49, that is 6 years older than my dad when he died from a heart attack. Still young though, but yeah. People die all the time. People are just built differently. My great grandmother is 94 and have only been sick a few times compared to me, I get sick all the time

Actually, thank you. This gives me some context for things I've seen and wondered about. My Mom is 78, and I have only see her go to the doctor within the last 5 years. Twice was because of a fall, and it wasn't that kind of fall indoors. She was outside so he got lacerations on her hands, wrists, knees and face. Frankly, where I live it's a socialized medical system, and they owe HER money LOL. (jk, of course).

But now hearing your side, I realize that some people are just built differently. Some people I guess, it's their personal health situation and when it's their time, they go.

Adam has been quite clear that their relationship was purely professional and that they were two totally different kinds of people who didn't get along with each other or even like each other from the get go. Adam has been asked numerous times at conventions whether he speaks to Jamie and if he ever thought they would work together again in the foreseeable future and Adam's response was a emphatically "No."

I'm in the process of re-watching mythbusters, and in one of the early episodes Adam actually does refer to jamie as a friend. The reason that people keep getting hung up on this, is because they were working together for 10 years before mythbusters went on air. They did battlebots together a few years before mythbusters (which probably is what prompted interest in putting jamie on a show) As the show went on, their dynamic changed. In the beginning, jamie actually seemed to be enjoying the show, joking around and laughing.....but as time wore on, Adam (or production) kept trying to get jamie and adam to compete (which jamie said many times he didn't like) and everyone else was constantly making fun of him, which jamie also said multiple times, he didn't like.

Jamie has since said that he suspects he has Asperger's, or some other form of Autism....which makes it kind of easy to assume that stuff affected him a lot more than he let on. Your average person will understand that it's all good natured, but for someone who can't process emotional cues well, it can cut deep.

I get that you don't need to be Friends with everyone you work well together with, but after 25 years of being attached at the hip, and 15 years of being business partners with someone it just seems strange that they would so emphatically, and totally cut ties, especially when they continue to live and work within a few miles of each other.

The other thing that sticks out for me, is that Mythbusters was brought to Jamie. It was a vehicle for Jamie, and he brought Adam on because he thought adam had a better personality for being on Camera....but over time it certainly seemed like Adam started view himself as the "star" and as the driving force of the shows success.....oblivious to the fact that he owes every opportunity in his professional career to Jamie. I"ve heard adam talk about his respect for jamie, but i've never heard Adam express a modicum of thanks or gratitude....only mocking, derision and complaints.

I've seen the show growing up and rewatched it multiple times and rewatching it now. I've been thinking sort of this way too. Like you watch the show and really don't think those guys were even Work Friends? Like he definitely did enjoy himself and enjoyed hanging out with Adam during the show. You can tell. He just (suspects he) has autism and that makes him handle his life and show his emotions differently. I wouldn't say he's antisocial, but I am sure he enjoys his alone time with someone who truly Gets Him outside of work, like his wife. If he didn't hangout with him outside of work that doesn't necessarily mean they weren't Work Friends. I totally understand that social friends hold a different category all together but to say they weren't friends at All seems like a big step to me.

Everyone has disagreements from time to time, even best friends! And with Jamie being very methodical and knowing how he likes things done, and Adam being very impulsive, I'm sure it got frustrating for them both. But that doesn't mean they had any ill will towards each other. I think Jamie just gets so overstimulated by the end of the day he wants to be alone in his own space. And Adam is (affectionately) a lot! He is diagnosed with ADHD and you can tell from the moment he steps in front of the camera. Im sure it can be a lot after a while. He probably didn't go to dinner with him because after hours and hours of working at the shop all day with him it felt satisfying enough that they didn't Have to have dinner. Their work friendship/dynamic was potent enough without it.

I also think that after over 10 years of working together, having drama with producers, having the crew cut in half, and just time itself passing by, their relationship might have just slowed down naturally and their paths just deviated. After the show ended, and Adam chose to stay in the limelight because that is a spot he enjoys and does really amazing work in, Jamie might have just respected that that was his path, and he could see that he had an opportunity for his time in the limelight to come to a close. And even though that might be a bummer for us, he might be genuinely happy now doing his own thing, living a slower life teaching and working on his own projects. Adam still wants to give to the community and the children very publicly and very often, which is awesome! But Jamie choosing to step aside doesn't have to mean it's because they weren't friends anymore, it could just mean he genuinely wanted and felt like it was time to retire! And good for him! I'm sure the show made him enough money and reputation to be able to live comfortably and take whatever job or pursue any avenue he wishes.

I think people might just be (understandably) looking for some juicy drama where there might not actually be any. I think when people ask Adam if they were friends, he assumes they mean did they hangout all the time after work, so that's where the no comes from. Probably just not wanting to take up 10 minutes to explain the complex dynamics of their relationship. And also in the 2000s they did not have great autism understanding, let alone when Jamie was a kid. I'm sure not having clear communication and understanding of how to make their relationship truly thrive instead of just work had a huge impact on it.

I think that's a little different because they were friends originally and they still get along really well (cracking jokes, etc). It's just that if they spend all day with each other anyway they have no reason to hang out outside of their magician stuff. You kind of run out of interesting things to talk about after 40 years.

In contrast, Jamie and Adam were pretty much strictly cordial in their relationship from the get go (as far as we know). That's not the same dynamic.

But I don't see any reasons that their interactions should be made public.

The fact that they worked together so well despite their contrasting styles is why I have a huge amount of respect for them. I never thought that they needed to be friends. If anything, it shows the benefit of cooperation over conflict when working with others

Adam spoke at a conference that I attended. I recall him stating that Jamie was a good business partner, but in all the time they worked together they never had a single dinner together. So, I think they worked well together, but it sounded like they didn’t have any relationship outside of work.

I think this is, ideally, most co-worker relationships for most people. Like, if you work with people you are cool with while you're at work, and then you go your separate ways and never interact after you punch out, that's all you can ask for. Most people are not friends with their co-workers outside of work; even spending time together off the clock in some sort of "mandatory fun" company outing/party situation (or in countries where going out drinking with your colleagues is an expected thing) doesn't actually make them you friends.

That's how I've always been. I can count on one hand how many co-workers I've been friends with away from work. I got along and worked well with people. I keep a very small circle anyway. I associate with a lot of people. I'm just very picky of the people I call friends. I have people I will always have immense respect for and always got along splendidly at work, but have no interest in spending my free time with. I would do company dinners for holidays and a few jobs had occasional outings. I'm not anti-social, just very selectively social. I get the same vibe from Jamie. Most of the people I've considered friends have been chance meetings, gatherings(church, car show, footbal game), or introductions. I usually want to leave work behind when I go home.

It seems like young people are more likely to form friendships that extend outside of work. About two years ago we had two classes of new hires coming in around the same time and four of them are quite close. Two even started dating which is nice. The older coworkers mostly don’t hang out outside work. I might if they need help with something, I’d help quite a few of them move since I’ve got a truck or if they went through a personal tragedy I would try to be there for them, but just going out for drinks? Doesn’t really happen.

I feel like people miss that you can be friendly without being friends. Like, it's obvious that they respect each other's abilities, got along well enough to film the show even if their personalities and outlooks clashed occasionally, and that they each brought something to the team that the other couldn't. It's also obvious that they are very different people.

I can totally picture them being friendly at work, working well together and making chitchat over coffee but not being friends. That word, too, can take on more serious meaning for some people as they get older....the category of people who qualify gets narrower.

I think it has to do with dynamic within the show. Usually when you have a group that works well together, they just have a good dynamic in general, and it feels like that’s how it would be away from the show as well. Think the three wisemen on Top Gear. A lot of it I guess is because TV production seems and feels to the consumer, a lot more personal than maybe just an office job. It can be really damn obvious when hosts like each other and do the show for the fun of it, or don’t and just do it for the money. The Mythbusters cast seems to have fallen into the former, though without the post show dynamic that is usual for that type.

When I was in college, I worked at a grocery store. There was this girl that worked there and we're did not like each other. We weren't assholes or anything, we just didn't care for each other. If we were both taking the same bus, we could make chitchat, but I would have rejected any attempt to hang out with her. She felt the same way.

We were always scheduled together, though, because we worked really well together. Our whole section ran a lot more smoothly when we were the two people working. I totally get how you can work really well with someone, then just be like, "Well, that's over and I don't care if I ever see that person again."

I never really got the impression that they got along poorly, they argued in a pretty heated manner from time to time, but on such tight schedules I would think that is quite common between two slightly stubborn people.

I always thought they saw themselves as colleagues and not much more, neither getting along very well, nor very poorly. I also never heard Adam state that there was any bad blood between them. I think everyone knows a kind of person from work they can be around and work well together with but would never consider inviting into their home.

I completely get it- there’s lots of people at my career that I respect the heck out of and I’ve worked really hard with, but I want nothing to do with them outside of work.
