It works better for western US culture (not sure about SoCal specifically) but the optics could look bad given that Native American cultures aren’t really ingrained in American culture the way Maori culture is in New Zealand, for example. And given our relationship with native Americans in sports especially (I don’t really need to go down the list) it can definitely come across as gimmicky and offensive if not handled right. If the Olympic were held in Nevada, Arizona, Oklahoma, the dakotas or northern Florida I could see it

I always like opening ceremonies that focus on the host nation’s history. Rio had a brief run through of all the types of people that reside in Brazil, Beijing focused on Chinese culture, and Athens basically had a moving museum showcasing moments in Greek history.

Well, considering who performed at the opening ceremony this year, I could see the following artist performing together:

Eminem, Dr. Dre and Ice Cube - While West Coast hip hop emerged from Southern California in the early 1980s, N.W.A's Straight Outta Compton had a huge cultural impact due the album's songs describing life in South Central LA. Considering how Eminem had been influenced by them with Dr. Dre being his mentor, it make sense to have all three of them perform together.

Metallica - The US has the most metal bands than any other country in the world with 17,557 of them from here. Metallica originated from LA and after seeing how good Gojira performed yesterday, I can see them being considered to participate.

Tim McGraw & Faith Hill - I wouldn't be surprised if a country music artist gets chosen to perform in the ceremony. I could see also them try to bring in Shaina Twain, Kenny Chesney, Miranda Lambert, Carrie Underwood, Chris Stapleton or Luke Combs if possible.

Green Day & Joan Jett - LA is one of the top 5 cities in the world for punk rock. Joan Jett is one of the earliest singers in the genre and both she and Green Day are from the Bay Area. It'll be cool to she them perform together on stage.

Foo Fighters - This one maybe less likely but it'll be awesome to see them perform.

Beyonce - Why not? She'll also be considered.

Billie Ellish - I can see her maybe sing Imagine during the end of the opening ceremony. She was hugely influenced by the Beatles after all.

Taylor Swift - There's no doubt that she'll be considered to be the final performer of the show.

I agree with other folks, it should be LA/California specific since there will be another Olympics in the US shortly after. I’m sure there will be a tribute to Hollywood—$10 there’s a Singin’ in the Rain number, and I’ll bet Elton John comes out in the sparkly Dodger uniform again.

Since there’s such a diverse population here, I hope it can highlight all of the different immigrant communities that call this place home. Mexican, Japanese, Korean, Ethiopian, Filipino, Vietnamese, Chinese, El Salvadoran, Iranian, Armenian, all have enclaves in various parts of LA that I’m sure could put on a great show with nods to their roots. I also think Indigenous peoples like the Tongva and Chumash should get a spotlight.

I think it would be nice for them to recognize native Americans, slavery , and the waves of immigration, all of which still define our country today. Something tells me they will likely shy away from slavery though which is unfortunate. I know it’s supposed to showcase the best of our country but if the British colonies never made use of slaves, the U.S. would be so much different today.

There’s definitely a lot of things I could think of here.

Considering the Olympics is being hosted in LA, I would like to see a heavy emphasis on the local culture of the region just like there was during the 1996 Olympics in Atlanta. Specifically California’s early indigenous, Spanish, and Mexican history and culture, along with other things such as agriculture, the Golden Age of Hollywood, urbanization, transportation, and the tech boom.

But one thing I’d also like to see besides that would be the folk cultures and traditions of America’s different regions (the ones that were best preserved before modern-day pop culture).

I'd like to see a tribute to American entrepreneurship/grifting via a parade of unlicensed merchandise sold all across the city. I'd like to see a motorcade of Olympic officials get detoured down to Vernon or Central Ave one night and leave with nothing but their drawers; the Mercedes now up on cinder blocks. I'd like to see those soppy video packages of 'pure, goodly athletes from remote villages in the urals' undone when the mind behind it cannot survive contact with a place meant to serve any vice.
