Can we collectively stop with the “you’re too young to know about” jokes?

“You’re too young to know about Pink Floyd.” “Back in the olden days, we had these things called newspapers.” “You wouldn’t know what a rotary phone is.” It’s gross coming from any generation. I think it annoys me so much because I was raised by a narcissistic main-character Boomer who *constantly* reminded me how amazing her generation was and how much we sucked. I never want to be that dismissive to anyone. I was born in ‘71 and I know about the Beatles. Hell, I know about Glen Miller. My teenage kid is into Bowie and Jeff Buckley. Let’s just stop. It’s never funny.

The problem is that “you’re too young to know about” insults are generally pretty stupid. I keep seeing them about things like tv shows, as if there were any difficulty watching tv shows from before one was born. If that were the case Nono of us would have seen Star Trek, the original series, or George Reeves’ Superman, or any number of other series we grew up watching in syndication.

I saw original star trek and old superman after school on one if the 5 TV stations we got. I was born in 70 I wasn't around to see them live either. But kids today sneer and look down their nose at old stuff. The tik toks have given them the attention span of fleas. So yes it is a perfectly valid comment

Yeah but it's new shows. No kid today is going out binge watching the dick van dyke show or a-team etc. When I was in my 20s and late teens as we ran out of new stuff to watch and rent at blockbuster. My friends and I would drift down into more classic movies. Godfathers, inherit the wind, 12 angry men, dog day afternoon etc. Now with all the streaming and web videos kids never go hunting for old gems. So yes they are to young to remember....fill in 5he blank.

Yeah, if nobody points out older stuff that would fit their interests, it won't stand out in the huge sea of content they have available. Yes but you know something? They were fucking right. Even knowing the Beatles or say Elvis doesn't not mean I in anyway know what it was like living through the heyday of those artists. Just l7ke my kids will never understand having to work out a network if lies to cover for us staying out all night sleeping on the pavement at tower records to get concert tickets when Pink Floyd came to town. Or what it was like to have no internet and seeing a star wars movie unspoiled by having any knowledge if it and no community to discuss it afterward.

"Can we collectively stop...." is intact telling us to stop. Now if you titled it "I don't find it funny when...." that is expressing your opinion. The thing is its true. Kids that grew up on the internet have was less tolerance or curiosity about learning or experiencing anything longer then a web video that some jack holed influencer has told them they must check out. Sure some still listened to parents music and such. But yeah there are alot if this they missed and have no care about learning. So until I see a major swing that changes it yes I will make those jokes. I am not saying you have to. But you don't get to tell me not to.

There are a few subjects that make me think "Damn, we *are* as bad as Boomers." I completely forgot about grunge, definitely don't rhapsodize about the Ol' Grungy Days, and wouldn't miss it if I never heard it again. I also wouldn't expect people to stop talking about it because it doesn't suit me to hear about it. As my sainted mother use to say, "Well, it doesn't matter what I think about it." I am not always the audience.
