Electricity Providers
Posted by Article241@reddit | plano | View on Reddit | 33 comments
I’m moving to Plano from out of state and looking for recommendations on a reliable electricity provider for a 2 bedroom apartment.
While we typically keep the temperature at 67F year round, the apartment is on the top floor of the building, with all windows facing north.
We expect to consume about 1000 kWh monthly.
Thanks in advance!

They all fucking sick specially POGO ENERGY DON FKING get that one They promise you can have service with only $15 but you call the fucking indians working there ask for $60 They also have a gift card for $20 for activating service but is Bull shit I hate those motherguckers

Good luck keeping a top floor apartment at 67 in TX.

I kept 78 the entire winter... I had no issues raising temp to 80, but it was too warm.
Soonerthannow@reddit
I was referring to AC in the summer, agreed, no issues in the winter.
ChemicalSock3926@reddit
I can keep 68 in the summer with no issues. I keep it at 74, as anything lower is just too cold for me.

1) Pretty much all the licensed & regulated electricity providers are "reliable". They don't actually provide your electricity, that's provided by a large provider (such as Oncor). Most providers listed on powertochoose.org are fine and "reliable".
2) I would go to powertochoose.org, put in your zip code, and choose the cheapest listed "flat rate" plan. You want to make sure to avoid any of the plans that require something like an EV or smart thermostat, or "free nights" or any gimmicks, just the cheapest plan.
For example, in zip code 75075, I would choose the "Think Energy Fixed Rate - TX Think Basic 10" which has an overall rate of 12.9 cents/kWh at 1000 kWh. So if you use 1000 kWh, your electricity bill would be about $129.

What's the problem with the smart thermostat plans? I just signed up for the Think Clean 12 with Smart Thermostat Connected, and I dont really intend to connect my thermostat. The only negative I see is losing out on the $10 credit for having it connected
godVishnu@reddit
Is that how it's supposed to work? I'm considering think evergy but absolutely can't see any reviews
Crypt1cZ3r0@reddit
I guess 🤷♂️. I've gotten a couple of emails encouraging me to sign up my thermostat for the promo 10 dollar credit per month, but otherwise I'm with them now, my account is set up, and I've had no power issues so I guess we're good and it's optional. Still waiting to see that first bill before I fully trust em, but they're ultimately just a billing servicer, so no matter who you go with, you really shouldn't have any problems

I just went down this rabbit hole https://behindmlm.com/mlm-reviews/think-review-michael-fallquists-third-utilities-mlm-opp/ kinda skeptical now, and went pale after I saw "Griddy Pro" connections lol

I agree with others here that Nec coop is great for those who are in their network. They offer referral bonuses all year to help offset high usage when we need it the most during the hottest months. I’ve been with Nec for about 5 months now (active Dec 2024) and satisfied with the price I’m paying.
If you use my referral we both get the same $50 bonus. Nec energy does not provide “$60 referral bonus.”
In the box “referred by a friend” you must enter name of account holder and account number as shown below to get your bonus:

For most of Plano, there's only one "provider" and that is Oncor you don't get to choose. What you do get to choose is who you pay every month. The companies on PowerToChoose are merely billing you NOT providing you with the electricity.
Also, you are not going to consume 1000kWh per month when you have your A/C at 67.
Cloudy_Automation@reddit
The company selected is responsible for buying power for what the customer used, but it's after the fact. Oncor is the local distributor, the poles and wires company. ERCOT is responsible for keeping the overall grid up, telling generators when to dispatch power. The REP (from PowerToChoose) makes contracts with generators based on their best guess of what their customers will need, and if they underestimated, have to buy it on the spot market (after the fact, when they know what was actually used). So, they do have a role in electricity delivery, they just don't fix outages
Even_Curve3898@reddit
I just actually today made the same move...started with pre paid electric...wish me luck..🤣
lordb4@reddit
67F. Your bill will be insane during the summer. Also, don't kill our power grid with your craziness. I live with 78F in summer just fine.
Ravioverlord@reddit
Yeah...no. First off being the top floor, second how Texas is over 80 for a lot of the year, and third how effing expensive electricity is here I don't think you are going to stay in the range you think.
Even with a nest learning thermostat when I lived in a 1 bedroom bottom floor apartment in Richardson around two years ago I was paying a lot more than I ever expected it would be in such a small space. I kept my place at 71-73. You may need to budget and use some sort of website to check how much power you will actually use to get it down that low.
Even just putting mine down to 69 at night would raise my bills by even $100 a month.
flilmawinstone@reddit
There’s a big difference between kWH used and $. That $100 increase is meaningless unless you provide information on what you were paying per kWh.
Ravioverlord@reddit
I don't remember I just know that trying to keep it at 71 was a high kWh and was saying how I imagine they are going to be a lot higher than they think having it way lower than most keep it.
mechasquare@reddit
So power delivery is done by Oncor unless you're living a CoOp like Garland. You can shop for electric providers with sites like powertochoose.org but there's plenty of way to find other TX providers just by googling. TXU was the OG provider prior to deregulation if you're looking for a big player. Do a fix rate and you won't have to worry about big swings in rates at all.
arcanition@reddit
I had no idea Garland had a co-op utility, that's awesome!
jjmoreta@reddit
Yes and no. I used to live in that area (the majority of Garland).
You only have 1 provider to choose from. But they're not the cheapest. If I remember, they weren't the worst though either.
New-Cod-6777@reddit
If you can do paperless and autopay TXU energy saver is like 10 cents. You end up paying a fixed oncor and other fees that take all plans up by about 5 cents. I would get anything that is around the 10-11 range
heinzenfeinzen@reddit
Show me any TXU plan that is 10 cents per kWh. They are typically one of the most expensive billers.
crazy2bob@reddit
Mine is 8.2/kwh for energy charge. With base charge and TDU Delivery charges it’s average 12.8/kWh. And that is locked in until 8/22/26.

I recently switched to NEC Co-op for power (https://neccoopenergy.com/) because it was the cheapest I could find. It’s a month-to-month variable price plan, but I’ve been very happy so far. They list their historical prices here, and there have been no big spikes: https://neccoopenergy.com/residential-service/residential-historic-rates/
What I like most about it is there is NO cancellation fee, which is pretty much unheard of in Texas. Which means if you find a great deal with another company in the future, you can switch with no problem.
If you decide to try NEC yourself, send me a DM and I can refer you and you’ll get a $50 credit on your first bill!
flilmawinstone@reddit
Month to month variable.
lol. Apparently did not live in Texas in Feb 2021
goodfornothin@reddit
NEC members did just fine during the winter 2021 storm: https://www.electric.coop/nueces-ecs-unique-retail-choice-plan-wins-fans-in-volatile-texas-power-market
stationary_events@reddit
I got champion , they’ve been good
flilmawinstone@reddit
All champion provides is a bill every month. They don’t provide you electricity
stationary_events@reddit
? I guess you’re right. Got a bill for $220 don’t know why the increase
Applespeed_75@reddit
We used energyogre to hunt for rates for us and it auto switches us to the best plan. It’s like $10 a month, but has saved us a ton. Currently it has us with BKV energy.

You can try ComparePower to find a provider for you, too. They have info and sections specified for movers in general, as well as people who are new to Texas. Good luck!
