Thinking of moving to Milton Keynes

Hi, my husband and I are thinking of moving to Milton Keynes. We are a Muslim family, with young children.
We want to know what areas in Milton Keynes has easy access to Mosques, Halal butchers, Halal takeaways, supermarkets and good schools/nurseries and also want to know if the overall area is good/safe to live in.
Is anyone able to provide a list of areas that have these criterias please? Thanks in advance! :)

We’re also a Muslim family moving to Milton Keynes from Slough in a fortnight. I’d be grateful if someone could provide some insight into Emerson Valley. Are there any areas that might be slightly hostile towards Muslims, particularly those who wear the niqab, as my wife does?

I moved the whole family from Slough to Milton Keynes primarily due to rising rent costs. Our 3-bedroom home in Slough went up to £2,200, while we found a more affordable 4-bedroom place in Milton Keynes for £1,850. Beyond the financial savings, the area is much better suited to our lifestyle. It’s greener, cleaner, and feels much safer, which has been great for everyone, including my elderly parents who love the peaceful environment and the many walking paths.
For the whole family, Milton Keynes has proven to be more convenient in many ways. If you work remotely or drive, the area is fantastic, with multiple retail parks and a huge shopping centre that has everything you need in one place. While Slough had more diverse food options and was closer to London, Milton Keynes more than makes up for it with its space, tranquility, and overall quality of life. Though commuting to London takes longer and costs more from here, the benefits have made the move worth it for all of us.

Milton Keynes is really diverse which is part of what makes it such a good city. I live in Westcroft which is near Emerson Valley and there are people of all faiths here which is great. Your wife shouldn’t have any trouble wearing the niqab, I know several ladies that do and they haven’t had any problems. There are idiots everywhere though unfortunately but I think Milton Keynes is safer than most places due to the diversity.

I think you’d be fine in any of the decent areas but I suppose it depends on what you mean by easy access: walking distance would limit you because MK is a big spread out place. But it’s very diverse here and you wouldn’t struggle to find halal businesses or Muslim communities.
There are plenty of posts on here with people thinking of moving and asking about different areas. So you’ll find lots of info to read through and can always ask if you have more specific questions. Good luck in your search!

As someone who has been in the same situation as yourself, as long as you have transportation available you should have no issues.
There are some facebook groups for sisters who have been through the same circumstances, it helped my wife to really settle.

My first thought was Wolverton. Mainly Victorian terraces, but also new builds and everything in between.
It's a mixed community, but has an established Muslim community. There's a mosque and halal butchers, it's got good connections to other places through its railway station.
I can't advise on schools and nurseries I'm afraid, as I don't have children. Hopefully someone else can advise or you can look online for Ofsted reports.

I was in Wolverton last weekend for my birthday and an old bloke told me to "move cunt" when crossing the road. I didn't hear it, only my gf did so I couldn't say/do anything. The impression I have of Wolverton now is that its pretty much a shithole..

I lived there for around 10yrs and adored it. Maybe your girlfriend was mistaken? Also, is the 'random' Tesco guy the trolley collector? He's very good at his job. He's been doing it for years. All power to Tesco for being an inclusive employer.

I also heard the old guy say something but it wasn't clear so he definitely said it..Both these incidents happened in front of Tescos on the high street. The 'random' guy was shouting something aggressively in his language. Definitely would not recommend Wolverton imo..

Sorry you had a bad experience. As I said, I lived there for 10yrs without any problems at all. I'm concerned about both 'old guy' and the 'in his language' comments. But that's by the by. If he was a bother to people - and aggressive - you probably should have reported him to the neighbourhood police team. It's certainly not indicative of the area. It's like a London suburb, really. Only safer. Maybe try Hounslow for your birthday next year!

Why are you concerned about me calling the old guy "old".Im a minority myself and I don't see me saying "in his language" as a bad thing..Yeah you are right, Wolverton is like a London suburb only a bad one where its seemingly unsafe for people to walk at night without being abused.

Maybe lakes estate, but nothing really. MK is diverse and pretty safe imo. You might get a bigot here and there, but they will likely be stupid teenagers more than anytime else.

Milton keynes isn't that big thanks to the road network. You can get everywhere in 15 mins or so. I would focus on good housing areas, schools etc in your price point. There are mosques in central, wolverine, bletchley and a couple others. Halal butchers in all these areas plus supermarkets like sainsburies and asda having halal sections so I wouldn't think about it too hard , you will.be in reach of all of these no matter where you pick

I’ve always thought compared to many other areas, that Milton Keynes and the surrounding areas are safe. I don’t think you will have any issues with finding things, wherever you choose to move. I wish you the very best with your move.

MK has a lot of mosques so you will not struggle to find them within a 10-15 minute radius by driving. People recommended Wolverton but MK central has it all: main city shopping centre, a thriving food market, established mosque, and schools but living a walking distance comes at a big price.
