I kno ima year late but I googled this question late at night and fell down a rabbit hole for the answer & ended up here 🤣🤣 so I found out surnames came out 916 AD and xena was set in 1250 B.C so this is my only conclusion as to why she doesn’t have one also surnames started n Ireland and she’s supposedly from Greece and they were known for not having one til the 11th century last names came w the Middle Ages thts why most or all famous Ancient Greeks have one name Zeus, Aristotle , Plato , Hercules etc etc

Thank you for coming back a year later 😅. I think if I recall (I havent opened the comments on this post in forever) people in this group said they also just sue where theyre from too. So like xena of amphipolis etc etc.
Friendly-Mushroom-38@reddit

Just like my grand-grandma (her name was Anastasia though)

I don't remember anyone having last names, they instead just used where they were from or used a title given to them or created themselves.
Xena of Amphipolis/Xena Warrior Princess Gabrielle the Battling Bard of Potidaea Ares God of War Joxer the Mighty etc.

beholderkin@reddit
Warrior is her middle name.
RulerOfAllWorlds1998@reddit
People back in early days didn’t have more than one name, and usually the second name, surname or whatever refers to a place or an occupation, position of power, etcÂ
Brotein1992@reddit
I guess the series never cared for historical accuracy but I don't believe last names were a thing during the BC era
10Panoptica@reddit
Ancient Greeks sometimes used patronymics, so Xena might have used a second name that meant "daughter of Nelos." People also used regional names if they lived outside their place of origin. Since Xena travelled so much, she likely would have been called Xena the Thracian or Xena of Amphipolis.
Wicked68@reddit
Of Amphipolous 😂
Persistent_Parkie@reddit
Does "of Annphiplous" (sp?) And "the battling bard of potidia" count?
More serious answer- last names are a relatively modern invention and when they were starting to be used they were typically occupation based (like smith, baker, or walker) or they were location based (alot of those are some what obscured through the ages but I specifically remember Tittsworth is one because I was REALLY curious about the origins of that one).
Anyway Xena and Gabrielle are older than last names (probably, they sure seem to show up in lots of different eras of history).
redwarfan@reddit
Please tell us what you learned about Titsworth.
Persistent_Parkie@reddit
It was a habitational name mean it was denoting where some one lived. The "worth" part meant homestead the Titts part is less clear because like so many names based on where someone is from it got mangled over time (There's almost certainly a town near you that gets pronounced incorrectly by non locals, think of that problem over centuries). The orginal place may have been something like Titta or Titter.
I'm really into names and the first time I saw that I was like "what's the family history there? Were they a pimp or something?!"
redwarfan@reddit
Very neat. Thanks for sharing!

That makes sense thanks!

In ancient times, individuals did not have last names as we know them now. Typically, the most common ones were location, father names, or titles.
So within Amphipolis and the surrounding towns, she would have been known as Xena, daughter of Atrius — at least until his death when her mother became the better known one from the inn. Then, Xena, daughter of Cyrene.
Farther away from Amphipolis, she would be Xena of Amphipolis.
At least until she got her moniker, such as Warrior Princess or Destroyer of Nations.
Gabrielle was Gabrielle of Podtadia until she became Gabrielle the Battling Bard.
That’s the historical context, anyway. So no, there is no last name, just as Hercules and Iolus didn’t have any either.
Agent8699@reddit
After they are married, they were both known by the last name Amphipolis-Potideia.
Their children were very disgruntled to be saddled with such a long name.
queeeeeni@reddit
of Amphipolis, your last name was the place you're from.
Overall_Sandwich_671@reddit
Only the Romans seem to have last names during Xena's time, maybe the Chinese as well (House of Lao?)
ProgressBartender@reddit
Last names don’t come about in history until after the black plague. With the drop in population serfs transitioned to being farmers and then moving to other villages meant they needed more naming structures.
XenaaWP@reddit
In ancient times they didn’t have last names. They mostly introduced themselves by their own name followed by their father’s or place of birth name, or a status. So it would be Xena of Amphipolis.

Oh yeah. Thank you!!
