him on the spot and had security escort him.
He then tried to start a consulting company and had advertising saying he was a Navy SEAL. He got exposed for stolen valor again and ended up declaring bankruptcy, lost his house, his custom order car, all of it.
His wife divorced him and he is living with his son now. They have a landscaping company mowing lawns and plowing snow. His son does all the work and he is the “owner” who works in the office doing “sales”.
So yeah, you would think he could have just quietly gotten a new job off the 22 years of experience (just got corrected on how long he was there) but no - assholes are going asshole.
Well, that just made my whole damn day and it’s only 10 am! Thanks for making me reach out and getting to go on this emotional roller coaster! LOL
danteselv@reddit
So he lied about his degree, was able to start a family, bought a house and custom order car. Declared bankruptcy to avoid paying any debt he accumulated and now he owns his own company with his son. Sounds like a guy who understands how the world actually works. Compare that to the average person in the US who can barely afford rent let alone ever purchase a home or start a business. The only thing he did wrong was wasting his time working at a place for 20 years hoping to get a promotion instead of simply leveraging previous experience to gain a promotion at a new company.

deathboyuk@reddit
You don't sound smart enough to even realise this isn't a valid route to a 6 figure salary.
Let's make it super simple: If this was anywhere near easy, why are we not ALL making 6 figures?
You're greedy, but you're also dumb. Have you considered politics? Or religion?
CosmosProcessingUnit@reddit
It's not greed, it's balls. I have worked with many people in tech who are pure idiots, getting as much as the engineers. ESPECIALLY if you're a woman or racially diverse. Just fucking go for it - a few years on a 6 figure salary and all that guilt will melt away...
deathboyuk@reddit
I've worked in tech the last 25 years and that ain't the picture I've seen.
I'm guessing you mean "not white" and are trying to crowbar in a bit of bigotry for some reason. Sounds bitter.
I mean, I ask the same as I asked OP: so all you need to be is a woman or not white and then troll your dumb ass into a tech job to earn 6figs?
You're actually saying that?
Shitload of people would love to hear this amazing bit of news so they can get out of their dogshit jobs, for real. You're gonna clear out the retail market jobs!
CosmosProcessingUnit@reddit
Not bitter - in fact you're somewhat correct. I've seen many people get salaries much higher than my own as a white male engineer. Like literally people with 8-week scrum master certifications vs my 7 YEARS of university getting higher salaries with a much easier job. Vast majority being of ethnically, spiritually and sexually diverse background.
You wanna be a bitch about having some dog shit job then whatever go for it, but it's a you problem and as a queer neurodivergent person myself I just don't wanna have to pick up the pieces for people who are just lazy, uncompromising fucks. I'd love to spend all day doing my passions and selling shit on Etsy, but you need to integrate with wider human society or then JUSTIFIABLY face the consequences; or NOT participating in something bigger than yourself and choosing instead to fixate on Pokémon or car tyres or some other worthless shite...

Friendly_Focus5913@reddit
It depends on the industry. In many industries, the number of professionals are a limited quantity, and they all know and talk to each other. "It's about who you know" is an axiom for a reason. So yeah, if you're going for a unspecialized job, sure. But if you're looking to be a professional (aka making the big bucks) its wiser not to burn your bridges.
FatheroftheAbyss@reddit

keepingitrealgowrong@reddit
what if you can't get a different job in time to pay rent?
CosmosProcessingUnit@reddit
How can't you though? Is it time to move somewhere else? Get a job in a different industry? I just don't see how someone is pinned to flip burgers at McDonalds without having made some seriously bad decisions beforehand. Even if you made those mistakes, well fuck if all you think your capable of (and CHOOSE to pursue) is flipping burgers and cooking fries, then I'm sorry but fuck you for thinking that that was a way to support a life in the ling term.
There are online courses and certifications that are cheap and will get you trade jobs withing a year at under 8 hours per week of study. Again, not always glamorous jobs, but if you're willing to learn something and just fucking do it instead of some underpaid burger flipping or barista shite then you WILL succeed. If you are trying to support a family of 4 on burgerflipper wages then you are an idiot for even having that family in the first place, and it is your responsibility to make it right and not that of the taxpayer...
keepingitrealgowrong@reddit
I basically agree, but you're saying lie to get the job, just hop to a different one if you get found out, as though you won't have to lie again and again when these are verified. If you're job hopping every year or two and not eligible for re-hire on any of them, it really makes finding each successive job more difficult.
CosmosProcessingUnit@reddit
Yeah, just keep lying and keep fucking over the system. If someone tries to verify your references then just give them the number of one if your friends. Fuck them over and keep fucking them.
keepingitrealgowrong@reddit
I just don't think that's going to be effective when the whole point of lying is to "get your foot in the door". Constantly being caught lying isn't going to give you much experience.

In most places, colleges that close are required to transfer their records to another school. So for example, Mount Ida College in Massachusetts closed a few years ago, and UMass Amherst took on their records. So if I was doing a degree verification for someone who claimed to have graduated from Mount Ida, I would be able to contact UMass Amherst to verify.
ClitClipper@reddit
Likewise with past employers if you don't have the experience required.
"Guess I'm just really unlucky"
LJski@reddit
Going to pile on here....current job required me to have the school send them a transcript directly. Maybe, MAYBE you can get away with a fake degree if you are moving internally, but wouldn't count on it. Jobs that require degrees, especially those that have 6 figures, have a few more safeguards than that.
ClitClipper@reddit
For all the places that bother to check, there are ton more that can't be bothered. Or maybe they do as official policy, but HR isn't very diligent.
LJski@reddit
Yeah, but would you want to be looking over your shoulder the whole time?
We had a case where a worker was in the last semester of school, and had an anticipated graduation date of like a month after they would be hired.

Feels like if obtaining a fake degree was what it took to get a 6 figure job then there'd be a significant cottage industry for fake degrees.
But yeah, a degree isn't a piece of paper in a frame. Just put whatever you want on your resume and hope they don't check. You won't get in any "trouble" (this part of the questions makes it sound like you're 15 years old) other than not getting the job...

Okay this maybe a ridic answer but could you just search your name on LinkedIn and if you have a common enough name... probably tons of options with grad dates consistent with your age. Here's another thing you can do. Do a linkedin search for people that work in the registrar for universities or colleges in your area. Send them messages on Linkedin that you're interested in pursuing that career, and are asking for a few minutes of their time so you can learn about their job in more detail. Offer to take them for coffee/lunch for their time.
When you meet them in person, if there is a professional dialogue, you can ask them for "official transcript" paper that the university uses. So, I did this a few years ago. I met a woman who worked for the registrar at a school - she wanted to get into engineering and was picking my brain for how she should pursue a role. I asked her if i could get a sheet of the paper they use for transcripts with the university seal, and she gave it to me. I never used it, but I have the official paper used for transcripts with the school seal, at a pretty highly regarded university in Massachusetts.
234anonymous234@reddit
None of what you wrote makes any sense to me.
Upper-Tomorrow-5963@reddit
It's pretty convoluted and requires a bit of work, so let me break it down:
Find people that work in university registrar offices
Message them on LinkedIn and ask if they're open to sharing their career path with you, because you are interested in that line of work. Offer a lunch or coffee for their time.
Meet them for lunch and coffee.
Develop networking base with them.
Ask them if they can share a copy of the paper used for official transcripts.
Doctor your transcripts from a legitimate university instead of a diploma mill.
234anonymous234@reddit
Why would they randomly provide you with paper used for official transcripts though? I mean, if you ask for it, and they say “why?” what is your justification.
Upper-Tomorrow-5963@reddit
When I interacted with the university employee that was looking into making a change towards being an engineer/get a corporate job, I just said I'm curious what an official transcript looks like.
She gave me a blank official transcript paper with the university seal on it. If I ever wanted to show that I went to that school, I could easily doctor it.
Once you meet someone in that role, if you have a conversation, you just ask them. It'll either be a yes or no, but if you're asked why, just say "I've always wondered what it looks like, because I've always only printed my unofficial college record."
Unless you're dealing with someone who is 100% by the book at their job, odds are they'll hook you up.

It's not illegal to lie on a resume.
Just slap on a school and hope they don't check. Plus the place is probably very lax on rules if you get away with this, so that would be a nice bonus to work where you can get away with stuff.

Even with a degree the 6 figure jobs are not as easy to come by as you might think. Fwiw I've hired and fired a few software engineers and some came from bootcamps, one of our highest ranking engineers worked his way up from tech support. The kind of job you're seeking is available if you're willing to show you deserve it with your skills or experience.
BryanP1968@reddit
Just keep in mind any job you get that way is always in jeopardy. I used to work with a guy who lied on his resume about his education.
When he and his wife were separated and talking divorce, his MIL called our employer and outed him. They checked, he was immediately fired, even though he did decent work.
The he and his wife reconciled. Whoopsie.

Employers do not ask for a diploma. The universities are all set up with systems to verify when you attended and if you received your degree. Good look with that "medicine" degree!
saltywater72@reddit
Most employers don’t verify that you actually have a degree. Just lie and wait until you get a company that doesn’t check. That being said, you can legally lie to companies about your qualifications. Except for govt jobs. You’ll get in trouble lying to get one of those.

dudesky1325@reddit
Just say you went to a prestigious school a lot during the interview. Put a date range for how long you "attended" the school, and make it close to the amount of time to get whatever degree you want. If they ask for your degree, say you didn't finish due to family problems or whatever. If they push, tell them that you never mentioned having the degree in the first place. Why is it your fault that they weren't thorough?
SaltyPopcornKitty@reddit
If you have/or need a bachelors degree in Film, Art, Graphic Design, Fine Art or Interior Decorating, the college I graduated from; Watkins College of Art, Design & Film was bought out by Belmont University. So, anyone checking up on you won’t be able to verify! So if you just need a basic 4 year degree… have at it! Watkins College of Art was located in Nashville, TN and it was a really, really great school.
i-piss-excellence32@reddit
Don’t know if this helps but my cousin who has a bachelors degree got a job where it’s a requirement and they never even asked for him diploma.
My sister they asked to see her diploma but they just looked at it and didn’t scan it or make any copies or anything like that
Master_Zombie_1212@reddit
Another option is to do prior learning assessment and recognition and get credit (based on life experiences) towards a bachelors degree or do course challenges.

NikolitRistissa@reddit
Aren’t degrees verified digitally? I mean there’s a digital record of my bachelors and masters. I’ve never actually provided the actual certificate.
I also don’t see how you wouldn’t get laid off immediately as soon as they notice you’re clearly entirely clueless in the topic.
smmstv@reddit
When you use your degree to get a job, they don't look at the actual diploma. You wouldn't need to fake the piece of paper. You put your degree on your resume and talk about it during the interviews. Then when you get an offer, during the background check they'll make sure you are who you say you are.
If you're lucky, they may ask for unofficial transcripts, which any student can download from the colleges portal at any time. I can't imagine those would be too difficult to fake. However, they will probably ask for official transcripts, which you have to contact the school, and have them send directly to the job without you touching them. The point is that they're supposed to be reliable because the job knows there's no way you even touched them.
They'll probably also call the college to verify dates and degrees. I'm not sure how that process works, but it's probably a pain in the ass being transferred around to multiple different departments until you get the one that can provide that information. Or they might just ask YOU to do it.
So basically, if a job only asks for unofficial transcripts and can't be bothered to call your college, you might be able to do it. But that isn't likely.

A diploma is a nice thing that you can frame and hang on your wall. In the US recruiters or job applications generally don't ask for a copy of your diploma - they ask for your education history and then require transcripts to be sent directly from that institution to the recruiter. They contact the institution to make that happen.

haobanga@reddit
If only that were true!
Many, many countries are hyper competitive and have graduates with Bachelor's degrees doing remedial work.
Korea, Japan, India (to mention a few) come to mind where people with quality engineering degrees are not working because there are not enough jobs, or work in customer service or retail.
Latin America is another example, though the quality of the degrees may not hold up to a US university degree, there are still no jobs for the graduates to fill. If they find a job, the pay is often very low.
Europe is a mixed bag. Portugal, Spain, Italy Netherlands, Greece, Croatia etc have very different results when it comes to employing degree holders.
IMHO America offers the most opportunity to earn, including for those with a degree. There seems to be a growing sentiment online of "I work a minimum wage job full-time and can't afford rent, food, and the lifestyle I want. Shouldn't I be able to on minimum wage?"
The answer to this is No.
America has a strong economy built on valuing a person's ability to contribute to the economy. Greater skills equal greater pay. Greater quantities of work equal greater pay. In the US, your value to society and identity is directly tied to your financial contributions through your work. There are more entry points and opportunities to grow and increase earnings than most other countries.
Whether you are on the left or right, neither side will allow the US economy to fail.
What happens when you are old and no longer contributing to the workforce? You have less value. How is your quality of life while grinding away for years? Not great and it may shorten your lifespan and working years. But there is most certainly greater opportunity in the US, and while there will be some degree holders working a low end job, it is a significantly lower percentage than other countries, if not comparable.
America is a fantastic place to make money. As someone else said "Living the American dream for most is now outside the US." Earn USD, retire elsewhere.
Having a degree does not guarantee employment and success anywhere. It can be a tool when properly implemented to propel one to meet their employment and earning goals.

I went to Georgia Tech where O'Leary coached before this debacle. The Georgia Tech Athletic Association 100% knew that O'Leary had lied about his credentials.... they just didn't care because his job was to win football games and make the alumni happy.
It was only after he quit his job with no notice and tried to get on with Notre Dame that news of his fraud was 'mysteriously' revealed. Not all jobs check references..... jobs with a state institution that are public facing (and broadcast nationally) and have total compensation of 1.1 million dollars per year get checked and rechecked for things that might blow up in people's faces.

I'd suggest having spent some time in a very foreign country obtaining a degree from a rather unremarkable local university. Btw creating wording (studied subject XY on a masters course) can, under certain circumstances, allow the reader to interpret it in a way that suggests you having obtained a degree without being deceitful. Of course this would not be very nice but gives very little room for a company to fire you. Just got to make sure you never state you got a degree.

If you’re going to pretend to have a degree that you don’t actually have, I would recommend picking a granting university the employer cannot contact. This could be one that is now defunct, or it could be one abroad. If the one abroad is sufficiently difficult to verify, they’ll ask you for a transcript, which you can forge. The date you earned the degree needs to be older than the last item on the background check if it’s abroad, because your work history and degree will be so far apart as to be mutually exclusive.
If you know a language that isn’t commonly spoken where you live, this could be easier. In that case, look for universities in a country that speaks that language, and attempt to call the registrar to verify the degree. Speak only the language used where you live when you call, and pick a university where it’s impossible for you to verify.
