No. “I’ve got nothing better to do” means you really aren’t excited about it, but might as well. “There’s nothing I’d rather be doing” means (hyperbolically) out of all the possibilities in the world you could be doing, this is at the top of the list.

No, you've completely misunderstood their point. Nobody has corrected them. They've told them info they already knew and then missed the rest of what they were saying. Idiomatically those two sentences mean very different things. However, if you take the literal meaning of the words in both sentences they mean basically the same thing. That is their point.

No they don't at all. They are completely the opposite of each other in meaning to begin with and they remain completely the opposite even if taken literally.The only thing they have in common is the word nothing. You might just as well say that Jack's mother died, and jack's mother didn't die mean the same thing because they both refer to dying, but the literal meaning is different.

Both sentences could be taken literally as "there is not another activity I would prefer to do". Everyone else understands this. The first means there is nothing literally you could do which is better than what you’re doing now but implies that there F all you’re interested in doing as an alternative. The second means what you’re doing now is the best thing to do. First you’re loafing on the sofa watching anything on TV, the second you’re an emergency room doctor.
