Fruit trees that grow in Plano/north Texas?

We had to cut down a tree on our front lawn, and my husband wants to plant a fruit tree in its place. So, what grows up here? Pears? Apples? Plums? I’m assuming it gets too cold up here for citrus, right?

Peach trees can thrive around here. My neighbor’s have one in their front yard. You might want to make sure your HOA allows those types of trees first though, just in case. You don’t want to go to the expense and trouble only to find out they want it removed.

For the Joys of paying your HOA to babysit the neighborhood. LOL Move to the sticks like Oklahoma

We're growing Asian pears, plums, peaches, persimmons and jujubes. Keep in mind that pears and plums need a 2nd variety for pollination. Peaches are self fertile. These 3 need some spraying for disease and pests. Choose varieties with 700-900 chill hour requirements. Check out Womack's nursery online for varieties that do well here.

what do you use for disease and pest control. I have peach and plum and lose all harvest due to pests.

Plum curculio is rampant in my area. I gave up on all organic approach so now use a mix of Surround (clay), Indar (antifungal), Avaunt (insecticide) and spinosad (organic insecticide). I spray this mix at petal fall, then every 2 weeks or so until the fruit reach thumb size. Then I bag with Clemson bags and leave till harvest. I also use dormant oil and copper in the winter. Learned about this method on growingfruit.org

Thanks, what brands of dormant oil and copper is effective ? This year I lost all peaches to brown rot, did you had this problem and what would help to avoid this next year

Most copper is all the same. Southern Ag has one. Kocide is another good formulation. Use a sticker to keep it on the branches. But copper is only sprayed when tree is dormant. You need a fungicide that is safe for fruit spraying. I use Indar.

Hi! I was wondering where you were able to purchase asian pears, persimmons and jujube trees. Thank you in advance!

I order bare root trees in the fall for mail order but for stock in spring best to look at Doan's nursery in Irving, Phuong's in Garland, or Covington's in Garland. Bob Wells nursery can ship. England's Nursery in KY is great for jujubes and persimmons. Nuttrees.net Email them for stock

My mom threw some peach pits in an empty creek bed by her house out in Wylie. 2 trees grew there and they do fine without a bit of help lol
akamelborne77@reddit
Which part of Wylie?

Sorry to hijack an old topic but I was told by an arborist that apple trees do not grow well in this area and that the acidity of the soil would cause the apples to taste foul and not very good. Is this true does anyone have any experience with this? Is a Factor for me to know if I should get an apple tree in my backyard or not

We had a pomegranate tree that we thought we lost in the freeze. We have some saplings growing around the base now.

Where you able to find pomegranate tree?
AamirTheWizard@reddit
Has it sprung back? The same thing happened to my pomegranate tree this winter.
The_Shaven_Yak@reddit
It’s thriving now. Flowered in May and is more of a bush at the moment.

Oh wow that’s great! Gives me some hope for mine lol
