It's a Jugo, it's built for economy not speed.

This Yugo variant is from 2001 - 2002. Re-design is the work of France's Heuliez design house, while engines and transmission were supplied by Peugeot/Citroen(it's the same engine as in Peugeot 206 1.1). Newer models were more reliable than the old variant because of electronic injection and modern wiring. Yugo In even met EU car safety regulations back in 2002. However, it remained outdated and production ended in 2008.

I know the designers were constrained by cost and size of the vehicle but you have to think there's a better looking version of this that could be made.

If you hold your finger over the front grille it looks a lot better

No designers were ~~maimed~~ involved in creation of the plastic addons :D

Even though this model didn't make it to production, the updated styling was carried over to the Yugo, and a similiar but less powerful engine was used. The car was then produced till 2008 and the factory got bought by Fiat.

This was a junk car in 1990 and there is no lipstick you can put on this 1970's pig that can make it look not even better, but less worse. Lived in Jugoslavija, saw and drove a bunch of them and the best one, Yugo 65 America with nicer seats and a bit perkier engine was on the path to enjoyable, but far from there. Ergonomics of early 1970's FIAT, build quality of "kakva meni plata, takva tebi vrata" variety.
A big nope on just too many levels.
